Splitting the Difference Between Past + Present

While it may be a few years before there’s enough content to fill a book about me and my daughter, essays enable me to share the evolution of our relationship in (somewhat) real time. The latest one is included in the Dec. issue of Red magazine in the UK, and captures my experience of moving Laurie and her BFF closer to campus last summer. As you might remember from this post, that week felt like a priceless stream of do-over moments for me: a thousand second chances to experience what I’d missed in her first 18 years. Below is my 1800-word attempt to translate that parallel universe of a week…advance apologies if a magnifying glass is needed to read it.

If someone had told my parents 20 years ago that the high school from which their daughter was suspended several times and graduated two months pregnant would induct her into its Hall of Fame, they’d have no good reason to believe it. But tonight, the girl who was anything but a high-school honor student was honored as an author and journalist. The teenage version of me was pretty sure GPAs and SATs did not define my future…the adult version of me is now certain of it.

"There’s a part in ‘Splitting the Difference’ where you write that one of the only..."

“There’s a part in ‘Splitting the Difference’ where you write that one of the only upsides to death is a renewed appreciation for living and for the living. In that vein, my personal marker for what makes a piece of art—book, film, painting, whatever—great is when it does something similar. Your memoir did this. It heightened my senses, and made me feel harshly alive and present and aware of the moment I was living in. This is a gift, and a great one. I thank you for it.”
