The Lily of Ludgate Hill by Mimi Matthews

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another fantastic Victorian romance from Mimi Matthews. You don't have to have read the other books in the Belles of London series to enjoy this story, but I highly recommend it because they are wonderful reads.

Lady Anne Deveril was once secretly engaged to Mr. Felix Hartford, but they quarreled. Six and half years later, the sparks are still there when Anne asks Felix for a favor. He agrees to help her, however, the source of their quarrel is still a problem. Anne's mother, the dowager Countess of Arundell, can't cope with the death of her husband and has turned to spiritualism, laudanum, and obsessive mourning. Meanwhile, Felix is struggling with his own family problems. Anne must choose a second time between duty and love.

Fans of Victorian novels will appreciate the nods to Queen Victoria's strict mourning rituals and spiritualism. This romance features 'enemies to lovers' and 'second chance' tropes. A sweet romance with a very satisfying ending.

1. Your story has my favorite trope: Enemies to Lovers! What other tropes are in your book?
Never Getting Back Together is a small town, second-chance romance! It’s also a sweet romance, so I’m hoping that it’s accessible for a lot of different readers.

2. I love that Quinn Kelley is an ambitious young woman and wants to start her own business. Who are some tv/movie characters like Quinn?
Ooh, I love this question! Like you said, Quinn is full of dreams and ambition, but she’s also a small-town girlie at heart. She’s part Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls and part Melanie Smooter from Sweet Home Alabama.

3. Which classic literary hero is Ty Rossi the most similar to? Darcy? Rochester? Heathcliffe?
Ty and Quinn have such a long, complicated history as well as a deep, unwavering love for one another. So, I’d say he’s more of a George Knightley…minus the age gap and annoying mansplaining habit.

4. How was writing your second book different than your first? A huge shout-out to Krysti's charming debut romcom, Not If I Date You First.
First of all, thank you for the shout-out!
Writing Never Getting Back Together felt like a fever dream. I wrote and edited the original version of the story in less than a month, because I was in love with the idea, and I wanted to have it done in time to enter the Watty Awards in 2020, which it won! The Watty Awards, for those who don’t already know, are awarded to the stories Wattpad’s editors feel are the best books published on their platform in any given year. So, that was really exciting! That is typically what my writing process looks like, though. I’ll dither in an artistic existential crisis for months to years and then crank out a book in a month. It’s probably not the healthiest approach, but here we are!

5. Who would be the perfect person to buy your books for? I’m thinking Christmas lists!
The main characters in this book are 21 years old and they’re seeing each other for the first time since they broke up in high school. Because of that, this book would be great for readers of both Young Adult and adult romance, particularly for readers who like their romance on the sweeter, low-spice end of the spectrum.

6. Lastly, tell us how to stay in touch with you.
I’m literally always on Instagram. You can find me there when I should be doing absolutely anything else. I’m occasionally on TikTok, and I do have a newsletter that I send on a somewhat regular basis. I also do the social media for my local indie bookshop’s non-profit, Brain Food Books, which has donated over 20,000 books to people in need since 2022!
