Dylan wheeled his chair around and pointed to the castle poster. She followed his thumb toward the girl in an elegant white and gold gown. “I need a Cinderella.”

“What happened to the regular Cinderella?”
“She didn’t work out.” He fiddled with the pens poking out of a ski boot-shaped shot glass. “One of my cousins plays the part a couple days per week and fills in when she can, but her schedule doesn’t allow her to fulfill our full-time needs. It’s the middle of July and I’m tired of fooling around with Cinderella.”
He grinned, his dimples diverting her from the princess problem. “That didn’t come out right. But you know what I mean. It’s getting frustrating, Jaine. I’m having a hard time finding someone reliable.” 
She bet that Cinderella wouldn’t get tired of fooling around with him.

The stranger looked Ellie up and down rather deliberately, his black eyes returning to stare into hers once more. Having found herself in similar situations before, Ellie simply endured his frank appraisal. He seemed surprised she challenged him, her hands now on her hips defiantly, but then bullies usually were surprised when anyone stood up to them. This one seemed no exception.  His expression relaxed only a little.
"I am usually the one protecting The People around here."
"The People? I'm not familiar...with…?" Ellie asked, noticing he was still staring at her.  She continued to stare right back at him and tried not to notice just how handsome he was.
"Indians."  The man's eyes narrowed further as he said this, as if expecting some reaction from her.
"Oh, well," Ellie stammered, suddenly embarrassed at her own behavior. "I didn't realize that you meant...  or that she was... well, it doesn't really matter that she is one of the People, does it? What a lovely way of putting that, much better than Indian.  Anyway, he shouldn't have treated her that way. I only saw someone being taken advantage of.  I do tend to stick my nose in when I see that.  A terrible habit of mine but there you have it."  Thinking the incident resolved, Ellie again moved to retrieve her things from the ground.  "Now, if you will excuse me, sir, I really must find my friends..." The man moved to block her yet again, apparently not quite finished with her yet.
"Have we met?" Ellie looked again at his face, still finding him intriguing.  His anger seemed to have vanished and was replaced by a warm searching look.  There was something about the way he was looking at her just then that did seem oddly familiar.  His handsome face captivated her, in spite of her resolve to the contrary, and his eyes held her gaze like a magnet. Ellie suddenly felt as if they were the only two people in the world standing there in the middle of the street.

About the Author
I am a writer who is re-imagining 'happily ever after'. My stories are more than historical romances... they are about the power of words, the power of love, and the consequences of the choices we make. A New Jersey native, I moved to beautiful Southern California to start over. A mother of two, the owner of a handmade business called Seeds of Inspiration, an avid gardener, a life-long (and long-suffering) Phillies fan and a voracious reader, I have finally added 'author' to my list of accomplishments.

The Treasure of Ravenwood: A Fairy Tale was my first published book and has been voted to the top 40 Best Chapter Books for Young Girls List on Goodreads. I wrote about “overnight success” in June and I’ve been thinking a lot about that phrase since. People often point to JK Rowling as an “overnight success” and, yet, I can’t help but feel she would be the first to object to that characterization about her publishing journey.
To call someone an overnight success is to ignore the blood, sweat and tears involved in writing and publishing. It implies luck and a force beyond talent. Now, I’ve heard all of the stories about how manuscripts get tossed out without ever being read and that it really is the luck of the draw to being noticed by a big publishing house. But, it’s not that to which I’m referring.
I hope that passionate writers who aspire to publishing their work will look to someone like JK Rowling, not because they think there is a short path to financial success in writing, but because she represents the long, hard, lonely, yet passionate road of the writer. Rather than looking at the success of the Harry Potter books, look to her Harvard Commencement speech. Measure your journey by her failures first. Better yet, don’t measure your own journey by someone else’s at all.
There is a reference in the Gilmore Girls television series to a first boyfriend being a “first pancake”. This is describing that first one you toss on the pan, that often comes out as an undercooked, pale test case and not the golden, perfectly-round flapjack to which you aspire. JK Rowling wrote just as many first pancakes as the rest of us. I’m sure she crumpled up some of those napkins and growled in frustration when the words didn’t flow as sweetly, thick and fragrant as maple syrup.
We all have first pancakes. We all have to start somewhere. We don’t usually serve someone just one pancake, either. We serve a stack. Start with that as your image. Don’t publish one book and sit back waiting to be an overnight success.  Write it, publish it, market it, and then get to writing the next one. And the next. And the next.
Focus on your recipe, your skill, your process  and improve it each and every time. Serve up a stack of great writing. Keep going and keep writing. Try other genres. Push your boundaries and stretch your comfort zone. Let the passion for writing be your muse and she will eventually take you where you want to go.
Focus on the writing. Always on the writing. Write for you, as you did in the beginning and the tell stories or pen the poems that only you can tell. Let the sales be a surprise and the accolades be a bonus. Let the writing be the goal and you will keep discouragement at bay.

It's more what musicians do I like... Dan Fogelberg, Mary Fahl, David Lanz... a very long list

Injustice and negativity

I use it for good, like a superpower

EXCERPT:  “Are you all right?” Howard asks, concern etched on his face.
“I don’t think I can go back in there,” I say in a pitifully weak voice.“It will be okay. I promise I’m not going to let anyone hurt you.” He tugs on my hand, trying to get me to move. When I refuse, he says, “It’s safe, I promise.”“How do you know?”“Because I’ve lived my whole life here.”The calm tone of his voice and the smile on his face should be reassuring, but I can’t shake the feeling that if I go inside something bad will happen. “But . . .”He grabs my hand and pulls me forward until we’re barely a hair’s breadth apart. “Bethanie, I can take care of you. I’ve taken care of you so far, haven’t I?”I nod but still don’t move. “I just can’t.” “Please,” he says, squeezing my hand as I try to move away. “You will be safe. on my honour, I swear.”This near to him I can feel the heat of his body. I want to close the gap between us and sink into his warmth. I look into his eyes and straightaway feel the tension drain from my body. Something in his expression tells me I can trust him, that he really won’t let anyone hurt me. He smiles and gives my hand another tug, and this time I follow.Entering the catacombs brings back memories of the previous day’s terror, as expected. Feeling me shudder, Howard pulls me close and puts an arm around my shoulders, guiding me safely through the passages.We are in the catacombs for a little while before we walk through an exit on the bedrock side, opposite the city. I am shocked to see a tunnel system open up before us.“What is this?” “They’re natural caverns in the earth’s crust. Not many people left know they are here.”The fact that no one knows where we are, and that they don’t even know these tunnels exist, makes me pause. “How do you know about them?” I ask, my curiosity warring with my fear. “I stumbled upon them by accident. I have always loved coming to the catacombs when I need a bit of peace and quiet. When I discovered this entrance, I couldn’t help but explore.” I can understand that. Up until now, I had never really thought about what existed outside the edges of the city. To know there is more is extremely exciting. Howard grabs a torch out of the backpack he brought with us. Then he pulls out what look like clothes. “What are they for?”“It’s going to get quite cold the further we venture along. These are hemp knit jumpers and scarves. They’ll keep you warm.” His eyes light up as he tosses one of the jumpers my way.Sliding it on, it doesn’t take long to realise he’s given me one of his jumpers. The sleeves are long, and it looks like a dress the way it falls just above my knees.He grabs my right hand and folds the sleeve up. “Sorry, mum doesn’t have any of this type of clothing.”
Once the right hand is visible out the end of the sleeve, he grabs my left and does the same thing. The urge to sniff the jumper hits me out of nowhere. The aroma is that of soap powder and something else I can’t quite put my finger on.“There you go. Hands free.” He grabs a scarf and wraps it around my neck, finishing up with a kiss to the cheek. “Snug as a bug.”My cheeks heat, the warmth spreading all the way down my chest. He takes my hand and leads me through the tunnel entrance with a lightness in his step I’ve not seen before. My thoughts immediately go back to the conversation I was having with Rhonda earlier and can’t help but wonder if this is the sensation she was talking about. I chastise myself for being so silly. It can’t possibly be what she was talking about because Howard and I are not in love. We barely even know one another. Casting my silly thoughts aside, I concentrate on what we are doing. It takes a little while for my eyes to adjust to the minimal lighting, but, when they do, the sight that greets me is amazing. With just the small amount of light from the torch, it looks like a million tiny rainbows are bouncing off the walls.“This is beautiful,” I say, my eyes darting around to take it all in.“This isn’t even the best bit,” he replies.We turn a corner, and the tunnel widens in front of us, directly into a cavern the size of a city block. The walls are bare rock and in the distance, I can hear a trickle of water. As in the tunnels, rainbows bounce off the walls wherever Howard shines the torch.I gasp. The beauty of it literally leaves me breathless.“You okay?”“Yes, it’s just so beautiful.” I take the torch from Howard and shine it around. The rainbow of colours, are stunning. “Come have a seat.” Howard says. I turn and at my feet is a blanket.I sit, still trying to take in everything around me. Though the light seems to barely penetrate the darkness, there is still much to see.“It’s amazing isn’t it? The crystal spread throughout the rock is mesmerising.” I nod in agreement because it truly is a remarkable sight. “It took me two years to explore it all.”I turn my head to the left to look at him. “Really. Why so long?”“Well, I don’t get to come here as often as I would like with all my other responsibilities. So I only get to come about once a month, sometimes less and it is much larger than you’d expect.”“I can see that it looks like it goes on forever. What did the other girls you’ve brought here think of it?”“I haven’t brought anyone else here, let alone a girl.” 
I blanch at his admission. “Really?”

We meet up for coffee the day after next. I swear to God, Olivia was right. This girl is the one for me. Sarah Dalton grew up in the middle of nowhere in the countryside of Derbyshire and as a result has an over-active imagination. 
She has been an avid reader for most of her life, taking inspiration from the stories she read as a child, and the novels she devoured as an adult.

Traci Hayden is a proud mother of four beautiful girls. She is also extremely lucky to be a grandmother to a multi-talented little girl and an adorable baby boy. She has always had a passion for reading, but recently the obsession for writing has taken over. As a Nova Scotian native now living in British Columbia, Traci has traveled across Canada, fueling her imagination from coast to coast. Cherime MacFarlane: Born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here for 38 years, I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and still live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I have cut firewood on shares and worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie.
My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in-laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word.
We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm. Thousands of documents I have written have been before various judges all over the state.
Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much I’d never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life, died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.
Susan Griscom writes paranormal and contemporary romance. She's hooked on gritty romances and is a huge fan of superheroes and bad boys confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers, and abilities beyond the norm mixed with steamy romance, of course. 
She loves those days when she gets to sit around in her sweat pants, doing nothing but writing emotionally charged stories about love and violence and drinking coffee. 
She lives in Northern California with her romantic husband and together they have five great superhero kids and eight mini-superhero grand kids, so far.
