I'm a Special Snowflake.

Name a CD you own that no-one else on your friends list does:

I have the Power Rangers Movie Soundtrack. I REGRET NOTHING.

Name a book you own that no-one else on your friends list does:

The ones I've written but haven't published yet. Nyah nyah nyah!

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/etc that no-one else on your friends list does:

The Polar Bear King. Probably? It was a foreign film from the nineties, based on East of the Sun, West of the Moon, and dubbed into English- but even so, quite beautifully done.

Name a place that you have visited that no-one else on your friends list has:

Small fishing villages in Scotland. One was called Nairn and the other was called- I kid you not- Dyke.

RU AS SPESHUL AS I AM?

A Survey About Breathing--I Mean, Writing.

1. What genre do you write (poetry, novel, plays...)? Novels. Lots of novels.

2. What is a theme that you write a lot about? Revenge. >_>

3. Have you ever written about your own life? I've written stuff BASED off my own life. I'm really actually very boring, though, and the stuff based off my life has about as much in common with my life as Disney does with the fairytales they base their movies on.

4. What is the longest thing you have written?
Cloak and Dagger was 145,000 words before I culled about 20k of them while editing.

5. What would you say is your best work? I plead the fifth.

6. Have you ever gotten anything seriously published?
...Does indie count? No? *posts Okay Guy reaction face* :(

7. Do you ever want to get anything seriously published?
yes.

8. Do you want to be a writer when you grow up (that is, writing being your only source of income)?
What is this growing up you speak of? I've been waiting 23 years for that to happen. ;)

9. Do you let other people read your writing or are you very secretive about it?
There are no secrets on the internet.
.-.

10. Do you ever throw your writing away, or do you keep all of it?
KEEP ALL THE THINGS!

11. Who is your favorite character you have invented?
I dunno. They all kind of scare me LOL. I guess Catherine. You haven't met her yet. She's funny.

12. What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Reading, dreams, neural synapses.

13. Name one of your works:
FEARSCAPE.

14. Is your dream to get on the New York Times Bestseller's list?
If that happened I would buy a newspaper just to cut out that article and frame it. And then I would buy a projector, and turn the article into one of those laminate sheets, and I would shine it into the sky like the Batman logo EVERY NIGHT. >:D

15. Do you expect to get on the New York Times Bestseller's list?
Nooo.

16. How old were you when you wrote your first serious work?
I wrote a story about a girl with leaves for hair when I was like 4.

17. If you write poetry, is it rhymed or unrhymed?
Rhymey-whymey-whyme. Or not. It really does depend a lot.

18. Is imagery one of your strongest points in writing?
Sometimes.

19. What IS your strongest point in writing?
Coming up with titles.

20. What is your weakest point in writing?
Coming up with stories to go with the titles.

21. How many serious works have you written (ones you'd like to get published)?
About 20. Be afraid.

22. Do you turn your friends and family in to characters in your book?
I'll never tell! >:D

23. What is your system on character development?
What doesn't kill them makes them stronger (characters).

24. What writers can you compare yourself with?
You tell me, readers! You tell me!

25. Name another one of your works:
Equinox.

26. Do you prefer writing over reading?
When I'm doing one, I'd usually rather be doing the other. I'm like Milo, from the Phantom Tollbooth.

27. What was the inspiration for your greatest work?
Stories where the bad guys didn't stay bad. I was like, I WANNA WRITE ABOUT A MEAN SUMBITCH WHO STAYS MEAN.

28. Would you like to live like the characters in your stories?
LOL. Yes. Because being an assassin-slash-serial-killer is so me. No thanks! ^^

29. Would you hate one of your stories to be turned into a movie?
It depends on what they were planning to do it.

30. Have you ever written a story only to find out that there has all ready been one published exactly like it?
Sort of...but not really? I'm really competitive so I try not to look or read stories that sound too much like mine because I don't want to be biased. Usually my stories seem to be the more disturbing out of the two, and I get a weird sense of pride out of that. Like, YAY. I WIN. I'm very immature.

31. Go on, name another one of your works:
Err. Detraction.

32. What is it about?
DOOM AND DESPAIR.

33. Do you think you are a better writer than most of your contemporaries?
LOL. The minute you hear me spewing shit like that, you have my permission to shelve me as a BBA.

34. Are most of your stories about the same thing, or do they cover a lot of different themes?
No. I would get bored. Fast. I want to try writing in a whole bunch of different genres! I don't want to be a one-trick pony author.

35. Is writing a challenge for you, or does it come naturally?
First drafts come naturally. Editing goes slooooooowly. Frequently there is crying involved.

36. Have you ever taken a creative writing class?
Nope, never.

37. Have you ever written an entire novel?
Yes.

38. Have you ever sent your work in to a publisher, only to have it declined?
Yes. I was sad, but the lady was really nice. Hooray!

39. Name another one of your works:
Fearscape.

40. What is this story about?
A stalker...and a girl.

41. And finally, is writing the most important thing in your life?
Writing is probably my favorite thing besides reading. I've been doing it for fun since I was 5. There's something magical about making your own form of entertainment come to life. I love that. It's a little lonely and isolate sometimes, but that's why I'm so grateful for Goodreads. I get to meet new friends through reading- and writing. As a writer, you can't really ask for more than that. :')

50 Things You Probably Didn't Need to Know About Me, but Now Do (Ha!)

1. WHAT CURSE WORD DO YOU USE THE MOST?
I don't actually curse that much! At least, not in person. On the internet, more so, because it keeps things interesting.

2. DO YOU OWN AN IPOD?
Yes. It currently has zero songs on it. I got it for Xmas and have yet to devise The Perfect Playlist. I'm starting to worry that it will never have any songs on it, ever...

3. WHAT PERSON ON YOUR FLIST DO YOU TALK TO THE MOST?
:D

4. WHAT TIME IS Y0UR ALARM CLOCK SET TO?
What's an alarm clock? Oh, you must mean my morning punching bag! >:D

5. DO YOU STILL REMEMBER THE FIRST PERSON YOU KISSED?
Yes.

6. DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE ON 9/11/01?
God, I was in eighth grade. I was watching the news and was like WHAT IS GOING ON I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS THERE WAR

7. WOULD YOU RATHER TAKE THE PICTURE OR BE IN THE PICTURE?
It depends on how fugly I feel on that day, and who I'm with. Some people take shitty pictures, & of course those are the people who are like, "Why didn't you put my pic as your new profile pic?" I DUNNO. MAYBE BECAUSE YOU MADE ME LOOK LIKE A TWO-HEADED COW. >_>

8. WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.

9. DO ANY OF YOUR FRIENDS HAVE CHILDREN?
Quite a few of them do, actually! Sometimes they bring the kids when we hang out. They're pretty adorable.

10. HAS ANYONE EVER CALLED YOU LAZY?
Yes, and they were not entirely inaccurate.

11. DO YOU EVER TAKE MEDICATION TO HELP YOU FALL ASLEEP?
I've been known to use Benadryl when I'm having sleep allergies.

12. WHAT CD IS CURRENTLY IN YOUR CD PLAYER?
The last thing I listened to was The Cure's Disintegration album. Before that, it was a Florence + the Machine bend. GOTH GOTH GOTH YOUR BOAT.

How much I suck at this whole dating thing.

18. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO?
The day my paycheck comes!

19. DID YOU WATCH CARTOONS AS A CHILD?
I watched the shit out of cartoons. And I would have watched a whole lot more if my parents hadn't wised up and cut the cable. My brain probably looks like swiss cheese.

20. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF M&M'S?
Can't eat 'em. I'm allergic.

21. MORNING OR EVENING SHOWER?
Evening shower. Morning showers are too cold.

22. WHAT'S ONE THING YOU MUST ALWAYS HAVE ON YOU?
My wallet.

23. DO YOU OWN ANY BAND T-SHIRTS?
Not really. I had a Weezer t-shirt at one point but my sister stole it, & since I don't really like that band that much I never took it back.

24. WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING IN ONE HOUR?
Reading. Writing if I'm industrious. I'm not, though.

25. IS ANYONE IN LOVE WITH YOU?
I hope not. >_>

26. WHAT WAS THE LAST SONG YOU HEARD?
Come to Me, Deborah Holland.

27. LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
I don't remember, and that's a good thing.

28. ARE YOU ON A DESKTOP COMPUTER OR A LAP TOP?
Laptop. It's been falling apart since the day I got it. I can't wait until I can afford to get a new one.

29. ARE YOU CURRENTLY WANTING ANY PIERCINGS OR TATTOOS?
I have none, nor do I want any.

30. WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?
Too hot. I wish it would rain.

31. WOULD YOU EVER DATE A GIRL/GUY COVERED IN TATTOOS?
Honestly, probably not. Not because of the tattoos, but just because tattoos usually (but not always) suggest an attitude - rock music, parties, rebel-rebelliousness - that doesn't really coincide with what I want in life. But if I met the perfect guy and he had sleeves, I'd date him.

32. WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS?
Shower. Fangirled/fanangsted over Audrey, Wait! This is turning into quite the emotional snafu.

33. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SLEPT ON THE FLOOR?
2010. My air mattress leaked, and I couldn't get afford a new bed on my budget, so I slept on the floor and endured backaches until my parents took pity on me and my FUBAR excuse for a bed (i.e. sad pile of blankets on the floor arranged like a nest), and drove down to buy me a new mattress.

34. HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP DO YOU NEED TO FUNCTION?
Six. I can do three or four, but kind of feel like a zombie on the wrong side of the grave for the rest of the day.

35. DO YOU EAT BREAKFAST DAILY?
No.

36. ARE YOUR DAYS FAST-PACED?
If days were animals, mine would be a turtle.

37. WHAT DID YOU DO LAST NIGHT?

38. DO YOU USE SARCASM?
Sarcasm? What's that? Can you spread it on toast?

39. HOW OLD WILL YOU BE TURNING ON YOUR NEXT BIRTHDAY?
25. I'll officially be 1/4 of a century old. Ughhhh.

Yes. I hated the roller coasters and the rides, but I loved the animals. ♥

42. WHAT'S YOUR LATEST TELEVISION ADDICTION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH?
The Borgias.

43. DO YOU GET ALONG BETTER WITH THE SAME SEX OR THE OPPOSITE SEX?
Probably the same sex. All my attempts to befriend the opposite sex have let to sexual awkwardness. You can't have straight male friends without it turning into some sort of relationship thing. Or at least, I can't. :|

44. DO YOU LIKE MUSTARD?
Yesss.

45. DO YOU SLEEP ON YOUR SIDE?
The right side. The left is harder. I usually reserve that for when my right side feels sore or inflamed or whatever. Aren't these questions fascinating? Good thing I don't know what sarcasm is...

46. DO YOU WATCH THE NEWS?
Goodreads makes the news redundant. If something's important, one of my friends will post about it.

47. HOW DID YOU GET ONE OF YOUR SCARS?
I poked my kitty with a pencil. He decided to forgo the pencil in lieu of my hand.

48. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON TO MAKE YOU MAD?
Idiot drivers.

I like lots of people.

50. WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU PURCHASED?
A doughnut and a bubble tea.

Writing Survey :D

1. Are you a “pantser” or a “plotter?”
I go into a story with a vague idea of what I want to happen but--oh, okay, let's be honest. I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. Nope. Not a clue.

2. Detailed character sketches or “their character will be revealed to me as a I write”?
Getting too detailed can be a mistake. I think it can lead to Mary Sues and Marty Stus. Don't fall into the pitfall of vanity and obsess over your creations. Sometimes it's just better to approach a story as a blank slate.

3. Do you know your characters’ goals, motivations, and conflicts before you start writing or is that something else you discover only after you start writing?
Again, I kind of go in with a vague idea and develop it more as the story goes on.

4. Books on plotting – useful or harmful?
I always wonder about those. If the person who writes them is so good at plotting, why aren't they a best-seller? (*realizes the irony of saying this when she's also published a writing guide* >_>)

5. Are you a procrastinator or does the itch to write keep at you until you sit down and work?
Both. It's cyclical. I write pretty fast, though, so I think I'm entitled to the odd bout of procrastination. :D
*eyes readers, especially Alisa* *backs away slowly*

6. Do you write in short bursts of creative energy, or can you sit down and write for hours at a time?
One time I started writing around 11 A.M. and then around 6 P.M. I realized I hadn't eaten anything all day.

7. Are you a morning or afternoon writer?
Night. Always night. Although apparently this is not healthy so I'm going to try to go to bed earlier.

8. Do you write with music/the noise of children/in a cafe or other public setting, or do you need complete silence to concentrate?
Quiet, please.

9. Computer or longhand? (Or typewriter?)
JUST SUCK THE IDEAS STRAIGHT OUT OF MY VEINS.

10. Do you know the ending before you type Chapter One?
Hahahaha. I wish.

11. Does what’s selling in the market influence how and what you write?
I could say something really snarky here but I won't. No, I just write what I love. Or what I'm interested in or passionate about.

12. Editing – love it or hate it?
-__________-

Bonus questions

13. Why do you want to write?
Because it's painful not to.

14. Do you want to publish your work? Why?
I already self-publish, but I'd love to be able to do this professionally. I think I have a shot. It's a long-shot but hey, a shot's a shot. I'll take it!

15. Do like to write alone or do you like to work with other? Why?
I've never done a collab before. I think it would be very weird for me. Maybe someday, but not until I've refined my own style.

My Writing Process: A Blog Tour

The lovely Sam Mariano invited me to take part in this blog tour! Whee!

"So, what is The Writing Process Blog Tour? Each author who is invited to participate in the blog tour answers four questions about their writing process. The author then introduces three other authors. The idea is to help readers discover other authors that they may not have known about otherwise."

What am I working on?

I just finished Bound to Accept, which is slated to be released this Thursday. I'm currently working on its sequel, Bound to Be Satisfied (as well as Rebound, a fun little novella from the male MC's POV), and Crowned by Fire, book #3 in my Shadow Thane series.

How does my book differ from others in its genre?

I do my best to avoid stereotypes. Maybe not ALL stereotypes, but certainly the most prevalent and annoying ones. I try to minimize slut-shaming, include characters of a variety of ethnicities and sexualities, and basically write as true-to-life as possible. I don't always succeed, but I think I'm improving with every book I write thanks to feedback from my amazing reviewers.

Why do I write what I write?

My friends say it's my dark side screaming to get out.

How does my writing process work?

Lots of agonizing and frustration. I'm a perfectionist, and sometimes I won't be able to write for weeks--even months--because the self-hatred is so strong. "Why bother writing?" I ask myself. "You suck at writing, and you will always suck at writing, so go fuck yourself, you sucky suckton."

When I inevitably come crawling back to the keyboard (because I am a masochist, in addition to a perfectionist), I try to tell the story the best way I know how: getting it all out, even if it doesn't make sense. My first draft is like a very detailed outline. Then I rewrite each chapter 3-4 times individually before putting it all together and rewriting the whole story 3-4 times as a whole.

I can easily sit down and write for twelve hours straight if nobody interrupts me. Sometimes I forget to eat, drink, or sleep, and I've made myself sick from this in the past. Writing isn't so much a hobby for me as it is an all-consuming obsession. I don't think I could ever be happy if I wasn't writing something, anything. I need it like I need oxygen. If I could do this professionally, it would be a dream come true.

Authortastic Survey

Years writing: About 20. Actually publishing my stuff where people could read it? 10.

Least favorite character?: All of the characters in Tantalized. I wrote that book when I was very depressed. Rereading it brings back terrible memories.

Male or female characters?: Either!

Oldest character written?: Minerva Tyler, in Crowned by Fire, is about 90. She's such a bitch. Hahahahaha.

Longest you've written a character?: I'm not sure what this means? In terms of height, probably Adrian Callaghan, who's about 6'7". He could give the giants in a J.R. Ward novel a run for their money. >:D

Newest character?: Mika Ruiz, Carmen Vega, Joseph Mason, and Gaspard Lechance from my WIP, She Is My Song.

Which character of yours would be most likely to...
Jump off a bridge?: Catherine Pierce.
Get drunk and pass out?: Michael Boutilier.
Kill somebody in a very unorthodox way?: Gavin Mecozzi (or Adrian Callaghan)
Be far too hyper for their own good?: Kelly Hauser
Get lost and refuse to ask for directions?: Michael Boutilier
Get lung cancer?: Alexander Delacroix
Star in a horror movie?: Any of my characters could pull that off quite nicely...
Star in a video game?: Volera Magray
Make the world a better place?: Catherine Pierce
Have a torrid gay love affair?: Evelyn Fontaine *cough*

Relate each word to a book of yours:
Love - Locked and Loaded
Hate - Terrorscape
Money - Cloak and Dagger
Seduction - Bound to Attract
Lies - Tantalized
Tragedy - EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WRITTEN
Manipulation - EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WRITTEN
Violence - EVERYTHING I'VE EVER--Ok, I think you get it...
Politics - Cloak and Dagger
Fire - Black Beast
Ice - Horrorscape

Would you ever...
Write a prostitute?: Yes.
Write a musician?: Yes.
Write a pilot?: No. (I don't know shit about planes.)
Write a homosexual?: Yes.
Write a pedophile?: Yes.
Write a politician?: Yes.
Create a character for the sole purpose of smut?: Um...YES? >:D
Write a character who commits incest?: Already done that, have the t-shirt.

Got any more for me? I'm all ears. ;)

Inge Tagged Me in This Post Because She Sucks/20 Things You Might Not Know About Me

Although I love her anyway. ♥

So yeah, I woke up this morning and found out I had a homework assignment from Inge. I had to answer 20 questions about myself. UGH. SHE MADE ME DO WORK.

Here are the survey answers if you're curious: http://neniacampbell.blogspot.com/201...

Teaser:

Question 1: How tall are you?

5'9".

Question 2: Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?

I can type about somewhere around 100 words per minute. I can also play flute and piccolo.

Question 3: What’s your biggest blog-related pet peeve?

Sometimes I'll review a book that's really popular and some asshole will come on my review and start talking shit. I've moderated comments so these shit-talkers never see the light of day--partly because I feel that publishing their post would be sinking to their level, and allowing them to get bullied in turn.

Question 4: What’s your biggest non-blog related pet peeve?

People who smack their lips while they eat.

Question 5: What’s your favorite song?

It changes. Probably Drumming Song by Florence + the Machine
