by Eden Ashley
Release Date: 07/03/13
Paranormal
452 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
To survive, their bond must be unbreakable.
When the mysterious and passionate Rhane rescues Kali from an attacker in the theater parking lot, they form an immediate, smoldering connection. But Kali doesn’t remember Rhane or anything from their past. As far as Kali knows, she’s just a seventeen-year-old kid coping with an insatiable hunger for the “spark” or energy of others, feeding on classmates to survive.
A unique artifact—one that may hold the key to returning Kali’s memories—is uncovered by the archaeology firm where she works part-time, sending Kali and Rhane on a dangerous journey that leads them to the Forbidden City, into the unforgiving Gobi, and into the ruins of Rhane’s ancient homeland. As they fight for survival, Kali begins to discover who she really is and the true power she possesses.
But Rhane still harbors a secret that could destroy Kali…unless old enemies kill her first.

Dark Siren Excerpt: Hurry
The sound of her screams reached him as he neared the dorm. Pausing at the threshold, the man stepped inside. Death and the wind were at his back. Dozens of hollow-eyed students turned to observe his presence. Fear had twisted their youthful faces into horrific masks. A few of them wept. Others clung together as another scream echoed into the night. The man flinched. Then he steeled himself against all emotion. His kind was supposed to feel nothing.
He made his way through the crowd, students eagerly shuffling aside to let him pass. It was as if somehow they sensed in him the power to end her suffering. When a young man dressed only in boxers and a lettered shirt stepped forward from a cluster of solemn dorm mates, the man stopped. He recognized the boy.
“You are William. You are the one who called.”
“Yes, sir,” the young man said while nodding. His eyes were wide and frightened as he pointed ahead to a closed door painted prison grey. “She’s in there, sir.”
The man looked at the door, and then back at the boy. “Is she alone?”
William’s shoulders slumped with embarrassment. “I tried to stay with her but…” his voice trailed, dropping to a hoarse whisper. “She looks bad, sir. She wouldn’t stop screaming for me to get out. I got scared. I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright, son. You have done well.” The man laid a hand on the boy’s shoulder with an encouraging smile that reflected none of the sadness he felt. “She’s going to be okay.”
But her cries were becoming more tormented by the second. He quickly continued down the hall to the grey door. Behind it, he found her all alone. Her thin, pale body was curled on a beaten sofa in the center of the room. She was drenched in sweat. Dark hair plastered against her face, framing a beautiful canvas contorted with anguish. He placed a hand gently on her forehead.
Her eyes fluttered open. “Daddy?”
“I’m here, sweetheart. Everything is fine now.”
Sobbing in relief even as another surge of agony ransacked her strength, she gritted her teeth. “It hurts.”
Squeezing her hand, he spoke in a voice thick with regret. “I know. I’m sorry. Letting you come here was a mistake. I’ve waited too long.”
She was lost in the pain and didn’t seem to hear him. “I see horrible things. I did horrible things. There was so much blood.”
It hurt him terribly to see her in such distress. No matter what the others said, this girl had truly been his daughter. But right now, his love for her could not matter. He had a job to do. There were things he needed to know. There were questions he had to ask.
“What do you see?”
“Bodies, hundreds of bodies littering the ground…” The words broke off as she rolled with another wave of misery. “They’re burned…old and young, women and children.” She sobbed again. “I think I burned them.”
“I’m going to give you something to stop the pain. It will help you sleep.”
“Please hurry, Daddy. Make it stop.” Her body shuddered. “I can’t take any more of this.”
She lifted her head, giving him a good look at her face. Surging veins had crept like black spiders from the corners of her eyes, transforming the surrounding skin into dark pools. She was deteriorating rapidly. If the process wasn’t slowed, the human form would soon be lost.

Series: Soul Shamans #1
Release date: February 3rd 2015
Publisher: Sagan Press
Purchase: Amazon
Synopsis via Goodreads:
Sometimes it isn’t as easy as choosing right or wrong.
Sixteen-year-old Holly Bennett is a comic book nerd, a con artist, and a shaman. Most days Holly wishes she could trade in her power of spirit communication for something more useful–like fireballs or Wolverine claws. She knows spirits aren’t exactly Casper the Friendly Ghosts. They’re dangerous beings from Lower World who snack on human life, and messing with the magic from their world is an express ticket to big trouble. But when a shaman sticks her mom’s mind between their world and ours, Holly becomes the unexpected breadwinner in the family. She uses her burgeoning shaman powers to set up fake hauntings and “banish” the so-called ghosts from her wealthy classmates’ bedrooms. For a fee, of course.
When actual spirits start manifesting, Holly discovers that other shamans have come to town, summoning life-sucking spirits for their own ends. And the newcomers may just hold the clue Holly’s been looking for–the one that can release her mom’s mind from its Lower World prison. With the help of both a cute web comic artist and her partner-in-con, Holly plots to take them down, throwing her into a whirlwind of speedboat getaways, breaking and entering, and astral projections into the spirit world. And as her mom’s mind slips further away, Holly has to fight to save her, and the rest of the town, before they get sucked into Lower World permanently.

EXCERPT

There are times when I listen to the moralistic words of the angel on my right shoulder rather than the wicked whispers of the demon on my left. With Kylie Wilkinson leaning across the cafeteria table, eager to hand over cash I so desperately needed, I couldn’t help but smack the halo off that perfect little angel.“Two hundred bucks,” I said, holding my hand palm up. The eagerness on Kylie’s heart-shaped face fell into a scowl. She tucked a stray strand of glossy hair behind her polka-dotted headband and shifted in her seat.
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Holly.”
I pulled back my hand, closed my fingers into a fist and pretended to be interested in my bologna sandwich. That move got them every time. The din of cafeteria chatter rose up around us as we sat in silence. Girls laughed, plates clattered and sneakers squeaked. Five seconds passed before Kylie cleared her throat.
“Okay, wait.” She reached into her Eddie Bauer backpack and pulled out her wallet.
I kept my attention on my sandwich, nibbling away while she anxiously counted the cash. She had exactly four fifties which made me think she already knew what I charged and had been playing me to see if I’d go lower.
A guy walking by our table stopped to watch the transaction. I turned to raise my eyebrows at the tall, thin figure towering over us. Nathan Whitman, Kylie’s ex-boyfriend. He flashed a grin at me, his dark, wavy hair curling on his forehead, his high cheekbones carving a V on his otherwise boyish face. I smiled around my sandwich and hoped I didn’t have bits of meat stuck between my teeth.
“Is our friendly, neighborhood ghostbuster in action again?”
I’d taken a case for Nathan last year. He’d thought he was being haunted—they all did. Before that day, I’d considered Nathan just another bland guy navigating the Seaport High popular crowd. A preppy sailor only interested in country clubs and stock points. But after seeing the stacks of comic books in his room, I decided there might be an interesting guy hiding behind the polo shirts.
Not that I’d ever had the time to find out.

Excerpt
“What are you doing here?”
It’s Carter freaking Blackwood. Of course.
He smiles that ridiculously bright, white smile of his and lets out a soft snicker. “I’m fixing a floor for a friend, what are you doing here?”
It’s completely obvious what I’m doing here, seeing as I’m carrying two huge trays of sugar cookies in my arms.
“A friend? You just moved in. How do you have friends already?” I say it a bit harsher than I probably should but honestly, how does he have friends already? James and I were here a good six months before people started really talking to me. It was a year before I could call any of them friends. The edges of Carter’s mouth turn down and his head dips to one side as his shoulders hunch then settle.
“People like me, I guess.”
The smug look on his face is enough to make me want to slap it. Or kiss it.
Wait. Not kiss it. I didn’t mean kiss it. Why am I staring at his lips?
“People who don’t want to kill me that is. Are you okay?”
I blink, and search my brain, but I’m still not quite sure what to say to him, so I extend my arms. “I brought cookies.” As soon as I say the words, I hear them. I sound ridiculous and Carter’s bright eyes crinkle with amusement.
He closes his lids and he breathes the baked goods in. Then hums. The sound of his voice sends a vibration through me and I shiver. I am eternally grateful that he doesn’t see it happen.
His eyes open slowly. When they reach mine, I’m glued to his stare like a deer in the headlights.
“Those cookies smell really fucking good, Iris.”
The bedroom eyes catch me off guard and my mouth falls open so I snap it shut. I’m a buffoon with no ability to speak.
“Can I have one?” He reaches out and I balance the platter with one hand, then slap his fingers with the other while I find words. A word that is.
“No.”
“Ow.” He pulls his hand away, like a child getting reprimanded, only when we make eye contact again, he doesn’t seem child like to me.
I wouldn’t say he’s angry. He doesn’t exactly laugh, either. And his eyes gleam as he stares at me. I hate his eyes almost as much as I hate his teeth. Maybe more. Dammit, I’m staring, again.
“They’re for Ally’s class,” I tell him. “Fundraiser, I mean bake sale.” I fumble my words. He’s so frustrating.

Author Interview
How did Extraordinary Sam came about? What inspired you to create him as a character?
The story started as a bedtime story I told my oldest son when he was four. It was a simple story about a kid who had a magic hatbox and could be a cowboy, pirate, or anybody who wears a hat. Those stories lasted a couple weeks and then were replaced by some other adventure. About two years later, he asked for a magic hatbox story – those stories had stayed in the back of his mind all that time. That got me thinking maybe I could make something more out of this boy an his box. Extraordinary Sam was born. I sat down a couple days later and fleshed out an outline for a possible story and I was beginning to understand who this kid is, what he wants, and what stands in his way.
Did the story develop easily or did it take a long while to complete a first draft?
I never considered myself to be a writer, but have always had a vivid imagination. My wife saw there was an online creative writing course for aspiring children’s book authors. I was surprised in the beginning by how easily the story flowed. That all changed when Sam had his first obstacle and things came to a screeching halt. I spent days writing and deleting. Nothing seemed to fit. Life started getting in the way and the book sat untouched for eleven months until a friend asked how the book was coming and I knew it was time to get back to writing.
The story continued to take shape, but not as quickly. I thought it would be a good idea to join SCBWI and attend a conference. I felt good about my manuscript (2/3 the way complete at that point) and decided to get a formal critique from an agent. My story received a very mixed review and I realized I had a lot to learn.
I joined a critique group and began to fine tune my story. Six months later, I decided to take my much improved manuscript to another conference and have it critiqued once again. The review this time was much better, but it still wasn’t ready. Inspiration hit me and new wrinkles in the story came to light. The rest of the story couldn’t get out of my head and onto the computer fast enough. A few months later, it was ready to submit to agents and editors.
So, in total, the story took over three years to complete.
What is your writing process (a specific word count or chapter goal for each day)?
I read about how other authors are dedicated to writing 1000 words or two pages per day. Unfortunately, my brain isn’t wired for such goals (maybe it’s my ADD). Much of my “work” happens in my head and much of the time, as I’m trying to fall asleep. I can go three days without typing a word, then spend six hours at my local Starbucks and write fifteen pages. I ride the inspiration waves and feel I have a much more organic story that wouldn’t be possible if I forced myself to meet a daily goal.
What other books / blogs / projects have you been working on (Middle Grade Mafia blog)?
I have begun work on the second book in the Extraordinary Sam story and that has been a lot of fun. There are two other books I have plotted out and written a few chapters, but they will have to wait.
Outside of my writing, I run a blog (along with five other writers) called Middle Grade Mafia. On the site, we review middle grade books, share writing tips, and interview middle grade authors, agents, and editors. We try to balance established, well known authors with newer writers just breaking into the business. We have been lucky enough to interview some amazing authors on our site: Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Katherine Applegate (The One and Only Ivan), and Tom Angleberger (the Origami Yoda series) to name a few. It has been a blast!
What are some of your favorite books and authors who inspired you?
I hope I don’t shock people too much when I tell you that I hated reading when I was younger, but I blame that on undiagnosed ADD. Having to focus on a page was such a struggle. As an adult, especially with children of my own, I have fallen in love with middle grade fiction.
There are a number of authors who do such an amazing job, it is hard to pick just a few. One series I absolutely love is Christopher Healy’s Hero’s Guide (Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom is the first book).. Healy has a gift of blending adventure and humor. If you haven’t read his books, you are missing out. Another book that I loved is Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Leisl Shurtliff. Shurtliff’s ability to recreate the character of Rumelstiltskin into a good-natured, tender boy looking to discover his full name, and his destiny, is amazing. The blend of action, humor and emotion makes for a great read.
