Energy Hygiene: How to Clear Your Energy
Did you know that there is a part of your body called the subtle body? It is that part of your body that vibrates at a much higher rate than your physical body. This makes it much less dense than your physical body. The state of your subtle body, or energy body can be perceived through your intuition. You can also tell the state of your energy by how others react to your energetic vibrations. Read more about how to change your energetic vibrations here. Your subtle body includes your energy centers (chakras), energy channels (meridians), and energy field (aura).
Everyone knows how to take care of their physical body, but how do you care for your subtle body? Keeping your energy body clear is actually even more important than keeping your physical body clean, because the state of your health is a direct reflection of the state of your energy. Clogged, stagnant energy = poor health. Clear, vibrant energy = vibrant health.
How Your Energy Becomes Toxic
It's important to understand how our energy becomes disrupted in the first place. Our energy becomes toxic by:
Thinking toxic thoughts Eating a poor diet of processed foods Being in toxic indoor environments with fluorescent lighting and poor ventilation Being around toxic, negative people. Toxic energy is especially an issue for empaths. Empathic people tend to be a sponge and soak up the negativity of others. You can find out if you are an empath here. It is vital that empathic people clear their energy on a regular basis. I call this Energy Hygiene. Empaths have a life purpose of helping others and making a difference in the world, but taking on the negative energy of others can cause them to be ill and unable to actualize their purpose.
How to Know if Your Energy Needs to Be Cleared
You are probably aware of the signs that your energy needs to be cleared, but may not have made the connection between these signs and the state of your energy. Here are some examples of how clogged, stagnant energy can make you feel:
Sick and ill Dull, sluggish or fatigued Negative Scattered and unfocused Confused, overwhelmed or tenseAngry, sad, fearful, guilty or ashamed How to Clear Your Energy
There are a variety of methods to clear your energy. A session with an energy healing practitioner will clear your field, as well as drinking more filtered water and eating more raw food. Here are four more ways you can clear your energy on your own:
Nature: Spend as much time outdoors as possible. The high vibrations of natural settings naturally clears energy, so any kind of outdoor activity will help you feel clearer and lighten any burdens you are carrying. Deep, slow breathing accentuates this affect.Smudging: Light a bundle of white sage with a candle. The flame will quickly go out and the sage will begin to smoke. Use a feather to disperse this smoke all around your body to clear your energy.Epsom Salts Bath: Soak in a tub of water with a cup of Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Twenty minutes is sufficient to clear your energy.Prayer: A prayer I use for clearing energy is this "Divine/God/Universe (your choice of words), if it is in my highest good, please clear anything heavy, negative, toxic or disruptive from my energy centers, channels and field. And fill me with love, light and spiritual energy. Thank you."
It is also important to maintain healthy boundaries with others to prevent your energy from becoming disrupted in the first place. I call this Energy Ethics and you can read about it here.

How to Make Birthday Affirmations

In honor of my upcoming birthday and the new moon in Aries, I felt inspired to write about how to make the most of the most magical day of the year -- your birthday! This is the best day of the year to make wishes and affirmations, and you can optimize them by paying attention to what fears came up before your birthday. But regardless of when your birthday is, the new moon in Aries is also an excellent time to make affirmations because its the first new moon in the astrological year.
Lessons from the Solar Return
The month before your birthday is called your solar return, when the sun is returning to the position it held at the time of your birth. During your solar return month, life can be tumultuous. Your deepest fears can come up. But from these fears you can see what you don't want in your life and what you do want. Your birthday then becomes the perfect time to set intentions for what you want to create for your new year based on what came up for you during your solar return.
Here are some examples of common fears. If during your solar return one of these fears comes up....
fear of failure or making a mistakefear of being rejected or criticized fear of the unknown Then your birthday affirmation would be...
I am vibrantly successfulI am compassionately accepted I embrace my amazing future Making it Specific and Real
Now get specific about what being successful, accepted and embracing of your future means to you. What would being successful look like? What would it look like to be accepted unconditionally? What would an amazing future look like? The answers to these questions are your wishes.
Make a list of your wishes by writing them down. Now say them out loud and feel what it would be like to have them. Even better, make a vision board. You can do this with poster board, markers and magazine picture clippings. Or use one of the vision board apps.
My favorite vision board app is Success Vision Board . This app allows you to to choose pictures from your library or the web, easily move them around, select a background, add text and share to social media or a vision board community. You can even create a slide show of your vision boards and put it to music to watch each day.
If you put your poster vision board in a place you will see everyday, or look at your vision board app everyday, it sends a powerful message to your subconscious mind of what you want.
Below is a vision board I created with the app from one of my own visions:

How to Change Your Energy Vibration
I have four animals in my home who form a pack. The alpha female of the pack is my cat Penny, and boy does she let you know her place in the home! She assertively announces her presence to anyone who visits. When I'm working on my laptop at my desk, she uses her paws (with claws extended!) to pull my face toward her, demanding my attention. The dogs are afraid of her! Penny does not hesitate to remind them that she is Queen. If they dare walk too close to her, they get a swat across the face.
This is Penny amidst my potted plants, Queen of the table-top jungle.
Next in the pack hierarchy comes Stanley the dog, who is dominant over Lexi the dog. And at the bottom of the pack, the omega male, is Tony the cat.
Tony is a huge, beautiful Maine Coon afraid of his own shadow. When anyone comes to the house, he usually hides. Although Penny and Tony are a bonded pair, with the dogs it's a different story. For seven years Tony has been afraid to come into the kitchen because of the dogs. There are gates up to keep the dogs in the kitchen/family room to prevent them from attacking Tony. But the dogs will charge toward Tony through the gates, seemingly unprovoked. Which just terrifies him.
Here is Tony in his usual position, lounging on his favorite blanket.
You may say, "Poor Tony," and wonder -- why are the dogs being so "mean" to him? But Tony is not a victim. Tony is a creator. More about that later.
What Vibration Are You In?
I know a lot of people who feel like Tony, who cannot understand why people mistreat them, and violate their boundaries with unsolicited and unwanted advice. They don't understand why people seem to think they aren't competent enough to make their own decisions. The reason people treat you the way they do is because they are unconsciously reading your energy. If your energy is vibrating in unsure and uncertain, this attracts advise. If your energy field is contracted and pulled in due to insecurity, others with automatically fill what they perceive as a void by extending themselves into your space. Just like the dogs charge toward Tony.
There is nothing wrong or bad with whatever state your energy vibrates in. And there's nothing wrong or bad with how people react to your energy vibrations. Because there's no judgement in energy! The point of all this is this: The way people react to you gives you valuable information! It shows you what vibration you are putting out into the world. And once you realize what you are vibrating in, what was unconscious becomes conscious and you can do something about it.
The Choice is Yours
You have two choices in how to react once you realize the state of your energy...judgment or acceptance. If you judge yourself for your unsure vibration, you keep your energy contracted and your frequency low. If you accept yourself unconditionally, this will expand and center your energy. Because your natural state is to be in your heart and acceptance centers you in your heart. The choice is yours. Because you are the creator of your own life.
Here's an affirmation: Even though my energy has been vibrating in ______, I choose to change it by lovingly accepting myself.
Remembering the Truth
When my daughter was home for Christmas, she spent a lot of time with Tony. She told him what a courageous and brave kitty he is, pumping him up and repeatedly bringing him to the other side of the kitchen gate. I was astonished to find that after her visit, Tony's behavior completely changed. My daughter's loving attention and acceptance had shifted his energy. It was as if she helped him remember who he really is. Now the dogs no longer charge him. When I open the gate, he walks into the kitchen right past the dogs, completely confident in himself.
For seven years Tony had lived through a false premise about himself, that he was a prey animal. Tony had forgotten that he is a feline, descended from the big cats -- master predators just as powerful as the wolves that the household canines descended from. Tony had been creating attack by putting out a prey vibration, but now that he remembers who really is, his changed energy vibration creates safety.
What false belief do you have about yourself? Have you forgotten who you really are? The truth is, no matter what has happened to you, no matter what has been done to you and no matter what you think you've done -- you are whole, complete and valuable -- always and forever.

How to Tell if You Are An Empath
If you pick up on the emotional or physical pain of others,
you might be an empath.
If you are more concerned about hurting someone else's feelings than for your own, you might be an empath.
If you volunteer your time to someone in need when you don't have enough time for yourself, you might be an empath.
And if you've ever been told that you are "just too sensitive," you might be an empath.
All joking aside, if any of those descriptions fit you, I can assure you that you ARE an empath!
Characteristics of Empaths
Although empathic people are highly intuitive, they may not be aware of their intuitive abilities. In that case, they can better recognize themselves in terms of sensitivity. If you are an empath, you may have some or all of these characteristics:
Can feel the emotions and pain of others and take it on (your pain becomes my pain/your health issue becomes my health issue)Drawn to people who need help and to the healing professionsFind if very difficult to be around narcissistic/egotistical peopleEasily bored and dislike routine -- love freedom, travel and adventureHighly creative and imaginative Love nature and the outdoorsFind violent/harsh media images and messages painful Curious about the world -- crave knowledge and understandingSeek the truth and can sense when someone is lying or being inauthenticNeed alone time -- dislike public places as they feel overwhelming Self-medicate with food, drugs, or sex to numb overwhelming emotions and to ground selfTend to carry extra weight which functions as protection from negative energy and for grounding
Issues for Empaths
Due to their sensitivities and giving nature, empaths can be:
Taken advantage of and hurt by othersDrained of their energy by others which causes fatigueNeglectful of themselves and give away their energy which also causes fatigueUngrounded, which causes fatigue, lower back, hip, knee and foot pain: (click here for an article on how to get grounded)Anxious when picking up on the emotions of others, especially in the abdominal area - which can lead to the development of digestive disordersSilent when holding back their words out of fear of hurting others or being criticized, which causes sore throats, laryngitis and other ear-nose-throat disorders. The Gift of Empathy
For some empaths, their sensitivities can feel like a curse. They can feel used, abused and misunderstood. But empaths are an incredible gift to the world! Empathic people have a life purpose of helping others and making a difference, and their gift is so very needed. But an empath must know how to clear their energy and establish healthy energetic boundaries to actualize their purpose.
I will be writing a post soon on how to take care of your energy (energy hygiene), how to maintain healthy boundaries (energy ethics), and how to help others without getting drained,. Subscribe to this blog so you don't miss it!

Reinventing Yourself At Any Age
The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are it's makers. ~ Juliette Gordon Low
On a recent trip to Savannah, GA, the Juliette Low House came up on our CD-guided car tour of the historic district. Although I was a Girl Scout leader for 12 years, I forgot that the organization’s founder was born in Savannah. Girl Scouts from around the world make the pilgrimage to the Juliette Low house year round. Nine years after my Girl Scouts graduated from high school it seemed it was finally time to have my own pilgrimage. I had no idea how moving the experience would be.
Starting Over
At 51 years old, Juliette Low was a childless widow dissatisfied with the aimlessness of her life. She sought a greater purpose, a more meaningful life. So she started over by immersing herself in founding a new organization for girls. At first a gathering of just 18 girls in 1912, Girl Scouts has grown into the largest organization in the world for girls and women, touching the lives of over 50 million. A stunning legacy for someone who entered her 50s feeling aimless and empty.

As I walked through the rooms of the house, I could feel Juliette Low's presence through the pieces of her art on display. An accomplished poet and artist, Juliette sketched, painted, sculpted and even created ironwork. Her pieces often reflected her love of nature. As I looked at Juliette's creations and listened to the tour guide relate her story, I felt deeply inspired. I recalled my time as a Girl Scout leader and could see how Juliette's passion had expressed through every project I facilitated and every new skill I taught my troop.
Like Juliette Low at the time she changed her life, I am also in my 50s and reinventing myself as a teacher by starting an online school of energy healing. But truth be told, becoming a teacher is more an emergence of who I really am than a reinvention. And I'm sure it was the same for Juliette. In her later years she embraced who she really was -- an adventurous, generous spirit who wanted to help others in a big way.

Are you dissatisfied with your life? What would you like to change? What would you do if money and time were no object? What would you do if you were brave? What small step could you take toward this vision today?
Juliette Low started with a phone call to her cousin -"Come right over! I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!" Share your idea with those who will support you. Let go of the past. Let go of regrets.
As I write this, we are in the shadow of the upcoming Mars retrograde, so it isn't a good time to launch something brand new. But it is a good time to change the way you do things, to research and plan, or to pick up an idea you've already had and revise or renew it. Its also a good time to do inner work and to let go of what is getting in your way.

How to Be More Focused and Present: Get Grounded!
When I "woke up" and began my healing journey in 1992, I became aware of how completely ungrounded I was. An energy healing practitioner I went to noted that my spirit body was pulled up and above my physical body. I was not "present" in my body from the waist down. This would cause me to feel scattered and "lose time" -- episodes where I had no memory of the previous few minutes because I was not present or conscious. I also felt pain and numbness in my lower body, although I was not fully aware of this until I began working with an energy healing practitioner.
What Causes Ungrounded Energy?
Our physical, spiritual, emotional and mental selves are one. However, past physical or emotional traumas can cause us to live unintegrated, as if our selves are separate. This can cause us to focus on the past and become fearful about the future, which takes us out of the present. Unresolved trauma (which almost everyone has), can also cause us to "self-medicate" our emotional and physical pain into numbness with over-consumption of food, substances, and digital entertainment. Lastly, we live in insulated homes and wear insulated shoes that separate us from the Earth.
The Trend
Lately, almost all my clients have been ungrounded. They are not in their body from the chest down, the waist down, or the knees down. As they have awakened, their focus has become more spiritual and less physical, which pulls them out of their body. They perceive being in their body as heaviness and pain. But not being in the body actually causes pain! The more grounded and present you are in your body, the lighter and more pain-free you will feel.
It is vitally important that as you develop your connection to your spirit self that you concurrently develop your connection to your physical self to maintain balance and presence. This can be done through daily grounding exercises.
How to Get Grounded
Intention: Simply by having the intention of being fully in your body, you become more fully in your body! Intend that your spirit inhabit your body down to the bottoms of your feet, and that your spirit infuse every cell of your body. Take a walk while focusing on the sensation of your feet contacting the ground.Take your shoes off as much as possible and get them on the bare ground.Use the grounding exercises below. Pyramid Technique
Imagine that you are sitting on the ground inside a pyramid. Now imagine that below you under the ground is a mirror image of the pyramid. Deep breathe as you visualize this for at least 10 minutes
Anchoring to the Earth
Close your eyes and focus on your lower dantien. This is a point three finger widths below your navel considered your physical center of gravity. Imagine dropping a column of light from your lower dantien to the center of the earth and anchoring it there. Now visualize a column of light from your lower dantien to your middle dantien at your heart center, located at the center of your upper chest. Lastly, bring the column of light up to your upper dantien, located at your forehead, between the eyebrows. This is also called the third eye and is the center of your intuition.

How to Tell the Difference Between Exercise and Healing Movement
It's no secret that I love to exercise! I've got to bike or swim every day or I don't feel like myself. When I go on vacation (like this week), my first priority is to find a public pool and a bike rental place to work out the kinks and the stress associated with traveling.
The health benefits of exercise like biking, swimming, working out in a gym or taking an organized fitness or exercise class are well-know and manifold. Research indicates exercise can be more effective in treating depression than medication, and can be an excellent treatment for insomnia, weight issues, and insulin resistance.
However, if I'm feeling stuck, disconnected, ungrounded or unbalanced, rather than exercise, I seek out healing movement. Why? Because the repetitive movements that characterize many exercise programs can actually create stagnation by reinforcing held patterns in our bodies, thoughts and beliefs. If you want to break through your patterns you need movement that is intuitive, creative and playful.
When we move and exercise, we aren’t just moving our physical bodies. We are also creating movement in our subtle bodies, the energy structures of our bodies. This raises our vibrational level and balances our energetic and biological rhythms. Movements that emphasize the flow of energy rather than repetitive muscle movement are healing movements.
Here are some examples of healing movement:
Eastern movement arts such as Yoga, T'ai Chi or Qigong emphasize beingrather than doing – a meditative state of mind that requires one to be in the moment. Practicing Eastern movement arts can enhance personal growth by heightening intuition, increasing awareness of energetic movement, building “inner” strength, and balancing energetic flow. Western movement arts such as Pilates or Continuum are educational in nature, increasing body awareness and helping us break free from habitual and limited movement and thinking patterns. Dance Movement Therapy uses movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual - as defined by the American Dance Therapy Association.
You can also utilize healing movement on your own. However, this requires that you:
Trust your intuition in how to move. More about trusting your instincts here. Let go of judgement of how you move, no matter what. Give yourself permission to move any way your body wants to, even if it feels initially awkward. Approach movement as play. More about that here. Try listening to some music with your eyes closed and follow how your body wants to move When I do this, I will get mental images of ways to move. Be willing to go out of your comfort zone. Let go of inhibitions and enjoy! More about that here. How to trust your intuition
We are all intuitive. You are getting intuitive insights all the time. But it can be difficult to recognize the difference between thoughts and intuition. Intuition is:
Wise: Even when your insights suggest you do something that is difficult, it will have a wise quality.Loving: Intuition never criticizes or judges, but is supportive and compassionate. Consistent: Intuitive insights are consistently helpful and reliable.Empowering: Intuitive insights help you believe in yourself. The problem is, usually when we get an intuitive insight, idea or vision, self-doubt quickly comes in and tears it apart. Before you know it, you've come up with a list of reasons why you shouldn't act on it or trust it, and you've dismissed the insight. The way intuition works, you will probably get that insight again when you are in a more receptive state. But there is another way to circumvent the self-doubt issue:
Keep a log of your intuitive insights, ideas and visions. The minute you get one, quickly record it in a file on your PC or the notes section of your phone. You can even utilize the voice recognition ability of your phone, if it has it, to get it recorded before its gone.Review this log once a month. This way even if you dismissed an insight initially, you can come back around to it. Sometimes during this monthly review you will reconnect with the initial insight and be ready to take action on it. But if its part of a long-term goal of yours, it could be a piece of a bigger puzzle and you won't have the full picture for a year or longer.
It's All About Resonance
Sometimes intuitive insights come in the form of a realization that a person, place, project or organization no longer resonates with you. You may no longer feel in sync with it and your intuition is telling you its time to let go. When we trust the timing and move on, we make space for the next step in our life's journey to come in. But it can be difficult to let go, especially if others won't approve and you feel guilty.
Here is an EFT video I made to help you process the guilt for doubting yourself and the guilt for acting on your intuition when it involves ending a relationship, job or endeavor.

How to Heal: The Problem is the Solution!
"The problem that you are trying to get rid of may, in itself, be the pathway to whole person healing." ~ Heidi DuPree from The Other Medicine That Really Works
What if the very thing that you are fighting against in your life was not a wall -- but a doorway? What if you were to go toward your negative emotions - toward your life difficulties - instead of fighting against them? Sounds crazy? Here's the thing -- you can't heal in oppositional energy. Being "anti" keeps the difficulty in place. You can't release fear, anger, sadness, guilt or shame if you are pushing against it. You can't heal anything with opposition. And yet the Western medical system is almost entirely based on opposition! Look at all the medications that are "anti" -- anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-histamine, anti-coagulants....and the list goes on.
If you are like most people, you deal with emotional and physical pain on a daily basis. You likely feel either sad, fear, anger, guilt or shame at some point during the day. You may feel empty and disconnected. You may have repetitive negative thoughts. Your body may feel tight, may ache, and may feel painful. And you likely think these are the problems that you need to get rid of. To feel better you probably engage in one or more of the following behaviors:
Distract yourself with TV or getting on the computerNumb yourself with food, alcohol or other substancesSuppress the pain with a pillStamp out your negative thoughts by immediately switching to positive thoughts
The Real Problem
You may think your problem is the emotional, spiritual, mental or physical pain and that engaging in the above behaviors is the solution, but its the other way around! The problem is engaging in the above behaviors! Why? Because they don't work. They don't get to root of the issue. And these behaviors can actually create disease! Yes, emotional suppression is at the root of almost all disease. Even the conservative Center for Disease Control acknowledges this. And I can tell you from my 20 years of experience in alternative medicine and energy healing, most physical pain is emotional pain expressing physically! So whether you are suppressing, numbing or distracting yourself from emotional pain, spiritual pain, mental pain or physical pain, its all the same - and it all comes from the same source. A wounding.
The Real Solution
You may be wondering how your pain is the solution. Because it is the messenger. Once you stop fighting it, stamping it out, numbing it out and suppressing it, you can receive that message. And the message is simply this: I am hurting. Instead of saying "shut up!" to your pain, ask what will help. The solution is to go toward the hurting with loving, kind attention.
In childbirth, if labor is intentionally stopped, the baby doesn't get born. If you intentionally stop your pain, your rebirth will not happen. Your healing will not happen. Your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental pain is very much like labor pains to birth a happy, healthier self.
Start observing yourself with kindness. This will put you in the higher self position. Do not feel sorry for yourself! That will put you in the position of your lower self!Three times a day, close your eyes and observe.Scan you body head to toe. Where do you hurt? Where do you feel empty? Where do you feel tense? What is your emotional state? Sad? Mad? Fear? Guilt? Apathy?Deep breathe for 10 minutes, imagining that your breath is going to wherever it is needed -- the tense places, the hurting places, the empty places, the sad places, the angry places, the fearful places, the guilty places. If you do this 3 times a day, something amazing will happen. You will go through the doorway and find your wholeness within.
