The Cash Countess by Samantha Hastings

The Cash Countess
Rapunzel meets "Downton Abbey" in this sweet Gilded Age romance!
Miss Cordelia Jones is an American Princess, but her story is no fairytale.
Eighteen-year-old Cordelia Jones is locked in her tower until she promises to marry Lord Thomas Ashby, the eighth Earl of Farnham. Cordelia doesn’t want to leave her American home or Stuyvesant Bradley, whom she has loved since childhood. But Stuyvesant leaves on a trip and Cordelia is pressured by her overbearing mother to marry a stranger.
Coerced into a loveless marriage, Cordelia finds herself an alien in a decaying English country house where customs and manners are so different from home. Worst yet, accidents seem to befall her at every corner. The more she begins to care for her husband, the more perilous her life becomes. Is she unlucky, or is someone trying to kill the newest cash countess?

Sanctuary for Seers by Kathleen Baldwin

SANCTUARY FOR SEERS by Kathleen Baldwin

Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I absolutely devoured the last book in the Stranje House series. Seraphina is called a mouse, but she shows her strength and her power to heal throughout the story. I love how she picks up on little details like Sherlock Holmes, but she also sees demons (so cool). The girl that was abandoned by her family and often overlooked shines when she finally accepts herself and helps others heal from their trauma. Author Kathleen Baldwin does offer the exciting conclusion and final battle this series deserves, but the beauty is in the details.

I love all the books in the Stranje House series and I would highly recommend them to teens and adults.

Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini

Canary Girls by Jennifer ChiaveriniRating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A fascinating story about female munition workers during WWI who also played football (soccer); they were called the Canary girls. There are three POVs and they are all compelling. April is young and joins the factory for better hours and pay then being in service. Lucy’s husband is a soldier and she works to be able to keep their home and meet the bills. She will also do anything to bring her husband home and hopes her contribution makes a difference. Helen’s father was German and she’s a suffragette. She marries Mr. Purcell whose father owns several factories. One of which is converted to munitions. The TNT in the bombs turns the women’s skin yellow and bleached the color from their hair. Some munitionettes even died from blood poisoning. The characters and their lives are fascinating. The author truly brings this time period and these incredible women to life. A must read for all historical fiction fans. Don’t miss the author’s notes at the end. They are fascinating!

A great read-alike: The Call of the Wrens by Jenni L. Walsh.

Discussion Questions: An Improbable Season by Rosalyn Eves

An Improbable Season by Rosalyn Eves

Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

An absolutely charming story about three cousins who go to London for the season! Thalia is a poet. Charis is a naturalist. And Kalli hopes to find love and fun at the parties. Nothing goes to plan, but the young ladies learn who they are and discover love. I adored every word! A must read for Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer fans.

AnImprobably Season by Rosalyn Eves

DiscussionQuestions

1.   In what ways is the character’s season “Improbable”?

2.   After Kalli is accidentally “compromised” should she acceptthe marriage proposal? Is her decision based on her own wishes or the good ofthe family?

3.   Why do you think Thalia ignores Adam’s advice about Mr.James Darby? How is James like the other romantic poets of the day: PercyShelley and Lord Byron?

4.   How is Charis and Mr. Leveson’s romance like Pride andPrejudice? Which character do you think represents Pride and whichone Prejudice?

5.   Which sister should apologize and why? Kalli or Thalia?

6.   Kalli says, “Just because I don’t want to be a publishedauthor like you or scientist like Charis—just because I don’t need everyone inthe world to know my name—doesn’t mean what I want doesn’t matter.” Do youagree?

7.   Should Charis have warned L.M. about her rebuttal essay tothe publisher? Charis says, “I thought you valued the give-and-take of ideas.”Do you agree with her opinion of the world of science?

8.   Was Kalli right to end the engagement by letter? Why doesshe not reveal her true feelings?

9.   How does Thalia rescue herself?

10. Didany of the matches surprise you? Which couple was your favorite? How do you thinkthey will write their “next chapter”?

When Miss Tiffany Woodall assumes the identity of her half-brother after his death, she realizes she isn’t the only one with a secret to hide in this historical series debut, perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Sherry Thomas.

1784 London. Miss Tiffany Woodall didn’t murder her half-brother, but she did bury him in the back garden so that she could keep her cottage. Now, the confirmed spinster has to pretend to be Uriah and fulfill his duties as the Duke of Beaufort’s librarian while searching Astwell Palace for Uriah’s missing diamond pin, the only thing of value they own. Her ruse is almost up when she is discovered by Mr. Samir Lathrop, the local bookseller, who tries to save her from drowning while she's actually just washing up in a lake after burying her brother.

Her plan is going by the book, until the rector proposes marriage and she starts to develop feelings for Mr. Lathrop.  But when her childhood friend, Tess, comes to visit, Tiffany quickly realizes her secret isn’t the only one hidden within these walls.  The body of a servant is found, along with a collection of stolen items, and someone else grows mysteriously ill. Can Tiffany solve these mysteries without her own disguise  being discovered? If not, she’ll lose her cottage and possibly her life.

Book Review: Queen Bee by Amalie Howard

Queen Bee by Amalie Howard

*Can you find the 5 bees that I added to the graphic?

Amalie Howard has created a delightful mashup of Regency England and a modern high school romance. Her diverse cast is endearing and empowering. Their clothes might be so 1817, but their speech is very modern. One can’t help but root for Ela as she extracts her revenge on the mean girl, “Queen Bee.” Set in the 1810s, the stakes are much higher. Lady Ela loses everything because of Poppy’s lies. Her good name/title. Her home. Her father. She comes to London under a new name and means to make everyone who betrayed her pay—Machiavellian style. Including the marquess who broke her heart. Themes of accountability and forgiveness and weaves seamlessly through the story. This charming historical romcom is the perfect Bridgerton for teens (and adults)!
