Picture & Quote Inspirations: The Smell of Possibility
Hey there, how's everyone this past week?
Me? I've been pushing myself bit by bit at work. Not soaring to the sky, but ... still flapping on. I'll always need a dose of motivation on work productivity. So ... ready?
{All images from Pinterest, linked to the pages they were shared on that platform.}
Have you worked hard today? Given it your best? (Or at least 85-90% of your best?) Well done, my dear!
And remember, the idea is to keep burning bright, not burning out. For it'll take us a lot more wo...

The Street We Grew Up Fearing
It is that spooky time of the year ~~~
I used to love getting spooked. By stories. By films (does anyone else's neck prickle at the mention of Carrie, the Prom Queen? And Freddy Kreuger?). By tales we told one another in school. I still seek the thrill once in a while.
And recently, I came across this interview with horror writer, R. L. Stine .
Don't know who he is?
Gasp! Oh, the horror!
R. L. Stine is the author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series. I haven't read the former, but I was a huge,...

Picture Book Feature: Red

"Who saw what happened?" our teacher asks.I've read about this picture book on several blogs some time ago. It is about bullying. It is about standing up to the bully. It is almost everything we would expect from a children's book on this alarming issue.
Should I say something? Why me?
Me? Against the rest of the class?
No way. I'm not crazy.
What I want to do is scream really loud.
And pound my fists.
And yell that it has to stop.
But I stay silent.
Bet you didn't expect though ...
The protagonist of...

Picture & Quote Inspirations: Stoke that Fire
Last week, I came across several blogs all discussing the same topic: how discouraging it can get in our field of writing, getting published and selling.
Thought I'll contribute a round of pictures/pins to cheer us on and stoke that productivity fire (don't worry, it's a gentle kindle). I could certainly use these whenever my own fire subsides beneath wet wood and smelly smoke replaces it.
Ready?
Reminder to self: block out all the could-haves and should-haves, and focus on your work today. Some...

Middle Grade Feature: The Magician's Elephant

I must be on a poetic, breathtaking wintry-read mood these two weeks. {Have you checked out my feature of the quaint, wordless Fox's Garden last week?}
This week, for my middle-grade recommendation, I have:
an orphan surviving on a fortune teller's words, a mistreated elephant, and a down-and-out magician.
"Speak," said the fortune-teller. "Ask."
"My parents," said Peter.
"That is your question?" said the fortune-teller. "They are dead."
Peter's hands trembled. "That is not my question," he said. "...

Picture Book Feature: Fox's Garden

That it is about a fox, lost in the forest. It finds its way into a village and tries to seek shelter.
A dangerous being! Fiery red, unfamiliar creature from the woods!Folks drive it away. Shoo! Kick! Off you go!
It runs away, into a deserted greenhouse.
Only a boy sees it.
He brings a basket of food and enters the greenhouse ...
What can I tell you about this picture book?
That sometimes only children seem to be able to understand the need to be kind and...

Have You Found Your Three Hobbies?

I have a hobby (or two) to make me money ~ tutoring and writing.
I also have a hobby to keep me in shape ~ swimming.
And one (or three) to help me stay creative ~ reading, writing & painting.
Though of late, one group of hobbies is slightly weaker than the other two. Self-awareness and honesty are always important to anyone who's out there making her own path as she walks.
Honest moment: I know I need...

* New cover for Little Orchid ~ thanks to everyone who chipped in!
Some time ago, I decided to pull my first picture ebook, My Clearest Me, off all retailers. Here's why: Important! Don't Buy My Book.
Now that it is officially unavailable on Amazon, Kobo, B&N and all, I can finally offer it elsewhere.
Here.
I can finally offer it here.

Three Remarkable Journeys. Three Unwavering Spirits.

If you want to do it, you can do it. The question is: Do you want to do it?
~ Nellie Bly, Girl Reporter
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the public, inspired by Jules Verne's AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS, was thirsty for adventure. Many adored the idea of travelling around the world. Three indomitable spirits stepped up and made their individual, fascinating journeys.
THOMAS STEVENS, WHEELMAN, 1884
A young American miner, who wa...

In Case You're Checking In ...

I've been trying to keep up with work but it's been pathetic. Don't want to waste your time reading a rushed through book feature, so I promise I'll be back blogging very soon...
