Book Marketing Update

I hope you enjoy today’s Book Marketing Update.

You’ll find links to articles about book launches, Goodreads, author blogs, and more.

Enjoy and keep writing!

Book Marketing

10 Reasons to Delay Your Book Launch – from Author Media (Thomas Umstattd, Jr.): “You’ve worked on your book for years, and you’re ready to share it with the world. But be careful. You are at great risk of making one of the classic blunders. “

Book Marketing with Goodreads

How to Use Goodreads to Promote Your Book – from Author Media (Thomas Umstattd Jr.): “If you are an author, Goodreads users are your people. If you spend time on Facebook trying to connect with readers, remember that only 30% of the population has ever read an ebook. But on Goodreads, 100% of the users are readers of books, and most of them read ebooks.”

Author Blogs

Why So Many Blogs and Newsletters Aren’t Worth the Writer’s Effort – by Jane Friedman: “

Writers are told so often, and so adamantly, that they need to blog or have an email newsletter that I read countless confused and half-hearted attempts. I fell into that category myself years ago, directionless but feeling like I had to do something. Unfortunately, doing something can be worse than nothing if it takes time away from more valuable writing and marketing activities.”

Social Media

Food Businesses Lose Faith in Instagram After Algorithm Changes – from The New York Times: The point of this article is to focus on video. “Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced the change in a video posted to his Twitter account in the final days of 2021. “We’re going to double down on our focus on video,” Mr. Mosseri said. “We’re no longer just a photo-sharing app.”

3 Legal Issues to Avoid When Writing Your Book by Joseph Perry and from Anne R. Allen and Rush Harris’s blog: “When you sit down to write your book, there are some legal issues that you need to be cognizant of. These include defamation, invasion of privacy, and right of publicity (a form of privacy). There are other items to be aware of as well, but let’s focus on these three for now.”

Today I’ll share how I secured the almighty BBFD and maximized its impact.”

Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing

This week’s Book Marketing Update is on the light side yet there are some gems here.

BookBub has a helpful blog with some great tips for indie authors. The most recent blog post looked at ways that nonfiction authors can use Instagram to promote their books.

Nonfiction authors are often left out of the discussion on marketing strategies. Yet truth be told, nonfiction books are easier to sell.

The article on Author Central is also an important one to check out.

Have a great weekend!

Book Marketing

16 Creative Ways Authors Promote Nonfiction Books on Instagram – from BookBub Partners: “Instagram’s booming book scene is no secret; there are nearly 70 million posts with the hashtag #bookstagram on the social media platform. For many authors, Instagram can be an important place to connect with readers and promote their books, both fiction and nonfiction.”

Free In-Depth Marketing Guides – from Nicholas Erik: Nicholas Erik is an indie author advertising expert. I learned about him through Jane Friedman’s Hot Sheet. If you don’t subscribe to it, I urge you to do so.

Publishing

Different Ways of Publishing Through Substack and NFTs – from Joanna Penn and with Elle Griffin: “What if the traditional publishing model is not the best way to publish a book in a digital age? What if publishing it as an ebook on Amazon is not the best way, either? Elle Griffin questions the established ways of publishing a book and explains how she is using SubStack and NFTs for her words.”

Welcome to the new, updated Amazon Author Central – from Amazon: Traditionally published authors have, until now, been unable to run their own advertising campaigns. All that has changed now.

Suleika Jaouad on Releasing the “Between Two Kingdoms” Paperback Amid the Return of Her Cancer: “Suleika Jaouad’s 2021 memoir Between Two Kingdoms is the kind of book that moved me on a cellular level—the kind I stayed up too late listening to, compulsively texted my friends about and mourned when it was over.”

Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing Update

With so much going on in the world, it only makes sense that this Book Marketing Update would be a day late, right?

As a lot of people in the world, I’ve been aghast at the atrocities occurring in Ukraine. On my Twitter account, where I never get political, I’ve broken my own rule of neutrality. I do my best to keep my political views to myself on that platform, but I can’t seem to keep my position to myself on this unjust and criminal war.

Back to this blog post ….

Jane Friedman has beeb crushing it this year with some great posts from guest bloggers. If you don’t subscribe to her blog, you’re truly missing out on some gems of advice.

That’s not to say that I agree with all of the social media advice from her guest writers.

Case in point, this past week a guest blogger suggested that writers need to use the social media platforms that they enjoy most. I disagree. Authors need to use the social media platforms that their readers frequent and enjoy the most.

If I were a young adult author I wouldn’t find my readers on LinkedIn, despite how much time I spent on that platform. Nope. I’d need to use TikTok and Instagram.

There were a lot of great blog posts published this past week and I think I selected the best for today’s roundup. Let me know know what you think.

Book Marketing

How to Launch Your Book on a Budget – from Author Media: Love the first lines of this post: “There are two ways to think about book marketing. You can view it as an expense to be minimized or an investment to be maximized.”

Social Media

Hashtags For Writers: Free Generator Tool – from Dave Chesson and Y. Eevi Jones: This is what Dave Chesson has to say about this new tool -> “Hashtags are a great tool to increase discoverability on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter. My problem is – I never know which hashtags to use. And it can take a long time to do all the research, make a big long list, type it all up in the appropriate platform, and do it again and again for every post. … That’s why with the help of Y. Eevi Jones, of Children’s Book University®, we designed a hashtag generator for authors to use.”

How to Make Money Through Social Media Without Being an Influencer – from Jane Friedman and by Ashleigh Renard: “Can a writer really make money off social media? The answer is yes—and it’s probably easier than you think.”

Which Social Media Platform Is the Best? – from Jane Friedman’s blog and by Caroline Topperman: My opinion on this topic is this: Use the social media platforms that your readers frequent.

Email Marketing

A Thousand New Email Sign Ups in a Week? It’s Possible. – from Jane Friedman’s Blog and by Ashleigh Renard: “Speak to any group of writers about platform-building and within five minutes you’ll hear someone mention that they “should” be building their email list or how nice it would be to have a paid newsletter.”

Blog Post Marketing

How to Promote Your Blog if You’re Super Busy [Infographic] – from Social Media Today: Basically, you can promote your blog posts with advertising, optimizing each post’s keywords, and use social media and your email marketing list to promote your newest post.

Banned Books

An Educator Read ‘I Need a New Butt!’ to Children. Then He Was Fired. – from The New York Times: “It was Read Across America week, and the second graders in the Hinds County School District in Mississippi were waiting for an administrator to read to them. The administrator had forgotten it was her turn, said Toby Price, the assistant principal at Gary Road Elementary School in Hinds County, who was in his office at the time. He decided to fill in.

“Mr. Price, 46, quickly grabbed a book — ‘I Need a New Butt!’ by Dawn McMillan, one of his children’s favorites — and began reading it to the roughly 240 second graders over Zoom.

“Later that day, on March 2, the district superintendent, Delesicia Martin, called him into her office and told him he was on administrative leave, Mr. Price said. He was fired two days later, accused of violating the standards of conduct section of the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics.”

More to Read

How Ukrainian children understand the war – from The Washington Post: “The wave of refugees flooding through Europe is striking not just for its historic scale and speed, but because half the people who have fled the war in Ukraine are children.”

Quote of the Week

“In a time of destruction, create something: a poem, a parade, a community, a school, a vow, a moral principle; one peaceful moment.”

….”
WH Auden
from his poem, “September 1, 1939”

Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing Update

This is a humdinger of a Book Marketing Update that I hope you’ll enjoy.

This edition is light on book marketing posts and heavy on social media news. A lot is happening online and the blog posts I selected will bring you up to date.

Be sure to check out the post about creativity and the one that suggests books to help you understand the history and people of Ukraine.

Peace to all.

Book Marketing

How to Survive Book Marketing Burnout – from Dave Chesson: “Burnout is something many writers are familiar with, but it’s also something you might struggle to admit. It’s easy to make excuses for why you’re feeling exhausted or worn down—especially when admitting you’re burnt out means facing the fact that your marketing efforts aren’t working.”

Publishing

Business Musings: Exclusivity in 2022, Part One – by Kristine Rusch: “I’m doing a deep dive into a few companies that caught my eye in 2021. I want to see if I can expand my reach using their services. I’m also evaluating whether or not those services will take too much of my time. I’m noticing something in almost all of them. Their service is scalable. Meaning, it has levels.”

Social Media

What is the Metaverse, Exactly, and How Will it Change Digital and Social Connection? – from Social Media Today: There has been a lot of news about Meta’s (Facebook/Instagram) new Metaverse. But, what is all the buzz about and how does this virtual reality work? If you want to know, tap the link.

You are taken to Search Settings. Here’s a screenshot:

TikTok Confirms that 10 Minute Video Uploads are Coming to All Users – from Social Media Today: “Short-form video is the trend of the moment, and with attention spans reducing, and new engagement behaviors taking hold, particularly among younger demographics, it seems like short-form interaction is here to stay, which is why every platform is now following TikTok’s lead into the next phase of video connection. But effective monetization of short-form video is hard.”

Author Scams

Out of the Blue, Too Good to Be True: Beware Solicitation Scams – from Writer Unboxed and by Victoria Strauss: “Solicitation scammers contact writers out of the blue with publishing-related offers that seem too good to be true. A literary agency is interested in your work! A prestigious publisher wants to acquire your book! A film producer wants to turn your novel into a movie! A marketing company can expose you to millions of potential fans! You know the old adage, though: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

6 Books to Read for Context on Ukraine – from the New York Times: “Here are six books that shed light on the conflict and Ukraine’s history.”

Creativity

How to make creativity part of your daily routine – from National Public Radio: “Julia Cameron, the author of the bestselling book The Artist’s Way, has spent her career teaching “creative unblocking.” In her new book, Seeking Wisdom: a spiritual path to creative connection, Cameron combines the creative practices of The Artist’s Way, with a new intentional practice – prayer.

This post includes information on marketing books, social media and book marketing, pitching, pen names, and more!

Enjoy the tips referenced below.

Book Marketing

Want to use BookBub to promote your books, but have a limited budget? This info might help. – from BookBub Partners: Book Marketing “… can be expensive, and if you’re on a budget, navigating the costs of different opportunities may feel daunting. The good news is, it’s not impossible!”

Do Blurbs Actually Work? – from Counter Craft: Testimonials do help to sell books. Check out this blog post to find out how.

Social Media & Book Sales

How TikTok Helped Fuel The Best-Selling Year For Print Books – from Forbes: “Readers purchased 825 million copies of print books in the U.S. in 2021—the best-selling year for print books, NPD Bookscan says, since it began tracking data in 2004—and analysts believe young people posting about books on social media played a serious role in those big numbers.” Note: #BookTok (TikTok) fueled a lot of these sales.

Pitching Your Book

How to Pitch Like a Hollywood Pro – from Jane Friedman and by Peter Desberg and Jeffrey Davis: “The first moments you enter a room can determine the role you’re placed in. Your attire, your posture, the way you enter the room, the type of eye contact you make, and your handshake are what people notice first. And they still haven’t heard your first word.”

Publishing

Publishing Scammers are Everywhere: How to Stay Safe – by Anne R. Allen: Awesome blog post! Anne R. Allen writes: “Publishing Scammers get more brazen all the time, and there seem to be more of them every day. Sometimes I wonder if all those people who have mysteriously quit their jobs aren’t now working as con artists and phone scammers.”

Tips for Indie Author Success & 20 Books to 50K – with Craig Martelle and from Joanna Penn: “Craig Martelle shares tips on writing, self-publishing, and book marketing, as well as how 20 Books To 50K believes in the rising tide that lifts all boats, and how helping each other is the best way for indies to prosper.”

Author Pen Names

Take Five: Greer Macallister and her New Novel “Scorpice” – from Writer Unboxed and Greet MacCallister: “It’s a choice authors and their publishers make sometimes when an author moves from one genre to another, and that’s exactly the case here. Greer’s latest book is SCORPICA, the first in an epic fantasy series called the Five Queendoms, and marking a step away from her bestselling historical fiction (for now).”

Take a Look at These, Too

How Marlon James, Novelist, Spends His Sundays – from The New York Times: Learn about how this Man Booker Prize winner from Jamaica spends his Sundays. (Yeah, he starts with reading.)

From the New York Times: Check out author Richard Russo’s review of a new book, “Mercy Street” by Jennifer Haig.

Quote of the Week

“Storytelling is an act of cruelty. We are cruel to our characters because to be kind is to invite boredom, and boredom in storytelling is synonymous with big doomy death-shaped death. So: be cruel to your protagonist. Rob him of something. Something important. Something he needs. A weapon. An asset. A piece of knowledge. A loved one. A DELICIOUS PIE. Take it away! Force him to operate without it. Conflict reinvigorates stale stories. New conflict, or old conflict that has evolved and grown teeth.” Chuck Wendig, author, screenwriter, blogger

Frances Caballo

Hey, I’m Frances Caballo and I’m a social media expert for writers, building and managing author platforms to enhance book sales. Book Marketing Update

Book Marketing Update

Today’s Book Marketing Update is a day late. But there are some great blog posts referenced below.

Please be sure to read “How to Build an Author Brand.” Authors tend to squirm around the word “branding” but there’s no need. Like David Loy says, “you brand is your reputation.” He nailed it!

Writer Unboxed also published a stellar post as did Writer’s Digest.

Enjoy the posts and your writing.

Book Marketing

How to Build an Author Brand – from Author Media and with David Loy: “Branding is not a logo, a font, or the collection of colors on your website. Your brand is your reputation. It’s how you are known and perceived in the world.”

PR and Marketing Questions Answered Part VI – from Writer Unboxed and by Ann Marie Nieves: “We are finding with so many more books being released than ever before, one of the most important new developments is that the book’s Amazon page is more important than it ever has been.”

Social Media

A Look at the Most Annoying Twitter Marketing Approaches (and How to Avoid Them) – from Social Media Today: I love this blog post! Social Media Today conducted a survey and you know which tactic infuriated people the most? #Using #a #hashtag #too #many #times #in #a #tweet. That happens to be my pet peeve as well. So keep your Twitter hashtags to one or two (only if you really need two) and then stop.

Publishing

Why Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Is Important for Writers – from Writers Digest: “As writers, we have a special responsibility to apply a DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) lens to our work because so much of what we write ends up becoming cultural truth.”

Take a Look at These, Too

How Yiddish Scholars Are Rescuing Women’s Novels From Obscurity – from The New York Times: “Works written decades ago, often by female Jewish immigrants, were dismissed as insignificant or unmarketable. But in the past several years, translators devoted to the literature are making it available to a wider readership.”

Every year, ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools – The Office for Intellectual Freedom is part of the American Library Association: This is a sobering list of books that have been banned.

10 New Books We Recommend This Week – from The New York Times: I want to read “Notes on An Execution.” Which book(s) do you want to read?

Quote of the Week

“You have the tools at your disposal as a writer to shift the paradigm of what gets labeled as important: use all of them to create the change writing, publishing, and our broader society need.” Alida Miranda-Wolff

How I Went from Zero to 6,500 BookBub Followers on BookBub – from BookBub Partners and by Juno Rushdan: “You don’t have to be a USA Today or New York Times bestselling author to build a following on BookBub. Author Websites

How to Speed Up Your Author Website – from Author Media: I love this blog post. You’ll find sound advice here. Basically, use the Genesis theme, watch out for Canva.com downloads (I use TinyPing.com, which reduces the file size of your photos), use a great host, and make sure you’re not using too many plug-ins. But read the post or listen to the podcast to get the full story on this topic.

15 Rules For Advertising Books – by David Gaughran: “I started working in digital advertising way back in 2004 and while it is tricky to generalize about three very different ad platforms – Facebook, Amazon, and BookBub Ads – there are some general rules that I recommend everyone considers, before losing their shirts on book advertising.”

Indie Publishing

Business Musings: New Tools: Indie Publishing (Year in Review 7) – by Kristine Kathryn Rusch: This is a roundup of tools for publishing.
