Living in the Home With the GHOST of a former 'DIXIE MAFIA' HITMAN

A man and his family move into the past home of a former Dixie mafia hitman. The witness details the paranormal activity and strange discoveries associated with the house.

The following anecdote was received several years ago from a 'Phantoms and Monsters' reader:

"When I first moved to Georgia from Florida in 1991, I moved into a house in Smyrna with my future first wife and her two kids. The house was a 2-story ranch built in the early '60s. The basement had a large family room running almost the length of the house along with 2 bedrooms. There were several windows on the back side of the house, up high in the room, at about ground level outside. This is the room that had the TV. The house also had lots of walls with large drywall patches, that I initially couldn't explain. Anyway, at night I always felt something was watching me from those windows while I was watching TV. And it wasn't a warm and fuzzy feeling either. It was the kind of feeling of, I can't look out the window, because if I see something I will scream.

Two weird, unexplainable things happened in that house while I lived there that I know about. The first happened when I got home from work one late afternoon and went downstairs and laid on the couch with my back to the room and waited for my wife to get home. After a few minutes, I heard someone walk from the direction of the stairs towards me and up behind me and stop. I figured it was my wife who was checking on me and thought I was asleep. Then I heard a big sigh and them walking away. Well about 20 minutes later my wife came home, and I was all alone in the house!

The next thing that happened was when my stepdaughter and wife were cleaning her bedroom, which was downstairs in the basement. They were cleaning her dresser together and all of a sudden, a music box on the dresser opened up by itself and then closed by itself. Both of them initially just stood there stunned and didn't say anything and then came and got me.

One day, our neighbor Betty came over with a newspaper article. She had lived next door for years. She told us that a hitman for the Dixie Mafia had lived in the house for years. His name was John Elbert Ransom and Georgia authorities had him associated with 25 murders. At the time I lived in the house, he was in jail for conspiracy to commit murder. Betty told us all kinds of stories, including that when they arrested him, they cut holes in the walls of the house looking for illegal drugs and guns.

I always wondered if one of his victims had come back to haunt him." B

Intriguing ALIEN ABDUCTION EVENT Detailed by Michigan Experiencer (PHOTOS)

The experiencer details the abduction of her husband, even though she and her family through the generations have been the victims of supposed encounters.

I received the following account:

"I am a 58-year-old white female, I have been an abductee all my life, as my mother was. I have decided to finally tell my (stories) too many to list here. I do have some very pertinent information, that to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever stated in any reports I have ever read.

The abduction of my husband was as follows: I have never had a memory of him ever being abducted. We live in Gaylord, Michigan. In November of 2014 at approximately 2:53 am I was in bed at the foot of the bed facing a sliding glass door, when I awoke to a presence. I lay in bed and observed a 30-foot disc-like object that appeared to be vertical, so I could observe the undercarriage of the object. I observed I believe at least 3 circular rows of lights, most outer edge being red, the inner circle being white, and the center row being green. It is so strange but I scooted over to one side of the bed so they wouldn't see me. Fell back to sleep for reasons I don't understand, but this will happen to me like they have total control over my reactions/behaviors.

The next thing I remember is I could hear my dog running from the side of the bed, it startled me as it awoke me with her running and her nails clicking on the hardwood floor. I remember running down the hall and yelling her name, she would normally come to me. As I approached the end of the hall and turned to go into the living room which was to the right, I saw her sitting and staring at the front door. It has frosted glass and I could see red and green blinking lights. I squatted down and checked to see if she was breathing, calling her name, her ears were perked up, and she had no knowledge of my presence. I can remember saying aloud 'OK she is alive', then the lights stopped blinking and she was back out of her trance. I went to the chair where my husband had been sleeping, and he was not there. I looked out the sliding glass door in the front, and I saw what they had planted in my mind. I said 'Oh it's ok, there are just cars parked in front so the people can go into church!'

They are very clever to plant images, so they can control you. I then started to walk into the kitchen when I came face to face with a 4-foot-tall white colored entity and a 5-foot-tall grey. I poked the white entity, and stated "What did you do to my dog?" Then when I realized I poked (him) my fingernail went into his skin, I then drew my finger back looked at my nail, and stated "I'm sorry I didn't mean to hurt you!" M

7-FOOT-TALL MONKEY & HUMAN-FACED OWL Seen in Downtown Miami!

John in Miami, Florida called in Coast to Coast AM to tell of a weird sighting he had:

“Back in February, I saw what looked like a large monkey about 7 feet tall or so. And I was able to call the zoo and give a description of them on the tape. And I was trying to get the Department of Natural Resources for the state to warn them that this thing was running around. It was around for a couple of hours that night.

This was in the downtown area, believe it or not. But this was kinda like a wilderness area near the river. In Florida, in Miami. I didn't smell anything. I eventually got within 20 feet of the thing and tried to get a picture, like you said, my camera failed and wouldn't work. I just couldn't get a picture. I couldn't get it with my cellphone either and the strangest thing of the entire night, I don't even like to tell this to people because it sounds like I'm crazy.

But at the end of that night, that thing was joined by an owl. An owl showed up! It had, what looked like the face of a man on it. And I’ve had nightmares about that since. I couldn't believe I saw something that way but I did. I wish I could have gotten that on film. And they both more or less went toward the ground and they both just - dissolved. It was like they both just evaporated and I couldn't believe I saw that. I had two cups of coffee at the beginning of the night so I knew I was well aware of what was going on.”

TALL ALIENS Visit Las Vegas Casino

The following interesting report is from Albert S. Rosales. They were all skinny, and tall, and had whitish hair that seemed to shimmer as if the light was bouncing off it.

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Date: May, 1990
Time: 4:00 a.m

The witness was on his way back home to California and stopped off at the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas and played blackjack into the night. He went to the restroom and on his way back to the tables he stopped and watched a peculiar individual walking up the stairs. The person had a hat and sunglasses on, yet something wasn’t right with the way he was walking or climbing the stairs. It looked like he was stuck in mud, his knees sort of came out to the side as he tried raising his feet to take the next step.

The witness noticed also that there were about three more that looked just like him at the top of the stairs, some taller. They were all skinny, and tall, and had whitish hair that seemed to shimmer as if the light was bouncing off it, the witness had never seen hair like that before. His immediate reaction was “What a freak” he thought to himself. Suddenly the one on the stairs stopped, and turned, looking at the witness, the others at the top were looking down at him and at the witness who felt guilty for staring and decided to get back to his table.

Comments: After reading about Charles Hall, the witness made a connection between this bizarre group and the “tall whites” that Hall talked about. The witness went on to encounter several UFOs around Cactus Springs, Nevada.

Brothers STALKED BY HUGE UNKNOWN CREATURE in West Virginia Mountains

Two brothers are hiking and camping in the West Virginia mountains when they hear soft footsteps on the trail behind them. It became apparent that a cryptid was stalking them.

I received the following account:

"In 2017 I was backpacking with my brother in the mountains of West Virginia. To get to our destination we had to drive for about 2 hours up a very long and deep-ditched road. After reaching the mountain, we got all of the gear out of the car and started our hour-long hike into the woods. Our destination was at the edge of a small lake. Behind us, was the long path back to the car which was covered by fallen trees and thick brush. The area was surrounded by high jagged cliffs.

After about an hour of resting, we set up camp and started a fire. We proceeded to cook as the sun set over the large rock walls across the lake from us. Just after the sun went down, the strangeness began. Every half-hour or so, my brother would hear what he said were soft footsteps coming from the trail behind us. I was really tired and kept blowing it off as a joke. However as the night passed on, he refused to stop talking about what he was hearing. I told him to shut up because I was tired of hearing it.

At around 11PM, the situation became more bizarre. I had nodded off, with my head propped on a log. Then suddenly, a large crash could be heard from across the lake. My brother and I both got to our feet and grabbed our shotgun and 44. mag. and walked to the edge of the lake to see if we could spot what had made the noise. After a minute of staring into the pitch-black night, we decided to go back and lay down. We both thought that it must have been a loose bolder that had fallen off the face of the ridge. That was until my brother told me to stop in an abrupt whisper. 'Look there', he said pointing towards the ridge to our left. It was then that I realized my brother really was hearing things all night long. About 100 yards away from us, in the tree line, was a figure that looked to be at least 10 feet tall with glowing golden eyes. Paralyzed with fear, my brother and I watched as the large figure swayed back and forth, never taking his eyes off of us. 'Let's get the hell out of here!', my brother yelled while shooting a round from his 44. mag into the lake. At this point, the figure stopped and stared. Its eyes seemed to get larger and brighter. Then, just as quick, the eyes were gone.

We immediately started stoking the fire as fast as we could. Not knowing if the figure would return, we decided to stay up all night taking turns adding logs to the fire. After an hour or so, we heard a faint rustling in the brush. The rustling then stopped, when all of a sudden this thing roared out the most terrible scream that I had ever heard.

We grabbed our guns and gear. It was time to leave! We both started to sprint into the darkness with our lights turned off. We ran into the woods for at least 10 minutes, until the two of us were out of breath and stopped. We turned on our lights to find the path and listened for the creature. It was moving towards us! We could hear the pounding of footsteps and branches snapping. This time the lights stayed on as we ran non-stop, tripping over obstacles, until we reached the car. The two of us threw our gear into the vehicle and locked the doors behind us. My brother was shaking from fear, and fumbling with the keys. Just as he got the keys into the ignition, a loud scream from the creature blasted from the darkness. He started the car and gunned it.

I don't know WTF that thing was. All I can say is that I will never return to those woods to find out." BP

NOTE: I was finally able to contact the witness. From the information I was given, I believe the area was in the higher regions of the Monongahela National Forest, possibly near Gaudineer Knob or Bald Knob. The incident occurred in the summer of 2017. BTW, I believe it may have been a Bigfoot, but I wouldn't rule out an upright canine, because of the eye color. There have been historical reports of both in the general area. Lon

'CREEPY OLD LADY' Encountered in Woods Near Green Bay, Wisconsin

A Wisconsin woman tells me about her encounter with a 'creepy old lady' in the woods near her home outside of Green Bay. The description was of a zombie-like appearance. Weird!

I received the following account:

"My story takes place back in the winter of 2009. I was 15 years old at the time and living outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin. There were these woods by my house that my friends and I used to spend a lot of time in. These woods were massive. If you didn't know your way around, it would be easy to get lost in them. But it was at this point in my teen years when most of my friends lost interest in spending time in the woods. But I on the other hand, always enjoyed being in nature. And as a result, I was spending a lot of time by myself in these woods.

If I remember correctly, it was a cold and dreary day in February. I was walking through the woods, listening to my MP3 player and smoking a cigarette. But then out of nowhere, I noticed something moving around in the distance. At first, I thought it was maybe a deer or some sort of animal. But then as I took a closer look, I noticed it wasn't an animal...it was a person. Now one thing I should mention is, that these woods were well-known for being isolated and vastly empty; void of all humans. Aside from my friends and I, not once did I ever encounter another human being in the area.

Instead of running away, turning around, or walking in the opposite direction, for whatever reason, I wasn't afraid and decided to approach this random mysterious person. I took off my headphones and shouted, "Hey you!" What would happen next would shock me to the core.

I came face-to-face with the creepiest old lady I've ever seen in my life. She had thick, wild, and frizzy gray hair. She was wearing what looked like a brown coat, along with a dark blue dress underneath. And along with that, she was wearing what looked like sandals. The weather outside was far too cold for sandals. I immediately got a bad vibe from her. I took a few steps back. Nervously, for whatever reason, I said, "Oh hey, I was just passing through." I honestly didn't know what else to say. This lady had the most frightening face I've ever seen. I'm not trying to sound mean...but she looked like some sort of demon. Her eyes were wide open and bulging out of her head. She looked like she was high on meth or something.

She then began aggressively sprinting towards me and yelling in a somewhat creature-like manner. For an old lady, she certainly had some impressive running abilities. I began running as fast as I possibly could in the opposite direction. But surprisingly, she managed to keep up with me. And trust me, at age 15, I was a super fast runner. Then for whatever reason, I randomly decided to climb up a tree, to get away from her. I climbed up the tree as high as I possibly could. Down below, this creepy old lady attempted to climb up the tree but failed to do so. I screamed at her, saying things like, "What do you want?! Leave me alone!" I really didn't know what to do. I and this old lady proceeded to stare at each other for about an hour. She had a terrifying look in her eyes as if she was possessed. I'll never forget that look. She looked like she wanted to kill me. She kept making strange sounds, and I noticed that most of her teeth looked rotten, and many were missing. But then, out of nowhere, there was a noise in some nearby bushes, and she went aggressively running towards it. Her behavior was almost zombie-like. But this gave me a chance to run away. I climbed down out of the tree, ran as fast as I could out of the woods, and returned home.

The next day, I told my friends about what had happened, but they didn't believe me. We went searching for the lady, but couldn't find her. What baffled me was...what was an old lady doing in the middle of the woods? Where did she come from? Why was she running after me? What happened to her? To this day, there are still so many unanswered questions. But even to this very day, I can still see her face in my mind. Her face actually haunts me. And that encounter is what created my fear of 'creepy old ladies.'" SG

CHILLING BIGFOOT ENCOUNTERS: Mt. Rushmore & Ape Canyon

The following accounts are some examples of harrowing Bigfoot / Sasquatch encounters at well-known locations. One was a witness account sent to me about an encounter near Mt. Rushmore and the others involve incidents at the infamous Ape Canyon near Mt. St. Helens:

"Hello, Sir. I recently started reading your site after looking for information on Bigfoot in South Dakota. You asked for real-life encounters. I hope this fits the bill.

My family had a scary confrontation in 1992 while RVing. We camped near Wind Cave National Park several times while I was a boy, but stopped going in that part of South Dakota after our experience with something unknown.

We normally camped in the early Summer, but for whatever reason my Father decided we'd go a few weeks before I went back to school. We always enjoyed going into Wind Cave and would spend a full day there. We'd then spend the rest of the week around the RV campground. This particular year we camped further away from Wind Cave in the vicinity of Hill City, not far from Mt. Rushmore. The area was surrounded by thick pine forest and very rugged.

It was a Saturday night and very calm around our campsite. Many people had left during the day, so there were few kids running around. Around 10:30 PM I decided to go to bed. I was bored and my parents were entertaining another couple. I laid down and turned the radio on while I drifted to sleep.

The only thing I remember next is my Mother making lots of noise while inside the RV. I sat up and watched my Father looking for something in a storage bin. The next thing I noticed was him holding his pistol. I was wide awake now, wondering what was going on. I started to ask but was quickly told to be quiet by both of them. They were standing by the door when suddenly something slammed into the back of the RV. I thought someone had hit us with a vehicle. The window in the back was smashed and the curtain was on the floor. I moved towards my parents when again something slammed into the back of the RV, at the same time a deep rumbling sound came from the same direction. I never thought my Mother could scream so loud. My Father raised the pistol and fired through the window opening. We waited quietly for something to happen. Whatever it was must have run off.

By that time, someone was yelling from outside wanting to know what was going on. I think it was someone from the campground. My Father went outside to talk to whoever it was. My Mother was very scared and was visibly shaking. She just grabbed me and squeezed me tight. My Father came back into the RV and said that we were leaving. He grabbed whatever gear was outside, threw it in the RV and we were off. None of us talked much as we drove home, which was about a 4 hour drive.

A few days later my Mother told me what happened that night. My parents were just about ready to go to bed. She said it was about 11:45 PM and she was cleaning up outside when she noticed something large on 2 legs run from behind the RV into the forest. My Father told her that it was probably a bear. Then he saw it duck out and then back into the woods. There wasn't much light other than that from a lantern and the back window from inside the RV. He told her that it was no bear. By that time they were in the RV and heard deep guttural grunts coming from the creature. My Father then slowly opened the door. It was standing no more than 10 ft. away looking directly at him. He quickly slammed the door shut and went looking for the pistol.

My Father has never said much about whatever it was, but from his later descriptions I believe he confronted a Bigfoot.

He described it as covered head to toe with thick dark hair with a wide nose and piercing yellow eyes that glowed in the light. He estimated the height at over 6 ft. and that it weighed over 400 lbs with huge arms and legs. That's basically all he ever said. He refuses to talk to anyone else about it.

Ape Canyon is actually a gorge along the northeast shoulder of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. Of course, the name “Ape Canyon” didn’t come from just anywhere. The name refers to a supposed encounter between a group of miners and several 'apemen' in 1924, an event eventually integrated into Bigfoot folklore.

Fred Beck, one of the miners, claimed they shot and possibly killed at least one of the creatures. The death resulted in an attack on the miners' cabin. According to Beck, the men had just settled down to sleep for the night when they were awakened by an attack on their cabin, during which the creatures bombarded it with rocks and tried to break in. The fighting continued all night long, but none of the men were seriously hurt. By morning, an eerie quiet had entered the camp and as the men cautiously exited the cabin, they saw an ape-man in the distance. They shot at the beast several times and it finally fell over the cliff into the canyon. It was the only one of their attackers they would see. The men packed their belongings in a hurry, leaving most things behind, and made their way home, promising each other not to speak of the incident to anyone. The pact didn't last long because the story was leaked and within a few weeks it was reported in the July 16, 1924 issue of The Oregonian, which dubbed the beasts the 'Ape-Men of Mount St. Helens.'

There was another mysterious incident in Ape Canyon that took place in 1950. It involved world ski champion Jim Carter, who disappeared while on a ski trip in the Canyon. He was with some companions and then went off by himself to take some photos. But only his camera case was found. Searchers later reported finding his ski tracks in the snow. Carter had apparently taken off at an incredible rate of speed performing jumps and maneuvers that no skier would have taken unless he was very frightened or being pursued. One of the searchers reported an eerie feeling that he was being 'watched' the whole time. Carter's disappearance remains a mystery.

Legendary Mt. St. Helens Apemen Called Legitimate

The legend of the apemen of Mt. St. Helens returns, like hay fever, with summer weather.

The story of the apemen of the beautiful conical mountain situated in the Cascade Range of Southwest Washington, is a favorite in the area, but it just may have some basis in fact.

There is more basis to support it than Nepal's Yeti or northern California's "Big Foot" and probably as much as Loch Ness' monster.

Last summer, two different Portland groups who visited the region reported sighting the monsters, usually described as from 7 to 10 feet tall, hairy and either white or beige-colored.

Three persons in a car on a lonely forest road said they saw one of the creatures when it flashed across the headlight beams of their car near the wilderness area which includes such places as "Ape Canyon."

A Portland couple fishing on the Lewis River south of the mountain saw a huge beige figure "bigger than any human" amble off into the brush.

Old timers aren't surprised, just amused. The apeman legend actually is older than the white man's habitation of the Pacific Northwest.

Indian Legend

Forestry employes have investigated many reports of the strange creatures. According to Indian legend, the "apes" were the ferocious Selahtik Indians, a band of renegades much like giant apes in appearance who lived like wild animals in the secluded caves of the Cascades.

The first recorded encounter of the apes with white men was in 1924. A group of five prospectors rushed into Kelso to report that a group of great, ape-like creatures had attacked them in the middle of the night.

The miners said they had been working a mine on the east slopes of Mt. St. Helens. During the daytime, they saw some of the apes and fired at them to halt an apparent attack. One of the apes appeared to have been hit and rolled into a deep ravine. That night, according to the account, the apemen hurled rocks onto the cabin and "danced and screamed until daylight."

Then came the "great ape hunt 0f 1924." Law enforcement officers and a flock of newspapermen made up a posse that went into the area. The armed searchers fired at anything that moved, so the report went. They returned to tell of finding huge footprints, but no apes.

The legend grew from that point for several years, then subsided with only sporadic reports of traces of the apes. Responsible persons, experienced mountaineers and skiers, have given credence to the story.

Bob Lee of Portland, a leader of the 1961 Himalayan expedition and adviser to last year's Himalayan expedition, said last year he had a strange experience. Lee has never claimed to have seen the apes, but said "there was something strange on the high slopes of the mountain."

He was a member of a party that searched for Jim Carter, an experienced skier and mountaineer, who vanished on the mountain in 1950. His disappearance remains a mystery.

Somebody Watched

At the time, Lee was a member of the Seattle Mountain Search and Rescue unit. He described the search for Carter as "the most eerie experience I ever had." He said that every time he was cut off from the rest of the search party he felt "somebody was watching me."

Carter, he said, had climbed the mountain with some companions on a warm, clear Sunday. He left the group to take a picture and said he would ski to the left of the group. He was never seen again.

His tracks, however, indicated that he suddenly took off down the mountain in a wild, death-defying run that no experienced skier would make — unless he was pursued, Lee said.

The track went in the direction of Ape Canyon. But no trace of Carter or his equipment was found although the area was combed for two weeks. Lee recalled stories of about 25 persons who claim they had encountered the monsters during a 20 year period.

The canyon named for the apes, is a lonely, ominous spot in a wild area. It extends to a point near Ape Cave, thought to be the longest unitary lava tube in the world.

There have been many reports of footprints in the area. Some are described as being about 18 inches long and seemingly human.

Unless the creatures are really fuzzy throwbacks, the lost Indian tribe theory seems most likely to some of the fans of the mystery. It has given rise to some suggestions, one of which is to leave well enough alone. The government might take over and shove benefits and subsidies at them — retroactive to the Ice Age.

And that, as well as costing a lot of money, would ruin a very good legend.

Beck detailed his claims in a 22-page book written in 1967 titled I Fought The Apemen of Mt. St. Helens, in which he identified the creatures as 'mystical beings from another dimension'. Beck explained that he had experienced psychic premonitions and visions his entire life of which the apemen were only one component.

William Halliday, director of the Western Speleological Survey, claimed in his 1983 pamphlet Ape Cave and the Mount St. Helens Apes[image error] that the miner’s assailants were actually local youths throwing rocks, which camp counselors bringing kids on hiking trips to the Canyon also tried to impart.

In July 2013, the Dark Waters Paranormal Group claimed on their Facebook page that Ape Canyon and remnants of the original cabin had been found. They held back directions to the location:

All surface evidence of the cabin is gone. A 1936 trail map told us that one could see the cabin from the trail. But that was only 12 years after the incident. In 1968, Fred Beck had heard that the cabin had burnt to the ground. In 1972, hikers told Peter Byrne that they had visited the cabin. Today, it’s rock, steep slope and trees.

The nature of the site carries a high probability of very little human impact. The area has never been commercially logged as there are so few trees and these are very difficult to get out. The danger of traversing the area makes a high rate of human camp sites unlikely...

..the excitement began with the discovery of the wire, about 16″ long with a coiled loop at one end, like for a bailing or a handle, sticking vertically in the ground.. The excitement grew with a nail, a shank nail about 4 inches long...jumping up and down and yelling and vigorous hand shaking ensued with the spoon. A single spoon. Just an old spoon. About 6″ underground...

But this was the clincher. We started finding more and more nails and finally got to a rotten horizontal log, again about 6″ underground WITH THE NAILS DRIVEN IN TO IT. As best we can tell, we probably found the long, 20 foot side of the cabin, guessing the uphill side.

'SUPERMAN' Remains In Benedict Canyon

One of the spookiest stories of a celebrity ghost involves the alleged entity of actor George Reeves, best known to a generation of pre-adolescent Baby Boomers for playing the Man of Steel on TV's Adventures of Superman throughout the 1950s, and whose dark and mysterious tale was dramatized in the 2006 film Hollywoodland.

Although charming and likable, Reeves was also naughtier than his clean-cut TV alter ego and enjoyed all the illicit perks of the Hollywood nightlife before being found shot in the head in the bedroom of his modest Benedict Canyon home (1579 Benedict Canyon Drive, Los Angeles) in 1959. Los Angeles police ultimately ruled Reeves' death a suicide and blamed it on his inability to get an acting job playing anything other than the caped superhero.

The cops glossed over the fact that Reeves was launching a renewed career as a TV director and dodged the fact that the actor's longtime acquaintance who bought the Benedict Canyon home for him, was insanely jealous after Reeves dumped her for another woman. She was married to a powerful studio insider with connections to both the police and organized crime, who quietly cleaned things up when showbiz types landed in serious trouble. Then there was the lovely young club-hopping socialite Reeves planned to marry whose account of the night Reeves died had more holes in it than the actor did by the end of the evening.

Whether suicide or murder, all the unanswered questions may have left one very restless spirit in Benedict Canyon. In 1969, a decade after Reeves' death, rumors circulated about some unusual happenings at the former Superman's home, but his lover Toni Mannix—who inherited it from her ex-lover and had struggled to keep it rented for years—refused to discuss it.

The renters revealed that one night while entertaining guests in the living room, they heard noises. The bedroom—Reeves' bedroom—previously neat and orderly, was a mess: linens torn off the bed, clothes strewn around. They straightened the room and returned downstairs to find that all the drinks on the coffee tables had been moved to the kitchen. Another time, the couple's German shepherd barked at the bedroom door furiously, then suddenly cowered and slunk away as the tenants peeked inside and discovered the bed had been moved across the room.

The last straw came around 3 a.m. one summer morning when the apparent ghost of Reeves, dressed in his TV Superman costume, appeared in the living room. Within the hour, the tenants had moved out.

Daily Planet editor Perry White's oft-quoted exclamation "Great Casesar's Ghost!" might now be modified, exchanging the Roman emperor for the Last Son of Krypton.

The Afterlife of George Reeves

Actor George Reeves died at 1:59 am on June 16, 1959. Not the comic book character, of course, but the man who personified the "real" Superman for an entire generation of television fans. Even though the initial coroner’s report listed Reeves’ death as an "indicated suicide", after more than four decades there are many who do not believe that he killed himself. The death remains an unsolved mystery.

Could this be why ghostly phenomena have been reported at the former Reeves house ever since? Many believe that the ghostly appearances by the actor lend credence to the idea that he was murdered. Over the years, occupants of the house have been plagued by not only the sound of a single gunshot that echoes in the darkness but strange lights and even the apparition of George Reeves.

After Reeves’ death, realtors attempted to sell the house to settle the actor’s estate. Unfortunately, though, they had trouble. Occupants would not stay long because they would report inexplicable noises in the upstairs bedroom where George had been killed. When they would go to investigate the sounds, they would find the room was not as they had left it. Often, the bedding would be torn off, clothing would be strewn about and some reported the ominous odor of gunpowder in the air. One tenant also reported that his German Shepherd would stand in the doorway of the room and would bark furiously as though he could see something his owners could not. There is also documentation of an extraordinary occurrence when two Los Angeles sheriffs were assigned to watch the house after neighbors reported hearing screams, gunshots, and lights going on and off during the night.

New occupants moved out quickly, becoming completely unnerved after encountering Reeves’ ghost, decked out in his Superman costume! The first couple who spotted him were not the first, nor the last, to see him either. Many later residents saw him too and one couple became so frightened that they moved out of the house the same night. Later, the ghost was even reported on the front lawn by neighboring residents.

In the 1980s, while the house was being used as a set for a television show, the ghost made another startling appearance. He was seen by several of the actors and crew members before abruptly vanishing, creating yet another mystery in this strange and convoluted case!

George Reeves still reportedly haunts the home where he allegedly committed suicide/was possibly murdered...depending on who you believe. In late 2012, a nearby resident reported that they continued to hear strange noises coming from the property and that Reeves once appeared to them in full Superman attire on the street in front of the house.

JAPAN: HUMANOID & CRYPTID Encounters & Legends

I received an email from a reader in Japan who asked if I had any knowledge of actual cryptid / humanoid encounter reports or activity in his country. He stated that there were hundreds of spirit sightings and ghost legends, but he rarely heard of people encountering unknown creatures. It was an intriguing challenge, so I promised to conduct some research and post my findings. The following anecdotes and stories are a few interesting accounts:

A FOREIGN WOMAN IN THE HOLLOW BOAT

Tokagawa Shogunate, Japan - February 22, 1803

Possibly the first written account referencing alien symbols and a possible humanoid encounter is a story in Japanese folklore. The story takes place on February 22nd in the spring of 1803. Offshore from a beach called Hara-yadori in the territory of Ogasawara Etchuu-no-kami (4000 koku'), who occupied a position named "Yoriai-seki" of Tokagawa shogunate at that time, a kind of boat was observed from the beach. People approached this boat using their small boats and eventually caught it. They towed it to the beach.

The boat was round and resembled a kind of kou-hako (a box used to burn incense). Its diameter was more than 3 ken (5.45 in). On the upper part of the boat, there were glass-fitted shoji (windows with lattice) and they were shielded by chan (a kind of waterproofed putty made from pine-tree gum). The bottom of this ship was reinforced by separated iron plates. This structure may protect the boat from destruction by sunken rocks. Since the glass-fitted shoji was transparent, the people could see inside the boat, where they found a woman with strange features. Her hair and eyebrows were red, and her face was pink. It seemed that long white hair was added to her original hair.

This foreign woman held one square box whose size was about two shaku (60 cm) in her hands. It seemed that this box was very important to her because she held this box constantly, and she prohibited anyone from approaching it.

The objects found in this boat were investigated by the people. There was about two shou (3.6 liters) of water in the small bottle. There were two pieces of carpet, cake-like food, and kneaded meat. While people discussed what to do about this boat, the woman observed them peacefully.

Another similar description of an incident was found:

On March 24, 1803, a strange boat drifted ashore on a beach named Haratono-hama in Hitachi state in Japan. The boat was hollow and its shape was similar to a rice-cooking pot. It had a kind of rimmed edge at the center-level part of the boat. In the part above this edge, the boat was painted in black and had four small windows on four sides. All shoji (windows with lattice) were shielded by chan (a kind of waterproof putty made from pine-tree gum). The lower part of the boat was reinforced by steel bars. These bars looked to be made of Western-made iron of the highest quality. The height of the boat was one jyou, two shaku (3.64m) and its diameter was one jyou, eight shaku (5.45m).

A woman (or girl) was found inside this boat and her age appeared around twenty. She was about five shaku (1.5m) tall and her skin was white as snow. Her long hair vividly hung on her back. Her facial features were incomparably beautiful. Her clothes were strange and unrecognizable and her language was not understood by anyone. She held a small box in her hands and prohibited anyone from approaching this box.

JAPANESE CRYPTID WOLVES

Reports of small wolf-like canids came out of the Chichibu district of Japan in 1998. At least seventy people reported wolf howls in 1994, and there have been at least twenty-six claims of wolves seen from 1908 to 1978, all in the Aomori and Oita regions in northernmost Japan, not to mention prints, howls and scat. Several sightings have also been made on the Kii peninsula. In 1936a man in Hongu supposedly captured a wolf pup, but released it in case a parent attempted to retrieve it. The Honshu wolf (Canis lupus hodophylax) a dwarf subspecies of wolf just over a foot tall and deemed extinct since 1905 due to a rabies epidemic, fits the general description. Attempts to record wolves howling, by playing wolf howls to prompt them in 1995 were unsuccessful. Possibly these sightings are just misidentification of feral dogs. However, though Japan is heavily populated, its mountainous terrain would make it possible for a hidden population of wolves – in this case, small wolves - to survive without public acknowledgment.

THE KAPPAS

SLIMY FOOTPRINTS

At around 11 PM on August 1, 1984, in the town of Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, a squid fisherman named Ryu Shirozaki was walking home from the local pier after work. As he passed near the Kuta River, he came upon a small group of children playing at the water's edge. While it was not entirely uncommon to encounter people fishing in the river at night, it was rather surprising to see youngsters there.

As Shirozaki approached the children, he was struck by how bizarre they appeared in the moonlight. He could make out swarthy faces, unusually spindly arms and legs, and glistening skin. Suspicious, Shirozaki called out to them as he neared, but they seemed startled and quickly disappeared into the water.

The next morning when he returned to the same spot, Shirozaki discovered a set of moist, teardrop-shaped footprints on the nearby pavement. The prints, which appeared to consist of a slimy substance that had begun to coagulate under the hot morning sun, stretched for about 20 meters. Each footprint measured 22 centimeters (about 10 in) long and 12 centimeters (5 in) wide, and they were spaced about 50 to 60 centimeters (about 2 ft) apart.

Shirozaki and a few curious onlookers immediately suspected the footprints belonged to a kappa. People began to gather around as the news spread quickly through town, and all agreed the prints belonged to a kappa. In the minds of many residents, the footprints confirmed the existence of the river imps they knew through local legends.

When police forensic investigators arrived on the scene, they determined that the slimy footprints consisted of an unknown secretion. They took a sample to the lab for analysis, but the results unfortunately turned out to be inconclusive because the sample was too small. The police eventually dropped their investigation, and the mystery of the slimy footprints was never solved.

THE UNCLEAN GUEST

Another recent kappa encounter occurred on June 30, 1991, in the town of Saito in Miyazaki prefecture, when an office worker named Mitsugu Matsumoto and his wife Junko returned home for the evening. Upon opening the front door, the Matsumotos were confronted with a strange smell inside their home. Inside, they found dozens of small, wet footprints around the front door and in the hallway, bathroom, and two tatami rooms. At first, they suspected a burglar, but they soon realized nothing had been stolen.

The police briefly surveyed the house but found nothing except a floor soiled by 30 footprints, each measuring about 7 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide, and having 4 or 5 toes. To Matsumoto, the footprints did not look human, nor did they appear to belong to any animal he could imagine.

Later that night, as Mrs. Matsumoto was putting laundry away, she discovered an unusual orange stain on some clothing. The next morning, as Matsumoto inspected the house more closely, he discovered a deposit of orange liquid on the portable stereo in the tatami room. He took a sample to the local public health center for analysis, and the results indicated the liquid had an extremely high iron content and a chemical composition resembling spring water.

Troubled by the incident, Matsumoto decided to visit a shaman. After listening to Matsumoto's story, the shaman encouraged him not to worry, explaining that the kappa indigenous to the nearby swamp enjoyed playing the occasional prank on local residents. The kappa were harmless, the shaman told him.

Harmless, perhaps, but Matsumoto found the kappa difficult to clean up after. He tried using detergent, paint thinner, and gasoline to remove the footprints and orange stains, but nothing seemed to work.

TSUCHINOKO - THE CRYPTID SERPENT

In 2000, Yoshii, Okayama, Japan was in the news, as people were flocking to the region to hunt for the tsuchinoko, a chirping reptile-like cryptid bearing at least some resemblance to a snake or a long, thick lizard. A 20 million yen reward from the Yoshii Municipal Government was the source of all the excitement.

Tsuchinoko fever hit Yoshii on May 21 after a farmer cutting grass swore he saw a snake-like creature with a face resembling the cartoon cat Doraemon slither across his field. The farmer slashed the creature with his weed whipper, but it fled into a nearby stream and escaped. Four days later, 72-year-old Hideko Takashima was talking with a couple of friends in Yoshii when she found what she thought was one of the creatures lying dead next to the stream a tsuchinoko reportedly had dived into to escape from the farmer. She picked it up and buried it.

Yoshii Municipal Government officials heard the rumors of a tsuchinoko and headed out to look over the local woman’s find. They exhumed the body and forwarded it to Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare to be examined. Kuniyasu Sato, the professor who analyzed the reptile, said that the animal may indeed have been the tsuchinoko, but “scientifically speaking, it was a kind of snake.”

Meanwhile, Mitsuko Arima, an 82-year-old from Yoshii, says she saw a Tsuchinoko swimming along a river on the morning of June 15.

“I was surprised. I just pointed at it and asked ‘Who are you? Who are you?’ It didn’t answer me but just stared. It had a round face and didn’t take its eyes off me. I can still see the eyes now. They were big and round and it looked like they were floating on the water,” Arima says. “I’ve lived over 80 years, but I’d never seen anything like that in my life.”

THE FANGED HUMANOID

Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan - February 23, 1975

Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., two seven-year-old boys named Kono and Yamahata watched a luminous orange UFO approach Kofu, Japan while making a "ticking" sound. It landed on three ball-shaped legs in a nearby vineyard. The object was a domed disc, five meters in diameter and six feet high. The boys got very close to it, and discovered the surface of the object was silver colored and had strange characters embossed on its surface.

A ladder extended out of the craft down to the ground, and a humanoid creature slightly over four feet tall disembarked. It wore a silver uniform and carried something that looked like a gun. His skin was dark brown and he had large pointed ears, but his large head had no facial features: no eyes, nose or mouth. It merely had wrinkles on the "face" and three silvery two-inch long "fangs" where the mouth should be. Both boys could see one more smaller humanoid in the cockpit. The being that had emerged reached out and touched one of the boys, patting him twice on the shoulder and uttering words "like a tape recorder running backward." The boy who had been touched sat down, paralyzed either by the touch or fear, but his companion took him on his back and carried him from the vineyard. They then ran to one of the boy's homes and informed their parents, who could at first see the orange light pulsating in the vineyard. Then it disappeared as they watched. Two concrete posts were found pushed over at the landing site.

LEGENDS OF HORROR From the Sultanate of Brunei

Individuals who have claimed to have encountered supernatural entities at different locations in the Sultanate of Brunei. Similar sightings can be traced back to the legends of old, centuries ago, but its true existence will forever remain a mystery.

THE WHITE SANDS

Most Bruneians nationwide are familiar with this urban legend. Countless tales of horror have been whispered in the air and some, experienced first-hand, the terrifying occurrences in this place. Peter, a local businessman, was more than happy to share his story and it revolved around ‘the white sands’ leading up to. Road users often pass by this area when heading off to the Belait District or neighboring Malaysia.

Peter claims that his close encounter happened on the eve of New Year as he traveled home to be with his family in Seria. Festive songs played on the radio as he sang along to the medleys, grateful that he would finally spend New Year with his loved ones for the first time in five years. Not long after he reached the area, a disturbing sight caught his attention. Glancing at the counter clock, it was a little after I was. “Why is she walking alone at this hour?” Peter asked himself. He stopped the car by the roadside and approached the seemingly oblivious woman who continued walking even after Peter called out to her. Concerned that the woman might need help or a ride, he attempted to speak to the woman. “Excuse me miss, do you need help?” Peter asked. She stopped walking and turned slowly towards him. Her long black locks covered her pale face as she gestured towards a junction and pointed to a deserted rest house nearby. Seeing as though something was amiss, Peter stepped back and asked, “Are you alright? Are you heading that way?” The woman simply nodded.

“Please let me give you a ride,” he said and opened the front passenger door for her. As he turned to face the woman, she suddenly disappeared and was nowhere in sight. Shivers ran down his spine as he stared at the pitch-black darkness, the silence becoming somewhat deafening. Instead of panicking, he drove off and continued his journey without ever looking back. “It frightened me out of my wits,” Peter said before concluding his story.

THE FISHERMAN’S FRIEND

A common pastime amongst people of all ages, this famous sport has provided an excellent opportunity for families and friends to bond and spend quality time together. Such was the intention of a young student who invited his friends for a ‘boys' night out’ fishing along one of the well-known rivers in the district.

In this story, Khairul re-calls the horrifying events, which occurred on that fateful night. As they set out on their journey at quarter past midnight, the group of three were feeling absolutely jubilant, having just completed their public examinations. The humid clouds, which swelled above them, did not look promising and projected an impending thunderstorm. That of course, failed to hinder the group’s journey. After setting up their fishing rods, they decided to hunt for their quarry near the jetty and waited patiently for the ‘rewards’.

“It was a dark, eerie night and although my instincts told me something wasn’t right, I didn’t want to be a party pooper,” Khairul said.

An hour or so passed when something tugged heavily at the fishing reel. “Guys, I think we caught something big!”

Samad shouted excitedly but as he attempted to pull in his catch, he found – nothing. “Maybe you didn’t place the bait properly,” Shahrol suggested. Confused and bewildered by the strange episode, Samad took out a tackle box to replace his reel and used live prawns instead of worms. “Hope this will work better,” Samad said and cast his bait into the river. Out of nowhere, a gust of cold wind blew gently in his direction. He turned his gaze towards Khairul, who was sitting quietly by the riverbank. “Hey Khai, you alright?” but received no response. “What’s wrong with this fellow?” Samad asked himself and decided to approach his seemingly quiet friend. While he was talking to Khairul, two men emerged from the parking lot. At first, Samad thought they were anglers looking to enjoy a fishing expedition but as he looked closely, he noticed that the two men were none other than his buddies. “If Khairul is there, who in the world is beside me?” Samad thought and without thinking, he ran towards his friends without looking back.

Samad struggled to contain himself and was practically hysterical. He told them about his ordeal and instead of comforting him, they laughed. “There’s no one here besides us. I think you watch too many horror films, my friend,” Khairul said. Furious and agitated, Samad marched into the parking lot and chose to wait for his ‘ignorant’ friends in the car. The two continued fishing and were not at all bothered by the incident. As they laughed away at the jokes and tales of their youths, they were distracted by what seemed to be a thousand flickering sounds. To their amazement, a shoal of fish splashed furiously against the water as if it were sending a signal. At that instant, something tugged at their fishing reel but instead of catching a big fish as they had anticipated, an amputated head hung on their hook, covered in dark, murky slime. Shahrol instantly tossed the rod into the river and watched as the head floated towards the jetty.

The two stood frozen in their tracks as they caught sight of a ’supernatural’ being dressed in black sitting by the jetty without a head. It then leaped into the water and crawled to shore before vanishing into the woods. Without hesitating, the two ran towards their car leaving all the equipment behind. Samad was sleeping contently in the back seat as they drove off. The return home turned out to be a bizarre odyssey as they began hearing disembodied voices coming from the back. As the two boys turned around, they saw the paranormal entity clinging to the back of the vehicle. Shahrol turned on the radio and recited prayers to ward off the spirit. None of the three coveted to sleep alone that night.

“This episode has triggered months of restless nights for us and sometimes, we sense a strange presence especially when either three of us are alone. We have definitely learned a lot from this and will probably go fishing only in the afternoons,” Khairul said before concluding the group’s terrifying tale.

THE HAUNTED HIGHWAY

‘Pontianaks’ or vampires are basically the most notorious group of paranormal entities and their popularity is evident through their portrayals in horror films and fiction movies. In this story, Ahmad, a man in his mid-twenties, claims to have encountered these strange entities while driving home from Tutong Town. This unfortunate incident triggered months of restlessness and paranoia yet here, he recalls the sequence of events leading up to that fateful night as he faced his worst nightmare.

Driving down the highway, Ahmad tried to adjust his focus and eyes on the road as fatigue and lethargy took control of his body. The long working hours at his new job had taken its toll and left him practically exhausted. After several failed attempts to keep himself awake, Ahmad finally gave in and decided to stop at the side of the road to get some shuteye before continuing his journey. As he turned to make a stop, his eyes caught sight of a strange looking ‘object’ in the middle of the road that seemed to resemble a log but simply shrugged it off as nothing out of the ordinary. However, as Ahmad peered closer at the weird object, he could make up some facial features but it was too dark to tell whether his imagination was beginning to run wild. Despite the warning which echoed in his mind to ‘run away’, he simply refused to steer clear of whatever was on that road.

Curiosity got the better of him and he took out a torch light out of the glove compartment to investigate what it really was. As Ahmad approached the ‘object’, it laid so disturbingly still as if waiting to strike. He suddenly stood frozen in his tracks as the ‘mysterious object’ lifted its head slowly in his direction and let out an ear-piercing cry. Fear overtook the very core of Ahmad’s mind and he knew instantly what the ’strange’ object was. He struggled to summon his inner strength to face the terror staring him right in the eye. “This was something that you could only see in horror films,” Ahmad said. He watched the terror unfold as the paranormal entity, commonly known as ‘pontianaks’ to the locals, crawled to the side of the road and began creeping towards a lamp post. Within split seconds, it swiftly moved towards him and all he could do was recite prayers to ward off the spirit. The ‘pontianak’ stared at him intently before disappearing into thin air. The memory of such a disturbing image, till this day, seems difficult to erase and has changed his philosophy on the existence of paranormal entities.

“I think it’s a good idea to share my experience with fellow readers on this issue. Whether they choose to believe it or not, is of course up to them. However, this is not something you simply make up. It took me quite a while to try and forget this horrifying incident but I decided to instead use it as a lesson in life,” he said before concluding his story.

THE UNINVITED

Legends of old have it that an individual who possesses a fragile spirit will most likely encounter supernatural entities and although no evidence of such a claim exists, some have unfortunately experienced it firsthand for reasons they cannot phantom. This story revolves around an American expatriate who was kind enough to share his ordeal before leaving the country for good.

David loved Brunei and considered it as his second home. He even planned to settle down with his then fiancé living in Kuala Belait and thus, frequently traveled back and forth to visit his better half. Working in a highly demanding field, which required every ounce of his expertise, commuting from the capital to the Belait District daily was painstaking and inconvenient but he longed to put a balance between his work and fiancé. Days and sometimes, even months at a time, the pressuring demands of his career began to take its toll on their relationship.

One fateful night, they got into a heated argument and his fiancé threatened to commit suicide. After several attempts to call her hand phone, which went unanswered, he grabbed his car keys and drove hastily to Kuala Belait. “Please answer the phone, please,” David pleaded. He then began blaming himself should anything unforeseen happen to his fiancé and could not imagine life without her.

He then approached the one-lane road and focused on the dark, eerie highway, where no street lamps were erected. Suddenly, the radio reception started to deteriorate and David simply thought it was due to the location. A few minutes later, the car engine began to quiver and decelerate from 120 to 80km/h. “What in heaven’s name could possibly go wrong now?” he exclaimed as it was a brand new car. “Do not break down here please, of all places!” David said while glancing around at the pitch-black darkness without a single soul in sight.

He pulled himself together and tried to dismiss all negative thoughts coming to mind. As he attempted to lean on the arm rest, David caught sight of what seemed to be a ’shadow’, in the corner of his eye. Without thinking, he turned to confirm his worst fear and indeed, there was a weird ‘figure’ sitting beside him in the front passenger seat. The entity’s long black strands of hair covered its face as ’she’ repeatedly let out a blood-curling laugh. Shivers ran down his spine and a thousand thoughts raced through the businessman’s mind. Given the fact that he is a free-thinker, no religion or prayers could save him then as he knew none. David thought of calling someone, practically anyone but his phone was in the middle of the dashboard. Terrified that the ‘entity’ would grab his hands, he continued driving, hoping, praying that a street lamp would appear with some visible ’signs’ of life.

A few minutes on, David’s instincts sent a warning jolt through his body. He could sense that the ’spirit’ was staring at him and his heart raced with sheer trepidation. Straight ahead, visible strokes of light could be seen and he stepped on the gas pedals hoping to reach the area before something happened to him. That seemed to only make things worse.

With the streetlights, he could clearly see his ‘uninvited passenger’. The events that followed would remain embossed in his memories forever. The ’spirit’ extended its arms to grab his shoulders. He immediately stepped on the brakes and ran out of the car. David refused to turn around for fear that ‘it’ was nearby but decided to fight his fear after remembering his fiance.

“After I saw it was gone, I went back into my car and drove off like never before,” David said. After reconciling with his fiance, he retold his frightful story and later discovered that the entity was in fact, a Pontianak. “This has altered my complete outlook in life and I now refuse to travel anywhere alone if it’s 3 in the morning,” he said while giggling but behind the laughter, the impact of that encounter could be visibly seen through his eyes.
