Book Review: Equestrian Mystery Book for All Ages

Hello, my human friend!
Quicksand - The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo (The Adventures of Dakotaroo) Thanks to Cool Mom for providing us with another guest book review post.

~Katrina von Cat the Master of Wisdom and Knowledge (and Stanley)

Title: Quicksand - The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo

Series: The Adventures of Dakotaroo

Author :  Krista Michelle Breen

Publisher: Groundskeeper's Cottage Press

Year Published: 2012Description (from Amazon): The first in Krista Michelle Breen's bestselling Canadian series, T.J. Thompson's world gets thrown upside down when her beloved Appaloosa Dakotaroo mysteriously disappears into the fog.

Review: Quicksand: The Mysterious Disappearance of Dakotaroo is a fun and easy read. Horse lovers will fall in love with this series. Those of you unfamiliar with the equestrian terms used throughout the story, this book will give you a great jumping off point for learning about the life of an equestrian. For me, it brought me back to my teenage years of horseback riding.

T.J. and her horse, Dakotaroo (Roo), have a touchingly close bond. When Roo disappears one  foggy morning, T. J. is forced to face the fact that her horse has been stolen.

Just when you think the story is about to wrap up, a whole new adventure begins! When T.J. eventually finds Dakotaroo, she begins to wonder if bringing her stolen horse home right away is the best course of action. What? Is she crazy? Maybe not. Mickey Skyhouse, a boy with a sad back story changes T.J.'s tune a bit. Yep, just a teeny tiny hint of romance, nothing more.

T.J., her best friend Arienne and Mickey prove to be a productive team in the end.

I happily give this book five stars out of five.

On a non-book note, I adore Krista's blog. Just take a look at 25 Nerdy Things About Krista and  Dead Dog Township(It's Kinda Famous). Fun information!

Clean Read? Yes.

Ages? 8+ independently. Younger ages may enjoy being read this story.

The Reviewer: Hi! I am a homeschooling mother to one precocious tween daughter. Most of my reading consists of preparatory reading for upcoming history, math, science, geography, literature, (you get the idea) lessons. However, sometimes I am lucky enough to fit in a book just for fun and will review these "fun" books for my dear friends, Stanley and Katrina von Cat the Master of Wisdom and Knowledge. You may call me Neighbor Girl's Mom or Cool Mom.

Title: Escape from the Forbidden Planet

Author :  Julie Anne Grasso

Illustrator: David Blackwell

Year Published: 2012Description (from Amazon): Caramel Cinnamon thought the worst day of her life was the day her grandparents, the King and Queen of the Elves of Cardamom went missing. She was wrong! The day she spills sticky toffee syrup onto her father's computer, that's when her worst nightmare begins. She finds herself marooned on a forbidden planet, sent there by an evil clone with a very sticky secret. Caramel is desperate to escape. If she doesn't she will lose her dreams of returning to Cardamom to become a healer like her Mum. Luckily, she has a secret of her own and the lives of her family and friends depend on it!

Suitable for children aged 9-12

Review: An accident as a child leaves Caramel Cinnamon, of the planet Cardamom, with a bad leg that continually chips away her confidence. Caramel is forced into an adventure that takes her to a forbidden planet. We cheer for her as her confidence builds while she and her new friends find a way to assist Caramel's family - and the Universe.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a super fun read and even more importantly (as a mother) a clean read. I admit it took me a few chapters to become familiar enough with the science fiction/fantasy lingo to follow it easily but once I had that in my head, the book had my interest and it never lost it. Escape from the Forbidden Planet is truly an entertaining book.

Caramel is a lovely character who discovers amazing qualities in herself. Learning to trust them is her biggest challenge and when she does, really cool things happen. I found myself chuckling at Alexander222 and his helper "Lex" as Alexander worked to gain the attention of the Clone Council to make himself known on his planet, Ishqwartz.
I give Escape from the Forbidden Planet  four stars out of five. It is a great read; extremely creative and leaves you hungry for both food and more of Julie Grasso's story.

I purchased this as an e-book but may have to buy the print version for our home shelves - I am still partial to print books.
Overall, nicely done Julie for creating a fun and creative book that I have no doubts my 9 year-old precocious daughter will enjoy AND that I will give to her without hesitation to read.
Clean Read? Yes.

Ages: The Amazon description states "Suitable for children aged 9-12." I would venture to guess that younger children would enjoy having this book read to them.
