Fate’s Fables is on the Fussy Librarian’s recommended reading list!

Apparently, the fussy librarian is very fussy about the books she’ll recommend, so I’m pretty excited she’s given Fate’s Fables her stamp of approval.

If you’re picky about your books too, but totally overwhelmed by the huge choices of ebooks out there, you should join the Fussy Librarian’s email list for daily deals, where you can choose from 40 genres and select content preferences such as the amount of sex and violence.

Did you know the words ‘tree’ and ‘true’ are joined at the root?

OakDruid

If you’ve read Fate’s Fables, you may have picked up on my fascination with trees. The more gnarled and knotty the better, as far as I’m concerned. Check out my Pinterest board on Trees for some gorgeous woodsy visuals. One of the main characters in my book is the oak tree. There’s so much mystique surrounding this particular tree, most notably the druids who considered the oak sacred. This gave me a strong spiritual foundation on which to build Finn’s profound connection to nature.

The dominant theme within Fate’s Fables is how words create reality. Whenever Fate travels from one fable to the next, the words lift off the pages of the Book of Fables and swirl around her, building into sights and sounds that match her imagination. She’s also given the power of the Words of Making, an ability she uses lightly at first, until she realizes her own written words manifest into the physical world instantaneously. And with great consequence. She had to learn to search her heart for the truth and write her Words of Making from that wise, inner place, rather than deciding what was best for everyone by coming from the place of ego and mind.

With all this in mind, you’ll see why I found this TEDEd video by Gina Cooke and Brad Purnell to be very interesting indeed. This video “describes the poetic relationship between ‘tree’ and ‘true. Trees have been metaphors for steadfastness and faithfulness for as long as the word true has defined the same qualities”.

Plus the animation is excellent!

Happy New Year!

Wow, I can’t believe we’re starting another year. I don’t know about you, but 2013 blurred by in a flurry of activity for me. That’s probably why I’ve welcomed the winter months, quite content to retreat into the warmth of hearth and home. Not to mention the opportunity to get lots of writing done!  :D

Happy Holidays!

It’s certainly been an interesting year being a newly published author. I’ve enjoyed multiple book signings at Chapters, received a bunch of fantastic 4 and 5 star reviews and gotten thousands of copies of Fate’s Fables into the hands of readers worldwide. Best of all, I’ve met some truly wonderful people, both online and off, throughout the year.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your enthusiastic support.

Christmas countdown magical discovery #2

I certainly thought I’d be doing a whole lot more countdowns before Christmas Eve snuck up on me, but as usual, I’ve gotten carried away with all the holiday hustle and bustle.

Here’s a piece of Christmas magic I found for you. The beginnings of a painting by Chris Jones, which smoothly comes to life in beautiful detail to the music of Carol of the Bells. Watching this gives me the same feeling of seeing a magnificent sunrise. I hope you enjoy it too.

Christmas countdown magical discovery #1

In the mood to have those heart strings tugged? Then you have to watch this warm and fuzzy Disney-style animated short called The Bear & The Hare. It’s actually an advert for John Lewis, but it’s far from being a mere commercial.

This film was done traditionally, using stop-motion and hand-drawn 2D animation. Pretty much everything was done in camera, utilizing a real set, lighting and lens. Each of the animated characters were printed onto mounted paper and laser cut. Nearly 4,000 frames were used to create the fluid movement of each character. This is a real work of art.

For the behind-the-scenes details, be sure to check out the second video.

Enter to WIN a one-of-a-kind Fate’s Fables bracelet or a Fate’s Motto poster!

To celebrate the holidays, I’m doing a special giveaway. If you’ve read Fate’s Fables, you’ll have fun answering the trivia questions for a chance to win the bracelet. Each question is based on how the imagery used in the Fate’s Fables book trailer relates to characters, scenes and locations in the book.

Too busy Christmas shopping, baking cookies and trimming the tree to answer questions? No worries. Enter the giveaway by tweeting about the giveaway or any of the other 3 share buttons for a chance to win the poster.

Reality sucks. Make-believe rocks is Fate’s motto. That is, of course, until she finds out the magical world of make-believe inside the Book of Fables is a whole lot more scary and dangerous than what she thought was a sucky reality back in the real world.

At the end of the contest, there will be two winners. One who will receive a one-of-a-kind Fate’s Fables bracelet for answering the 8 questions and another winner who will receive the Fate’s Motto poster just for entering. Best of luck!

Plus, if you have a fantasy lover on your Christmas list, you can buy them the print edition of Fate’s Fables for only $12.59 and get an eBook copy for yourself for just .99 cents!
