Deceptive Cadence (Cadence #1)
by Katie Hamstead
Release Date: June 2015
REUTS Publications

Summary from Goodreads:

Cadence Anderson has the perfect definition of happily ever after . . .

Until she doesn't. A freak earthquake shatters her life as surely as her home, taking away everything she holds dear. She wakes in a hospital to find that her beloved husband and infant daughter have been killed, crushed by the earthquake's wrath. Disoriented, injured, and alone, Cadence refuses to accept the loss. So when a man claiming to be her guardian angel appears and offers her a chance to go back in time to save her family, she doesn't need to give it a second thought. She accepts.

Thrust back eleven years, she now faces the ordeal of high school all over again. But this time, she's armed with all the knowledge of her adult life and the determination to do everything better, from preventing the loss of her best friend to avoiding her original, drama-inducing boyfriends. She's focused solely on Austin, her future husband, and is content to bide her time until she meets him again.

But then James Gordon crosses her path. Cadence wants to remain single, but James has his sights set. He is determined to win her over, and he's very hard to resist. As Cadence starts to develop unwanted feelings for him, she realizes he threatens to disrupt everything, changing the future and distracting her from her original goal. Now, Cadence must choose: deny the unpredictable and exciting path James offers her, or stay true to the life she had and is trying desperately to resurrect. Second chances are more complicated than they seem.

Deceptive Cadence combines the soaring emotion of a heartfelt romance with the innovative storytelling of magical realism, crafting a uniquely moving, intricate tale about love and loss that asks: what would you do if given the chance to right all your wrongs?

Diverging Cadence (Cadence #2)by Katie HamsteadRelease Date: August 25th 2015REUTS Publications
Summary from Goodreads:
When Cadence Anderson woke to find her husband and infant daughter had been killed, she thought her life was over. Instead, she was offered a second chance and sent back in time to do it all again.
She’s made the most of this opportunity, repairing her relationship with the best friend she lost the first time, avoiding the romantic mistakes she made originally, and even bringing her family closer together. But she’s also done something she wasn’t planning on—she’s fallen in love with someone other than her future husband.

Stepping onto a plane and flying across country to attend university is the hardest decision she’s had to make. But unless she follows through with it, her future with Austin might never happen. And what becomes of her beautiful baby if she stays with James, the man she was never supposed to love?

The only thing she knows for certain is that she has to see Austin again, and she’s intent on reliving that part of her previous life exactly like she did the first time. Even if that means she has to lie to James to do it. Because, deep down, she can’t quite bring herself to let him go.

Now, past and future are about to collide, and Cadence has to make her final choice—follow the uncertain path of a life with James, or the one she came back to save . . . with Austin.

In this emotional conclusion to the story that began in Deceptive Cadence, relationships will be tested, identities revealed, and the past will overshadow the future, putting the finishing touches on an unforgettable tale of courage, sacrifice, and, above all, love.

Guest Post: Half Dragons and Pitching Comps

Thanks for hosting me on your blog, Katie!
Writing contests!
As some of you may or may not know, my book, Acne, Asthma, And Other Signs You Might Be Half Dragon went from manuscript to honest to goodness book because of a contest. Which is to say, contests have been very good to me, and I have been very lucky. Love them or hate them, writing contests are part of the writing community, but there are definitely things to keep in mind when considering a contest:
First: Do you want to sign/publish/get a critique from the people participating. This one seems like a no brainer, but if you don’t want to work with the people who are judging or handing out prizes, then why are you entering? I’ve seen a number of writers get to the other side of a contest and be disappointed when they got exactly what the contest had announced as the prize. Do some research and think before you hit send.
Second: Writing friends. Most of the real ways to win at a writing contest have nothing to do with winning the contest. I’ve met so many amazing writers while waiting for a contest to reveal who made the agent/editor round. Those kinds of friendships are priceless, and by far, this is the best reason to participate in a writing contest. Writer buddies are a necessity when you’re out in the world of query trenches and submission blues.
Third: feedback. As a writer, it can be hard to get solid feedback on your writing, and one of the best ways is to enter a contest. If you’re feeling really brave, you can then ask your fellow contestants to swap query or first page critiques. This is how Crit Partners are found and made. This part can be really scary, and you might get a lot of people who just do the bare minimum work before hightailing it out of there. That being said, writing contest can really help you find solid feedback on your project, so long as you come to it with open eyes!
And like I said, I entered a contest in June of 2014, one Katie helped to host at Aussie Owned and Read, and that contest got me a publishing contract! And here is the very same book:

Allyson fights acne, not trolls. As an inhaler-carrying member of the asthma society, she just wants to meet the father who turned her mother into a paranoid, move-across-the-nation freak. Now she’s trying to fit in at yet another school, but for the first time in her life, she has a best friend, Beth. When Allyson accidentally spits fire at kidnappers in the mall, she realizes why her father isn’t in the picture: she’s half dragon. Her acne? Emerging scales. Her asthma? The side effects of her dragon’s fire breath. Instead of freaking out, unflappable Beth reveals her own troll heritage and explains how things work with the supernatural creatures hiding within the modern world of smartphones and skyscrapers.
When trolls kidnap a unicorn, Beth gets blamed. Allyson is determined to prove Beth’s innocence and keep her friend off the unicorn chopping block. When they start looking for the kidnappers, they get a call from the last person they expect: Allyson’s father. He tries to warn them off, but he’s been put under a spell by the kidnappers to keep the victims from escaping. Nothing short of death can stop him. Now Allyson must choose between killing the father she’s always dreamed of, or letting her best friend die for a crime she didn’t commit.

Like most mad scientists, Rena Rocford’s early works were largely met with scorn and mockery, but she bided her time. After all, what did her fellow kindergarteners know about literature? From that day forward, Rena kept her writing on the mythical back burner as she pursued more logical goals. Today, crayons. Tomorrow, the world. She moved on to essays and egg drops, then experiments in shady laboratories.
Living as a muggle brought Rena some levels of success, procuring a master’s degree from a well vetted university, but always the stories returned, calling her to the keyboard in the dark of night. Now, having built armies from words, Rena has set her sights on world domination, one book at a time.
From her secret base in the wine country, Rena has enlisted the help of her cats, her loyal dogs, and her family―who can be relied upon to hide the launch codes at a moment’s notice. You can find Rena at her blog, follow her on Twitter, or find her on Facebook. Her debut novel, Acne, Asthma, And Other Signs You Might Be Half Dragon just released with Curiosity Quills. Excerpt:
A man stepped forward, draped in the same off-white, purple-striped toga as the rest of the room. A senator of Rome, a nobleman. My brainstem tat spit out the answer into my mind before the question fully formed—Tillius Cimber. My heart climbed into my throat, lungs struggling with oxygen. It was happening.“You were going to consider my petition to return my brother from exile,” he said, too loudly. The words vibrated on the taught strands of anxiety in the air, bounding off the stone walls and crashing into my ears, easily translated by my tattoo. It was hard not to wince, but that would shake my face. I’d been distracted enough today, wandering into the portico, and my tendency to be sidetracked did not endear me to the overseers or our Elders. My family had endured enough disgrace in the past few years without my adding to it by being a space cadet. I was two Level-1 sanctions away from the Elders notifying my parents. After what happened with my brother, they might die from shame. “I’m still considering it,” Caesar replied, his tone dismissive. My lungs ached with unspent air. They struggled to call out, to warn him. Policy forbade any interaction, of course, and the brainstem tat did more than provide me with handy dandy information—it insisted I follow contemporary custom. It saved me a ton of studying but the downside meant occasionally losing control of my own limbs. It had forced me into an absurd curtsey on more than one occasion, once nearly toppling my giant wig right onto Marie Antoinette’s feet at a ball. There was no way to change the scene that began to unfold in front of us, anyway. No way to nudge it a different direction without setting off unknown effects that might reach all the way to Genesis in 2560. I squeezed Analeigh’s hand tighter as Caesar shook off Cimber. He barely took a step before another senator, Casca, stabbed him square in the neck, the blade sinking all the way to the hilt. The almost comical surprise on his face slid quickly toward resignation as Brutus attacked him next, his blade strong and true as it sunk into his old friend’s heart. The betrayal in Caesar’s eyes sent a sizzling chill down my spine but no words passed his lips. He did not single Brutus out as more important than the others, despite the infamous line in Shakespeare’s version of these tragic events. In fact, though he struggled and fought, Gaius Julius Caesar spoke not one more word as nearly sixty grown men surrounded him with daggers, each intent on taking their part of the blame—or the credit—by plunging their own weapon into flesh. Sarah’s face turned pale, chalky, as the scene descended into a melee. Men stabbed each other instead of their target. Their leather shoes slipped in crimson puddles dotting the floor, more than one of them slipped, and Caesear disappeared inside a crowd of thrusting blades. The coppery, slick odor of spilled blood clogged the air, coated my tongue. I swallowed, and it stuck to my throat. It seemed like it went on forever, but in reality, he bled out in mere minutes. Just a man, after all. Not a god.

Blog Tour: Society’s Most Scandalous Viscount by Anabelle Bryant

Title: Society’s Most Scandalous ViscountAuthor: Annabelle BryantGenre: Historical RomanceWhen rules are made to be broken…Viscount Kellaway may sound like a gentleman, but he doesn’t act like one. As far as Kell is concerned, drink, women and the wrong side of the law are much more attractive indulgences than could be found in polite society – much to the scandal of the ton. With all of Brighton’s women to choose from, Kell has never settled for one – and his devilish good looks have meant he’s never had to. But when he spies Angelica Curtis walking on the beach by moonlight, the living vision of a familiar dream, all that changes.Suddenly, Kell finds himself craving the touch of a single woman…and it just so happens that the woman in question won’t have him! But if Kell’s bad ways have taught him anything, it’s that nothing is truly out of bounds…
Society’s Most Scandalous Viscount is the story of Kellaway, a pirate-viscount with a distressing past, and Angelica, an earl’s daughter with a dismal future. Throughout the novel Kell finds he is often chasing Angelica down, finding her, losing her and then finding her again, because he’s determined to have her and he always gets what he wants. My favorite scene occurs near the end of chapter 18. Kell has chased Angelica through the dark alleys of London and when he finally catches her, his first action is a long, deep kiss…then he offers to take her home in his carriage. But their shared kiss in the carriage quickly turns into much more…one of the sexiest scenes I’ve written to date.I loved creating Kell as a pirate-viscount because it allowed me to blur the lines of aristocratic etiquette. He breaks rules, crosses boundaries and doesn’t have a care. He is perfectly matched with Angelica and together their story is my sexiest Regency yet.

Author BioAnabelle began reading at age three and never stopped.  Her passion for reading soon turned into a passion for writing and an author was born.  Happy to grab a suitcase if it ensures a new adventure, Anabelle finds endless inspiration in travel, especially imaginary jaunts into Regency England, a far cry from her home in New Jersey.  Instead, her clever characters live out her daydreams because really, who wouldn't want to dance with a handsome duke or kiss a wicked earl?
Though teaching keeps her grounded, photography, running and writing, counterbalance her wanderlust.  Often found with her nose in a book, Anabelle earned her Master's Degree and is completing her Doctorate Degree in education.  Thrilled to be an author for Harlequin's Carina line, Anabelle's historical romances are character driven.  She strives to provide a heartfelt connection between her hero, heroine, and the reader, believing the emotional journey on the path to true love is the most important bond.  Clever secondary characters and lively conversation keep the pages turning.
Anabelle knows sometimes life doesn't provide a happily ever after, but her novels always do.  She enjoys talking with her fans.  Follow her on Facebook for the latest news concerning her upcoming novels. Dan meets a mysterious woman named Rose who says he’s not alone. Like him, she’s dead and possesses the bodies of awful people. Unlike him, she doesn’t care what they’ve done, and she hides a secret shame.

Through Rose, Dan learns there are others like them, living in the shadows, hopping blissfully from ride to ride chasing excitement and chemical highs. For them, morality doesn’t matter, virtue is negotiable, and consequence has a three week expiration date.

They call themselves “hoppers.”

My Thoughts:
If you've been following my for a while, you'll know that I loved books 1 and 2 of this series. Like seriously LOVED from page one. This book is no different.

Dan Jenkins is one of those characters who you can't help but love. He's quirky, hopelessly flawed, has a wicked sense of humor, and a strong moral code. I think that's what made me love him the most in the first two books; that he always wanted to do the right thing, even when he was dealing with seriously evil bad guys that he pretty much had to kill or they'd go on being evil.
Hopper House takes a new turn for Dan's afterlife experience when he discovers he's not the only person like him jumping from body to body. And Rose wants him to stay that way. Despite her efforts, he finds himself cornered by a new nemesis, one who knows all about his "condition" and how to blackmail him. But in typical Dan style, he's not going to give in without doing his best to make the bad guy pay.

I could rant and rave about this book until the cows come home. It's one of those books I couldn't put down, even when I really needed to. The character of Dan really does make this story. He makes these ugly situation amusing and light, and these horrible so confused and thrown of guard by his quirky unpredictability. But he has a big heart, and I'm so glad that's what comes through in the end, even when the minister is a nut job, and the other hoppers are also kind of crazy.

I'm pretty sad the series is over... at least it definitely feels like it wrapped up nicely. If there are more books, this little bit of sadness I get when finishing a really good book series will go away. Seriously, it's like I turned that last page and felt like I'd lost a friend.

While I would never call The Jenkins Cycle books clean reads, they definitely are riveting page turners I'd recommend to anyone who's not overly sensitive and loves a great, exciting, and unique adventure with an unforgettable hero.
