Flip City Preview!

IMG_2789

Flip City is the newest game from Tasty Minstrel. It’s a deck building card flipping sim type game that plays fast and is simple to grasp while still having a chunk of strategy.

Part of the game’s charm is the lovely art which was made by the game’s designer Chen Chih Fan. In many ways it calls back to old sim games while at the same time having the cute appeal of a modern mobile app.

Flip City is currently available for pre-order. Checkout some of the photos from my shoot below:

Thai Beef Salad!

beefsalad1

Houston has a few really nice Asian markets and as a result we’ve been doing a lot of asian food. Last weekend we made a Thai Beef Salad. It had a tangy spicy sauce that worked really well with the beef and other ingredients. The oddest thing about it though had to be the fresh ground mint leaves. I’ve rarely use mint but in this case it turned out super tasty.

City Hall Preview!

IMG_4853-Edit

City Hall, designed by Michael R. Keller, and published by Tasty Minstrel Games recently made its way onto my photography table.

In City Hall, players are running to be the Mayor of New York City. They bid on actions and it becomes a game about balancing cash reserves while still spending enough on campaigning and winning over votes. It has a lot of player interaction and plays fast. It’s also available from all major online retailers.

Check out some of the photos from my shoot:

The Eye of Hastur Cover Art!

yelloweyesmockup-finished-2

The cover art for The Eye of Hastur has been completed! Michael Regina who also did the art for National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day really hit it out of the park with this one.

Since the book is a choose your own adventure style book I’ll going to make the cover’s graphic design look old school like the books from the 80’s. As for a time table we are looking at a June release for this and National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day.

The Call of Cthulhu Poster!

4f0934564b04f3e4641b593b523fb79b_original

One of the things I’m offering on the National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day Kickstarter is a Call of Cthulhu Posters!

The 20×30 poster contains the entire Call of Cthulhu story written by H.P. Lovecraft. It is merely one of the many pieces of art, notes, and sketches found within the book, though it’s the only one I’m offering as a print. Also, as of now I have no plans to sell this after the kickstarter so if this is something you want then make sure you get it now.

The poster framed and hanging on my wall (to give you a better idea about how large it is).

Creators Cast: Kazu Kibuishi

creatorscastlonglogo

In the newest episodes of Creators Cast, I speak with cartoonist Kazu Kibuishi. Kazu is best known for his hit graphic novel series Amulet, but in comic circles his other books Copper, Flight, and Daisy Kutter are just as revered. So sit back and listen as he explains how he became a creator and what his production process is like.

The Eye of Hastur!

bonus

Want a copy of my next next book, “The Eye of Hastur?” Anyone who backs National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day (NCESD) will get a free e-book copy!

The Story of the Book:

The Eye of Hastur takes place several years after the events of NCESD. In it a secret cult is doing their best to summon The Yellow King, a dark avatar for Hastur, one of the Great Old Ones. Only YOU can unravel the  mystery and stop The Yellow King from sending the entire world into madness.

The Story Behind the Book:

After editing NCESD, I was really inspired by the people and setting. I wanted to play in the world. The problem is that the characters from NCESD are real people and writing a story about them felt weird. So to honor the meta-ness of NCESD I decided to an interactive novel was the way to go and that’s how The Eye of Hastur was born.

Now I love the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books. I grew up on them. That being said I’m not a fan of their randomness or how arbitrary decisions can lead to an unpredictable death. That means I’ve structured The Eye of Hastur more like a modern videos game. A good example would be The Walking Dead game published by Telltale Games or The Mass Effect series from Bioware.

ff9d242c96ac09c169343843c162e08d_original

Of course you can’t forget your roots so in preparation I spent a lot of time reading a bunch of the classic CYOA books but also delved into the larger world of gamebooks, including a few modern ones. You can see about half of the books I read as research in the photo above.

Right now I’m wrapping up re-writes of The Eye of Hastur and will give it to beta readers on Friday. The plan is to release it simultaneously with NCESD this summer. Please note that the cover mock-up seen above is just a mock-up. The cover artists turned in concept sketches last week and is only just starting to draw the cover now. Once the final artwork is done I’ll share it!

As excited as I am about National Cthulhu Eats Spaghetti Day I’m even more excited about The Eye of Hastur. I think a lot of people are not only going to enjoy the dark adventure but will have many scares along the way.

On a side note: To those of you who are already backing, thank you so much for believing in this project.
