~~SUMMARY~~A man of ability and ambition, Tuirgeis Erlingrson has nurtured the desire to carve a place of leadership for himself on the Green Island, Éire, that he has raided multiple times. After the death of his wife in Nordweg, he takes his surviving son to Éire. Having connections with his adopted brother, Cowan, and Agnarr, his former countryman, Tuirgeis feels he has the support he needs to make his claims strong.Agnarr is torn. His promise to Aislinn to remain with her on Éire is still in force, and he resists Tuirgeis’s requests to join the conquering forces from Nordweg. He desires above all things to maintain a safe home for his wife and children in Dal Fíatach. Charis encourages Cowan to do the same, though this makes for tense moments between them. EDK-3D-Open-Book-2 After initial disastrous attempts to achieve his ambition, Tuirgeis comes to learn that there is more to claiming a kingship than merely overpowering the locals. Tuirgeis finds himself at odds with the very people he had hoped would reinforce him. In addition, he wants to establish his father-line. He has one son; he wants another to be born of Éire. Will the woman of his choice accept and support him?At length, Agnarr and Aislinn—though she is heavy with child—sail with Cowan and Charis to join Tuirgeis as he battles over one final summer to attain the High Kingship of the island.Tuirgeis knows he doesn’t have long to make his claims; the Danes are coming in greater numbers than before. As he wins men of Éire to his cause, he has to maintain the relationships he has already fostered with Agnarr and Cowan. Charis finds that her Otherworldly gifts are needed by a man she considers her enemy.
~~EXCERPT~~It was dark in the langhús, save for the glowing of the coals banked in the fire ring. Agnarr enjoyed his wife’s responsiveness to him, and when they made love, he never forgot to thank his new God for letting her live through the births of the children their bodies made together. Before the sun crept under the door and through the shutters over the new windows, they were smiling and silent and relishing the moments—he knew there would only be moments—before the children stirred in the bench-bed they shared. Later, as their son and daughter began shifting restlessly prior to awakening, Agnarr sat up and blew out a breath. “Wife.” “Yes, husband?” She joined him, finding his hand with hers in the shadowy enclosure of their private area.
EDK-3D-Paperback-1“We need to be ready. You need to be ready. You and the children.” She sighed and shifted on the blankets so that she was looking directly at him. As was her habit, she continued to touch him with her fingers as she spoke. “I can fight. And you gave Dow a real knife at the Christ Mass.” Discomfort tightened his stomach as he shook his head. “You need to be able to escape, just in case.” He knew far too well what would happen if someone found his attractive wife. Someone whom he didn’t know. Someone who would find her dark hair appealing and the tatú on her cheek mysterious and alluring. Someone who would want to take her as their leman, as he had once taken Charis. Someone who might take his son as a slave. Jaw tightening in anger, he shook his head again. Hard. “You know what can happen to you.” Her eyes were on his face, and he met their steady gaze. “And the children. You need to be able to get away. We should find a way to make you safe.”

~GUEST POST BY DIANE RINELLA~The Critical (yet it doesn’t mean squat) First Draft.a.k.a. Simple advice for those who wish to write.By Diane Rinella
How can something be important yet not mean much? If you have ever written a book, you totally understand the title of this piece.
When I started writing Something To Dream On, I knew where I wanted it to end up, but how to get there was elusive. No matter what I wrote, it sounded wrong, lame, and just plain horrible.
First drafts are the hardest, most intimidating part of writing. Frankly, anyone who thinks books are cranked out beautifully on the first try has watched too many episodes of Castle. Writers struggle. Let me tell ya, getting that first draft out is a killer! Sometimes you struggle from the beginning. Other times the story flows and all is great until you smack into a brick wall coated in Crazy Glue and get stuck. Seriously, I’ve had thirty-three thousand words fly out in a few days before I shut down and could not pound out another word for weeks.
Why does this happen? It is because we all hit a point where what we are writing “sounds stupid” to us. Sometimes that feeling hits a few chapters in. Other times it hits during the opening sentence. Just know that it is going to hit and you have to ignore the inner voice that tells you that what you are writing is rubbish. The writing isn’t bad; it is unpolished. Writing is like taking a big lot of rock hard dirt and deciding to plant a garden. First you have to shovel in a whole bunch of nutrients and manure, and then you start planting and watering. Growing concepts from the seeds in your mind and helping them to flourish takes nurturing.
Think of the first draft as bringing in the dirt. Then plant all the seeds that will add mystery and intrigue. Let everything sprout and grow (the second draft), and then come in with some clippers and start shaping the bushes and pulling the weeds (the third draft.) Just like any beautiful garden, writing takes time. It’s hard not to give up when your words do not meet your expectations, but remember that much like manure, first drafts stink. Focus on getting the words down, develop the basic story, and then add all the things that will make it beautiful.

BLOG TOUR & INTERVIEW/GIVEAWAY: Indulgence by Jeanne McDonald

Indulgenceby: Jeanne McDonaldGenre: Erotica/Erotic RomanceRelease date: January 4, 2015One night of indulging in her carnal nature will unlock a world of mystery and desire she never dreamed existed.

A year has passed since Addison George was left at the altar after her husband-to-be announced he was gay.  Still friends despite what happened, she secretly harbors hope that all of this was a phase and he will come crawling back to her.  That dream is shattered when he announces that he’s engaged to the man he left her for.
Spiraling out of control, Addison agrees to accompany her best friend to the sex party of the year. Hosted by world-renowned erotic romance author, Sebastian Hawk, exposed anonymity is the name of the game.  The rules are simple: all guests are required to remain nude for the duration of the event, except for a mask to hide one’s identity, and everyone must partake in at least one salacious delight.

Out of her sexual league, Addison spends the evening with a certain clothed employee who explains to her the world in which the enigmatic author lives.  While she wishes to understand more about the strange novelist, Addison can’t help but feel drawn to the handsome and mysterious employee who has introduced her to the sensual realm of Indulgence.

Lost in a world of secrets and passion, Addison will unmask the man behind the mystery while exploring her carnal nature.  Through it all, she’ll discover that not everything is as it seems, and to never judge a book solely by its cover.

Jeanne McDonald began telling stories at the ripe young age of five, when her mother considered the truth to be a lie due to her extensive embellishment to the retelling of an event.  She wrote her first short story when she was twelve years old, and at the age of sixteen she tried her hand at poetry.  She reconnected with her love for writing in 2010 thanks to the encouragement of a dear friend.

Her passions include a "mild" Starbucks addiction, music, reading, quotes, movies, and romance.  When she's not spending time with her family, she can be found reading, writing, chatting with her friends or diligently working toward her bachelor's degree in Literature.  A proud Texan, Jeanne currently resides in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with her family.

I extended my hand out to her, almost afraid she might bite it off.  She wrapped the red ribbon around my wrist, prepared to clasp it together with an adhesive strip.  “You are to wear your card at all times.  In each room, you will find plenty of writing, utensils along with protection.  For every partner you engage in activities with tonight, you’re required to notate their name on this card.  Tomorrow morning, you will hand this back in and we will return your license to you.  Is that clear?”My jaw nearly hit the floor.  Not that I thought keeping track of our partners was a bad idea, because it was quite brilliant, but having some stranger sifting through my sex partners left me unsettled.  My crush on Sebastian Hawk was a moot point.  It was bad enough he had access to everything else, including my blood type.  This was my private affair, and I wanted it to remain that way.I ripped my arm back before the clasp completely closed, leaving the card in scary lady’s hands.  “Excuse me, but I wish to keep my card.  It’s no one else’s business who I fuck but my own.”“Addison,” Amber warned me.I jerked my head up, looking at Amber.  “No.  This is ludicrous,” I argued.  “Who gives him the right to know who I fuck or not?”“It’s no big deal.  Just take the card,” she hissed.I might’ve been out my comfort zone, but I also wasn’t the type of person who’d back down when I felt something wasn’t right.  I had no qualms in speaking my mind.  It might’ve gotten me in trouble more times than not, but I figured if I didn’t defend myself, who would?“No.  You said this was about freedom, about taking chances, but there are some things I don’t take chances with.  I refuse to allow…”Out of no where, a man appeared behind the desk.  His light, blue-eyed gaze washed over me, causing every follicle on my skin to stand on end.  My body tingled with excitement.  All I could do was stare at him.  He was the epitome of a god.  Skin, lightly kissed by the sun.  Hair, the color of pale gold.  He was tall but the air around him made him appear taller.  The tip of his tongue darted out over his lips, and I had the sudden urge to reach out and capture it between my teeth.  My eyes drifted down, catching the sight of a hard, lean body.  His hands tucked away in his pockets, pulling his suit jacket away from his hips.  When I realized I was staring at his crotch, I quickly shifted my eyes to meet his.  Bad move.  Once locked in his sights, I was done for.“Sebastian Hawk,” I rasped.

One's dream can be a funny thing. A collection of random thoughts. A compilation of your deepest fears and desires. A sign? Most days, Marissa leaves dream interpretation to the psychologists and psychics, but when her subconscious churns out a vision of her first love so real it jars her from her sleep, she can't help but wish she knew what it meant. Or at the very least, what the lingering feelings still present long after she's awake, mean.Drew isn't looking for signs. Mostly, he's just trying to avoid them. Like the street sign that marks the turn to her old house. Or the stop sign at the edge of town, reminding him where he belongs and what else is out there. Her. Marissa. She's out there. But that doesn't matter anymore.Until...

Drew’s shoulders raised and his arms moved out ever so slightly, but he kept his hands safely tucked away in his pockets. “I'm glad you came over.”I wasn’t practicing the same restraint. I reached out and affectionately squeezed his arm. “Me too. I feel better having talked about some of this stuff.”His eyes darted back and forth between my hand on him and my face. “Hey, you want to go sit out on the deck? It's nice out tonight.”“Okay.” It was an abrupt change in topic, but maybe it was best not to dwell on the past any longer now that it had been resolved as much as it would probably ever be. Although it still left me with the lingering question, ‘Where did we go from here?’I followed him out back to a huge deck furnished with a hammock and several chairs. I went straight for the hammock and climbed in while Drew pulled up one of the chairs to sit beside me.“I can't believe you still have this thing. I used to love laying out here.” I swayed back and forth, completely cocooned in the softly weathered linen, staring out at the starlit sky.Drew’s mouth gave way to his half-smile. “I remember.”I kept swinging back and forth, feeling more content than I could remember feeling in a long time. “Drew. How come you never told me you bought that land?”He exhaled loudly, leaning back in his seat and kicking out his legs. “I was going to. Just never got around to it, I guess. I mean, at first I was just going to see if the bank would even give me another loan since my dad had just helped me buy this place. I didn't really think they'd say yes, but they did.” He moved his hand in the air like he’d thought they were nuts. “So, I made an offer. I went pretty low and I never thought they'd accept.” His hand went up again, signaling another surprise. “But they did and, next thing I knew, we closed on it and I owned ten acres of pasture, complete with a fishing pond.”“Why did you even want it?” He was on a roll already and I was determined to get him to spell out every last detail regarding the inner workings of his brain if I could.Staring out into the night, a distant look came over his face, like he was remembering the whole thing. “When I saw the for sale sign it sort of set this crazy plan I had into motion.” He grinned. A dopey, happy grin. “I could just picture myself buying it and, when the time was right, taking you there, getting down on one knee.” He turned to face me. “You know the drill.”I nearly flipped out of the hammock. “You were going to ask me to marry you?”He nodded. Apparently he saw no reason to hold back anything at this point. “That was the plan.”

Dog Lover who likes her pastries full of cream and sugar….oh…and I write some ;-) Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful 5 year old little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that’s the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess – just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name…If I wasn’t a writer, I would work on a horse ranch – I’m an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I’m going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate…or coffee…if you bring me both, I’ll probably love you forever.A gypsy at heart, I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children’s Lit to Thrillers. I happily reside in sunny Florida (for now) and always enjoy hearing from fellow readers!!

~~SUMMARY~~
Carly Daniels knows what it is to suffer loss. She knows what it is to sacrifice. In the two years since a pandemic virus—known only as the Infection—decimated humanity, she’s made choices she never could have imagined. She’s condoned violence in the name of peace and done the unthinkable in the name of mercy. But with Justin at her side, she’s also learned there’s nothing she can’t face and nothing she wouldn’t do to protect those she loves. But now another threat has arrived in the form of a uniformed man driving an army truck, claiming to represent the remnant of the United States military. Someone has set their sights on their community . . . and on Justin. The struggle to defend their little homeland is far from over, and the visitors may have brought more danger with them than just their weapons. The shadows are closing in. Carly has to find out whether she has the strength to stand on her own when all of her support has fallen away. What remains when the shadows have gone?
~~EXCERPT~~
“There’s other news,” Justin said. “We made contact with a man driving an army truck.”“The army?”“Someone with the army?”“There’s an army?”“Whose army?” Pete’s voice rang above the excited babble.“That’s the right question,” Justin said. “Whose army? He might have been wearing a uniform and claiming affiliation, but I have my doubts.”“He claimed to be from the US Army?”“Claimed,” Justin said, stressing the word hard. “And his claim had a few inconsistencies. I was in the Army, and I know. Whatever this guy is a part of, it’s not the army as we knew it.”“What did he want?”“Said he was out scouting and saw the smoke. He agreed to leave a message outside of Clayton if his people want to get in contact with us again. And I would imagine they will.”
Shadows-Have-Gone-3D-Paperback-eReader “Last thing we need is another fight,” Grady said. He took off his hat and wiped the sweat from his forehead. “You think they know where we are?”“General area. We wouldn’t be that hard to find if someone was really searching for us. If they’re really army, then yes, they know exactly where we are as we speak. But as I said, I have my doubts.”“Think it will come to a fight?” Pete asked.Justin scratched his chin. “I really can’t say. What I can say is that we always need to be prepared for it, prepared to defend what is ours.”“What if they really are the army? Would we be America again?”“Wait. When did we stop being America?”“America is dead.” This came from David, his voice as blunt as a dropped stone. “We all saw it die two years ago. I don’t know what we are now, but the Constitution sure ain’t in effect anymore. There’s no government. There’s no social contract holding us together. That’s what America was, you know—a collective agreement of the people. Now we’re just—” He sliced a hand through the air.“If the army is still active, that would mean there is a government, which would make this still America,” Grady said. “They’d be the government’s representatives, establishing order.”Justin shook his head. “You’re thinking way too far ahead. Even if they are US Army—and that’s a very big if—they don’t have control of the whole country. There is no centralized government, no law enforcement. They’re not coming to rescue us.”

As I slip quietly out of the suite and rush toward the elevator, I can’t deny I’m feeling a little better about Vegas.

That is, until the elevator doors open.

Standing there, leaning against the stainless steel wall with a cocky smile on his face, is the one person I really didn’t want to see this weekend.

With a miserable groan, I step inside the elevator and furiously stab the button.

“Are you following me, Summers?”

“I’d follow your dimples anywhere, York.”

Ethan Summers is infuriatingly charming and handsome. Both assets have proven to be beneficial to his career and detrimental to mine.

“Well, these dimples just lifted Bradley Jones’ credit card numbers.”

“Impressive. Although, one might argue that a more superior con artist would be capable of accomplishing such a feat without showing a little skin. Really, Jenna, I’m disappointed.”

He rarely calls me by my first name. Last names have always been our thing.

“Were you watching me?”

“Every heterosexual man in the casino was watching your little performance. Nice legs, by the way.”

Crap.

“Not good,” I mutter.

“No, but I enjoyed it.”

Ethan grins as the elevator doors open. I don’t protest when he grabs me by the elbow and leads me toward the nearest exit. It’s not brightly lit, but there’s a very nice bouncer that Ethan greets by name who allows us to walk right out the door and into the starry Nevada night. He doesn’t let go of my arm as we hurry toward a black SUV.

“Why are you helping me?”

“You drugged a millionaire and stole his credit card info. I think it’s best we get you out of town.”

That doesn’t really answer my question, but I can’t argue with his logic.

Ethan opens the passenger door and helps me inside.

“Nice stilettos.”

I glare at him, and he shoots me a sexy smile before slamming my door.

It’s really too bad that I hate his guts.

Ethan Summers and I have crossed paths many times throughout the past couple years. It’s unavoidable, considering we’re two of the finest criminal minds in the world.

That’s what the news says, anyway.

“Let me guess,” Ethan says as he pulls the SUV out onto the highway. “You used Rohypnol on Jones?”

I roll my eyes. “I’m a thief, not a sexual predator.”

“Well, you obviously slipped something into his drink.”

“Sleeping pill.”

Ethan hums his disapproval. I can’t argue with him. Slipping Bradley a sedative is so amateur.

“I was desperate. The entire weekend has been a complete waste of time. When did the Viper install dome cams?”

“A few weeks ago. The casino’s hosting the U.S. Poker Championship next month. Ceiling cams are a requirement.”

“Super.”

“I know.”

“So, if you knew about the cameras, what were you doing at the casino?”

“Let’s just say a little birdie told me you were hitting the Viper tonight. I had a feeling you might need my assistance.”

“So you’ve been talking to Abby.”

He remains silent and keeps his eyes trained on the freeway, giving me the chance to study his profile. Ethan has a mop of unruly dark hair and deep blue eyes that make most girls go weak in the knees.

Not this girl. Nope.

“Like what you see?”

My face heats. I hate when he catches me ogling him.

“You’re an ass.”

He laughs. “Someday, Jenna, you’re going to stop fighting this attraction between us. I’m really looking forward to that.”

RELEASE BLITZ: Protective Hearts by D.S. Williams

After being kidnapped by the Chicago Heart Ripper, Finn O'Flaherty is his only surviving victim.
Rescued by her brother, Finn suffers heartache in the aftermath as she struggles to come to terms with what happened and battles the amnesia that prevents her from identifying the serial killer.
Caleb Sheppard is determined to protect Finn out of respect and a sense of duty towards his friend's younger sister. He suspects there is more to the prolific serial killer than meets the eye, and one question haunts him: Why was Finn kept, and not killed?
It's a race against time to retrieve Finn's memories, keep her out of the Ripper's clutches, and discover the secrets of his identity.
What Finn doesn't realize, is that Caleb and his family are hiding secrets of their own – some of which Finn may not be able to accept.

He stared at the finger of whisky
Glowing golden amber
in the bottom of the glass.
He focused on
his heart, his love, the link to her.
Finnola. Where are you?
“Finn! It’s okay. You’re safe now. He can’t hurt you anymore.”
Shep’s anxious voice reached me and I returned to present day in a rush, found myself wrapped firmly in his arms. I inhaled raggedly, my cheeks wet with tears.
Shep drew away, cupping his hands against my jaw tenderly. “It’s okay. It’s over now, baby.” He stroked his thumbs across my cheeks, brushing the tears away and fury was evident in his startling green eyes. “I won’t let him hurt you again, Finn. Not ever again.”
I drew a shuddering breath, inhaling the rich male scent of Shep’s skin, wondering abstractly what cologne he wore. Whatever it was, I loved it. A subtle mix of pine and bergamot, the aroma calmed me, soothed away the horror of what I’d heard and imagined in the darkness.
“I promise you. I won’t let him get to you. I swear I’ll protect you,” Shep said huskily, still brushing tears from my cheeks.
For a long moment, I watched him, welcoming the calm assurances he offered. Shep returned my gaze and the fury in his eyes faded, replaced with another emotion I couldn’t grasp. Inhaling another shaky breath, I watched Shep swallow deeply, his attention dropping from my eyes to my lips.
Shep suddenly cursed, turning away abruptly, and placing the kitchen bench between us. “Bad idea,” he muttered. “Drink your coffee, kitten. I’m heading up for a shower.”
I obediently picked up the coffee mug, holding it between my hands as both my mind and senses reeled. What just happened? For one second, I’d thought Shep was considered kissing me; in fact, I was positive the thought crossed his mind. Why did he pull away?
Shep strode away, leaving me alone with my tangled thoughts. With a sigh, I got up and went in search of something to eat, pushing the thought of Caleb Sheppard firmly to the back of my mind.
By the time I’d located a box of pop tarts and placed two in the toaster, I was convinced the moment with Shep was a figment of an overly stressed mind. I was pouring a second coffee when I heard a car in the drive, announcing Shelby and Taylor’s arrival.
Shelby greeted me with a hug and glanced around the dilapidated kitchen with unconcealed disgust. “It’s not too late, you know. You can still come back to Chicago with us,” she offered, a tiny crease wrinkling her smooth brow. “Ash can’t keep you here in Hicksville, if you don’t want to stay.”
“I’m fine,” I reassured her. “I like it here.” Catching the cynical roll of Shelby’s eyes, I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “I want to stay, Shel. I feel safer here.”
It was true, even if Shelby didn’t believe me. I couldn’t go home; the killer knew where I lived. After being released from hospital, I’d given up the lease on my apartment. Although living there had been wonderful, I would never feel safe there again.
After the kidnapping, I’d stayed with Shelby’s parents, who welcomed me with open arms and warm hearts. It was exactly what I needed, Shelby’s parents had always treated me as a second daughter, and their love, and support, was vital in the first few dreadful weeks after Bryan’s death. Ash wasn’t convinced of my safety in their suburban home however, insisting on this move to Massachusetts. Even Chicago’s finest wouldn’t know where I was and Ash had taken a lot of heat for his decision. I was the only living witness to the Ripper’s murderous activities—if they caught him, my testimony would ensure a death sentence.
If I could remember enough to be any help.
“I want you close to us, Finn,” Shelby persisted. “If he finds out where you are, you haven’t got any protection out here! There isn’t even a phone for Christ’s sake!”
“She’s got a cell,” Ash countered, walking into the kitchen. “She’ll be in constant contact with Shep and me.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead and gave me a reassuring squeeze as he met Shelby’s gaze. “Trust me, Shelby. This is the safest option for Finn right now.”
“Finn needs her friends around her!” Shelby argued vehemently, crossing her arms over her chest. “She’s fragile right now, you know that Ash! How can she possibly be comfortable out here alone?”
“She’s going to be fine. We’ve talked about it and Finn and I agree this is the smartest option,” Ash responded calmly. “You need to trust me on this, Shelby. Having her stay in Chicago is dangerous. We haven’t even got a handle on the Ripper’s identity.”
“So leaving her to fend for herself is the sensible idea? You aren’t giving me much confidence in the abilities of Chicago’s finest!”
“You’re beginning to piss me off, Shelby,” Ash growled. “Finn knows she’s secure here. There’s a security system, she’ll be in constant contact with me, and if there’s the slightest sign of trouble, I’ll have the Rockport Deputies on the doorstep, faster than you can take a breath.”
“I’m pissing you off?” Shelby said incredulously. “This isn’t about you, Ash! Finn needs to be with people she knows!”
“Could we stop talking about Finn like she isn’t even here?” I muttered miserably. Shrugging free from Ash’s arm, I pulled the pop tarts from the toaster and threw them onto a plate. “When did this become a situation in which I have absolutely no control?”
“When you were taken by the Ripper, kitten.”
Shep stood in the entrance, his dark hair damp from the shower. He gazed at me calmly, his expression impassive and for a long moment I stared at him, frustrated by what I’d lost. My life had been whole, complete before this happened. I’d been happy and confident, in charge of my own decisions. Having that control taken away was a bitter pill to swallow and I stalked from the kitchen, stomping through the sun porch and onto the balcony. I slammed the door behind me and was glad of it, wanted the others to know how angry I was.
The temperature was cool, the sky overcast despite it being the middle of summer. A vigorous breeze blew hair around my face as I leaned on the handrail, watching water crashing onto the rocks below. The house stood at the edge of the cliff, looking out across the rolling Atlantic. The smell of seawater reached my nostrils and I inhaled deeply, calmed by the rugged tranquility of the landscape. On both sides of the house, the forest almost touched the edges of the cliff, leaving a narrow pathway that snaked along the rocks. Majestic pines stood tall and thick, making it possible to believe this was the only inhabited building on earth.
Rebel crept up beside me, dropping to his haunches by my leg. Since waking this morning, he’d been constantly at my side, and I welcomed his quiet company. Rubbing a hand idly across his head, I found his fur was smooth and silky beneath my fingers. “I wish they would go away and leave us alone,” I told the wolf as I scratched behind his ears, “they’re all gonna drive me nuts.”
“You really mean that?”
Startled by the sound of Shep’s deep voice, I whirled around to face him. “Stop creeping up on me!” I snapped angrily.
Shep shrugged indifferently, leaning against the weathered railing beside me. “Sorry, kitten. Wanted to check if you were okay.”
“I’m fine,” I muttered. I’d assumed Shelby would come search me out and Shep’s sudden appearance had me unbalanced. “And stop calling me kitten.”
Shep shifted against the railing to face me, his green eyes intent. “I’ve always called you kitten.”
I crossed my arms against my chest. “Yeah, well you can cut it out. I’m not your damn kitten.”
“No,” he retorted mildly. “When you’re in a mood like this, you’re more like a tiger.”
“Go away, Shep.”
He reached into the pocket of his shirt, pulling out a packet of cigarettes and lit one, inhaling deeply. “Why are you so angry with me, Finn?”
“I thought you gave up smoking?” I retorted sharply, watching as he blew perfect smoke rings, which dissipated rapidly in the brisk breeze.
“I did. Having you kidnapped by the Ripper tested my resolve.”
“Why the hell would you care?”
Shep’s eyes darkened and he scowled. “Of course I care, Finn.”
“Well you can relax, I’m perfectly fine. Go back to Chicago and whichever bimbo you’re banging currently.”
Shep dragged on the cigarette as he considered my words. “Sounds a bit like jealousy to me, kitten.”
I turned and stalked along the balcony to escape him. The last thing I needed was an argument with Shep, which skirted this close to personal issues. I’d kept my feelings secreted away, but the earlier moment inside the house, combined with shredded nerves was making me careless.
Instead of taking the hint, Shep followed to where I stood gazing across the ocean. “Go away, Shep. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“I need to teach you the commands for Rebel.”
With an exasperated sigh, I turned around, searching his eyes for the truth. “Were you going to kiss me this morning?” I questioned bluntly.
For almost a minute, I thought he wouldn’t answer, but he inhaled heavily and his expression softened. “I thought about it,” he admitted huskily.
“But it’s a bad idea?”
His gaze flickered across to the crashing waves, avoiding eye contact. “Yeah. It’s a lousy idea.”

~~EXCERPT~~For the first time since he had been brought in the clinic, Sarah got a good, long look at him. She noted the perfect blond hair that fell on the side of his face—matted but still perfect. His features were rather forbidding, even in his unconscious state. The defined jawline framed well-proportioned lips that were pale and parted slightly. The suggestion of dimples on either cheek made her ache to see him smile. Then there were the long, dark eyelashes and the contoured nose, all coming together to create a striking, attractive package that kept her eyes glued to his face. Her heart began to race. What is wrong with me? Shaking off another wave of nausea, Sarah closed her eyes and concentrated on breathing. Her knees weakened underneath her, but she kept on inhaling and exhaling. A few more minutes and it would be over.In her short life, Sarah hadn’t met a man who evoked the well–documented “butterflies-in-the-stomach” phenomenon. Now here she was, staring at a complete stranger with her heart banging against her chest in a frenzy. This man was just too perfect, too beautiful almost. She was even gladder she’d managed to keep him alive. He’d make a woman happy someday, if he hadn’t already. Instinct made her eyes travel to the man’s ring finger, and her heart skipped when she found it bare.
