Picture Book Feature: The Farmer and the Clown

The blurb on the jacket flap goes:
Home.
You know where it is
when you're there.
But sometimes
you get a bit separated from home,
and you may need a little help
finding your way back.
The story begins with a farmer who watches a circus train pass by his vast field. Ack! Somebody falls off the last car and the train chugs away without anyone noticing. The farmer hurries f...

Goodbye, Mrs. Henderson
Thought I'd hold myself accountable this week.
One of my goals this year is to spend more time painting. Besides the art lessons I took when I was very small with my sisters (gosh, I must have mentioned previously that we dreaded those Sunday evenings because we were made to go), I'm basically self-taught.
And it has been such a surprisingly empowering path. Though I confess, it was extremely intimidating at first ...

Picture Book Feature: Gifts from the Enemy

"I was 13 years old when the German soldiers marched into town and killed poor Papa.
I was 14 when, in the middle of the night, they forced their way into our home and took my older brother Shmuel away.
I was 15 when the Nazis came for me. I didn't even have the chance to hug Mama and little Hirsh good-bye. It was the last time I would ever see them again."

2 Reviews, 2 Pins & Here We Go {Finally}!
Last year, I entered Little Orchid's Sea Monster Trouble in a Writers' Digest competition. Didn't win anything but I received this feedback from my judge:
"In Little Orchid's Sea Monster Trouble by Claudine Gueh Yanting we are presented with a story that weaves the power of myth and fable into a story that feels as important today to our contemporary society as it might have around the village center centuries ago. Obviously, that's one of the goals here - to create a kind of moder...

The Boy on the Porch

There's nothing they can do but take the boy, Jacob, in. (Not that they aren't secretly happy to.)
The boy doesn't talk. He taps. Tap tap tap. Tap-tap, tap-tap. It takes Marta a while to figure out that's how he communicates. John trades in his belts and hat at the stor...
