The last stop on my blog tour for Changing Loyalties was over at LGBTQReads blog and had a never before excerpt from the novel: https://lgbtqreads.com/

Excited to have Nicole Field on the blog today, with an excerpt from her brand-new paranormal romance, Changing Loyalties, which kicks off the Shadows of Melbourne series and just happens to feature a beautifully named main character

Pastel goth lesbian au Hades and Persephone

Inspiration, for if I ever actually do get around to writing a lesbian Hades/Persephone story.

Welcome to my I’m excited for Confest!!1! picture post. In it,...

Welcome to my I’m excited for Confest!!1! picture post. In it, expect to see much flailing around from the day before I leave for Confest 2017.

Last night, I decided that I wanted to find a particular hair clip to take with me, cause my hair has been cut short enough that it’ll actually take. Think I could find it last night? Nope. But I did find it this morning, which is much better than coming home from Confest next week and finding it then.

I was writing lists for things we still need to buy, and groceries to take with us at the time. This then seemed like a really great time to decide to colour my hair. Don’t even ask me why this was a good idea in preparation for Confest. I don’t even know.

I finally got back to my lists. Of course, rather than wait till this afternoon or evening to go get the groceries, I had to do it RIGHT THEN cause the sandwiches needed to be made and wrapped, and the hot cross buns had to be buttered and put in foil for campfires in the early morning.

Somewhere in the middle of that, I was in a conversation discussing pinterest lanterns with battery operated fairy lights. I mean, I have a perfectly reliable torch that I can use for light at night, but it’s the aesthetic!! Also, I feel like a LotR elf for bringing this with me. Oh dear.

Several hours later, finally, I have my clip, flower crown (that was the first thing I ever bought at my first ever Confest) )and purple tinged hair because I don’t go in for that bleaching stuff. Sandwiches are made and packed and the rest of the cured meet is out of reach of our cats who grew very curious midway through my kitchen ventures.

For now, at least, the anxious-excitement of getting ready has stalled.

April Update

I’ve been busy this year. This year? Is it 4 months into this year already? I’ve been making monthly updates on here for the last year, except for this one apparently. There’s a pretty good reason for that: I have a bunch of different places that I update stuff and I forgot about here.

To fix this problem, I decided to start a newsletter. (And then spent all of today fixing it up oh god.)

Fairytales Slashed 7 is my second release of this year, and it’s almost a month old. Well, I say release, but I have one short story in it. Anyway, to celebrate the release of ‘After Ever After’, the first of my three f/f releases this year, as well as the beginnings of my new newsletter, I’d like to celebrate short free read that first appeared several years ago in the Queermance Vol. 2 anthology. This is a f/f magical realism short with bisexual and disabled protagonists.

After an accident leaves Elizabeth in a wheelchair, it’s up to Lily to teach her how to fly again.

concept: casual lgbt+ representation

lycisce:

a man taking off his shirt to reveal a binder underneath. he settles down, has a beer, watches tv. no tragic backstory about his transition, no negativity. just a trans dude being a trans dude.

a businesswoman talking on her cellphone while she stops by the pharmacy to pick up her estrogen.

people asking for pronouns without a second thought, using they/them even when the person isn’t in the room.

a woman getting hit on at a club, getting respectful responses when she says she’s ace.

two men holding hands, three women in a healthy polyamorous relationship. a pan man living with his nonbinary datefriend.

romcoms, sitcoms, slice-of-life stories.

not everyone is cishet; media should represent that.

What does it feel like to squish on someone? I've heard that when you have a crush on someone, you'll feel "achy"; when you are with a person you have a crush on, you feel all your attention being sucked towards them; you prefer to interact with a person

To me, a crush is a desire to have a romantic relationship with someone, or to at least to fantasize about doing such. You might fantasize about taking them on dates, holding their hand, kissing them, etc. Not to say that the desire to perform these actions isn’t sometimes present in squishes, but it’s definitely more present in a crush.

In my experience, a squish is more like “wow! That person’s really cool! I wanna be their friend/BFF/QPP!”. You might fantasize more about, say, watching movies with them, or talking with them about a subject you both really like, or things that generally are more associated with friendship than with romance. The farthest I’ve ever gone with a squish is the desire to hold hands and to maybe live together in a platonic roommate situation.

I wouldn’t say that things like jealousy, an achy feeling, or wanting to impress someone are necessarily crush-exclusive. I’ve definitely felt all of those when I’ve had squishes in the past; it’s just that the context is different. I might be jealous over say, seeing someone I have a squish on hang out with their best friend, rather than seeing them with a romantic partner.

And honestly, just like crushes, squishes can range anywhere from “I think you’re cool and wanna hang out!” up to “PLEASE BE MY BEST FRIEND OMG I LOVE YOU”. It’s just that the relationship desired, and the actions desired, are different.

“And I’d realized– I realized how badly I’d been treated before, if my standards had become so low. If the freedom I’d been granted felt like a privilege and not an inherent right.”

s-t-a-r-f-o-x:
a very informational flowchart

So I saw this...

s-t-a-r-f-o-x:

a very informational flowchart

So I saw this flowchart several days ago, and the song’s been in my head like a freaking earworm ever since.

The thing about earworms, at least for me, is that they also bring you back to the first time you heard this song.

For me, it was when I was in the passenger seat of my mum’s car. I’m singing along to it, and I’m singing something like this,

Hanging out the passenger side

Of his best friend’s ride

Tryin’ to say hello to me.

Yeah. Because I didn’t know what ‘hola’ was. According to my preteen understanding, it was a way to say ‘hello’ in an American accent, so I just corrected it to the way I would say it in an Australian accent whenever I sang along.

What stuck with me, despite the catchy tune, was why these women were being so mean to guys. I mean, why do you have to say ‘No’ so many times when the boy was just trying to say hello?

I mean, surely the girl was being needlessly rude. Cause why would you need to say ‘No’ four times?

I’d never met a ‘scrub’ before then. I didn’t have any practical idea of what a ‘scrub’ might be before, so again it was a case of me filing that away as American lingo and, from the context of the song, went with ‘a guy that you didn’t want to have a relationship with’.

Again, cue confusion on my part, because if you weren’t interested in a relationship with them, why would they still try to pursue you?

What’s interesting to me now is how accurate I’ve since come to recognise this song being now seeing it for the first time in more than 20 years. The process of nodding along and agreeing with these lyrics not because I heard it at such a young age, but because of what life experience has taught me.
