Collateral Damage (No, not THAT one) a book review

Okay, let me just make sure you’re not here for the wrong reasons. I am NOT reviewing Collateral Damage, the 2002 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Instead I’ll be reviewing Frederick Lee Brooke’s Collateral Damage, Book #3 of the Annie Ogden Mysteries.

collateral damage

n.

Unintended damage, injuries, or deaths caused by an action, especially unintended civilian casualties caused by a military operation.
(From www.thefreedictionary.com)

I willingly read this book because it was billed as a mystery, ho...

Guest Post by David Litwack: The Virtual World of Gaming and the Plight of War Veterans

Gaming and war would seem to be as far apart from each other as you can get. But while you’re in the midst of them, they share one thing in common—a sense of being in an alternate reality.

I’ve always been fascinated by how much of what we consider to be reality is subjective, how each of us bring our own experiences and biases into play. But when we’re ripped from our normal lives and placed in extreme circumstances, our reality becomes totally fragmented. Such is the case with hospitals and...

Trending

(Or, my life as a curmudgeon.)

I am getting tired of The Great Gatsby. I haven’t watched the movie or read the book, but I can give you lines from the movie, parts of the book and even the ending. Why? Because it’s what’s trending now. It seems I can’t check social media, my e-mail or even random books about writing without getting hit with more Gatsby.

gatsby party

Sure, the remake is by the guy that did Moulin Rouge so it could be good (It could also be the same movie as pointed out HERE). Of course, he a...

The Persnickety Princess: An Excerpt

Lavender hummed a peppy tune while thinking about how she could best put herself into some sort of peril that looked, but wasn’ttoo, dangerous.

At once, she remembered the time last month when the Witch’s cat got itself stuck in a tree. If she could get up a tree, the prince would have no choice but to help her down. What a perfect idea! Trees grew in abundance beside the road. A tallish oak looked particularly promising….

She moseyed up to the tree and eyed it cautiously. What was the best way...

His & Her Review: Twilight 6: Beautiful Creatures, Now With Witches

His & Her Review: Beautiful Creatures

His Perspective

Valentine’s Day. Oh how I’ve despise this supposed holidays for so many years. But for the first time in the better part of a decade, I’m not sitting around watching action movies and complaining about how women don’t know what they want. No this year is a much worse torture.

Beautiful CreaturesSo, this is my wife’s revenge for the Super Bowl. Not only did I have to watch Beautiful Creatures, I had to read the book beforehand. In all fairness, I do read fast, s...

His & Her Review: The Night the Lights Went Out in New Orleans, A Super Bowl Story

His & Her Review: The Super Bowl

His Perspective

One thing I should start off by saying, I am ruled by my nostalgia. So when my wife and I had to review the Super Bowl for our His & Her series, I didn’t have to think that hard about what team I was going to root for.

MontanaI was born in Alaska, which has no NFL team, no NBA team, not even an NHL team. Most of the adults I knew at the time would cheer on either the 49ers (more often) or the Seahawks (if they had lived in Seattle). At the time, I didn’t...

Say No to Bromance

This week’s rant is brought to you by THIS POST.Something about trying to review a “bromance” led to this particular rant. Enjoy.

I first have to start off by saying, I hate—HATE the term “bromance.” What ever happened to hanging out with the guys or just chillin? These days it seems like anytime two or more guys hang out it’s a “bromance.”

Seriously women, knock that shit off. When you migrate in herds to the bathroom or go out for “girl’s night” do we call it “womance?” According to Urban Dic...

His & Her Review: I Love You, Man – An Attempt At Neutrality

His & Her Review: I Love You, Man

His Perspective:

This week was supposed to be my week for guy stuff, but since Super Sunday is fast approaching, we figured we would compromise this week. After all, Em has no idea just how much football she is going to be subjected to for the Super Bowl since she has never seen a game. At one point she even suggested that we “watch an episode of football” for these reviews.

ilymBut that is next week, this week is I Love You, Man. Comedy mixed with “bromance.” My ra...

His & Her Review: Why do I have to watch The Notebook?

His & Her Reviews: The Notebook

His Perspective:

The Notebook… Not as much fun as Blue’s Clues.

Well, my wife has escalated the battle of the gender stereotypes with The Notebook. Well, let’s not mince words, let’s just get to the review.

ThinkingchairSo, first things first, I brought my Notebook, just in case this has audience participation like in Blue’s Clues. I feel I’m probably not going to have to use too much of my brain here, so let’s find out what Blue wants to do today.

Hmm. There’s a guy in a kayak...

Persnickety Princess, the Journey

I used to have a Blogger account. I’ve always like the idea of blogging or even vlogging, but I never really kept up with it. I only ever put out four posts on that Blogger account, but one, dated January 18th, 2011, was of note to me:

“The Persnickety Problem with Picky Princesses

So a few days ago, a coworker and I ended up talking about princesses. I’m not quite sure how, but it was an interesting conversation. And in the midst of that conversation, she brought up wanting to write a gothic p...
