Review: Running On Empty

Running On Empty by Christy ReeceMy rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love love love this book. The first thought that rushed into my mind while reading this was, why the hell did I put off reading this book for so long?

I have always enjoyed a good romantic suspense that keeps me on my toes. This is so damn good. The prologue hooked me right away, (I never skip prologue because to me they always hold something that makes sense later into a story). I knew something bad is going to happen and when it did, I was really holding my breath to read how this was going to play out.

Declan Steele and Sabrina Fox are undercover agents for a secret government agency. The couple's marriage is a secret known only to a few. On their last night together, Declan tells her that he plan's to leave the agency and start new. But after two months, Sabrina witness her husband blown to bits and pieces on her way to meet him.

Sabrina continues on her missions with a bleeding heart, throwing herself into work as it was the only thing that keeps her growing. But after a successful mission, she's taken. She's locked and bound in a dusty cell. Her captor's voice oddly feels familiar and it's even shocker to see it was her dead husband.

The rest of the book answers what really happened to Declan and why he's back with a vengeance to kill his once beloved wife. I enjoyed the roller coaster ride and many parts of it made me so emotional. I was literally scratching my head to figure, who the real villain is and 50% figured it out toward the end. But it was still a surprise.

Christy Reece is my new favorite author and I'm definitely devouring her other books in the series. The writing style blew my mind away and a few times I stopped to re-read a sentence because it was so good. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good action packed romance.

Spoiler Alert: The book has a happy ending.

10 things to do during Lock down!

Covid-19 aka Coronavirus has forced everyone indoors. The life as we know it has changed as we are under lockdown. Having a positive mindset will make this quarantine time bearable. In this post, I tried to highlight the need to stay indoors and listed a few things you can do during this time.
Remember the thrill and the sense of helplessness we feel when you watch the apocalypse themed movies? Resident Evil, I’m Legend, World War Z, Afterearth, Zombieland , how many times have we seen this situation play out in front of our eyes? How many times we were furious at those characters for foolishly dying?
Many of us might have even imagined how we will react if something like that really happened. Well, it is one such situation now.
The situation is real and it is dangerous. Just because you’re safe now doesn’t mean you can be forever. It’s important that we quarantine ourself to stop the outbreak and protect our families. What’s more important is to stay positive and stay united, so we can get through this hardship.
How long were you longing for a break? How many were complaining that they don’t have time for their family? Why don’t we utilize this situation to do things we always wanted to do?
Many people are working from home, some companies have announced leave for their employees, but that shouldn’t stop you from spending these days productively in a safe environment (within the walls of your home).
Why is it necessary to distance our self?
This deadly virus spreads from one human to the other.
BBCwrote explained the danger, citing the Spanish flu pandemic in their recent article. A few lines below:
In the midst of this pandemic, during September 1918, cities around the US were planning parades to promote liberty bonds, being sold to help pay for the war effort in Europe. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where 600 soldiers were already infected with the flu virus, city chiefs decided to go ahead with their parade. Meanwhile, the city of Saint Louis, Missouri, opted to cancel their parade and introduce other measures to limit public gatherings. One month later, more than 10,000 people in Philadelphia had died of Spanish flu, while the number of fatalities in Saint Louis stayed below 700.
The parade was not the only reason for the difference in death rates, but the figures show the importance of measures now known as “social distancing” can have during pandemics. “Social distancing refers to a way of creating a barrier of physical distance between two or more people so that transmission of the virus can be prevented or halted,” says Arindam Basu, associate professor of epidemiology and environmental health at the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand.
BBC further states,
One of the main aims of social distancing is to “flatten the curve”, which means delaying the spread of the virus so it reaches people more slowly. The idea is to lengthen the time period over which the virus travels through a population and push the peak number of cases back so it appears later. A graph showing the number of infections would peak much more quickly without social distancing. With it, the curve is much flatter, meaning at any given time the number of infected people, and therefore people needing urgent care and resources, is lower.
As a responsible citizen, we must adhere to the mandatory precautions laid out by the governments and healthcare organizations.
What can we do to make the most out of this lockdown?
1.      Spend time with your family — Our busy life has reduced the quality time we spend together with our family. Use this opportunity to spend your time with your loved ones.
2.      Read the books from your #TBR pile —Are you a bookworm? Our reading pile is endless. Download Amazon Kindle app, if you haven’t already. There are hundreds of free books every day. Authors are giving away their books for free to make this quarantine bearable. Watch this video if you don’t know how to download books. There are also many apps like Inkitt and Wattpad where you can read novels for free.
3.      Watch your favorite movies — When is the last time you binge watched a movie or tv series? It’s time to dust your DVD’s collection. Pop some popcorns and get on that couch now.
4.      Catch up with your old friends —(only through online portals J) How long has it been since you had a relaxing chat with your friends and acquaintances? Get online and reminisce some warm memories with them.
5.      Clean/declutter your home — My living room, actually the entire home is such a mess. If you’re already well organized, no worries, but if you’re like me, it’s time to clean and declutter or redecorate your home. Check out this Pinterest Boardfor more ideas.

Blog Tour: Sinister Fairy Tales Collection by Kimberly Knight

Title: LockSeries: Sinister Fairy Tales CollectionAuthor: Kimberly KnightGenre: Dark Fairytale RetellingRelease Date: March 17, 2020

Before Zell was born, her fate was sealed.

Held captive in a high-rise overlooking New York City since the age of twelve, she had no friends her own age, no life outside of the penthouse, and absolutely no choices of her own. But what she didn’t realize was the tower where she lost her freedom would one day become her salvation. Her prince would arrive, they would fall in love, and they would come up with a plan for her to escape so they could live happily ever after.
If only it were that easy.
Every girl dreams of her life becoming a fairy tale, even Zell, who’s knowledge of romance was simply from the books she stole from other girls at the brothel.
In a world where sex, drugs, and manipulation is solely the life she knows, the only fairy tale poor Zell would endure would be a sinister one …
Because freedom always comes at a price.

"Now, son"—Frank squeezed Frank Jr's shoulder—"tonight, you can have any one of these ladies that you want. More than one if you’d like."

My heart, which had finally returned to its regular beat, felt as though it was cracking in my chest as I listened to what Frank said. Of course, that was why they were here.

"I told you I wasn't a virgin," Frank Jr. said in a low voice.

Frank chuckled. "That may be, but any one of these ladies will make sure you're well taken care of. You might learn some things. It's your birthday, enjoy it."

Frank Jr. replied, his voice still low, "Whores aren't my thing."

"These are the finest ones around, son. You'll be in safe hands. Take your pick, and then I can pick mine."

"And if I don't?" Frank Jr. asked.

"Then you'll piss me off," Frank stated, giving Frank Jr. a stern look.

"I can assure you," Madam cut in, "all of my girls are clean and well trained. They aren't like high school girls." She chuckled.

Frank Jr. looked at his father another moment and then stepped toward the line of girls. He still hadn't taken a sip of the vodka in his hand, and that made me nervous. I wasn't sure what Madam would do to me if Frank Jr. asked for something else. Was Grey Goose not a good brand?

Just like Madam had done not ten minutes prior, Frank Jr. walked by each girl, looking them up and down from their heads to their feet and back up. When he got to the end, I expected him to walk back down the line because he hadn't made a decision yet. Instead, he stopped in front of me, looking back at Frank and Madam. "I choose her," he said.

My eyes widened as Madam said in a raised voice, "Zell isn't one of the girls."

"She's not?" Frank Jr. questioned and turned his head to look at me.

I lowered my gaze while I waited for Madam to respond. I expected her to say something about me being her daughter, and therefore, off-limits. Instead, she said, "She's never been with a man before. She wouldn't know what to do. Pick one of the others. They will show you a good time."

My face got hot again, and I was certain I looked like a tomato. I couldn't believe that Madam had told Frank Jr. I was a virgin. I'd read about a virgin once. She met a guy with a helicopter and had weird sex with him. She seemed to like it, but that didn't mean I was ready for this handsome boy to know I was a virgin.

"Is that true?" Frank Jr. asked as he looked into my eyes. "Are you a virgin?" I nodded, not able to speak. He turned back to Madam and his father. "Then, yes, I want her."

"She's not even groomed," Madam stated to Frank.

"Son, why don't you pick someone else?"

"With all due respect, Father, you brought me here to, what was it? Become a man? Being a man is choosing who I want to sleep with, and I choose …" He paused for a moment. "Zell."

The tray I was still holding fell from my grasp and clattered onto the floor. Madam's gaze snapped to me, and my eyes widened before I quickly bent to pick it up. My heart was beating so fast in my chest that I was certain Frank Jr. could hear it. I kept my gaze on the floor, not able to look at anyone. I couldn't believe this was happening.

Review: Ghost of a Chance

Ghost of a Chance by Cynthia EdenMy rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another romantic suspense with toe curling romance

Cynthia Eden comes back with another action packed romance this year with Ghost of a Chance though I'll call this more of a romance than action.

Dr. Barrett is secretive and a workaholic. A night out with her friends crosses her path with the infamous club owner James Smith. Though attracted to him at a very primitive level, she backs up at the last moment. But when she has a bad day at the hospital, she finds herself at his club again.

James is attracted to the doctor like he was never attracted to any other women. He looks at her and he wants her. But his hands aren't clean like he wish to be. Getting close to Tess might not be good idea. So, he gives her a choice to leave and run as far as possible from him. Only every chance meeting brings them closer.

But as the lovers grow closer, both their past comes to haunt them, threatening their future together. The rest of the story revolves around the couple and the unknown enemy.

If you exclude the few trademark scenes like car running over, stalking, trashing room, hero hauling heroine to his home which we see in every book of this series, this is an enjoyable read. While I am a great fan of Cynthia's stories, I wanted something different that didn't remind me of her other books.

But the plus side of her stories is the villain, who is always a surprise to us, readers until the ending. In this story also, you will end up playing the guessing game till the last. Other characters I liked is Linc and Blair. A lot is going on there. We see them in the last book, One Hot Holiday.

I'm glad to hear that their book is next. I loved their interactions. Cole as usual is trying to fit in the scene, but stands out with his bad boy persona and gets hurt as usual. I wish there were more scenes with James as a ghost. It would have made my day. Overall a good read with toe curling romance.

I received an advanced review copy of this book from the author and leaving a review voluntarily.

Review: Fame

Fame Fame by R.J. Rome
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I went into this story without any expectation. I like second chance romances and this slowly wormed its way into my heart. This emotional read go back and forth between the past and present of the characters and it was like watching a movie.

Mark and Jenna was divorced, but when they meet after five years, they realize they still hold feelings for each other. But the past is not easy to face. My heart hurt every time Mark and Jenna met, so much love hidden. I'm glad how the story worked out for both the characters. We see how both characters grow and mature throughout the story.

So many ups and downs and relatable events makes the story more likeable. The story also talks about addiction, I'm glad it all worked out in the end. The book was very emotional at times. A nice and refreshing read for me.

Review: Finding Hope

Finding Hope Finding Hope by Michele Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is such an emotional roller coaster for me. I loved Finding Hope. When I read the blurb of the story, I was intrigued and read a sample chapter before diving right in.

Jackson struggles with PTSD and has locked himself from outside world. A new project brings outside his safety haven and he runs into Devyn. While she tries to help him, his own struggles are not that easy to get over with. This story revolves around the characters as they try to overcome the hurdles. Jackson and Devyn were so realistic and relatable characters for me. I felt like I was living among the characters while reading.

It was really a wonderful read and I loved the writing style of the author. Thank you for such a beautiful story. It was different from the books I have read before. Looking forward to another read from this author.

Review: One Hot Holiday

One Hot Holiday One Hot Holiday by Cynthia Eden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received ARC of this book via BookFunnel and leaving a review willingly.

One Hot Holiday is a holiday romance by romantic suspense author Cynthia Eden. This is from Wilde agents series and can be read as a standalone itself.

Haley is on the run from something or rather someone. The place she chose to hide is a small town far away from a bustling city of New York. Sheriff Spence Lane knows she's hiding a secret, the moment he meets her. Fortunately, she's his guest, renting a cottage he owns in town. But soon, Haley becomes a target and Spence is furious because his town is in danger. Moreover, Haley is in danger.

What ensues is the cat and mouse chase with the romance brewing in the wind. This is a fast moving romance set in a small town with lot of holiday elements. A good read indeed.

Review: Slay All Day

Slay All Day by Cynthia EdenMy rating: 5 of 5 stars

Slay All Day by Cynthia Eden is definitely a treat to Paranormal Lovers and Eden fans. After a few romantic suspense books in a row, this felt like a jackpot.

Elise is on the run for her life. She’s a banished princess, not used to the life of humans. In a day, her life takes a one-eighty-degrees turn and her only chance of survival is Harrison, the big-bad hunter. But Harrison has a secret he’s not aware of. When she demands his services he first walks away, but later changes his mind and decides to help her. Elise is continuously attacked by the supernaturals in the area. Harrison suspects something is off with her, but she continues to twist the truth because the moment he learns of her identity he will kill her.

The book packs a lot of surprises along the way and keep us thrilled throughout. There are many wow moments. Elise is sarcastic with a touch of wickedness. But that side of her isn’t shown much. She often jumps in front of the gun to save people who are close to Harrison. She makes us laugh and most of the times her thoughts leave us some clues. But it isn’t almost after a good 70% into the story you get to know what she actually is.

My favorite character in this entire story and the one who steals the show is Harrison Key. I had my doubts on what he could be throughout and I gave myself a pat on the back for guessing it right. That’s one thing about Cynthia. I like how she led her readers on a guessing game before the secrets are revealed. Another highlight is the romance. It was hot, packed with lot of steam and the anticipation was just right. Harrison Key is a whole package.

I wanted the story to last even when it was over, and binge read it in a day. Thanks a lot for this story. I can’t wait for another Paranormal romance from this author. Highly recommend this book.
