I have no idea whether or not it will prove to be a false start or not (because I'm still thinking about style) but I've written the first chapter of SLEEPING LATE ON JUDGEMENT DAY.

Dude, what if our whole universe was only, like, a particle of dust on, like, someone's sweater. You know? Totally.

Tomorrow is the first day of school. Praises be! Several hours a day, the government will be responsible for our children. I love the government.

My dear friend Josh is sleeping on the couch now. My children have worn him to a frazzle showing him how pleased they are he's here for a visit. He may not want to visit again, because a man can only take so much joy. And bruising. And shrieking noises.

I've been saying this since Prop. 8 first appeared: you can't vote people's constitutional rights away. That's what it's always been about. "Will of the people" is not enough. Sometimes, the masses are asses.

Here's a very good article about why we shouldn't worry about the upcoming Zombie Invasion. I approve because I think it's more important we spend our time worrying about a REAL menace, static electricity build-up in the human brain...

OMG, I am so doomed. My ten year old daughter has just this moment fallen in love with horses and horseback riding. I was so pleased that I had dodged that one. What a self-satisfied fool I was. Now most of my future income is probably going to wind up going to keep some gigantic creature named Daisy or Brownie in designer hay and expensive leather-wear...

Lovely day seeing our friends' big, beautiful property, getting back just before the obligatory thunder-bluster, and then a very nice dinner with a lot of loud talking and laughing. Sorry nothing much more interesting to report. Oh, we did see an osprey from quite close. And I saved an ant from drowning. I'm expecting to collect on that debt some day. But how will I recognize her...?

Sitting in a hotel bathroom in the middle of the night in Montana, because the sight of a glowing screen will encourage tech-addicted Boy and Girl to stay awake. We're fine. Will report later at more length. Just now, I hear the sound of kids Not Sleeping.

We're off on a short family trip. We'll be in touch from the road. People and dogs will hold down the fort while we're gone. Not to mention the lizard. You can't forget about the lizard.
