Poems I Read in Honour of Lauren Morris' A Tapestry of Flowers
I dedicate my opening three line poem below to the exhibit A Tapestry of Flowers and the artist who created this gift of light, Lauren Morris.
For All the Flowers
There is nowhere that I need to be,only the desireto stand out in the sun.
Sleeping with Books is dedicated to the evocative and dreamy roses in Lauren Morris’ paintings.
Sleeping with Books
Inhaling the exhilaratingbouquet of new printby the golden glowof the reading lamp,I taste little pieces of prose, then fall all the way in,comforted in the texture of pages, soft as sun-warmed Belinda’s Dream roses, inviting the inscription offree verse rhythms in the sleeve.
Highlighters and ink starsbleed wild flowersacross aqua-colouredEgyptian cotton sheets.Water lilies blossomin the sapphire satin blanket, spirals of petals and sepals arising like northern lights over Greenland.Sipping jasmine tea,in bed with my books,my soul unto itself,I speak aloudmy deepest revelationsof passion and awe,how much I lovethe home they are to me.
Inventory was inspired by The White Vase & Pink Roses. The paintings extend such a peaceful invitation to relax and I just be, that I imagined myself in a cafe, next to the vases at that time in mid-June when high school classes are finished and summer school hasn’t yet begun and there is time to breathe.
Inventory
In the quiet of the students having gone,I leave the lights off, invite my soles to restalong the cream and tan patternsof soft wool carpet, take in the changes –deeper crescents and stars in my palms –embrace a slower pace – the swirl of clouds andsway of elegant branches in the summer night –walk in the rustling of wind through green leaves andsit down at the coffee shop, admiring the calm of fading flowerselegantly relaxing over the edgeof a white vase,as new buds blossom above.I inhale the scent of lingering perfumethrough the tender petals of pink roses,no longer having to run to a next appointmentand reflecton the honour it wasto commune with each one of them.
This next one, Autumn Leaves, was inspired in part by the painting, Orange Tulips because the colours remind me of fall and especially by the abstract, Tree.
Autumn Leaves
Russet and plum fingerscurve gently into the sky, spiralling through clouds. Beneath their frosted amber, tiny pearls on slender teal twigshold steady as windmoves through gossamer.
From crow’s vermillion throat,a call through all the shades of grass. The sun speaks patterns of flight on textured elm trunks. Everything eventually holds part of the story.
Bowing below tangerine, lemon and lime, the ivy leaves turn crimson, voices of endurance locked deep inside.Mica dissolves to dust, the richness of my grandfather’s soulascending in the charcoal sky.
Savoury scents of summer woven into prayerby the warmth of the oven –kettle whistles like a chinook across the plains, sweetgrass in the wind.
A couple of abstracts came together for me in the reflection below – Blue Sky, Ocean & Warmth in Lauren Morris’ abstract collection.
Solstice Womb
A splatter of droplets on the last ruby leaf of the Japanese maple,a flutter of tangerine twirlsthrough mists of stillnessabove the blue mountain –
meditative calm of winter womb time, solstice moon a swirl of creation, like clouds of butterfliesswaying in a cradle, the elegance of the flowa call to sanctity within, like Gaia bringing light out of darkness,as a flower holds the sun –
like a babe against its Mamma’s breast,we are children in the night, pausing with the empty trees, to take it all in,breathing the beauty of right here.
Lauren Morris' collection, A Tapestry of Flowers, is on display in the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery in the Jewish Community Centre in Vancouver, and photos are visible at the artist's website: http://www.lmdesignsstudio.com/flower...

A Monk's Message to Activists from Thomas Merton
“There is a pervasive form of contemporary violence to which the idealist most easily succumbs: activism and overwork. The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to violence. The frenzy of our activism neutralizes our work for peace. It destroys our own inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of our own work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.” by Thomas Merton

A Winter Tapestry

In silvered cedar lies the hopethe garden gives to all, inviting realm of peace in the depths of winter soil. The tears and memories and handsof all that went beforelisten for movement in stillness,Earthen darkness spun to ochre like consciousness birthed into light.
Waiting for the sky to take back the rain, for pale blue and forest green, tips of twigs shimmer violet and teal, reminiscent of swift hummingbirds, diving beak first into an aqua pool. Like the burst of flavour in a succulent slice of orange, you almost hear them calling,Yemaya already sketching the nectar to blossom.

Inviting Jesus to Tea
When Jesus enters the circle, dress casual and warm.Allow spaces for his wisdom.Don’t be embarrassed when he appearsat the ceremony.Keep on praying all my relations.Invite him to dance –He is a relation.
When he stays for tea, wear mauve, use the best china, keep on praying, and do rub his feet –He’s probably tiredof what’s been donein his name.
Inviting Jesus to Tea was inspired by an experience in a Medicine Circle on Vancouver Island. We were called upon to invite all our relations, when the spirit of my maternal grandmother brought Jesus with her into the Aboriginal healing ceremony, compelling me to be in unison with all the parts of who I am.
The mixture of capital and small letters in the pronouns relating to Jesus is intentional. There is a sense of reverence woven in with an appreciation for his humanity.
