#Audiobook ‘The Color of Evil’ by Armando Rodera

Hi all:

On Fridays I like to post about guest authors and new books. And as you know I’ve become quite interested in audiobooks too and try to bring you some regularly. A while back I read that a Spanish author I know, Armando Rodera, and whom I’ve featured in one of my Spanish posts as guest author, was having one of his most popular novels translated to EnglishThe Color of Evil(Trans. by Simon Bruni) and now is available in audiobook. I haven’t yet read any of Armando’s fiction but I read one of his books on writing and publishing and thought it was beautifully written (La LLave del xito) so I think this should be a treat.

The Color of Evil

Color of Evil by Armando Rodera (narrator: Peter Berkrot)

Color of Evil by Armando Rodera (narrator: Peter Berkrot)

byArmando Rodera(Author),Peter Berkrot(Narrator)

When the daughter of a prominent politician and her boyfriend disappear, officials suspect foul play. Seasoned inspector Francisco Bermejo and rookie brainiac Pablo Roncero team up to investigate, but their hope for an open-and-shut case quickly crumbles. They are on the trail of a serial killer – one whose motivations are as mysterious as the horrific, elaborate tableaus he leaves behind as clues. Bermejo and Roncero must overcome their differences, a byzantine bureaucracy, and the distraction of a beautiful journalist as they race across Spain in pursuit of the murderer. They can only guess where he will strike next – and with the gruesome game the killer’s playing, guesswork is not nearly good enough.

Just in case you prefer to read it, here is the Kindle version:

Here from his author page:

I was born in Madrid, Spain, on a hot summer’s day in 1972. From an early age I always had a love of reading, beginning with children’s collections like the Famous Five and The Happy Hollisters, before delving fearlessly into the adventures of Jules Verne, Alexandre Dumas and Emilio Salgari.

I graduated in IT and Telecoms Engineering in my home town and for nearly a decade I worked in the technology sector, until five years ago I decided to turn my career on its head, seeking a profession that would enable me to improve my quality of life and above all make time for my great passion: literature.

I have now published several novels in Spanish, my mother tongue: “El color de la maldad” (Color of Evil, the best-selling crime thriller in Spanish on Amazon.com in 2012 and 2013); “La rebelda del alma” (The rebellion of the Soul), a daring and original story of suspense, drama and romance with a dash of Noir (this book was global number one on Amazon.es and is now the top romantic suspense novel in Spanish on Amazon.com); “Juego de identidades” (Game of Identities), a fast-paced action-packed adventure thriller across two continents, which has been very well received by critics and readers. And finally, the novel “Caos absoluto” (Absolute Chaos), a dystopian crime thriller with an important social undertone. It is a book with which I aim to entertain, while also making readers reflect on our society and the corruption in politics and the economy.

My book “El enigma de los vencidos” (The Enigma of the Defeated), an adventure and mystery novel with a historical setting, was published digitally and in print by Ediciones B, one of Spain’s most prestigious publishers, and is also available in the USA through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.

I have also published my first non-fiction work, in digital format only. The book is entitled “La llave del xito. Consigue destacar en Amazon: Marketing para escritores” (The Key to Success. Stand out on Amazon: Marketing for writers), a book that can appeal to all readers, as well as independent writers.

In spring 2014, thanks to the international success of my crime thriller in Spanish, “El color de la maldad”, Thomas & Mercer will publish the English version of this book, to be entitled “Color of Evil”.

I am also a reader, content manager and freelance consultant on various projects, with a particular focus on Internet marketing and new technologies applied to publishing and culture. I am also a contributor to Getafe Negro, Madrid’s crime fiction festival.

And luckily, a group of very talented writers I belong to came to the rescue. They decided that as the weather is improving, it’s time to get ourBeach Reads ready, and to promote the idea, here is the video. I know there are giveaways and things coming up, so I’ll keep you posted.

And talking about beaches, when I got home, my next door neighbour had been keeping something for me all this time. A work of art by Ashley O’Neal. One of her series Drifting Bones.

#Newbook ‘Tales to Count On’ by S.R. Mallery. A master of the short story.

Hi all:

As you know, Fridays is a day I dedicate to guest authors or new books. It’s always a great pleasure for me to bring you new books by authors who’ve graced by blog before, and even more so when I’ve read and shared my opinion of their work before. This is the case with today’s offering.

I read and adored ‘Sewing Can Be Dangerous and Other Small Threads‘ by S. R. Mallery (here you can check my post) and when I saw the author had published another collection of short stories, I could not resist.

Tales to Count On by S.R. Mallery

Tales to Count On by S.R. Mallery

Tales to Count On

Curl up and enter the eclectic world of S. R. Mallery, where sad meets bizarre and deception meets humor; where history meets revenge and magic meets gothic. Whether it’s 500 words or 5,000, these TALES TO COUNT ON, which include a battered women’s shelter, childhood memories, Venetian love, magic photographs, PTDS fallout, sisters’ tricks, WWII spies, the French Revolution, evil vaudevillians, and celebrity woes, will remind you that in the end, nothing is ever what it seems.

ByGrady Harp

Format:Kindle Edition

Los Angeles author S. R. (Sarah) Mallery since her graduation from UCLA has enjoyed a varied career as a professional production artist, editor, ESL teacher, and tutor – but she also has been significantly involved as a classical/pop singer/composer working in clubs and churches while composing for educational filmstrips, having her own calligraphy company, a twenty-year quilting and craft artist and business, and now she devotes her time as an historical fiction writer, writing short stories in particular, as challenging a writing skill as any. She is a member of ASMWG (Authors’ Social Media Support Group) and has been published in both collections of her own works as well as anthologies with other writers published by Scars Publications, Chitra Publications, and House of White Birches. Her current publisher is Mockingbird Lane Press. Having read three of her books, now, likely classifies this reader as a Mallery addict.

Quite cleverly Sarah presents the reader with the Word Count conundrum – whether the length of a story is commensurate with the impact – and then proceeds to offer her wonderfully diverse tales in ascending order – shortest to longest. And to prove her point he first story GOOD ADVICE in a couple of pages relates an in control therapist in a women’s shelter, admired by all for the calm with which she handles her telephone please for help only face a abrupt situation of the terminal category at story’s end. In an equally brief tale – A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY – a visit to a zoo finds a tiger (Rudolfo) inadvertently picking up a discarded cigarette and out of rage having retribution by the discarding smoker. And another -THE KITCHEN – a nightmare of filth faces a maid whose employer has simply stepped out for a trip to the bank – or to her bed, a sanctum from her disengagement with the real world.

The stories grow linger but still corrupt reason in Sarah’s inimitable manner of imaginative tales: GIFTS – `In 1935, Peter was too young to know better. Dim lights, he figured–yes, it was the dim lights, the root of All Evil, that had done him in. Everyone else understood that maneuvering past the row of Stage Right columns, even well lit, wasn’t an easy task for anyone, much less a six-year-old claiming he couldn’t see. Just shy of Stage Left, he would often trip, catching himself on either his mother’s or his father’s arm. It was then that he finally wised up. He learned the inevitability of one of his parents sticking out their right toe to snag him as he went by–one night it might be his father’s, the next, his mother’s. They seemed to take turns. “If only I didn’t have to wear this eye patch,” he muttered from time to time, but his father’s, “Keep it on, Peter! Remember, that’s a big part of the act, kid!” haunted his every move. At first, he would turn to his mother–her theatrical makeup softening like a candle outside on a hot August day–the same mother who always stood helpless as her sweaty, rum-soaked husband returned home night after night, stumbling up their back steps and heading straight for their only child cowering in the farthest corner possible.’

That is the flavor of her alchemy with words. Or as the synopsis phrases it, `Whether it’s 500 words or 5,000, these TALES TO COUNT ON, which include a battered women’s shelter, childhood memories, Venetian love, magic photographs, PTSD fallout, sisters’ tricks, WWII spies, the French Revolution, evil vaudevillians, and celebrity woes, will remind you that in the end, nothing is ever what it seems.’ And not a one of these stories fails to satisfy.

But what the reader takes away from these compelling stories is that Mallery is a brilliant wordsmith – a unique artist who has mastered her medium! Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 15
