How to Love Yourself

I am writing this on Valentine's Day, but its applicable on any day. Valentine's Day can be hard because of societal expectations that you not only be in a love relationship, but that relationship has to be Hallmark-card-worthy! The message is that unless someone loves you, you don't have anything to celebrate on this day of love. What an incredibly limited view of love!

Love is not dictated by the degree to which someone loves you. Your "lovableness" is a permanent aspect of your spirit. Love is not limited to the love between two people in a love relationship. Love is boundless and forever, as your spirit it.

Take back your power and define this day (and every day) of love for yourself!  You are the one you are looking for. Someone else can't complete you because you are already complete. You are enough.

On this day, put your hands on your heart and take a deep breathe.  Pledge your love and support of yourself.  Cherish yourself.  Believe in you.

How to be positive

I'm sure you've heard how important it is to be positive.  And how "bad" it is to be negative. And thinking negative thoughts draws negative to you.  The prevailing new age wisdom is that each time you have a negative thought, immediately replace it with a positive thought.  The problem with this is negative thoughts are symptoms. And symptoms are a message from the body-mind.  When we immediately dismiss a negative thought, we shoot the messenger.

The other thing is, negative thoughts are energetically weak.  Even one positive thought negates the effects of a bushel-full of negative ones, especially if its accompanied for positive feeling and emotion. So give yourself a break and don't worry too much about the effects of your negative thoughts, which can just make you more negative! A single negative thought has about as much power as a dust bunny under your bed.

To be positive, we need a shift in perspective....the higher-self perspective. When you are feeling negative and thinking small, it's because you are living from a small part of you.  That small part categorizes everything as either bad or wrong, or good or right.  But the thing is, nothing is bad! Your symptoms aren't bad.  They are messages from a part of you that needs some healing, or is in the process of healing. Either way, its all good.

I know so many individuals who are experiencing all kind of physical-emotional symptoms -- anxiety, racing heart, shaking, vibrations and tingling, strange transient aches and pains, feeling weepy and vulnerable. And they think it is bad. This is very understandable given the cultural belief that symptoms = pathology. But our body-minds are responding to the ever increasing frequencies on the planet. Our body-minds are making the necessary adjustments to sync with our spirit.  Its all good.

To be positive, have compassion for yourself.  Send love to the part of you that is afraid. Send love to the part of you that is thinking negative thoughts. Send love to the part of you that thinks it's bad. Every part of you is deserving of love. The simple act of feeling compassion automatically shifts you to your higher self.  And that's how you become positive. More about this here.

When I asked the Siri feature on my phone for directions the other day, I automatically said "thank you," forgetting that Siri is not a real person.  Her answer? "It's all good, Heidi."  Ain't that the truth!!

How to Let Go

On a recent boat trip our boat broke down just short of our destination. We had to be towed back to the marina at a slow speed, which took over an hour. Now this may seem a big disappointment. But I embraced the experience as an opportunity to let go.

As we were being towed, there was nothing to do but let go. I laid down on the boat cushions and slipped into a very deep state of relaxation. It felt like the sun was kissing my cheeks and the breezes caressing my hair. I opened my eyes several times, half expecting to see someone touching me. I felt enveloped in a benevolent, loving presence. Because when we let go, we make room for spirit to come in.
By the time we reached the marina, I didn't want it to end!  I felt completely de-stressed.

As children, letting go was exhilarating. We spun around until we became so dizzy we fell over. We took our hands off the handlebars while riding our bikes. We swung so high on the playground swings that our stomachs did flip-flops. But somewhere along the way, we began to believe that letting go was dangerous. We started to try and control situations in order to feel safe. But that control can get in the way of health and well-being.

Letting go does not mean giving up our dreams, denying that you are afraid, or becoming out of control.  Letting go means surrendering the details and the need to control outcomes.

Here are 3 ways to let go:

     1. Recreate a childhood experience of letting go.  Go ride a bike or swing on the swings at the local playground!
     2. Love the part of you that is afraid to lose control
     3. Do some "receive-release" breathing.  Deep breathe for 10 minutes with the silent mantra of "receive" on every inhale, and "release" on every exhale.  Breathe in I receive support.  And breathe out I release control.

How to Use Your Voice for Healing

"Our voice is the most healing instrument. The use of the voice for healing is called toning, and it's probably the oldest and most natural form of sound healing that there is." ~ Jonathan Goldman

While taking a walk in a local park, I was delighted to hear a man doing vocalizations in the woods. I was able to record the sound on my phone in the first 7 seconds of this video:

Why was I delighted to hear this sound? Because most people are too inhibited to practice vocalizations. I felt honored to witness this healing sound.

Vocalizations are a powerful sound energy therapeutic technique. Chanting, moaning, humming and sighing, accompanied by deep breathing, can release the energetic effects of trauma and associated tension, pain, and emotion. This is particularly the case when intoning a sound on a single breath, as the man in the video was doing.

Unfortunately most people unconsciously hold their breathe and restrict their voice to prevent suppressed emotions from surfacing. The best way to approach vocalizing is in a non-judging, unconditionally accepting state of mind. Give yourself permission to make sounds. Make an agreement with yourself that you won't judge the sound that comes out of your mouth. Its going to feel awkward at first, but if you set aside a time to practice every day, and keep showing up with willingness, you will break through and experience a release of tension, heaviness, and negative emotions. This will leave you feeling lighter, clearer, and more positive. It may not happen the first time, or even the first week, but it will happen.

If you would like to know more about using the voice for healing, check out Jonathan Goldman's book, The 7 Secrets of Sound Healing .

How Flower Essences Can Heal Your Issues

Flower essences are vibrational medicine. The original and most well-known of the flower essences were developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a London physician frustrated with conventional medicine. In 1930 he closed his lucrative medical practice and set off to find a new system of healing involving plants.

Dr. Bach discovered that the intake of high vibrational substances, such as plants and flowers, can raise low vibrational frequencies and positively impact health. Following this initial discovery, he determined how to transfer the vibrations of plants into water.  By infusing spring water with windflowers, either by "sun-steeping" or boiling, he created Bach Flower Remedies.

There are 38 remedies in Bach's system.  Read through the descriptions to see which one(s) best match your issues. Links to purchase are embedded in the names.  Each remedy costs $10-$15 and lasts for months.  I found that after a few months of putting a few drops of a remedy in my drink each day, the description barely fit me. How to use a Labyrinth for Healing

Whenever I go to the beach, I like to draw a 7-circuit labyrinth in the sand with a stick. Its the quickest and easiest way to construct a labyrinth and walk it's path.  Click here for directions on how to make your own labyrinth.

What is a Labyrinth?
The first labyrinths appeared over three thousand years ago on coins and pottery. They were also carved into rock faces, and built into the ground and in churches and cathedrals.
There are many different types of labyrinths. The seven-circuit labyrinth is the most common type and has been found in all cultures and time periods.
Unlike a maze, there is only one entrance to a labyrinth and only one way to the center with no dead ends. A labyrinth is perfectly balanced with an equal number of right and left turns. In a seven-circuit labyrinth there are seven right and left turns.
Amazing Patterns
Within the labyrinth is sacred geometry and many different patterns, relationships, and proportions found in nature and life. One of the many patterns in labyrinths is the meandering pattern, found in the flow of water and throughout nature in such varied forms as the pattern of lightening and the pattern sutures form between the cranial bones. In the flow of water, this pattern slows down the flow for the support of life and is associated with the filtering and oxygenation of water. Water that flows too quickly creates erosion; too slowly creates stagnation. Walking the labyrinth slows down our rhythms and aligns us with this meandering pattern.
The labyrinth also contains the Golden Mean - a rule of proportions found in nature that guides the growth of any organism. The Golden Mean can be found in shells, plants and flowers, animals and humans down to the cellular level. These patterns represent nature's design for efficiency and simplicity. The labyrinth invites us to move and align ourselves with these basic patterns that create and sustain life and vitalize us. This simplicity is experienced on a kinesthetic level.    The Experience
The labyrinth is a tool for expanding the spirit, focusing the mind, and transforming and improving our health and sense of well-being. A person's energy field can expand two to three times its usual size after a walk through the labyrinth, and with it comes a feeling of being centered, balanced and one with the universe. The labyrinth helps us to be in the moment and remember who we are and why we are here.
The walk to the center of a labyrinth is a metaphor for going to our own center. Following the path occupies your logical left brain, freeing up your intuitive and creative right brain. It relaxes the mind and is a tool for connecting with the divine within ourselves. In our fast-paced and stressful society, entering the labyrinth is a simple way to allow ourselves to disconnect from the outside world and go within. Out of chaos order is restored. In this balanced state, the body can heal itself. The seven-circuit labyrinth is an especially powerful tool for balancing the seven major chakras, or energy centers. Seven is also found in the patterns of nature.
Earth Effects
The ancients discovered that building labyrinths affected drainage and weather patterns, and drew underground water to the area beneath the labyrinth. As people walk the labyrinth, the energy at the site is increased and a sacred site is formed. The focused attention people have while walking a labyrinth feeds the earth.
How to Walk A Labyrinth
There is no wrong or right way to walk a labyrinth, and every experience of walking the labyrinth can be a different one. Before entering, take a moment and focus on what you would like to gain from walking the labyrinth. This can take the form of a question or a problem you would like to solve. Silence should be observed and cell phones turned off. Be open to any release or enlightenment that may occur.
Start at the entrance and follow the path at your own pace, without rushing. At the center, you may want to take a moment to meditate. When you feel ready, follow the path back to the entrance.
After walking the labyrinth, reflect on your experience and journal any insights you gained. Pay attention to your dreams after walking the labyrinth, and take note of any synchronistic or coincidental experiences. I have received helpful insights regarding the issue I focused on during my labyrinth walks for up to several days afterwards.

Life is not a Performance

We are human beings, not human thinkings or human doings. Just be. ~ Deepak Chopra

Life is not a performance. Its a unique expression of your divinity. Unfortunately most of us have been conditioned to believe that who we are is what we do, and that our value is dependent to how well we do it. But you have the power to choose what you believe. Once you become aware that you are living from conditioning, that realization comes with a choice. You can continue to believe that life is about performing, which creates stress and tension.  Or you can choose a new belief that creates harmony and balance.

Take a deep breathe.  Let go of the pressure to perform. And allow your unique expression to flow through you.

There Are No Coincidences

Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics."  ∼Albert Einstein, Ph.D.
I used this quote in my first book. Recently this concept from physics was illustrated in my life in a surprising and unexpected way.
As a dog lover, I do on rare occasions look at pictures of dogs for adoption, even though I already have two.  Dogs are addictive.  Like potato chips, you can’t just get one. The other day I did indulge myself and take a peek online at the website where we adopted one of our rescues, and a bonded pair caught my eye – a yellow lab and a cocker spaniel  The description of the dogs said that one couldn't survive without the other and they would have to be adopted as a pair.

I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to add these two to our household and daydreamed about them for a few minutes.
The very next day I was getting out of my car in a parking lot and looked to the side to see someone with two dogs – a yellow lab and a cocker spaniel. I did a double-take. Was this the same couple I had seen online?  No – the coloring was a little different. But what are the odds of coming across two dogs almost identical to the ones I had just looked at online the day before?
Most people would probably dismiss this experience as coincidence. But these occurrences happen to me frequently and I know from my study of quantum physics that there are no coincidences! What we focus on creates our reality. I had been focused on a yellow lab and a cocker spaniel – and a yellow lab and cocker spaniel then appeared in my environment. Imagine what we can manifest if we focus on what we want – like health!
If your focus is on illness and disease - that is what you create.  If your focus is on health and vibrancy - that is what you create.  Now it’s easier for me to manifest a dog sighting because I have no emotional baggage related to dogs.  If you have emotional baggage related to your health - that creates a block to manifesting.
In order to manifest what you want, you have to fully express your negativity first.  If you are focused on illness and disease because that is what you are dealing with, you can’t deny that or suppress your anger, fear or sadness about it in order to shift into thoughts of health. It doesn’t work very well.
So allow yourself to fully express how mad, sad, frustrated, or overwhelmed you are -- or whatever it is you are feeling. Go ahead and have a meltdown. Journal about it.  Talk about it.  Cry about it.  Stomp your feet about it.  Have a healthy tantrum and let the fear out. And take deep breaths while you are doing so. When you feel better – then you can focus on health, and imagine what it would feel like to feel completely healthy. This is the process of manifestation.

By the way....in case you are wondering, the bonded pair of dogs I saw online did get adopted together. :)

Value Permanence

Playing the game of peekaboo with babies and small children has a purpose. It helps them learn object permanence. I remember hiding behind a blanket when my children were little, and then pulling the blanket away and seeing their surprise that I was still there. By the age of about two, children grasp that an object still exists even when it is hidden. They understand that their parent doesn't cease to exist just because they can't see them.

As adults we all understand object permanence, but most of the clients I work with have difficulty with the concept of value permanence. They think that their value is something that increases or decreases depending on what they are accomplishing in their life, or whether people approve of them.  But the truth is, your value never wavers. You are always valuable, no matter what. The people in your life don't determine your value.  What you "do" doesn't determine your value. You were born valuable and it is permanent. Even when you can't see it or feel it, it's still there. Peekaboo!

Breakthroughs Can Happen In an Instant

A few winters ago, while walking in the woods, my attention was drawn to the sun shining on this frozen puddle of water at the base of two trees. It almost looked like a heart at its center. As a child, I would step on the ice that had formed across the puddles overnight as I walked to the bus stop on frigid Minnesota mornings. I loved the popping sound as I broke the surface. It was such a delightful way to break something without consequences! So of course I couldn't resist stepping on this ice and popping the surface as well.

At that time, I felt like the ice -- frozen. Life is like a pebble dropped in a pond -- our actions have a ripple effect going out in every direction.  But my difficulty taking action made me feel stuck and frozen in place. I knew it was only temporary, just as the ice over this puddle will eventually melt and change its form.

Everything is made of energy, and energy is impermanent. No matter what issues you are dealing with, even if it's an issue you've had your whole life, it can change on a dime. And even when things seem frozen, there is always movement happening beneath the surface, like the water flowing through this ice dome.

Once I broke the ice, the creative juices started flowing.  I began mentally writing this blog post along with other creative ideas for taking action in my life.
What draws your attention in nature?  Take a walk outside and see what messages there are for you.
