"You're a Really Nice Guy, You Know That?"

Because what this Tuesday needs is a pick-me-up, I present to you Exhibit A: a spoiler-free sneak peek at ADA Tara Kingston and rookie cop Xander Matthews, from The Rookie (older woman/younger man opposites attract romantic suspense. Why yes, she tried to prosecute him once upon a time, and yes. He's a bad-boy hero with a dark past he wants to leave behind...)
Tara took a step toward him, her arms softening at her sides. “You’re a really nice guy, you know that?”
The urge to correct her was strong, but Xander bit it in half and said, “Just doing my job.”
“The standard answer when someone says ‘you’re a nice guy’ is usually ‘thank you’.”
The words carried none of her usual heat, filled instead with curiosity, and hell, Xander would take her ire a million times over the beautiful, wide-open look on her face right now. “Thank you.”
Another step, and now Tara was right in front of him, close enough to touch. “How come you don’t like being called a nice guy?”
His pulse flared, but that shit about old habits was real.
This time, he stepped toward her, cutting the distance between them to inches. “The standard answer when someone says ‘thank you’ is usually ‘you’re welcome’.”
“Oh,” Tara breathed. Her lips parted to release the sound as a sigh, and suddenly, there was nothing in the universe other than him, her, and the red-hot urge to claim her mouth.
“You’re welcome, Xander.”

This is not the cover for The Rookie
This is not the cover for The Rookie.

Remember how I told you in my previous post that I planned all the couples in the Remington series before I even typed Chapter One in Deep Trouble? (more on Deep Trouble in another post!) Well, Kennedy's brother, Xander, was supposed to get a novella in the Station Seventeen series called Deep Cover. It was going to come right after Down Deep and it was going to get this sizzling hot cover image shot by photographer Wander Aguiar.
But then.
I knew I wanted to pair Xander up with the tough-as-nails ADA who'd lobbied to throw him in jail (hi, Tara!) I also knew I wanted him to have a redemption story (bad-boy-turned-good-man) and that redemption usually takes time.
Dangit!
I very reluctantly put him on hold and decided to dive directly into the Remington Medical series so Xander could have time to go to the police academy and start his rookie year as a patrol officer. But by the time I got to his book, I knew it would kick the Intelligence series off and NOT be part of the Station Seventeen series, so this photo, which I'd originally intended to be the cover image, didn't work anymore. I was SO sad not to use it (although I do use it to this day in ads and social media posts, because yummmm!)
Tell me, Tasties! Have you read The Rookie? How do you feel about redemption stories? And what about the cover The Rookie ended up with? #swoon

Better Late Than Never! Shameless Book Signing Recap
Yes, I know this signing was in November, which makes me super tardy on this post. Sadly, I ended up testing positive for Covid a few days after I came home from this event, and it wiped me OUT. Then the holidays were here, and life got crazy. But I would be suuuuuuper remiss if I didn't share the highlights with you. It was THAT fun!
This event is truly always one of my favorites, and I hadn’t been since 2019 (I’m giving you more side-eye, Covid) I got to meet and see so many of you this year, and I loved every second. Here are some fun pictures from the very last Shameless Book Signing!
Me with model Eric Guilmette (on both The Rookie and Crossing Hope), photographer Christopher John, and cover model Brock Grady (on The Saint)

Cover model, Brock Grady (you’ll recognize him from the cover of The Saint), hung out with me at my table, and we had the best time signing books for readers and taking loads of photos and just generally having a blast. We went the whole six hours with barely a lull, so by the end, we were pretty loopy–I bet you can–but my face actually hurt from all the smiling and laughing.
With Xio Axelrod and Nina Crespo, two of my favorite authors!

I truly had the best time. I'm looking forward to 2023 events--I'll be at Apollycon in Washington DC in April for sure! Stay tuned to the Appearances page on my website for all the latest on where I'll be this year. I can't wait to see everyone!
