Just a Shoe Rack

We needed a shoe rack for a spot in our bathroom that always seems to collect shoes. Other than being narrow and having as much capacity as possible, I didn’t have any restrictions on the design. So I decided to have some fun by designing something different and maybe a little weird. Made from African Mahogany and Curly Maple, the rack features four shelves held to the legs via through mortise and tenon joints. The rack tapers upward and the shelves get proportionally narrower as they go up. The wood is doing most of the visual work on this piece and the little details might go unnoticed. I found this to be a fun exercise in joinery and designing on the fly. And thankfully, it actually works quite well as a shoe rack.

Product note: I used to use a lot of epoxy for long glueups. Since working with Titebond, I’ve had an opportunity to sample their hide glue and this just might be my new go-to glue for complex assemblies. Check it out.

Stop Buying Double-Sided Tape!

Double-sided tape has been a constant woodworking companion of mine since the first time I attempted a flush-trimming operation. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the intended job of holding two pieces together. The stuff I used was sold as Turner’s Tape. My main issues were that it often left a sticky residue on the surface and that it would sometimes take wood fibers with it upon removal. Although the bond was tight, I sometimes found that the template would shift under pressure as the thick adhesive layers allowed for a little bit of creep.

A few years ago, I came across this video from Crimson Guitars.  It shows “an old luthier’s trick” using blue tape and CA glue to effectively attach templates with no residue. I initially scoffed at the idea because I was so stuck in the mind-set of using double sided tape. After trying it a few times, I became a big believer and I haven’t purchased double-sided tape since then.

The concept is simple. With a piece of blue tape on both pieces, we can put CA glue on top of the tape and bring the pieces together for a secure bond. The glue bonds to the two pieces of tape and the tape bonds to the wood. While it might not be as strong as double-sided tape, it’s strong enough for the intended application. I also found that this bond was more rigid than the one achieved with double-sided tape and I don’t get the creep I occasionally experienced in the past.

So give it a try. Most of us has everything we need for this already in the shop. Here are some links for the stuff shown in the video:

In-Drawer Knife Block

I checked my mom’s Amazon wish list before Christmas and noticed a nice little bamboo in-drawer knife block. I thought she’s probably appreciate something similar made by her own son so I headed to the shop to make one. It took about two days, but the end result is pretty nice and my mom absolutely loved it. What’s great about this design is you can modify the width to suit your drawer and/or knife collection. Just make the dovetail keys longer and add more ribs.

Please note that because I essentially made a copy of something I saw for sale, I will not be providing plans or templates.
