I first wrote short stories in my early twenties, and although I've long since lost them, I can still recall most of the details as if I'd done them yesterday - in fact, a few ideas I had back then surface in my first book, Sky.

Away from writing, I run at least five times a week (usually with my dog), and will often amuse myself with ideas for stories. If that doesn't work I set up a conversation between my main characters and see where that takes me :0)(less)

I love the planning stage when I come up with all sorts of plots, characters and twists. I also love the solitude that it can bring when it's just me. my iPod and my laptop. But the best feeling is when you hit return at the very end and feel an immense sense of satisfaction of stringing together 80,000 plus words in an order that hopefully makes a good read.(less)

in tolkien's footsteps (I wish...)

As a teenager, I used to wander through nearby fields and woodlands, imagining scenes from Tolkiens' Lord of the Rings. It wasn't until I was in my 30s that I discovered the great man spent his formative years just three miles from where I was brought up.

My first job at 16 in Shirley, Birmingham (not Shirely!) was less than a mile from his childhood home in Sarehole Mill. In my lunch break, I woul Read more of this blog post »
