Day 5 of the 21 Day Challenge

photo (9)Day 5 Complaint Free. How’s it going for you?

I’m in New Hampshire making a short film on how the Complaint Free World program can transform a failing middle school. It’s interesting, the principal had me individually interview her teachers who have the most positive attitudes and the teachers who seem most negative.

Here’s the interesting part: BOTH the upbeat people AND the chronic complainers expressed a belief that THEY ARE POSITIVE people. This was true even with the ones who made the room itself vibrate with negativity.

It shows me that we need to have compassion for negative people. They THINK they are positive; or, at the very least they believe that they are “realistic.” Negative people aren’t “bad” or “wrong,” they’re just asleep.

And, the more people positively awaken around them, the more they will open themselves up to what’s present rather than focusing on what’s absent.

Back on Day 3

day 3 x 7I’m on Day 3.

Saturday, I was working on a project that turned out to be far more difficult than expected. When I thought I had it complete, I went to turn everything on and it didn’t work.

OK, so what did Mr. Complaint Free do? Well, I was tired and frustrated and so I spewed complaints for about thirty seconds. LOL! So, that put me on Day 1 which means I’m now on Day 3.

My mom died a little over 2 years ago and I was looking through her Bible yesterday. I found this from a tattered, old newspaper clipping. I have no idea who wrote it, if you do, please let me know. It’s great advice for life and especially for living a Complaint Free Life:

MATURITY is the ability to control anger and settle differences without violence or destruction.

MATURITY is patience, the willingness to pass up immediate pleasure in favor of long-term gain.

MATURITY is perseverance, the ability to sweat out a project, or a situation In spite of opposition and discouraging setbacks.

MATURITY is unselfishness—responding to the needs of others, often at the expense of one’s own desires or wishes.

MATURITY is the capacity to face unpleasantness and frustration, discomfort and defeat, without complaint or collapse.

MATURITY is humility. It is being big enough to say, “I was wrong.” And, when right, the mature person need not say, “I told you so.”

MATURITY is the ability to make a decision and stand by it. The immature spend their lives exploring endless possibilities, then do nothing.

MATURITY means dependability, keeping one’s word, coming through in a crisis. The immature are masters of the alibi—confused and disorganized. Their lives are broken promises, former friends, unfinished business and good intentions which never materialize.

MATURITY is the art of living in peace with that which we cannot change.

Share this with others and remember that we are aspiring to be a little more mature every day.

Day 5 of the 21 Day Challenge

day 5 x 6

I’m now on Day 5 going 21 days without complaining. Thanks for inspiring me with YOUR daily progress updates!

FACEBOOK’S NEW ALGORITHM IS A GREAT METAPHOR FOR LIFE…

Here’s how it works—let’s say, you LIKE my particular Facebook page and so my updates become part of your newsfeed. BUT, if you don’t occasionally ALSO LIKE my INDIVIDUAL POSTS, my posts will appear less and less until they DISAPPEAR from your newsfeed.

The more posts you LIKE from someone, the more of their posts you see. If you don’t LIKE someone’s posts, they go away.

When it comes to Facebook, the more we LIKE something, the more of it we get to experience. Life is the same way! The more we actively LIKE things in our life—that is, show GRATITUDE, the more we get to experience of them.

Day 4 of the 21 Day Challenge

day 4 x 6

I’m on Day 4 going 21 Days Complaint Free. (‘shot this photo myself ‘cause I’m off on a speaking trip).

I’ve been meditating on how much we allow others to control our lives when we wait for them to do something. I realized that, as long as we wait for anyone to do anything, we are always at their mercy. Rather than waiting, let’s go first.

- The first person to apologize is the first one to be free from the argument

- The first one to smile assures that they are always surrounded by smiles

- The first one to have faith, is the first one to contribute to the situation improving

Who are you waiting on and what are you waiting for them to do?

Better question: How can you go first to make things better?

Day 2 of the 21 Day Challenge

I’m back on Day 2 of 21 days in a row without complaining.

This is my buddy Jake (a.k.a. “Superdude”),

Jake is part lab, part poodle and part romora (those little fish that attach themselves to sharks.) He must be part romora ’cause he’salways attached to my heal. He never leaves my side.

We adopted Jake a year ago and I’ve never heard him complain—not once. In fact, as you can see, he even likes snow.

Jake seems happy no matter what we’re doing. He’s got food, water, squirrels to harass, geese to chase and me to hang out with. He wakes up wagging his tail and never stops all day.

I’m learning from Jake to enjoy the simple things. He loves when we practice laughter yoga.

What’s your companion animal teaching you?

A Complaint Free World

What are the 5 Reasons People Complain?
What’s wrong with complaining?
Isn’t it healthy to get out frustrations through complaining?
How do I get myself and others to stop complaining?

Find the answers to these questions and more in this engaging, informative and often hilarious speech by Will Bowen, internationally bestselling author and Founder of A Complaint Free World.

Here are a few highlights:

“People only complain for one of 5 reasons, and the acronym to remember the 5 reasons is G.R.I.P.E.   The “G” stands for “Get attention…”
“No one every complained their way to health, happiness or success.”
“Complaining is like bad breath, you notice it when it comes out of someoneelse’s mouth, but not when it comes out of your own!”
“You have never complained anyone, including yourself, into positive change.”
“If it were true that people need to complain to release their stress, then the biggest complainers would also be the happiest people.”
“If you have a chronic complainer in your life, simply begin to ask, ‘What’s going well with…(whatever s/he was complaining about.)  Just keep asking, ‘What’s going well?’ and they will either begin to speak positively to you or they will ignore you.  Either way, you win.”
“The way you use the words, “of course” are the best indicator of whether you are a positive or a negative person

Never Mind (InVision Radio)

There is a relentless bully pushing you around and it’s in your own mind.  It says things like, “You’ll NEVER be any good.”  ”You’ll NEVER succeed.”  ”He/She will NEVER love you.” And, things that are even more harsh and critical.

It’s time to take control of this critical inner voice and, through systematic training, push it into the background so your confident inner voice can lead your thinking and guide your life.  It’s time to say “never mind” to your ‘never mind.’

Dr. Lisa Firestone’s work on “Conquering Your Critical Inner Voice” will help you identify and quiet your negative inner chatter.  In an extended interview with Will, Dr. Firestone gives practical tips for silencing that relentless bully so you can see life as the blessed experience it is.

Daniel Nahmod drops by the Namaste’ Lounge to share his music, his muse and his musings about the process of living life while flowing like water.
