I am a writer. I tell people lies for money.
A few readers have asked me how I choose who gets a book/what order the stories go in. The truth is, I give this A LOT of thought and most of it is planned out very far in advance. When I decided to write the Remington series back in 2016 (I KNOW!) I knew a few things:
1. I wanted a lot of books, so I'd have to break things into "sub series" (Station Seventeen, Remington Medical, Intelligence Unit, and Rescue Squad)
2. That I'd have to plan the couples in advance otherwise I wouldn't be able to leave y'all "Easter eggs" -- those fun little hints in each book that allude to future couples.
So I planned every single one of the Remington couples in 2016 when I mapped the series. For those of you with REALLY good eyes, you'll see/remember that waaaaayyyyy back in Deep Check, there's a snippet where Addison goes off to flirt with the hockey players on Finn's team...and Ryan gets grumpy about it 🥰 I knew WAY back then that they'd be a couple.
I do sometimes add characters/couples who weren't in the original "plan". Jo and Sawyer are a perfect example. Neither of them were ever in the series outline, but once I started writing The Grifter and Jo became a bigger character than I thought she might, I realized she could use a good HEA. I'd been asked to participate in a SUPER fun newsletter builder project, which required a new story, so I wrote Sawyer into the epilogue for The Grifter, and that was that! The Renegade was born!
There's a longer story along this line that has to do with Xander, but I'm saving it for another post. Suffice it to say he lived in my head rent-free for a LONG TIME before he got his story, though.
So tell me... which couple is your favorite match? Can you think of any (spoiler-free) "Easter eggs" you've seen that hint at future couples? (PSSST-- there is going to be a BIG Easter egg in the exclusive epilogue to The Rogue. HUGE) And do you have any other questions for our behind-the-scenes posts this month?

Snowbound Spring Break and Other Adventures
It's never a dull moment over here! The teens are on spring break this week, we had a freak snowstorm that derailed our weekend plans, but it was an excellent excuse to stay in and read--or, in my case, write. I'm clacking away on The Rogue, which will hit e-readers on May 10. But in the meantime, I have got a pretty insane amount of fun things to tide you over.
1. I wrote a sexy prequel to The Rogue called Fast Burn. Fast Burn: A Prequel to The Rogue It's a look at the one-night stand that Hale and Dempsey have before their book starts. There's some content here that will NOT be in the book, so...yeah. Grab it and read tonight!
2. I've got a VIP special with an exclusive Intelligence Unit novella (hellllloooo, ex-military hero/older woman-younger-man single mom romance!) There are also thirty (3-0. For real) other free books that go with this one, so make sure to check my website for those goodies (click on The Renegade!)
3. I'll be at Apollycon in July! This is my first signing in two long years, and I am SO ready. If you'll be there, too, let me know in the comments so we can be sure to say hi at the event.
4. Where are my bloggers and Bookstagrammers? I've got a signup sheet going for ARCs of The Rogue, along with release week goodies. Please message me for the signup--I'd love to have you on board!
5. Here are some things I'm loving lately:
Kate Meader's Up in Smoke Y'all KNOW I am a sucker for firefighters, and Roman Rossi and Abby Sullivan do NOT disappoint.
Do I miss my lost hour from Daylight Saving Time? Those of you who had to set your clocks forward last weekend know that I am. But our snow is a distant memory now, and I sure am loving my extra daylight. Speaking of which...
I'm turning 50 in a few weeks, and Mr. K and the teens are helping me make my long-time dream of having a big garden in our yard a reality! I've been reading tons of articles and books on planting all sorts of veggies, fruit trees, and herbs. If you have any pointers, please leave them in the comments!
Along those lines, if you've not read The Garden of Happy Endings, it's a really wonderful story--you'll finish with a warm heart.
That's all for now--but stay tuned for more Intelligence Unit hotness very soon! I'll be posting teasers of The Rogue. Firefighter Ryan Dempsey = oh my, yes!

What NOT to do the week between Christmas and New Year's...
The week between Christmas and New Year's is a hazy, often lazy, place. I'm fortunate enough to be off from my day job this week, so I've got this huge stack of books (some of that is metaphorical, as a few are e-books!) that I have vowed to cuddle up with.
If you're like me, and you want to knock a few more books off your Goodreads challenge before the clock strikes twelve in a few nights, or if you're in the mood for a good, old-fashioned binge read, I'm here to help. The first book in my Cross Creek series (think small town, sexy standalone romances centered around a family saga that will give you every last one of the feels) is free right now on all retailers!

A teeny bit more about Crossing Hearts:
⭐ Small town, second-chance lovers
⭐ Calm, cool hero who is rattled by only one thing (the one who got away!)
⭐ Heroine with wounds and secrets and a weak spot for only one man (the one she left!)
⭐ Book one of a complete (read: bingeable!) series--all books are standalones with a shared world and characters who cameo throughout
⭐ Country boys, small-town charm, and a whole lot of sizzle
It's free internationally, too--go forth and binge, my friends! And Happy New Year (if you can remember what day it is, in this hazy, lazy week, hehe!)

"You're a Really Nice Guy, You Know That?"

Because what this Tuesday needs is a pick-me-up, I present to you Exhibit A: a spoiler-free sneak peek at ADA Tara Kingston and rookie cop Xander Matthews, from The Rookie (older woman/younger man opposites attract romantic suspense. Why yes, she tried to prosecute him once upon a time, and yes. He's a bad-boy hero with a dark past he wants to leave behind...)
Tara took a step toward him, her arms softening at her sides. “You’re a really nice guy, you know that?”
The urge to correct her was strong, but Xander bit it in half and said, “Just doing my job.”
“The standard answer when someone says ‘you’re a nice guy’ is usually ‘thank you’.”
The words carried none of her usual heat, filled instead with curiosity, and hell, Xander would take her ire a million times over the beautiful, wide-open look on her face right now. “Thank you.”
Another step, and now Tara was right in front of him, close enough to touch. “How come you don’t like being called a nice guy?”
His pulse flared, but that shit about old habits was real.
This time, he stepped toward her, cutting the distance between them to inches. “The standard answer when someone says ‘thank you’ is usually ‘you’re welcome’.”
“Oh,” Tara breathed. Her lips parted to release the sound as a sigh, and suddenly, there was nothing in the universe other than him, her, and the red-hot urge to claim her mouth.
“You’re welcome, Xander.”
Add the book to your TBR or grab it here. The Rookie

So, this is happening...
Y'all, we are only two TINY little weeks away from The Grifter hitting e-readers!

Here's everything you need to be ready for this single dad, second chance romantic suspense:
1. Add it to your Goodreads TBR so other readers can see it and check it out, too! You can do that right here: The Grifter
2. Vote for The Grifter for October's Most Anticipated Romance! It's on the book page.

3. Sign up for the EXCLUSIVE preorder extended epilogue. For those of you who have read my Remington Medical and Intelligence Unit books, you know that I always include a short epilogue at the end of each standalone. This epilogue highlights the current couple a little, but mostly focuses as a lead-in to the next book.
But because some of you asked for a longer epilogue featuring the current couple, I wanted to offer a special something for those of you who preorder. ***If you want an exclusive bonus scene featuring Frankie, Shawn, and Isla (Shawn's daughter), make sure you DON'T MISS THIS.***
This scene won't be released with the book, and it won't be available anywhere else (EVER) other than here, as a preorder special. You must sign up on my website to get it!
So, tell me! Who's excited for this sexy single-dad romance?!

I Will Never Move Again. Ever.
So, it's been a minute since I last made a blog post. In a nutshell, here's why:
1. Titanic-sized Day Job project (complete with a few disasters, but we all survived)
2. MAJOR book stuff (more on that in a sec)
3. I, uh, moved without intending to.
About that third thing. There is this house that's very near to where I lived that the Mr. and I have always swooned over. It's gorrrrrrrgeous. Of course, when we moved to our town, it was firmly not on the market. But the Mr. always said, "If that house ever goes up for sale, we're going to buy it." And I laughed, because it is SO close to the other place that it seemed crazy.
You get where I'm going here, right?
At the end of April, The House went on the market. And I just so happened to be running by EXACTLY as the agent was putting up the sign. So I texted the Mr. and said "Haha, your house is for sale."
And we went and looked at it. And we fell in looooove with it. And we have a rock star agent of our own who made unicorn magic happen...
And we bought the house, sold our other house, and moved in two weeks ago.
I am here to tell you that unexpectedly moving is a lot. There were tears. There were sore muscles. There were trips to the dump. Trips to Goodwill. More trips to the dump. But slowly, slowly, we got the boxes packed, moved, and unpacked (all in the midst of That Massive Day Job Project, during which I worked 12-hour days for about a month). We are over the moon thrilled with the new house, and the teens and the pups are all adjusting happily.
I did bump the re-release of the Cross Creek books (remember, we going to talk about that book stuff) from July to August because of all the insanity, but you can look for those on August 3. Each book will get a super fun new epilogue, as well as a sexy new cover. We'll talk all about those in my very next post.
But, in the meantime, tell me! Have you ever moved? And how did it go? Was it local, like mine, or did you go far? And did you take a lot of trips to the dump, too (was that just me?!) Tell all, my reader darlings!

Library love (and other adventures)
Y'all, I have a confession.
I'm in love with my library.
Let's be honest--it's hard NOT to love a place that lets you borrow books for free! As if that wasn't enough, my library has an amazing selection, they take requests (they DO! You can ask your librarians to order titles from your favorite author/s, and it helps them know what books to order. Crazy, right?!), and right now, ours lets you drive up for contactless pickup of your holds.
My girls and I go to our library weekly (either for pickup or to browse while masked and socially distanced), and I never leave empty-handed. It's really fun to see what grabs our attention.
Do you go to your library? Have you ever put in an order request? Tell me your library stories, friends! And next time you head to your local book spot, thank your librarians for being awesome.
