Where Gratitude Lives
The 365 days of 2014 brought far more joy into my life than pain. There were no boyfriends, but there were loads of memorable dates. No international trips, but my domestic travel experiences became essays published in Marie Claire, Red Magazine and YahooTravel.com. Encountered the fragility of my own health on more than one occasion, but finally realized the benefit of spending an eighth of my income on health insurance all these years. The ritual of scribbling down the high moments—big or little—and storing ‘em in a jar is an attempt to keep myself present amid the chaos and (ideally) cultivating a spirit of daily gratitude.
Keeping a Grateful Jar means capturing the quotidian: winning that $200 Amazon gift card during a particularly lean month! Medicine to heal your pneumonia only requires a $14 co-pay! Your new doctor is less than one avenue block away! The birthday humidifier from your parents holds 120 hours of winter-combating moisture!
It means acknowledging the milestones: your mom’s help in whittling your four bicoastal storage units down to one; creating new traditions with friends for Thanksgiving and Christmas; finding the time and money to paint your foyer in your secret favorite color (radioactive lime green); and hosting your daughter for nine champagne-soaked days on her first trip to NYC.
It also means recording the heart-pumpingly huge: rights to your first book being bought by Universal for a TV series! Biopsies coming back negative! You and your daughter’s feature in InTouch magazine! Signing the contract for an audio version of your memoir, out in Spring 2015! Getting inducted into your California hometown’s Hall of Fame!
When you finally spread out the 12 months of highlights, you can’t help reliving the joys, the many little steps that built toward a particular moment or the palpable relief that came with others. Ultimately, these scraps of paper are tangible proof of a 2014 that’s neither lost…nor filled with loss.
