A burly man yelled, “I’ve got one,” and lunged at her. One gauntlet-covered hand reached out as she leapt away. 
Who was he? Why was he chasing her? A dogcatcher? She’d taken a self-defense class in college but in dog form she had no hands to hit, no fingers to poke eyes, and no knees to kick vital parts. If this man were truly a dog catcher, she wished she could change into her human form. He’d realize his mistake and leave the Shipsfeather Public Library’s Children’s Librarian alone. If she uttered even one word, he’d freak out and want even more to catch a talking dog.
She plunged behind an evergreen tree. Stick held high, the man came right at her. Gathering her back legs under her, she pushed off, flying between his legs. Surprised, he fell on his backside. She ran towards the front of the library, hoping to reach the hidden entrance before the big guy caught her. Once inside she’d be safe. The dog-shifters would protect her.
As soon as her toes touched the sidewalk she galloped toward the impressive domed Shipsfeather Public Library building, which once had been a shapeshifting academy and still housed the dog-shifters and their school and library in the lower levels. She’d been the upstairs public library’s children’s librarian for five years, telling stories and decorating bulletin boards before she ever dreamed of turning into a dog.
She heard the bulky man breathing hard behind her. Then a tall thin man in a padded coat rushed at her with a huge butterfly net, his voice, gruffer and louder called, “Get ‘er, Elwood. She’d be one of them.”
Surrounded, she whirled to face the second man, bared her teeth, and tried to growl with menace. A frightened white Greyhound with her tail curled under her body until it touched her throat was not a very convincing threat. Elwood threw himself on top of her and held her down.
She gagged at his pizza breath and fought to wiggle loose, just as a third dogcatcher, a woman, opened the rear door of a white van and called to the men, “Throw her in here!”

As the door closed behind him, his brow wrinkled and he blinked. Instead of the terrifying werewolf he’d expected, a petite young woman peered at him over reading glasses.
His eyes scanned the office the size of most New York bistros, black leather except for the red carpetunder the ebony desk and book-lined walls. Behind the desk a window framed a classic New York skyline. He squinted in the midafternoon light to see the woman who leaned over a messy pile of papers. Whoever she was, she was not Dominika Romano. Perhaps a secretary or gofer, but not the most powerful woman in a city run by powerful women.
The woman stood, her delicate body draped in a black dress, a white cardigan pulled over her shoulders.
He stepped closer, “I’m looking for Ms. Romano,” and noticed exotic periwinkle blue eyes against her pale face.
Her voice was hesitant as she smoothed her blond curls. “I am Ms. Romano. Who are you?”
He saw a flicker of recognition in her eyes before he replied, “Pacifico Lopez, Zoogle Corp. But you’re not Dominika.” He smelled a faint scent of frangipani and his face flushed.
She snugged her sweater tight over her chest. “That’s my mother. She’s out of town. I’m Atlandia Romano. Her daughter.” Then added, “Mr. Lopez.”
Pacifico realized he was staring. Atlandia looked nothing like her mother or Sybilla. This lovely woman didn’t look like she could even be a werewolf. His face softened and he smiled, then remembered he’d come on serious business.
Behind him doors flew open and two ugly security guards entered, burly werewolves that appeared to be wolf-hyena crosses. The bigger one growled, “Want us to hurt him, miz?”
Atlandia shook her head. “I’m fine. Leave us alone.”
When they left, she raised her chin and asked, “Why did you come, Mr. Lopez?”
Pacifico stepped closer to the desk. “I have information that WWP operates an international ebook piracy operation. I want your mother to shut it down.”
The look on Atlandia’s face told him she had no idea what he was talking about.
“You must be mistaken, sir. This is a legitimate publishing company. Not financially successful, but I try to publish—”
The door burst open again and Sybilla Romano stepped in looking as mean as in the days she was Alpha of the Shipsfeather Pack. Her black Armani suit and knife-sharp stilettos accented her werewolf bitch style suit. Her raven chignon was pulled so tight that the edges of her darting dark eyes slanted up. “Landy, whatever is this dog doing in Mother’s office?” She approached Pacifico, looked down her prominent nose at him, and laughed. “Dog-shifters should be leashed. Or are little lap dogs an exception?”

About the Author
Georgia native Melissa Taggart is a believer in tackling challenges. Diagnosed with CP at the age of three months, as a child she discovered that writing offered her a way to deal with a speech impediment. It not only paved the way for better communication, but she transformed a challenge into the voice of a writer eager to teach the world that people with disabilities are people with the same lives, loves and longings as anyone else.

Through Melissa's amusing, insightful and touching stories, she addresses issues and common misconceptions in a way that will open the eyes and hearts of readers everywhere. Her goal is to deliver her special message with humor and candidness, as well as bring greater awareness about the real world of the disabled.

When Melissa is not busy creating the universe of Lindsey, Jason and Max, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She also volunteers part-time in a first grade classroom helping the kids with worksheets and games and other activities.

Lindsey Gray typed her first complete novel at the age of twelve and dreamed of making her writing into a career. When her eighth grade class wrote a twenty year reunion story, casting her as a mystery novelist, she wasn't sure she could make it a reality. After years of writing off and on, she decided to make a go of it. In December of 2010 she finally made her dream come true with her first published novel, Lies Inside. Five years and thousands of written words later, Lindsey is releasing her seventh published work, Nerdy Girl Nation.

The cottage boasted but three rooms: this bedroom they had shared, another smaller bedroom she’d dreamed of someday using as a nursery for her children and the main room which combined parlor and kitchen. The darkness of the main room enfolded Lisbeth like black velvet. She had but a glimpse of paler darkness as the front door opened and closed again.
“Declan!”
She followed after him, her heart torn between gladness and pain. He was here! But if he truly were here, returned by some miracle from the same sea that had stolen him, why would he go from her?
She reached the door, tore it open and stared out into the storm. Waves and salt spray poured over the stones in front of the cottage. Static filled the air and lightning arced overhead, the thunder competing for dominance with the crash of the rain.
Wearing only her nightgown, Lisbeth was immediately soaked to the skin. The wind tore at her hair and she strained to catch sight of the figure she had glimpsed in the doorway.
From the cottage, as well she knew, a path led either north to a narrow strip of shingle or south towards Lobster Cove. Which way might he have gone? She could see nothing but storm, the raging elements that matched the furor now in her heart. Would he head down to the sea? Most this coast consisted of sheer rock but the O’Sheas possessed that stony beach where they had hauled up their boats and readied their lobster traps. 
The boats were all gone; the White Gull lay in pieces. Why would Declan go there? Having come home to her, why would he leave at all?
She walked barefoot to a break in the rocks where the sea poured in like a gray beast, alive and wild. No one but a madman would be down on that strip of shingle now.
She turned her head toward the track but saw nothing. The thought came to her: maybe I imagined it. But she had heard the scrape of his boots on the floor. She had seen his hair ruffled by the force of the storm.
A dream, then. She’d had them before, yes, but never, never so real. She returned to the cottage where she shut the door and hurried to the fireplace. With clumsy hands, she searched for matches and the stub of a candle. Her fingers shook so violently it took her three attempts to put flame to the wick.
The light took hold slowly and seemed pitifully inadequate. Thrusting it aloft, Lisbeth retraced her steps to the door of her room, careful to keep her now-sodden garments swept back, her eyes on the floor.
A trail of wet led its way to the bedroom door and culminated on the threshold.
The very place where he had stood.
The candle tumbled from her suddenly numb fingers and the flame went out.

Exclusive Excerpt: Traffic’s insane, but I finally make it to Callie’s apartment just after two. I anxiously knock on the door, ridiculously eager to get my hands on her. Maybe she’ll be wearing some flimsy lingerie. Maybe she’ll be naked. My mind’s busy conjuring all the possibilities when she opens the door . . . wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. “Hey,” she says softly, stepping aside to let me in. “Hey. Tales of the Fifth Guardian; Book One: The Beginning
Tales of the Fifth Guardian is an adult Romantic Fantasy Adventure series with paranormal aspects and is based on the question: What if the descendants of the survivors of the island known as Atlantis lived among us in modern times with all the power and abilities of their ancestors? 
The series is recommended for readers 18+ due to mature sexual situations, violence, and dark/trigger scenes. Book One is priced at 99 cents as an introduction to the series since they need to be read in order and every three full volumes I'm creating "compilation volumes" that are priced at buy two get one free in ebook and print.

In Tales of the Fifth Guardian; Book One: The Beginning we meet the main character, Kerrisha Drew-Otlander and learn about some of her past. We are also introduced to the male main character, Kerreth and watch as Kerrisha shares the history of their people from him. Secrets are discovered and some are answered in Book One but nothing is as it seems and even the secrets have secrets. What if you were the one your people had been waiting for but no one believed you?


Bio (& a bit about the series)
My husband and I moved back to Florida in 1995 when he was medically retired from the U.S. Navy. I returned to school in 2003 and completed my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 2007. I began writing Tales of the Fifth Guardian in 2009 and self-publishing in 2012. I found the Indie community on Facebook about a year later. I left education in the fall of 2013 to pursue my Master's in Accounting while devoting more time to writing. There are currently eight full length books (averaging 140,000+ words and one short story approx. 43,000 words). There are 12 full length books planned with another 2-3 short stories. Kerrisha to the Otland Tower Council of Elders
“Now, you ask who I am; I have told you I am the fifth Knowledge Guardian of the People of Otland Island. It is my duty and my destiny to reunite the People and safeguard the humans. What am I? I am something that has never been seen before; I am the culmination of centuries. I am the last pureblood of my line. I am someone, I am something that will live for centuries and die a little every day. I will watch my children die, I will watch my grandchildren die, and still I will live on with my Blood-bonded mate, my perfect match. We will live together, work together, and fight together to fulfill our destinies every day. I am the last hope for this planet, for this world; if I fail in my destiny, if I fail to safeguard the humans, then the world will be ruled by the Lost Clans. It will not be ruled by those of us who believe in benevolence; it will be ruled by the Thorans, the Tinotchans, and the Devons. It will become a world of war, hunger, and deprivation. If I fail then we will all lose because I am the last hope.” 
Guest Post
Tales of the Fifth Guardian is my chance to "geek out" at times. I've created a language, Otlantesha, for the series and include an ever-expanding dictionary & pronunciation key at the rear of each volume. However, I have more words than have been included in the story and have had the full dictionary to date printed in booklets. There is also an "ancient" version of the language - think runic in style and that is included in the dictionary as well. The fun part of this is that most of my characters cuss in Otlantesha so while I don't generally include anything worse than "sh**" or "da**" and the occasional "Bi***" my characters use stronger language in Otlantesha. Their biggest insult is to call someone, "Yo Punday Cracho (yo (/o/ as in low) poon-die cra-kho)" or "You stupid whale's a**" because they did not have horses on thier ancient island home.

What is your favorite color socks to wear?
Black if I have to, but usually none - I live in Florida.

Do you wear boxers or briefs?
Women's briefs if the situation calls for full coverage or t-backs - I just celebrated my 25th anniversary, we need to keep things interesting somehow.

If you were a cookie, which kind would you be?
Macaroon

What was the best thing before sliced bread?
Since sliced bread was invented in 1928 one could argue that the automobile was however, if you look at the convenience aspect of sliced bread then I'd have to say moveable type since it placed books into more hands. 
Tell me how many hats you have in your house?
Too many to count - my husband collects ball caps and has hundreds.

What is your favorite daily wear attire?
Skorts and t-shirts. 

Which book is your most favorite ever?
The one book I literally read to death and had to buy a new one because it fell apart is "Flowers in the Attic".

Do you think people perceive you in the same way as you do? What do they see?
No, most people say I'm sweet and I do like to help but I think I'm pretty twisted at times, too.
