Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing

Get ready because this week’s Book Marketing Update is a super whopper!

I took last week off and during that time, I rediscovered TikTok.

A few years ago, I opened an account and after a few months closed it.

With time on my hands, I decided to reopen my account. Man, was I surprised by what I found.

You won’t find any vitriolic posts — at least I couldn’t find them. (Such a relief!)

Plus, #BookTok is a huge thing right now. Previously published authors are being rediscovered and new authors are finding success on this little, positive, and vastly popular social media platform.

I’ve included a few posts about TikTok in this update. Be sure to check them out. Personally, I find TikTok dangerously addictive.

So, beware!

Book Marketing

QR Code Generator for Authors from Kindlepreneur: “A QR Code is a small square image that is scannable using smart devices like your iPhone or Android phone. The ‘QR stands for quick response … With our QR codes generator for authors, you can not only create QR codes that link to your books, but you can also include your author logo or a book cover, to help keep track of what QR codes you have.”

Hive: Hive Index is a directory of online communities. Use it to find communities interested in the genre of your books.

TikTok is taking the book industry by storm, and retailers are taking notice from NBC News: ” ‘BookTok’ has sent old books back to the top of bestseller lists and helped launch the careers of new authors. Videos with the BookTok hashtag have been viewed a collective 12.6 billion times.”

The rise of BookTok: meet the teen influencers pushing books up the charts from The Guardian: “Young TikTok users are sharing their passion for books with millions – bringing titles they love to life online and reshaping the publishing world, all in under a minute.”

BookTok Is The Last Wholesome Place on the Internet from Refinery29 UK and by Alicia Lansom: “If you were starting to think that social media was filled purely with angry people shouting at one another for no reason, you wouldn’t exactly be wrong. But thankfully, in the depths of TikTok, there is a wholesome place reigniting faith in the internet.”

How TikTok Makes Backlist Books into Bestsellers from Publishers Weekly: “BookTok’s power to promote books relies on its grassroots nature. Through self-made content, users create the sort of literary publicity that, in its sincerity, money literally cannot buy.”

Publishing

Every publishing strategy should start with Amazon and Ingram – The Idea Logical Company/Mike Shatzkin: “What has happened since the pre-21st Century publishing world I — and so many of the executives now running things in our industry — grew up in is that book sales have shifted and fragmented.

Take A Look-See Here Too

You Are A Writer – You Create And License Intellectual Property Assets from Joanna Penn: “You have to understand IP and rights licensing in order to make a living as an author for the long-term, whether you work with an agent or you’re entirely independent.”

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) offers a free webinar on how authors can get the most out of Amazon ads: Optimize your ads with the help of Bryan Cohen.

What To Do When “Someone Published a Book Just Like Mine”? Lisa delves into the positive side and extracts lessons for writers working on a book that someone else just published.

Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing Update

Welcome to this week’s Book Marketing Update. How are you doing?

Today, I have another roundup for you that is chock full of tips and strategies all designed to help you sell more books.

So, sit back and enjoy!

Book Marketing

Create A Great Throughline For Your Book from Bard Press: “I just got done reading Adam Davidson’s book The Passion Economy … I found the book frustrating, but not because it wasn’t good. I was frustrated because I don’t think the book reached its full potential. I fear recommending it because many readers will just think it was OK. Not true! The trouble is that all the pieces don’t fit together as well as they could.”

How To Make This E-Commerce Holiday Season Your Best Yet from Forbes: “E-commerce has never been more competitive. However, the market is also bigger than ever before. While e-commerce has been growing steadily for years, it has grown exponentially since the Covid-19 pandemic hit last year.”

Does the Idea of Promoting Your Book Make You Feel Queasy? from Jane Friedman’s blog and by Lizbeth Meredith: “While a small group of enthusiasts may swap tips between sessions, the attitude of far too many—especially authors who fancy themselves literary—is that the promo piece is unsavory. They’re too important, and drumming up their own book buzz feels beneath them. (“Isn’t that someone else’s job?”) Or they’re too introverted. Too icked-out by the idea of becoming a self-promoter. The problem? Their books join the other million-plus published annually that don’t find their forever home in the hands of the right readers.”

Email Marketing

2019 Black Friday & Cyber Monday Email Checklis from MailerLite: “Email marketing is essential, as it gets your promotion directly in front of your customer’s eyes. This time of year, consumers are anticipating hoards of special offers landing in their inbox, so you’ll need a good strategy to compete with the chaos and get in on the action.”

NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo: How to Fly by the Seat of Your Pants—and Win from Jane Friedman and by Stephanie Bourbon: “When I first did NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2006, I started with nothing but a book title. That’s a little too much pantsing even for me.”

Social Media

27 Time-Saving Blogging Tools for a Supreme Content Marketing Strategy in 2022 [Infographic] from Social Media Today: “Want a list of tools that can streamline your blogging process? The team from Website Setup share their tools for success in this infographic.”

AudioBooks

5 Key Benefits Of Publishing Audiobooks For Indie Authors from Writer’s Edit: In this post, Writer’s Edit outlines the five key benefits of audiobooks for the self-published author.

Bookstagrams of Audiobooks: 17 Gorgeous Pics You Need to See from BookBubPartners: “f you’re trying to build buzz for an audiobook … posting eye-catching pictures of it on social media can be a great way to attract attention.”

Book Marketing Update

Bloggers were active this past week, which explains why the Book Marketing Update is so rich with marketing news today.

If you don’t subscribe to Jane Friedman’s free Electric Speed newsletter, don’t delay. She also produces The HotSheet, which costs $60 annually for the subscription. It’s another great newsletter to receive from Jane and well worth the nominal fee. And while I’m on this topic, be sure to subscribe to Jane’s blog. Her voice is, in my humble view, the most knowledgeable one available to writers.

Enjoy this roundup and have a lovely weekend.

Book Marketing

12 Free Graphic Design Tools for Authors by David Gaughran: “Free graphic design tools have had a huge impact on my business. One big change in my approach to self-publishing in the last few years has been recognizing the importance of branding… and doing something about it too, I guess.”

11 Powerful Book Promotion Ideas for Self-Published Authors from Editage: “For authors, marketing essentially involves drawing and engaging your target audience by sharing more about yourself and your book. It really is as simple as communicating.”

Great for Book Marketing: The Hive Index from Jane Friedman’s newsletter Electric Speed: Here’s what Jane Friedman has to say about this website: “You’ve probably heard the advice to hang out online wherever your readers are, at some mysterious, as-yet-unidentified water cooler. How do you find these people out of thin air? Try The Hive Index. It lists more than 900 communities that you can search by topic.”

Email Marketing

How to protect your social media with email from MailerLite: “Many of us spend a lot of time and money building our Facebook and Instagram business accounts. But what happens when there is a major outage? Or worse, you wake up to find that Facebook deleted your page?”

Author Blogs

How to Blog for Your Way to Expert Status by Nina Amir: “You want expert status, and you’re wondering how to achieve that coveted state sooner rather than later. No worries. Your blog can help you become an expert…fast.”

Social Media

How to Add a Link in Bio on Instagram and TikTok to Drive More Traffic from Hootsuite: “Even if you’ve only seen a few posts on Instagram or TikTok, you will have likely come across the phrase ‘link in bio’ … But what does ‘link in bio’ actually mean? Why are people always using it? And should you get in on the action too? Let’s find out!”

Must Reads

Overcoming Overwhelm to Write a Book — and Finish It! by Lisa Tener: Check out Lisa Tener’s four tips for writing and finishing your book.

More focused than an autobiography, a memoir is an intimate look at a moment in time. from Celadon Books: “A memoir is a narrative, written from the perspective of the author, about an important part of their life.”

Quote of the Week

“I had this idea that the novel can change things. If you help make people see the injustice in the world and the corruption in the world, the world will become a better place. And my life, and also my novels, got a lot better when I let go of that idea and came around to a notion of a community of readers and writers, and that the service was not to Society with a capital S, but service to that community.”

Book Marketing Update

I hope you enjoy this edition of the Book Marketing Update.

For some reason, there were a lot of blog posts about social media and authors. I especially like those types of posts and I hope you’ll enjoy the ones I selected below.

Social media is transitioning to an audio medium. If this is where your readers tend to hang out online, be sure to learn how to use Twitter Spaces and Clubhouse to help you with your book marketing.

Enjoy these cooler and beautiful autumn days.

Book Marketing

Success Without Self-Promotion from Writer Unboxed and by Greer Macallister: “Instead of self-promotion, think of the path to getting your book in front of readers on social media as a railroad track, with two parallel rails: be yourself, and take yourself out of the equation.”

TikTok for Authors: Best-Kept Secrets for Selling Your Books on the #1 Social Media App — Shayla Raquel: I don’t agree with this bloggers assessment. Why? Because the demographics of TikTok might not meet the demographics of your readership. Decide for yourself. “And considering being an author is not just “like” running a business, it is a business, then there’s no good reason for authors not to be using TikTok to their advantage when selling their books.”

5 Indie Author Mistakes That Can Tank Book Sales from Anne R. Allen and Ruth Harris: This blog post delineates the five common mistakes that indie authors tend to make.

Social Media

Making Social Media Easier from Chanticleer Book Reviews and by David Beaumier:  “Social media can feel like a scary thing, but if you work on a schedule and promise yourself a little time on it each week, it’ll grow before you know it.”

15 Ways Authors Support Each Other on Social Media from BookBub Partners: “… we’ve been inspired by how authors have stepped up to build community and spotlight their fellow writers’ work.”

Twitter Announces Broader Roll-Out of New Spaces Tab, Adds New Spaces Invite Process from Social Media Today: “… Twitter is launching a broader roll out of its new Spaces tab in the app ….”

Amazon

How to Self Publish a Hardcover Book on Amazon from Dave Chesson: “Publishing a hardcover book used to be a complicated task. Amazon didn’t produce them through KDP Print, so you had to go to Lulu or IngramSpark to get them done, which cost extra and resulted in really expensive hardcovers for readers. But that has changed.”

Take a Look

Want To Improve Your Writing Craft And Business? from Joanna Penn and with Kevin J. Anderson: “In order to write your novel in a month or less, you need to develop a plan and increase your productivity.”

Quote of the WeekFall scene.Quote: Frances CaballoHey, I’m Frances Caballo and I’m a social media expert for writers, building and managing author platforms to enhance book sales. Amazon says it’s just getting started. It’s supplementing royalties with bonuses in the meantime to help keep authors engaged.”

Social Media

Facebook Tests New Option to Facilitate Post Sharing to Multiple Groups at Once from Social Media Today: This new option would enable Facebook users to crosspost content to multiple groups and get more people sharing more content.

Of Note

What is Upmarket Fiction? And Book Club Fiction? Are They New Genres? by Anne R. Allen: “You can find lots of lists of fiction genres, but you won’t see “Upmarket fiction” included. You may have seen somebody mention “Book Club” novels, but you won’t find that section in a bookstore, either.”

Can Fiction Make a Difference in the World? by Susan DeFreitas and from Jane Friedman’s blog: Think about the books by James Baldwin and the difference he made in literature and life. He was as political as he was literary.
