Momentos: July 1st – July 15th, 2017

MOMENTOS
July 1st – July 15th, 2017

by Niall Doherty

1

After interviewing Janet yesterday I’m thinking I should move on from freelance web design. It’s fairly easy money, but it doesn’t fit in with anything else I’m doing. Wouldn’t I be better off doing freelance writing and blogging? That way, like Janet, I could earn a living while honing my craft, expanding my network, and building my brand. Wouldn’t earn as much to start, but long-term it would be the smart play.

2

From this rented apartment in Moscow I had five Skype calls today: 3M1K students in India and Kenya, someone interested in 3M1K in Amsterdam, a friend in Mexico, and my parents in Ireland. That’s instant communication with people on four different continents, and I took it completely for granted until I sat down to write this and thought about my day.

3

Definition of amortal: “Unable to die from disease or age. Immortal if no physical ailment befalls you.” Human technology could be advanced enough thirty years from now to make amortality possible. Would that make us more cautious, unwilling to take risks? Die snowboarding today and you’ll miss out on ~50 more years of living. But die doing that in an amortal future and you’ll miss out on eternity.

Pedestrian bridge over the Moskva

4

Apparently there are 243 stations on the Moscow Metro system. I’m wondering if it’s possible to hit all of them in a single day. You know, just for kicks. The metro opens at 5am and closes at 1am. That would give me 20 hours, which works out to about six minutes per station, including travel time. Bring some friends, shoot some video, make a day of it.

5

One of the great things about running this 3M1K biz is that I learn a lot on the job. Through it all I’ve become a much better marketer, copywriter and freelancer. But perhaps most beneficial has been doing regular Skype calls with members, lots of practice listening and coaching. I still have plenty of room for growth, but starting to appreciate how far I’ve come.

6

Feasting at a little corner kebab shop in Istanbul, the kind of place where old men gather for a chat, throwing scraps to a couple of cats. Weather’s perfect, faces in windows and balconies, in the air there’s the evening call to prayer. A kid walks through care-free, stepping on the backs of his shoes. Across the way at a grocery there are two women in hijab smiling with a young man. One reaches out and touches his face.

Busy street market in Istanbul

7

Been a good day. Epic slow breakfast with more plates than could fit on the table. Long walks through the city. Blue mosque, iced coffee, stray cats, lamb kebab. Now it’s almost midnight and we’re on a party boat on the Bosporus with friends met in Tenerife. But I’m wrecked and have taken to hiding in a quiet spot below deck to conserve a bit of energy. Not as young as I used to be.

8

Shoe shine guy crossing the street in front of us drops a brush and we call after him. He’s all grateful and insists on serving me. I cave too easily, knowing it’s not going to be a freebie, and thinking it might have been a setup from the start. Confirmed a couple hours later when someone else drops a brush in front of us. We say nothing to this dude, just give him the stink eye when he turns back to retrieve his bait.

9

Step-counter app says we walked 33 kilometers the previous two days. Combine that with the heat here and it makes sense I’m wrecked. Would probably have stayed in resting all day if I was on my own. But traveling with a partner you feel obliged to make the most of it, to get out and do stuff. Tonight that stuff was drinks at a rooftop bar watching the sunlight fade and a red moon rise.

10

Almost 2,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Turkey since the turn of the century, about half of them in the last 2.5 years. What worries me though is that almost every taxi I’ve taken in Istanbul has unusable seat belts. Check the numbers and you’ll see that 7,300 people were killed in traffic accidents in this country last year. But everyone’s all terror this and terror that and they don’t say shit about buckling up. 1
11

Layover in Bahrain at the fanciest lounge I’ve ever seen, with a massive spread of free food and attendants standing by. In prep for an upcoming podcast, I spend my time skimming The Vegetarian Myth and watching Cowspiracy, then proceed to feel like I shouldn’t be eating anything here. It was all probably produced unsustainably, and shipped in from thousands of miles away. But I eat it all anyway.

12

Fairly safe to say that most male tourists come to Thailand for sex and/or inebriation. When I first came here five years ago, I didn’t drink but I was definitely giddy at the prospect of the other thing. Now I’m all committed, that’s off the cards, too. It’s palpable on the plane though, all the lads with their smirks and beer bellies and lingering looks at the flight attendants, debauchery on their minds.

Had my first classes in boxing and BJJ today. Didn't spar in boxing but did get to roll plenty of times in BJJ.And it's just as I feared: I want more!

13

I’m here in Chiang Mai to learn how to fight, and I got stuck in today. An hour of boxing training, followed by ninety minutes of BJJ. Didn’t get to spar in the ring, but rolled quite a bit on the mat. My height was giving people problems, but they were giving me more. Still, I enjoyed it immensely. Something about that rough and tumble physical contact that’s good for the soul.

14

MMA sparring today, which was exhausting but so much fun. Got my ass kicked several times. Held my own a few times too but pretty sure that was when they were going easy on me or working on specific parts of their game. Also took a nice shot to the left eye, drew a little blood and left me with a good bruise. I’m secretly delighted.

15

Organized a dinner with seven friends tonight. Except I’d never met four of them before. Two I’d only known online for years, and one was a friend of another online friend. Two of the seven in 3M1K, five nationalities between us, many a story shared and lots of good food consumed. Just a random Saturday night in Chiang Mai.

Momentos: June 16th – June 30th, 2017

MOMENTOS
June 16th – June 30th, 2017

by Niall Doherty

16

It’s easy enough to delete a shitty comment, or walk away from someone disrespectful. But can you stop thinking about them after they’re gone? That’s the hard part, evicting them from your head, rather than let them live there and wreck the place, rent free. I think it was Jodie Foster who said, “In the end, winning is sleeping better.”

17

Upcoming travel plans: flying to Istanbul the first week of July, will spend a few days there for my lady’s birthday. After that it’s on to Thailand solo for a couple of weeks, going to dive into some fight training and get humbled. Then I’ll head up to Japan and meet up with herself again after she’s done with a work trip. We’ll spend several days exploring that dainty land before heading back west.

18

Getting the podcast rolling again with the Cuz. Aiming to do one episode per month now, which would be a big improvement over our one-every-four-months pace so far. Recorded close to two hours this evening on the topic of violence and fight training. Not sure if anyone will listen or care, but if nothing else it’s a good excuse to have more conversations with my best friend.

19

A good day for the biz. Got a bunch of stuff done, sold two copies of the Cheap Flight Checklist, and had five people sign up for 3M1K. Announcing the upcoming price increase for the latter surely didn’t hurt. Though as I told a friend today, it’s still very hard to predict how 3M1K will do from one month to the next. Zero sales the rest of the month wouldn’t surprise me, nor would twenty.

20

When you run your own business, you can be more flexible but you need to be more disciplined. It’s a double-edged sword. I take a nap after lunch pretty much every day and this afternoon we cycled through the woods to a nice park and lay in the sun for a while. But now it’s 11:33pm and I’m stuck at my laptop with my shoulders tense trying to finish some work and get to bed.

Down by the river

Down by the river

21

What goes through your mind when you see someone crushing it? Maybe a friend on Facebook with a ripped physique or somebody in the same line of work making a lot more money than you? Are you happy for them? Jealous? Critical? Would you feel the same if you were at their level? Do your current thoughts help you get there? Or do they hold you back?

22

Moscow is growing on me. At first, second and third glance it’s a big impersonal metropolis with harsh buildings and stern faces. But the longer I stay, the more I’m finding the beauty and warmth here. That park the other day, for instance. And this evening, on a boat full of songs and smiles, alongside scenic riverbanks and a glowing sky.

23

Words from Authority Hacker help explain some serious resistance I’ve been feeling this week: “Trying to get into SEO and not taking the time to learn the skill of building links is like trying get good at dating but refusing to talk to people… people are afraid of those two things (building links and talking to someone you’re attracted to) for the same reason: fear of rejection.”

24

People are so bad at discourse, man. Just read through a Facebook thread for an article on feminism, and pretty much everyone involved is attacking, judging, criticizing. So much anger, so much hate. Nobody says, “Let me see if I understand you correctly…” or “Can you clarify this point for me?” No minds are being broadened or changed. What the fuck are we doing?

25

With that in mind, when it came time to have ourselves a deep talk yesterday, while walking and rolling along by the river as the sun went down, I tried my best to follow the advice of a man who died five years ago. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. We leaned into the discomfort, and I reckon we emerged better for it.

Krylatskoe Sport Center

Krylatskoe Sport Center

26

The more successful 3M1K becomes, the more people it helps and the more testimonials I receive, the less aggressive my marketing. Feeling like I’ve amassed so much good content and feedback now that it mostly speaks for itself, and people are responding accordingly. It’s like a guy who worked hard for years chasing tail. Now he’s finally developed some significant substance and self-assurance, and finds himself getting better results with less effort.

27

Certain movies, books and podcasts bring back memories of time and place. Dark Knight Rises brings me back to Kathmandu. Mindless Eating has me just off the cargo ship in Lima. Sometimes the memory is hazy though, like that first Ryan Holiday episode on the Tim Ferriss podcast. I remember being on a bus, looking out at a brown hill, possibly in Bolivia.

28

Ten at night, sitting in the glow of two monitors, using an ironing board as a make-shift desk in this sparsely furnished apartment. Out the window and in the distance I see apartment blocks silhouetted against an orange sky. Been working pretty much the whole day, mostly just me and the machine. Now time for a yogurt-y treat. It’s been a good day.

29

Crazy how a pending price increase lights a fire under people. Deadline is midnight, regular sales coming in from folks who’ve been on my list for eons. It’s now a record-breaking month for 3M1K. But no time to relax. More members means more work helping them crush it. Ultimately, I don’t win unless they do.

30

Recorded an interview today with an Irish lady who works online writing about travel and visited 31 countries last year, a few of them on sponsored trips. Not so long ago she had a two-hour commute and twelve-hour work days at an office in Dublin. Now she goes where she wants, does what she wants. It’s a great time to be alive.

Momentos: June 1st – June 15th, 2017

MOMENTOS
June 1st – June 15th, 2017

by Niall Doherty

1

A little old Estonian lady just asked me to help her cross the street. So I did, guiding her across with her little hand in mine. She was very slow. It took about a minute, and the traffic had to wait for us. I couldn’t stop smiling after. Like she had given me a gift or something. Might have to start hanging out at crosswalks now, looking for another fix.

2

“Be careful with those Russian girls.” I’ve heard some variation of that a few times now. Amazes me that people actually say it with a straight face, somehow not realizing that they’re painting eighty million women with one judgemental brush. I wonder does the same thing happen in reverse, people telling my girl to be wary of those Irish men, with their penchant for alcoholism and fisticuffs.

3

Climbed a steep staircase up an 800-year-old wall. There’s a cafe up here, quiet with a nice view and little birds hunting for crumbs. Two cups of tea cost €8, but I’m remembering what a friend said earlier, about being grateful to pay for experiences you value. This, right here, this conversation with this backdrop, is easily worth the price of admission.

4

Terrorist attack in London. I skim the headlines for a minute and decide that’s enough. Circle of influence, circle of concern. Dwelling on that shit doesn’t help me or anyone else. I’ll rest today, after a long work week, maybe take a walk in the park, then get after it again tomorrow, focused on that first circle, pushing it to expand.

5

Here in Tallinn I’ve been getting up early and knocking out a 20-30 minute park workout before breakfast. This morning was stretching, a quick circuit, plus some grip and balance work. That’s two months now of exercising at least ten minutes per day. Combined with the cold showers, I’m wondering if I have more energy these days. Don’t seem to be sleeping as much.

Stumbled upon this medieval scuffle in the center of Tallinn a couple of weeks back.If only I'd had my suit of armor with me

Momentos: May 16th – May 31st, 2017

MOMENTOS
May 16th – May 31st, 2017

by Niall Doherty

16

She annoyed me today. Or at least I thought she did. Extreme Ownership reminding me that blaming someone else for my mood is a weak move. Take responsibility, Niall. What could you have done differently? How about being stronger with your boundaries? Stating clearly what you want? And what you don’t. Did you behave like the kind of partner you aim to be?

17

Walking down a broken suburban road, on the hunt for some milk for the mash. I don’t know where the nearest store is, or even if there is one nearby. On a piece of paper I have the words milk and supermarket written in Russian. I meet three teenage boys walking the other way, all in uniform, stop them and try get across what I’m looking for. They find me hilarious somehow, and beckon me to follow.

18

Today: rode a cable car then walked a rope bridge over a gigantic drop, almost a mile above sea level; grabbed good soup and salad and coffee at a place named for Pushkin; went for a ramble in the botanical. Twas all very nice, but honestly, after a week of frolicking and sightseeing and next-to-no working, I’m eager to get back to the grind.

19

– Do you accept Priority Pass?

– No, sorry. We don’t accept that here.

– And this is the only lounge in the airport?

– Yes, it is.

– Hmm. That’s too bad… Can we stay anyway?

– Yes, of course. The price is 4000 rubles per person.

– Hmm. Can we stay for free?

– No, I’m sorry. We can’t let anyone stay for free.

– Please?

20

Decided to stop being embarrassed about not knowing the language here, was walking around with my head down, shunning interactions, like I was trying to hide some shameful secret. So I’m not learning Russian (yet). Gotta own that decision and be at peace with it. Saying “good morning” in English is better than avoiding eye contact and staying silent.

Bridge crossing at Ai-Petri

21

Double date today in Moscow, with a guy I’ve known online for seven years. He’s married now, wife is due with their first next month, tells me they’d have probably never met except for a book I once recommended on my blog. Crazy the little things that make a big difference. If I had never made a quick YouTube video about the cost of living in Hong Kong, I wouldn’t have met my girl either.

22

Another few hours on a mega-article today. Up to 4,500 words now and might only be halfway there. The idea is to make it the absolute best resource online for that particular topic. I don’t know if I can say that about anything I’ve written before. Well, maybe my Becoming Unoffendable article, or the one about cargo ship travel. But this new piece feels next level.

23

Finally reading that Musk biography. Holy shit that man is incredible. I wouldn’t want to work for him, or be married to him, or be his kid – he doesn’t appear to be the most empathetic or emotionally available dude – but I’m glad we have people like him in the world, pushing hard to do the impossible and advance humanity. He may actually save us all.

24

Bus is packed, en route to meet my girl’s mother for the first time. Big beefy dude reaches across my face to hit the stop button, not a bother on him. Two minutes later, another guy does the same. The more places I visit, the more I realize that Ireland might be the most stand-offish place on the planet. I was indoctrinated into the cult of you-stay-over-there-and-I’ll-stay-over-here.

25

Short walk to the metro, change lines one time, express train to one of Moscow’s four airports, all smooth checking in and through security, grab free coffee and snacks in the lounge, write and send a quick email to my list, jump on a plane, less than two hours to Tallinn, walk the three clicks to the Airbnb, greeted by a Latvian dancer and a bionic cat.

Leaving Moscow

26

Editing an interview from earlier in the week with a lady who earns $1k/month working part-time as a subtitler. Not even doing translations, just watching movies and TV shows in English and creating subtitles in English. That interview’s for my 3M1K crew, one of whom posted in the private Facebook group this eve that he’s landed a $3k writing gig. Beautiful.

27

Things I learned today about Estonia:

Highest number of startups per capita in the world.
Their national anthem uses the same melody as that of Finland.
Tallinn is the biggest city in the world that offers free public transport for residents.
They have different words for white bread (sai) and other kinds of bread (leib).
They have the most supermodels per capita, and the highest ratio of women to men.

28

Pretty sure the cat here is trying to seduce me. Walked into my room earlier and he was lying on the bed doing some kind of improvised Mrs. Robinson pose, with a look like butter wouldn’t melt. I sat on the bed and began to work on my laptop, ignoring him, so he rolled over on his back and flashed me the undercarriage, then started with the tongue.

29

A few weeks ago I cut off the big Samsonite logo from the strap of my backpack. I try to avoid wearing or carrying any brand that’s easily identifiable, find it strange that people walk around sporting big Adidas logs and such, like human billboards. Way I see it, brands should be paying us to advertise for them.

30

It’s a different experience for me, arriving in a new place, especially one known for beautiful women, and not being on the hunt. Times past I would often have Tinder open before I left the airport, and the never-ending chase would eat up a lot of my time. Ryan Holiday once wrote that a great partner is the ultimate life hack. He’s probably right about that.

31

A friend of mine is a manager in a department store, told me once that they train staff not to say “no problem” or “no worries” to customers. Because those are double negatives. Even though they’re meant to be taken as positive, subconsciously they can have the opposite affect. Better to say something like “of course” or “you’re welcome.”

Momentos: May 1st – May 15th, 2017

MOMENTOS
May 1st – May 15th, 2017

by Niall Doherty

1

I wasn’t all that happy until my early twenties, until I got that monkey off my back and began to overcome the shyness. Since then I reckon I’ve been happy most of the time, even at my old 9-to-5 job. Part of that’s because I’ve been constantly chasing dreams, and that chase is fulfilling. But another part is gratitude, appreciation. If you don’t practice that, happiness can be right there and you’ll never notice.

2

Added a new item to my daily habit checklist. More a question actually: did I read a book while eating breakfast? I find that my day gets off to a better start when I do that, starting out more proactive, more conscious. The easy alternative is to watch YouTube videos while scoffing the porridge, and that can all-too-easily turn into binge watching comedy clips I’ve already seen a thousand times.

3

Last month I did 5 minutes of breathing exercises every day, plus 30 seconds of maximum cold to end every shower. Didn’t get much from the breathing exercises, so switching that time back to my regular meditation practice. Liking the cold showers though, will stick with that for another month. Exact benefits are unclear but it doesn’t seem to deplete my willpower and there’s something satisfying about it.

4

Knocked off work early today, went and spent the afternoon with my girl, riding bikes by the river, past a place where they may have built the rocket that put Yuri into space. What have I noticed about Moscow so far? Plenty of playgrounds and outdoor gyms, an impressive metro, electric street signs, wires in the sky, sad apartment buildings, beautiful women and tough motherfuckers.

5

About 2,500 words deep into producing an epic piece of content. It takes time – spent about seven hours at it today and I’m not even halfway through – but the process is fairly straightforward. Actually, I’m getting ahead of myself here. Let’s wait and see if it gets the traffic I expect it to. Otherwise it’s just an epic waste of time.

Breakfast in Moscow

6

Reading aloud: A real man doesn’t play mind games or try to trick anyone. She asks for an example. Well, the classic one is a guy waiting three days to call a girl he likes. Dude, if you like her, just call her. What are you waiting for? Maybe thirty minutes from now, I’ll ask myself that same question, and realize there’s no reason to wait any longer.

7

The comments that have come in about me and my girl. Lots of assumptions, lots of projection, some of them downright mean. I guess that’s what I get for writing publicly about our relationship. Could be worse though. Watched a YouTube star read her mean comments the other day. Horrific stuff. When you find yourself criticizing someone anonymously online, chances are you’re being a dick.

8

A local chap here the other day observed that I’m quite comfortable finding my way around Moscow despite not knowing the language. On reflection, it’s likely because I’ve spent most of my days the past ~7 years living in non-English-speaking countries. Plenty of practice. Travel to enough foreign lands and your brain learns to freak out less, figure out more.

9

Big day in Russia, anniversary of the Soviet victory over the Nazis, some 72 years ago now. People wear green hats and striped ribbons and walk the streets holding black and white photos of relatives and ancestors who fought and died for the cause. There are aerial displays and fireworks and marches and people singing old songs and dancing in the street.

10

This morning a great improv sketch appeared as an ad before a music video on YouTube. I watched and was enthralled, had a strong urge to click through and find out more about the artist. But I knew that would lead me down a rabbit hole, and I had bigger, more important, less glittery fish to fry. So I let it go, reasoning that we must pass up some things we like to get more things we love.

11

Tough travel day. Lacking sleep, bag left on the plane, dose of the scutters, bank cards not working, couldn’t find our hotel, drove the rental car off a ledge in a dark alley, had to get a couple of gruff looking local dudes to bail us out after midnight. My lady came through like a trooper though. I speak maybe seven words of Russian so she had to talk our way out of each mess while I stood there trying not to look like a dimwit.

12

Memories of Iran five years ago, when I rolled into town with little cash and found my plastic was useless. Then the mad scramble to figure something out. Same deal now. Except I’m also dealing with bowel issues. In a cafe on the laptop trying to wire money to a Russian bank account – harder than you’d think – when I’m forced to run to the restroom, only to be confronted by my old nemesis: a fucking squat toilet.

13

What this peninsula lacks in internet and infrastructure and decent restaurants and toilet facilities, it makes up for with spectacular views. Hired a guide and spent a few hours hiking through a park here today, lush greens and volcanic rock formations falling into a black sea, namesakes of the devil but good for the soul.

There’s a path carved in the rock along the water’s edge, leading away from a town once called Paradise. A champagne-making prince forged this walkway century before last, passing through an impressive grotto under immense slabs of stone. Legend has it the prince hosted banquets here, famous opera singers performing while dolphins danced in the bay.

There was a girl on the train the other day with nails so long she could barely use her phone. They looked great, I guess, but were they worth becoming disabled for? Give me a girl who doesn’t mind a little dirt under her (trimmed) fingernails. A girl who wears shoes she can walk in. A girl I can climb mountains with. A girl who reads books, across from me as we have breakfast, drink coffee, eat dinner.

I Hate My Job – 4 Things You Can Do When You Hate Your Job

“I hate my job!”
4 Things You Can Do When You Hate Your Job

by Niall Doherty

Updated: May 4, 2017

I was in a coffee shop recently and overheard two employees conversing. One sighed and said to the other, “I hate my job, can’t wait for the weekend to get here. Three whole days off!”

It was Tuesday.

Seth Godin – I hate my jobSeth Godin

Instead of wondering where your next vacation is, maybe you ought to set up a life you don’t need to escape from.

It saddens me that there are so many people in the world working jobs they hate, always waiting for the weekend. We spend a huge chunk of our waking hours working, and so methinks it’s a good idea to be doing work that you love.

Or, at the very least, work that doesn’t make you want to slash your wrists.

Now, I know: it’s easy to get stuck in a job you hate, to feel like you have little choice but to stay there and endure the misery.

But hopefully what follows will convince you otherwise.

4 Things You Can Do If You Hate Your Job

If you hate your job, the first thing you need to realize is that you have options.

Really, you do. Four of them:

Do nothing and continue to hate your job
Lie to yourself and pretend everything is peachy
Take action to make the job more enjoyable
Quit

I suggest you pass on option one. Not only will it lead to indefinite unhappiness (and often stress), but it makes you a coward as well.

Option two is also pretty lame. With that you’re just ignoring the problem, closing your eyes and sticking your fingers in your ears. It might work for a while, but eventually you’ll crack.

The last two options are pretty good.

Option three is to shake things up from the inside. You can have an honest and frank conversation with your boss about what you feel needs to change in order for you to be happy working there. Then you can get busy making those changes happen, being a part of the solution. A different approach and a little moxie might be all that’s standing between you and a happy work life.

But let’s say you can’t affect any kind of positive change in your current job. That leaves you with option four, quitting.

Warren Buffett – I hate my jobWarren Buffett

There comes a time when you ought to start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning. I think you are out of your mind if you keep taking jobs that you don't like because you think it will look good on your resume. Isn't that a little like saving up sex for your old age?

Now before you go down the quitting route, ask yourself this question:

“Do I hate my job, or my career?”

If it’s just your specific job that you hate (i.e. you don’t like your current boss, colleagues and/or company culture) look for better opportunities elsewhere. If you’re good at what you do, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a similar job in a better situation, and often you can secure a better job offer before burning bridges with your current employer.

Quitting Smart

Before you pull the trigger, make sure you have an escape plan.

Quitting on a whim might be right for some people, but you give yourself a much better chance of landing on your feet if you think ahead and get a few wheels turning before jumping ship.

First Thing: Give Yourself A Deadline For Calling It Quits

This will make each remaining day at your current job a little easier. You can swallow your pride and get some kick-ass work done because you’ll know where the finish line is. It also forces you to figure out your next steps.

Second: Start Getting Your Finances In Order

Try to save up enough money so you can go at least three months without any income. More is better, but aim for three months minimum.

This goes hand in hand with slashing your expenses. You can live on very little money once you know your priorities. And your main priority should be to not spend 2000 hours a year working a job you hate.

One great way to start getting a handle on your finances is to track everything you earn and spend. I’ve been doing that meticulously since 2011, and publishing monthly finance reports online. Subscribe here and you can browse all my reports.Check the video below to see how I keep track.

Next: Work Harder

Work harder at that current job you hate, because you can’t just magically flip a switch and pick up good work habits when you finally find a job you love. Birth those habits right now, where you are.

You also need to work harder on yourself, but let’s talk about that under a new heading…

Finding Work You Love

(Or At Least Don’t Hate)

Regardless of whether you want to become self-employed or remain an employee, you’re going to have to hustle. Big time.

Spend all your free time building up your skillset. Get a web presence and work at becoming renowned for your expertise. You’ll be able to leverage this later, when you really need to attract clients or employers.

If you don’t yet consider yourself an expert at anything, figure out what you want to be good at and then dive right in. Embrace the suck. Keep showing up every day and experiment like crazy. Take what works and throw out the rest.

You’ll get there eventually.

Thomas Edison – I hate my jobThomas Edison

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

And remember: expertise is relative. You don’t have to become the best in the world overnight. You just need to know enough to help others who know less than you.

If you’re looking to land a new job, don’t just send out a hundred resumes and hope someone takes a bite. That’s probably how you ended up in your current crappy job.

Instead, get specific about who you want to work for.

Learn as much as you can about them. Learn what problems they have and figure out how you can be the solution. No worries if they’re not hiring. Prove your worth and they’ll make room for you. Smart companies hire great people, because they know that people are their most valuable asset.

Finally, start networking like crazy.

I know some folks want to be covert about looking for a new job, worried that they might piss off their current employer. I guess you have to suss that out for yourself, if you really need the money and can’t risk losing the steady income just yet.

But if you can put the word out there, all the better. The more people you have in the know about your search and aware of your skills, the easier it will be to find work you love.

If All Else Fails…

I found myself stuck in a crappy job in Ireland years ago. I wasn’t much of a go-getter and I didn’t have much in the way of marketable skills. So what did I do? I quit my job and found another. The new gig wasn’t any better. In fact, the pay was less and the boredom was more.

But there was one key difference: I had moved to a foreign country.

In my experience, getting away really shakes up your worldview and helps you figure out what to do with your life. So, if all else fails, go abroad. Save up enough for a plane ticket and secure a job, any job, even if it means taking a few steps down the career ladder.

Had I not packed my bag all those years ago and wandered off to a foreign country, there’s a good chance I’d still be working a job I hate. Instead, I love what I do, and you’ll never find me wishing for the weekend on a Tuesday.

“I Hate My Boss!”

Okay, so maybe you don’t just hate your job. Maybe you hate working for other people, hate having a boss.

Much like Chuck…

Charles Bukowski – I hate my jobCharles Bukowski

How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 8:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?

In that case, your only real option is to start your own business and become your own boss.
