I remember reading By the Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman and Danny Champion of the World by Roald Dahl over and over again when I was about 12 or so. Another more contemporary title that I loved as an adult was Holes by Louis Sachar. While the subject matter differs from that in The Saturday Boy, they are realistic stories with very relatable main characters. Hope this helps!

“Easy reading is damn hard writing.”

Jennifer Weiner
“Cram your head with characters and stories. Abuse your library privileges. Never stop looking at the world, and never stop reading to find out what sense other people have made of it. If people give you a hard time and tell you to get your nose out of a book, tell them you're working. Tell them it's research. Tell them to pipe down and leave you alone.”
Jennifer Weiner

Stephen King
“The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them -- words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.”
Stephen King

“If television's a babysitter, the Internet is a drunk librarian who won't shut up.”
Dorothy Gambrell, Cat and Girl Volume I

“It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.”
