A Writer's Life For Me
Hello everyone, I am so excited about today's post. I am participating in something circling around with writers in the social media community. Writer's are tagging each other on social media to answer the questions below, for the community to get to know us a little better. Kristen Martin, a fellow writer was tagged, and in her vlog, she tagged all of us writers. So I thought it sounded like something fun I could share with you, my beautiful audience. So without further ado here we go, enjoy!
1. What kind of writer are you?
This one is a little hard for me to define. My first novel More Than Words Can Say is a young adult. While my second novel, Falling For You is contemporary fiction. However, I’m leaning more toward contemporary fiction.
2. When did you start writing and what made you want to try it?
I started writing in 2009. One day while reading Twilight, it hit me. I was reading in my car during lunch when I had a random thought: I think I can do this. That night I started putting my thoughts together, and shortly after ,I started writing my book (More Than Words Can Say). It took no time at all to see that writing had always been something I wanted to do. Time and again, I found evidence that throughout my life I had come up with countless book ideas. Only difference this time was, I actually took action.
3. What inspires your stories?
There isn’t one particular place that my stories come from. I could be inspired by a song, a movie, a person, conversation, the weather. Inspiration is everywhere for me.
4. What themes do you explore in your writing?
I explore relationships. I am a fan of romantic comedy films and I love to write similar themes, only without the comedy—I’m not funny, unfortunately.
5. Are you a plotter, pantser, planters?
I started out as a pantser, but now that I’ve learned so much about writing, (7 weeks from getting my Bachelor’s degree in English with a creative writing track) I am a plotter. I can’t believe I wrote an entire novel by the seat of my pants.
6. Where are you in your writing journey?
I have self-published two novels. My novel Falling For You, got really close to getting representation, but it didn’t work out in the end. I’m in the process of writing my third novel, Between Us.
7. Have you entered any writing contests? Did you win any?
No, I haven’t. But I’m starting to look into some contests now.
8. Who are your writing heroes?
I’m a huge fan of Jojo Moyes and Emily Giffin, they are contemporary fiction authors and Marissa Meyer, who is a young adult author.
9. Have you been to a writing conference?
No, but there are two happening in Orlando, FL in September and I plan on attending at least one of them. Can’t wait. I will keep all of you posted on how I prepare for this event.
10. What are your top 3 writing tips
Plot your novel.
Have your novel professionally edited.
When you’re ready to publish your novel (if you’re self-published) hire professionals to do the work for you. Hire someone to design your book cover and to format your book—both e-book and print.
Hope you enjoyed and that you learned a little more about me. Now it's my turn to tag someone, I am tagging all you writers! Go on, write your blog or record your vlog answering the above question, can't wait to learn more about each and everyone of you. Remember to swing by Kristen Martin's YouTube channel to learn more about her life as writer.

5 Books That Will Transform Your Life
So today I am going to talk about two of my favorite things, books and inspiration. I have found that on days when I’m not feeling inspired or motivated to go after my dreams, all I have to do is read a good book. Or in my case, most of the time, “listen” to a book through audible.com. I have a long commute to work, so I take advantage of that time to get my mind in the right place.
It was tough narrowing the list to just five, but I managed. In no particular order, the following are some of the books I’ve “read” that have transformed my life in one way or another. Here we go.
1. You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jane Sincero’s. I’ve listened to this book three times and each time I’m reminded that I shouldn’t be afraid to go for what I want. Sincero delivers her message in a fun and entertaining way. Her down-to-earth, humorous delivery gets you hooked immediately. Forever, I will return to this book as a form of inspiration.
2. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. If you don’t know who she is, she is the author of Eat, Pray, Love. Gilbert’s delivery is very different than Sincero’s. If I had to sum up this book in one word I would call it passion. In this book, you are reminded to get back to your passion. Forget about the money, the stress or whatever else keeps you up night. I’ve listened to this one twice. She is a wonderful writer with a very important message. Be creative, yes, but always do it with love.
3. Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes. If you don’t know who she is, she is the writer and creator of TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder to name a few. This book is wonderful in that it reminds you about the power of yes. Often we get stuck in a rut, in our mundane routines, which often makes us feel like we’re idled. In this book, Rhimes shows you her one year transformation, simply by her decision to say yes to everything. This book serves as a reminder for you to say yes to life.
4. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. Of course this list would not be complete if I didn’t include this book, this book that changed my life! I can’t remember how many times I’ve listened to this book, probably more than ten. This book is a perfect place to start if you’re new to The Law of Attraction. But in my opinion, this book is far more than that though. It will help you understand that you are the creator of your life, that you are in control, and that life is not happening to you, but happening for you. If you haven’t read it/listened to it, you must!
5. E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality by Pam Grout. I’ve listened to this book like three times (when I like a book I like a book, what can I say!). This book is a fun read. Grout’s writing style is similar to Sincero’s. She is funny and entertaining, and gets right to the point. The experiments in the book are fun and easy to do. At every step you are proving to yourself that you do, in fact, create your reality.
So there you have it, my five must-reads that will inspire you and motivate you to create the life that you desire. I would love to hear from you, so comment below with books that have rocked your world.
As a side note, in case you didn’t know, I am also the author of two fiction novels: More Than Words Can Say and Falling For You. You can visit the “book” tab for more information or visit Amazon, they are both available on paperback and kindle!

Writer Tips: 3 Tips on How to Stay on Track While Living and Writing
Welcome friends, today I want to give you three helpful tips on how to stay on track with your writing project. If you’re not a writer, it’s okay. These tips can apply to you too, just apply them where ever you can in your life.
Let’s face it, we are all busy. I know that I for one always feel like I have a million things I need to do, which often makes me feel stressed. I used to be the type that could keep my “to-do” list in my head, and not miss a beat. This, is no longer the case. I simply have too much to do. For this reason, I've had to reassess the way I do things. After all, I want to enjoy my writing experience, from writing—to publishing—to promoting. I thought, hmm, maybe I'm not alone here. Maybe others are stressing out over the many things they have to do too. For this reason I compiled the 3 most important tips I've put into action that has helped me become sane again.
List Anyone?
This one, I think is pretty obvious, but for some reason one that hadn't occurred to me until recently. Creating a to-do list simplifies your life and highlights what truly needs to be done. I suggest you start with making a monthly goal, or to-do list. Then, make a weekly goal. Then, a daily goal. It is very important that when creating your to-do list, you set realistic goals. For example, if you want to finish editing your novel, and you’re on chapter 2, is it realistic to say you will be done in one week? Probably not. If you’re not honest with what you can accomplish, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Better to say, I’ll edit one chapter a day and accomplish it, than say I will edit 5 chapters a day and not get any of it done because you were overwhelmed by the thought of having to edit 5 CHAPTERS!
You Have Tomorrow!
Now, I'm not talking about procrastination here. I'm talking about giving yourself some wiggle room. Don't feel bad about saying, "there’s always tomorrow," especially when you are doing your best to keep up. When jotting down all the things you MUST do, be careful with thinking it all has to be done today! For instance, I have a lot of professional things on my plate: from work, to writing, to school to editing and promotions, and I sometimes get overwhelmed by thinking it all has to be done today. On most days, I cannot do all the things I want to do, at least not successfully. I've learned to manage my schedule by realizing that some things can wait until tomorrow. So if I've set a strict schedule on myself that I says I have to edit two chapters a day, maybe I cut back to one chapter.
Be Kind To Yourself:
Don't give up! Being a writer doesn’t have to feel like a heavy burden filled with to-do's. Be kind to yourself. If you’ve set goals for yourself, but you find that you're unable to reach them, then reassess. Maybe you’ve packed too much on your plate. Be lenient! After all, it’s your list. Add, delete, and/or extend as needed. There’s no hurry. Really, there isn’t.
There you have it, these tips have worked for me. And although on most days I don't check everything off my list, I'm learning how to be kind to myself about it. I take stock of what worked the previous week, and what didn't and I try it again, tweaking here and there where ever necessary.
In case you didn't know my two fiction novels: More Than Words Can Say and Falling For You are now available through Amazon, on paperback and kindle!

How to Transform Your Life Moment by Moment
“It’s not that easy, it’s really hard,” someone said this to me recently in regards to a change they desperately needed to make. I responded by saying, “And living like this is not hard?”
Have you ever wanted—needed something so badly that it hurt? Have you ever felt stuck by thinking it was just too hard and you didn’t know how you would ever get there? If you haven’t, you’re lucky. But for those of you who have been there, I’m offering these words in hopes that it strikes a chord and you take immediate action.
To the person that told me the above statement, I finished by asking them to make a choice. I could see how difficult it was for them to continue living the way they were. It was ‘HARD’ for them to go on this way. So, I asked this, which ‘hard’ do you want to live with?
As an example, let us say that you hate your job and you want to quit. That every morning you feel terrible, perhaps even shed tears as you make your one hour commute. One might say to you, then just quit, get another job. You might suggest, it’s not that easy. It’s hard to look for another job, one that offers the same benefits as what I have now. In this case (and in all cases) you are making a choice. You are choosing which “hard” you want to live with.
For further clarification, let me provide another example. Let us say you want to get in shape, lose a few pounds because you are extremely unhappy with your current image. You’re so unhappy that you are unkind to yourself, you are miserable and you often cry yourself to sleep. Changing your lifestyle, eating healthy and exercising regularly may seem hard to you. From this point of view, both are hard: feeling sad about yourself and changing your entire lifestyle. So, if they are both hard, then why not go for the one that that is actually moving you in the direction of happiness.
Your life can be transformed by the choices you make moment by moment. Everything in life is about choices. At any given moment, we are deciding on something, to sit on the couch and watch T.V. or to update and send out that resume. To binge watch something on Netflix, or to go for a one hour walk.
I am in total agreement that transformation is often hard, but I also know that living unhappily, without actively pursuing that change you desire is much much harder. So don't wait another day. Actively pursue your highest joy, moment by moment.
As a side note, in case you didn’t know, I am also the author of two fiction novels: More Than Words Can Say and Falling For You. You can visit the “book” tab for more information or visit Amazon, they are both available on paperback and kindle!

Book Launch: Five Important Things to Remember when Launching a Book
It’s early still, but I am already feeling the effects of launching a new book. No, I don’t mean sales. I mean physically feeling the effects. I literally drove myself right onto Sick Street.
For this reason, I’ve compiled a list of five important things to remember when launching a book, especially for you self-published/indie-published peeps.
IT WILL ALL BE OKAY:
No matter what happens with the launch of your book, whether you sell a million copies or one, it will be okay. The world will still go on, and you my friend will too. Though some may lead you to believe that it’s all about the launching, I believe that time is your best friend. Give the book time to get out there, for people to read it and enjoy it.
DON’T LOSE SIGHT:
This ties in to the one above. Don’t get obsessed with checking the sales, the reviews, the ranking! Remember why you wrote the book in the first place: for people to enjoy. Promote your book for love, not for sales. Go back to the moment when you wrote the book, when you read your own words. When you created, then, fell in love with the characters. When you cried that first tear. When you laughed aloud. When you got mad at your character. When you rolled your eyes because you wrote such an awesome cheese-ball of a love scene, but you kept it anyway! Don’t lose sight of your story. It’s not about the sale; it’s about sharing your story with the world.
PUT THE PHONE DOWN:
The reason I got sick (with a cold) was because I didn’t take time to relax, by the time I realized I wasn’t feeling well, it was too late. But aside from the illness, I was seriously starting to get concerned; I had become addicted to my phone. I would constantly check my stats, making adjustments here and there, whenever needed. Posting, adding, editing, deleting, researching, check twitter, check Facebook, check Instagram, check amazon, check kindle, check website, put phone down: REPEAT. It was madness. I recommend that you do what you must, then walk away.
SET A SCHEDULE:
After realizing something had to give, I discovered something that helped me become sane again: Making a To-Do-List. Who would’ve thunk! Writing things down, from homework to marketing to exercising allowed for better flowing days. As I was making my list for each day, I would realize I was putting on too many things in one day, so I would cut back and add it to a lighter day, one with less things due. An added bonus to creating a to-do-list is the amazing satisfaction you get at the end of the day when you get to check that thing off your list.
CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU LOVE:
Don’t stop doing the thing that you love most, writing! If you’re anything like me, you pretty much do it all, meaning you get the book ready for Print and eBook—formatting, uploading, promotion, blah blah blah….. This can take up a lot of your time. I for one, have a full time job, I am going to school taking four classes (all which require a ton of work) and I blog twice a week and therefore I’m left with hardly any free time at all. So in the process of getting a book launched, I stopped doing the thing I enjoy most: writing. Don’t let this happen to you. Write every day, it’s the one thing you should not skip. If you have to skip on one of your daily Instagram posts then do so, but don’t stop writing. Your future self will thank you for that!
So there you have it. I hope this was helpful to you, and served as a reminder of what (or not) to do when you’re in the process of launching your own book. If you have any questions, or would like to talk about being an indie published author in today’s world, I would love to hear from you. You can leave a comment here, or email me at mari@marisuggs.com or lets chat through FaceBook, Instagram or Twitter.
Oh, in case you don’t know, my books More Than Words Can Say and Falling For you are available through Amazon.
Till next time, Happy Writing!

7 Songs to Give Yourself a Little Love & Inspiration Each Day
So, if you’re anything like me, you’ve pretty much stopped listening to radio. It’s not that I have anything against radio, it’s just that these days I’m in the business of picking out my own songs. Especially because most days I’m looking for something specific in my listening experience. Some days, I’m looking for inspiration for my writing, and other days, I need a little pick me up to tackle my work week. For this reason, I’ve created a play list of motivational songs. I want to share with you my top 7 go-to-songs that get me excited to take on the world.
1. Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.” I know you’re probably thinking this song is way played out. I understand, but the song, the lyrics, still do something to me. Especially this line “And I don't really care if nobody else believes 'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me.” I mean haven’t you been there? Surrounded by naysayers? For this reason, I have this song on my list. To remind me that it’s never too late.
2. One Republic’s “I lived.” My favorite line, “Hope that you spend your days, but they all add up.” This line reminds me to take risks. I always need a reminder.
3. The Script’s “Hall of a Fame.” Yeah, when this song came out, it was my ring tone. Favorite line “Be believers, be leaders, Be astronauts, Be champions, Be truth seeker.” I love this line because it’s telling us to be whatever we want. Just Believe!
4. American Author’s “Best Day of My Life.” Why? Because this song is AWESOME! I mean please go listen, you can’t help but get ready for life with this song. “This is gonna be the best day of my life.” This is my favorite line because it reminds me of how I should feel about every single day.
5. Sia’s “Unstoppable.” I love anything by Sia, but this one really gets be going, my favorite line “I'm unstoppable I'm a Porsche with no brakes.” I mostly like this line because it was so creatively written.
6. Justin Timberlake’s “I Can’t Stop the Feeling.” This is song is bouncy, lovely, happy and I just love everything about it. Favorite line, “I got this feeling inside my bones.” This is how the song opens and it instantly gets me in a good mood. Try listening to it every morning while you’re getting ready for work.
7. Katy Perry’s “Rise.” Oh my God you guys, this song is everything! My favorite lines, “Oh, ye of so little faith Don't doubt it, don't doubt it Victory is in my veins I know it, I know it.” I feel so strong and ready after listening to this song that I can’t help but be super productive right afterwards.
There you have it. I hope you take some time to listen to these songs so that each day you start your day with a little love and inspiration. Or, I hope I’ve inspired you to create your own kick-ass motivation playlist.
Pssss. By the way. Today only, my novel Falling For You is Free through Kindle. Hurry. Go get your copy. And after reading it, if you’re so inclined to leave a review on Amazon and Goodreads I would be most grateful! Lots of Love this Valentine’s day.

The One Mantra I Repeated To Reach Every Single Goal- From Travel to Earning Money
In the last week I was struck with the realization that my hard work is finally paying off. For the last 4 ½ years, I’ve been so busy learning, making goals, setting plans and putting them into action that I’ve had little to time to see what was sprouting before me.
Prior to learning about the law of attraction, and understanding that I have control of my life and that every desire I have inside me is possible, I was living on auto pilot. I was letting life “happen to me” instead of me guiding it where I wanted it to go. That life, included many fears. Fears of things I wanted but was too afraid to try, or sometimes afraid of wanting them. For example, what if I write a novel, then I’ll have to present it to the world. Or, I want to travel the world, but I’m “claustrophobic” I’ll never be able to be on a plane. Or, I would love to go back to school, but….the list went on and on.
Since discovering the law of attraction and taking my life in my own hands, I’ve managed to accomplish so many things in just 4 short years. For instance:
I’ve gone back to school, and now, I’m two months away from getting my Bachelor’s Degree in English—creative writing.
I’ve traveled domestically, and I’m currently planning my international trip (stay tuned for this amazing journey).
I’ve published two novels and I’ve been published by another publication other than my own website. And the one thing I thought was going to take forever, and oftentimes got sucked into thinking that I was “wishful thinking,” is that I am actually making money with my writing!!!
These are just some of my professional goals that I’ve been working on that have come to be. And all this has come true because above all, I've had one steady mantra flowing through me: BELIEVE! Believe that all is possible.
Today, February 7, 2017 I released my second novel Falling For You and I’ve checked off that amazing feat from my bucket list and I’m on my way to sharing it with the world.
This day and always I want you to remember that you can’t have it all, but you can have all that your heart desires. And I want you to have all that your heart desires. With this blog and my previous blog (blogspot), I’ve shared countless tips on how you can get what you want too. If you are tired of the way things are. If you are tired of the rat-race. If you are tired of living the life you are living? If you feel stuck? Or, if you only have one goal you want to reach, then continue on this journey with me.
Just like I’ve done for the last 4 years, through this medium I will continue to share my journey, offering helpful tips along the way in hopes that it will help you as much as it has me.
If you haven’t done so already, follow me on Twitter and Instagram and like my Facebook page. Through my social sites I share daily inspiration and motivation of all kinds—like fitness, wellness, health and positive thinking.

A Fresh Way to Think About Food and Eating
As I continue on my health and wellness journey, I’m learning a very valuable lesson when it comes to food and counting calories: It’s more important WHAT you put in your body than HOW MUCH you put in your body (calorie counting). Meaning, if I wake up and want to eat three mangos, then the calories here are less important than if I decide to have two eggs, hash browns and bacon.
As I get older (and wiser I like to think) I’m caring more and more about what I put in my body. I want my body to function at its best. I want it to be around for a long time. But I want it to be around healthy. That said, since I started my journey my diet has changed. As I learn, I make adjustments. For example, these days I’m mostly concerned with eating as much whole foods as possible. So my grocery lists consists of mostly of organic and non-gmo items. I want my food to be raw, as close to its natural state as possible.
That said, I'm not perfect, and I sometimes indulge in things I shouldn't--though not nearly as often--I'm getting better at making better choices. The cool thing about going on this journey is that I’m learning about things I had previously been oblivious to. For example, for a large portion of my life I was a habitual McDonald-fry-eating crazy person. Truth be told, it was during one my McDonalds dinners that my transformation began. I was eating a McChicken, fries and coke—the usual—when I suddenly found it difficult to swallow. I would take a bite, then a sip of coke and there was a battle taking place in my throat. As I desperately tried pushing the food down, the carbonation from the coke kept it from happening, instead it kept rising back up with every bite. That night, was the last night I ever drank soda again—it has since been 4 ½ years. Still though, I continued eating McDonalds—and feeling sick all the while. I’m glad for it because it was the McDonalds experience that brought me to the health journey I am on today. This drove me to learn about food, and how far away I was from eating food in its natural state--food that was without being genetically modified.
Well, in the last few years we’ve learned there is a lot more than potato in their French fries, haven’t we. Any one of those genetically modified ingredients could’ve contributed to my feeling so sick after and while eating their fries.
The reason for this post is to simply offer another perspective when it comes to food and counting calories. Though I don’t personally struggle with overeating, I have struggled with eating foods that nourish my body. Caring about my body and the foods I put in it has opened up a world of health and fitness for me. Simply by caring about what goes into my body helps me make better choices. So much so, that I now prefer eating at home to eating out. I like to know what’s in my food, and the best way to do that, I’ve learned, is to prepare our meals ourselves.
So the next time you find yourself a bit frustrated with your diet—or lack thereof—come at it from a new perspective. Instead of wanting to lose weight, or cutting this and that out, think about nourishing your body. What does it need to function at its highest peak, for years to come? You know the answer, now you just have to follow through.
As always, I would love to hear from you, so leave a comment below letting me know your heath journey. And for more helpful health and wellness moments, like my Facebook page, follow me on twitter and Instagram.
Till next time.

5 Things Stopping You from Being Successful
Though we differ in many ways, and there are many reasons why we have yet to reach success—as defined respectively, the fact remains that most of us suffer from these five life-blocking sentiments:We’re afraid we’re not talented enough We have fear of rejectionWe’re afraid it’s already been doneWhat we desire is not important enough to make a change in other people’s lifeWe’re afraid we don’t have the right degree or training
On some level we all do this; we all build our lives around the things we believe most about ourselves and the world. There's a saying that goes like this, “argue for your limitations, and you get to keep them.” Keeping this quote in mind, is this the kind of life you want to build? A life built around fears and limitations? Or do you want to build your world around knowing that anything is possible. That nothing can or should stop you because others that have come before you have done “it!”
This is what happens when we allow this type of thinking to control our lives: Because we think we’re not talented enough, we never try anything new. Because we have fear of rejection, we don’t put ourselves out there. Because it’s already been done, we keep our inventions tucked away at the bottom of the drawer, or worse, in the corner of our minds until it disappears completely. Because what we have to offer is not that important,—like say, savings lives, we don’t share what could possibly save someone’s life—like a song, a story, a favorite recipe, a dance that moves someone and awakens their souls. Because we don’t have the right degree, we don’t apply for that job, or reach for that goal because, well, there’s no point really…. I suggest this, any time any of the above limited beliefs creep into your thought life challenge it by asking yourself this: What will I build my next hour around, fear or bravery? By bringing to the surface that you’re about to step on that fear track, it will shake you--alert that you’re about to play small. Never again allow fear to be the place from which your life is built. Instead be brave, take chances and live fully.
