5 Works That Are Shamefully Under-appreciated

Sometimes, I agonize over what I’m going to blog about. I mean I’ve been on a roll talking about various aspects of the act of creation, what works, what doesn’t and occasionally launching series and taking forever to follow up . But then I wise up and remember that if you’re reading my blog, you’re actually interested (for reasons I cannot fathom) in my thoughts about things outside of nuts and bolts writing stuff.

And also, it is my blog and I really can talk about whatever I feel like here a...

The Spider’s Seven #18 – The Others

Arbil

The room had been locked, and no one at the front desk had mentioned anyone having come to call on him. All the same, Anansi didn’t bat an eye upon seeing her in his room, staring out the window with a glass of white wine in her hand.

She was of average height and build though her arms and legs were toned from climbing around digs all day. Her skin was sun-kissed naturally and darker still from days spent beneath the unforgiving desert sun. Three ties wear tasked with binding a mass of da...

Descendants #69 – One Week Chp. 7

This entry is part 46 of 46 in the series CurrentMonday

“Tea?” Kareem offered as he set up the electric kettle on the counter in his family’s kitchen.

“No thanks, I should head out soon.” said Melissa.

They had just finished a psychic training session and Melissa was slumped in her seat, as physically drained as she would have been had she spent the last half hour pumping iron.

Kareem nodded and only added enough water to the kettle for one cup. Then he came to sit at the kitchen table across fro...

Rune Breaker: Chapter 36 – The Truth of Brin

This entry is part 36 of 36 in the series Rune Breaker‘A smith on one of the outlying islands was afflicted by a divinity spark five days ago. Unfortunately, the spark drove him mad, resulting in the deaths of twelve citizens of the Empire and over thirty ang’hailene before the local garrison could end his threat. Liedecker Institute: Generation Aflame #14

This entry is part 14 of 14 in the series LI: Generations AflameMaya trudged far enough away from the others that they wouldn’t be hurt and planted herself between them and the avalanche. Looking up, she could see it: thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of tons of snow careening inexorably down the mountainside.

And the only thing between it and the others was Maya, a single candle against the mother of all snuffers.

Desperately, she tried to swallow her fear and muster her courage, but i...

Descendants #69 – One Week Chp. 6

This entry is part 45 of 45 in the series CurrentSunday

A hairy fist pounded the ornamental wrought iron fence along the ‘Rainforest: Life Beneath the Canopy’ exhibit at the GM Logan Zoo’s main thoroughfare. It would have dislocated Zero’s shoulder if she hadn’t dove into a roll ahead of it. The silverback lowland gorilla the fist was attached to grunted and flares his nostrils as he turned to track the heroine. There was a sigil burning a sinister dark orange over his heart: an upside down om...

This Old Monster: The Unicorn

Welcome to an article that will become a new feature here on my bloggery Fridays: This Old Monster, where much like Bob Vila , I take a classic monster that’s either underused or growing stale and breath new life into it with my usual brand of weirdness and finesse.

Our first subject is an oldie, but a goodie: the unicorn. Let’s get started:

The Monster

The unicorn, as I’m sure you’re all aware has a bit of an image problem.

Specifically this image.

Yes, the unicorn is the very definition of what s...

SIMaS Chapter 6 – So I Married a Supervillain

“Amanda?”

The name of Link’s wife slipped out of his mouth and into the room. There, it hung in the air, so bold and so prominent that it was as if they could both see it there between them.

All other noise seemed to be banished in its presence, and the atmosphere in the room, if it could have ever been said to have been comfortable, became the opposite of that.

Link swallowed a lump in his throat as horrible understanding dawn on him. He’d figured it out. He’d taken the clues as they’d come to...
