#Anticipodelibro Una vez psiquiatra 2. El caso de los cuerpos intercambiados. Sugerencias para la portada?

Hola a todos:

Si me seguís hace tiempo recordaréis que hace poco publiqué la precuela de mi serie thriller de suspense/psicológico Una vez psiquiatra…  y la compartí aquí en el blog (podéis conseguir todos los enlaces aquí). Y mencioné que estaba corrigiendo el borrador de la siguiente historia.

En eso sigo y ando a vueltas con la traducción, pero he empezado a pensar en la portada. Quiero (si es posible) encontrar algo que encaje con las otras dos portadas, aunque la novela es bastante diferente. Por si acaso, os las recuerdo:

No sé si os dará muchas pistas, pero os dejo el prólogo de la siguiente novela, por si os da alguna inspiración. De momento, se llama:

—Tenemos un caso muy peculiar entre manos. Pensé que te podría parecer interesante. Y nos vendría bien una ayudita —dijo Dave Dean.

—¿Qué tiene de tan peculiar este caso? —preguntó Mary Miller. —¿Qué te hace pensar que vayáis a necesitar un psiquiatra?

—Los del equipo lo han bautizado ‘el caso de los cuerpos intercambiados’, así que ya te puedes imaginar que es un pelín raro.

—Parece uno de los casos de Sherlock Holmes —dijo ella, intentando ocultar su diversión.

—Ojalá…

—Cuéntame más…

—Puedo hacer algo mejor. Te enviaré el archivo. Cifrado, por cuestión de seguridad, pero ya sabes qué hacer.

—OK. ¿Y qué hago con él?

—Léelo. Y envíame un mensaje o llámame cuando acabes —. Dave terminó la llamada sin decir adiós. Mary se quedó pensando un instante en su relación con ese hombre, unos años más joven que ella, pero entonces oyó el ping de un nuevo correo y le echó un vistazo al archivo. Y cualquier pensamiento sobre Dave Dean o sobre nada más le desapareció de la cabeza.

Bueno, ya sé que no es mucho, pero os prometo dedicarme a pensar en la descripción y la compartiré con vosotros en cuanto pueda.

As you know I published recently, and I shared here (check here for full links) the prequel to my psychological/suspense thriller series Escaping Psychiatry and I mentioned I was working on the draft of the next story in the series.

I’m still working at it (and translating it), but I’ve started thinking about covers, and I have no  ideas. I’m not sure sharing the prologue will help you much (the novel has a bit of a complicated story line… but I don’t want to give too much away yet) but just in case something jumps at you… here it goes…

Prologue

“We have a very peculiar case in our hands. I thought you might find it interesting. And we could do with some help,” Dave Dean said.

“What is so peculiar about the case?” Mary Miller asked. “What makes you think you need a psychiatrist?”

“The guys are calling it ‘the case of the swapped bodies’, so you can imagine it’s a bit odd.”

“It sounds like one of Sherlock Holmes’s cases,” she said, trying to hide her amusement.

“If only…”

“Tell me more…”

“I can do better.  I’ll send you a file. Encrypted, for security reasons, but you know what to do.”

“OK. And what should I do with it?”

“Just read it. And send me a message or call me when you’re done.” Dave ended the call without a word of goodbye. Mary wondered for a moment about her relationship with the man, a few years younger than her, but then heard the ping of a new e-mail and went to check the file. And all thoughts about Dave Dean or any other matter went clean out of her head.

I know it isn’t much to go on, but I promise to try and work on a description and bring you that. I want it to relate closely to the other two covers in the series, but I’m not sure how that will work out. Just in case you need a reminder:

El último prefecto de Franklin Díaz Lárez

El 31 de diciembre del año 2.001, quedaron suprimidas definitivamente las prefecturas de Venezuela. Unas instituciones reguladas por una ley inconstitucional, injusta e inmoral; la ley de vagos y maleantes. Un cuerpo normativo que facultaba a los prefectos a imponer arrestos y detenciones de hasta setenta y dos horas, o internamiento indefinido en aberrantes colonias de reclusión sin orden judicial previa.

Dicha ley había sido heredada de la última dictadura que hubo en Venezuela; la del General Marcos Pérez Jiménez, y a su vez había sido copiada, casi al calco, de otra similar que se aplicaba en España en la época de la dictadura franquista.

En ella se consideraba que todos los que no tuviesen oficio conocido podían ser considerados como vagos o maleantes, y ser objeto de sanción por parte de los prefectos. Incluso a los homosexuales se les atribuía tal consideración.

Inexplicablemente, aun y cuando los fundamentos jurídicos y éticos de aquella ley rayaban en lo absurdo, mantenía su vigencia plena, y los funcionarios encargados de su aplicación no estaban facultados para negarse a ejecutarla. Mientras mantuviera su vigencia, los prefectos estaban obligados a acatarla, cumplirla y hacerla cumplir.

Por ventura o por desgracia, el destino me eligió para ser uno de aquellos últimos prefectos.

AQUELLOS DULCES DÍAS DE CALOR

Francisco y Carmen, dos jóvenes empleados de una entidad bancaria, comienzan a estudiar juntos la carrera de derecho, aunque con ímpetus y motivaciones muy diferentes. A ella todo le da igual, pone muy poco de su parte. Él, por el contrario, se entrega con absoluta devoción.

Cercanos a la culminación del primer año académico, Carmen intentará conseguir sus objetivos formulándole a Francisco una insólita y sorprendente proposición. Su respuesta generará una cadena de situaciones inconcebibles e insólitas, y una intensa confusión de sentimientos entre ambos de los que no les será nada fácil escapar.

101 Kind Quotes. Daily Inspirations by Erika King

Here I copy from her post explaining how the book came to be (and yes, I’m mentioned as Erika asked me for a brief introduction to the book. And I’m in good company.)

101 KIND Quotes is a collection of quotes as I post them daily on my blog. I have been doing this for almost two years and you can imagine that quite a lot have come together. To pick only 101 was a bit of a challenge.

I started in mid-January and created almost all the 101 quotes anew. Because of copyright issues, I only used my own photos. New quotes were immediately included in this book. That means you will find quotes I have not posted yet. The past 2 weeks I spent with creating the cover, the acknowledgment, bio, introduction but most of all with putting the file together. That formatting process was a challenge but it made me almost a Word expert…LOL!

Why 101 quotes and not 100? In order to fill the last page

Now to some important details:

The idea:It was the end of November when Kritika of   From The Soul To The Nip Of The Pen  suggested publishing a calendar with quotes. I thought that is an awesome idea. But that would have meant creating 366 memes just asap because Christmas and the New Year were close. No, too late for that! But you know me… once the wheel is spinning in my head I don’t give up on it anymore and so I developed the idea of a quote book. I had time to create it and it did not have to have so many quotes.
The cover photoshows the modern skyline of Vienna (where I am from). The photo was taken by my youngest sister lately. When I thought about creating the cover I remembered it. My sister is an early bird. She took the photo in the morning close to where she lives.
The forward: I could not feel any more honored! Two of our published authors here on WordPress agreed to write a forward for me. They are Olga of AuthorTranslatorOlga and Sylvester of  Syl65’s Blog . You guys are incredible. Thank  you so very much!

#Audiolibros. @seebook_ nos trae una nueva forma de acceder a los audiolibros y de distribuirlos. ¿Interesados?

Hola a todos:

Los que me sigáis hace tiempo y conozcáis mi otro blog sabréis que hace tiempo que vengo hablando de audiolibros. ¿Por qué? Pues porque como lectora, sé que cada día tenemos menos tiempo para leer (aunque nos pasamos leyendo todo el tiempo, pero no libros, sino mensajes, tweets, posts en Facebook…) y más cosas que nos apetecería leer, ya sea para aprender algo (un lenguaje, historia, una materia que nunca tuvimos tiempo de explorar), para mejorar nuestras vidas (meditación, filosofía, lecturas que nos inspiran), o para distraernos un rato.

Pero, por más que nos empeñemos en hacer varias cosas a la vez, no siempre podemos leer y hacer otras cosas (y eso lo digo yo, que a menudo me voy a pasear con el libro o el lector en la mano, eso sí, buscando sitios con poco tráfico y no muchas farolas). No podemos conducir y leer (no, de verdad que no, y olvidaos de los móviles), ni hacer las tareas de la casa, o ir a correr y hacer ejercicio y leer al mismo tiempo. Pero, sí que podemos hacer todas esas cosas y escuchar algo. Y los audiolibros son una gran alternativa.

Antes, tenías que llevar un cassette o un lector de CDs (sí, los buenos tiempos?), pero hoy en día hay otras opciones.

Recordaréis que os he hablado de Seebook en varias ocasiones. Ellos también opinan que los audiolibros tienen mucho futuro y han apostado fuerte, usando tecnología punta para que los audiobooks puedan ser descargados directamente de la red con poco consumo de datos, al móvil, tablet u ordenador inmediatamente, con solo scanear el QR. En el grupo de librerías donde distribuyen sus Seebooks (más de 200 en toda España) están muy interesados en esta opción, y naturalmente, una de las cosas más complicadas en el mundo de los audiolibros es encontrar la forma de distribuirlos.

What a fun book this was! Starting with a colorful, tantalizing cover, Ms. Núñez Miret’s story immediately drew me in. In it, Dulce and Adelfa are best friends and, coincidentally, half sisters (It’s complicated!). Dulce has dabbled in one profession after another; Adelfa has had trouble with men. Together they finally get their acts together by starting a cupcake and cake business, proving the age-old adage, “when things are meant to be” they just happen lickety-split.

Using an old, 1878 abandoned firehouse, they develop a community-based, fun-filled bakery, where books are offered to the public as well as good cheer. All is going swimmingly when they are invited to participate in a televised Hollywood bake off. The reader is then treated to the inner workings of shows such as this––some of it wonderful, some of it not so good. As the contestants get to know one another, romance blossoms for our heroines, bringing happiness full circle for all. If you want to read a highly entertaining, feel-good book, I definitely recommend this one!

Como ya sabéis, los viernes toca novedad literaria. Hoy os traigo una novela que he descubierto hace poco. Es larga para lo que se lleva hoy en día y está gustando mucho.

Primero algo sobre el autor.

Pablo Palazuelo

Pablo Palazuelo Basaldua nace en Madrid, en el año 1965. Estudia Ciencias Empresariales y habla varios idiomas. Actualmente está casado y tiene tres hijos.

Entre sus aficiones se encuentra la fotografía, la cual nace cuando sirve como voluntario en una Unidad de Operaciones Especiales del Ejército. Gracias a ella, logra realizar una fotografía que primero es publicada en una revista y posteriormente, aprovechando que guarda cierta relación con el argumento, le sirve como fondo de la portada de su primera novela, Nunca es tarde para morir, historia con la que comienza su aventura como escritor y novelista.

Su inicio en el gélido Ártico sirve de vaga orientación a los lectores del asunto que se nos va a presentar. Es evidente que si en 1987 vemos a un hombre al borde de la congelación que corre sobre un mar helado en busca de un punto de geolocalización exacto y a continuación asistimos a la aparición de bajo el hielo de un submarino que viene a recogerlo, algo en nuestro interior nos empuja a situarnos mentalmente en una historia de espionaje militar (CIA, KGB, CESID, MOSSAD, …) propio de la guerra fría; más concretamente, por la fecha, del final de la guerra fría. Antes del capítulo del Ártico hay una secuencia misteriosamente titulada “Muchos años antes” en la que una pareja corre huyendo de algo terrible que se les viene encima desde el cielo. Del final de esta escapada nada se nos dice, sólo sacamos en claro que el hombre se llama Iván, pero intuimos que la muerte -de él, de ella, de ambos- habrá sucedido. Mucho más adelante sabremos qué era aquello.

Ya sólo con estos dos mimbres el escritor logra atrapar al lector y crearle el deseo de leer y leer para ver si sus intuiciones se confirman o no. En esto -suspense, misterio, incertidumbre, etc- consiste en gran medida el género al que este relato se adscribe: el thriller detectivesco con los ingredientes propios de la novela negra.

Cuando me acerqué por vez primera a esta novela de Pablo Palazuelo llamó vivamente mi atención el subtítulo con que se publicitaba: ‘La mejor novela negra de los últimos tiempos’. Como frase promocional no estaba mal; lo que nunca pensé es que con las debidas salvedades dicho eslogan pudiera aproximarse bastante a la verdad.

Pablo Palazuelo escribe una auténtica novela negra, en línea con la clásica novela de serie B de raíz norteamericana que iniciara en nuestra contemporaneidad el gran Dashiell Hammet con “El halcón maltés”, y llevó a su más alta cima Raymond Chandler. A ambos autores admiro [leer reseñas de novelas suyas aquí y aquí]; por eso encontrar entre mis paisanos a alguien que usa sus procedimientos con agilidad y oficio me ha encantado. ¡Bravo, Pablo!

Me ha encantado el libro de principio a fin. El lenguaje muy cuidado algo que me ha parecido bastante extraño ya que hay muchas novelas policiacas donde es algo que se cuida poco. En algunos momento la acción ha conseguido sobrepasarme y he tenido que suspender la lectura para continuar después con mucho más interés. No es una novela al uso. Con gran conocimiento de los temas que toca y amplísima documentación. Lo recomiendo sin dudar.

#Ideasparalibros de no-ficción. ¿En qué sois expertos?

Hola a todos:

Estos días estoy algo ocupada con traducciones (las mías y las de otros autores. No os olvidéis de mi promoción), pero aparte de eso mi cerebro sigue dándole vueltas a la escritura. Estoy corrigiendo  y traduciendo la siguiente novela en mi serie Una vez psiquiatra… (que si no cambio de opinión, se llamará ‘El caso de los cuerpos intercambiados‘), tengo ideas para un par más en la misma serie, una posible novela romántica, quizás más novelas sobre algunos de mis personajes anteriores…

Pero también llevo tiempo pensando en tópicos para un libro de no-ficción. Hay muchos libros escritos ya sobre áreas en las que he trabajado o estudiado, hay una gran cantidad de libros sobre autopublicarse y escribir libros, y lo cierto es que aparte de decirle a la gente que no haga lo que yo, no se me ocurre nada que pueda añadir a lo ya dicho, así que he estado pensando en otras posibilidades.

Hace años que vivo sola y siempre hay gente (por lo general otras mujeres) que me comentan que ellas no se atreverían a vivir solas, o no irían al cine, al teatro, o a comer solas. Encontré algunos libros sobre el tema y lectoras que se quejaban de que la mayoría de ellos trataban sobre mujeres que se habían quedado solas después de haber perdido sus parejas (por divorcio, separación o fallecimiento) y sus esfuerzos por encontrar otra persona con quien compartir su vida, en lugar de ser libros sobre personas que eligen vivir solas y sus experiencias.

De momento solo he tomado algunas notas y tengo algunas ideas. No sé si llegaré a escribir sobre ello o no pero sentía curiosidad por saber más sobre las experiencias de otros autores que hayan escrito libros de no-ficción, sobre cómo se diferencia el proceso de escribir no ficción, sobre cómo os ha ido, y si tenéis algún consejo.

Y a los lectores, ¿leéis libros de no-ficción? ¿Sobre qué temas os gusta leer? ¿Hay algo que echéis de menos o que os parezca que nunca podéis encontrar libros sobre ese tema? ¿Habéis notado si los libros que más os gustan de no-ficción tienen algo en común?

También quería preguntaros si os interesaría una serie de posts sobre algunos de los temas de los que había pensado hablar en el libro.

Hi all:

Although I’m busy at the moment with translations (mine and other authors’ as well. By the way, don’t forget my promotion), my brain has been focusing on writing too. I think I already mentioned that I’d finished the draft of the next story in the thriller series ‘Escaping Psychiatry’ (and if I don’t change my mind it’s going to be called ‘The Case of the Swapped Bodies’) and now I’m correcting it and translating it. I have ideas for several stories on the series, fairly detailed for the next one. I also have a romance that every so often pops up asking to be written but it hasn’t managed to get me writing yet. My mother keeps trying to convince me to write sequels of some of my stories (and I have some half-baked ideas for possible ones). We’ll see if she manages.

For some time now, I’ve been wondering about non-fiction. I’ve read quite a number of posts on writing about what you know that might be of interest to others, and more recently, one of the Webinars I attended asked about the unique area of expertise that one has that others need to know about or would find interesting and useful. And that got me thinking. I had an interesting conversation with Teagan Geneviene where we talked about expertise, careers, jobs, and noted that some of the skills one acquires might not be stuff easy to teach (I can’t teach anybody to become a doctor or a psychiatrist by writing a book, there are great books on literature and criminology and I don’t have a particular expertise born out of years of teaching or working on either subject, and with regards to writing or publishing books, other than suggest you don’t do things the way I have, I don’t have great wisdom to share).

I had a thought. I live alone and have done so for many years (sometimes I’ve shared accommodation in hospitals or colleges but that’s not the same as living with somebody) and have had people (women mostly) tell me they wouldn’t dare to live alone, or they wouldn’t do many other things by themselves, like go travelling, go to the cinema or to the theatre alone, go to a restaurant… Although I don’t think I have much of an expertise on the subject, at least I have some experience and came up with quite a few topics I could write about related to it. I checked, looking for books about it, and found some readers complaining that most of these books (not that many) seemed to focus on women who had to live alone after their relationship ended and much of their books was about how they tried to find a partner, rather than showing living alone as a voluntary choice and a happy one.

I’ve written a few notes and have some ideas on what I could write about, but wondered if you had any thoughts. Not only about that topic, but also: what’s the non-fiction book you’d like to read? Or what topic you could (or are planning to) write about?

If you’re avid readers of non-fiction: what characteristics do the books you’ve enjoyed most share? Where do you discover these books?

And if you’ve written some non-fiction books, did you find it a totally different experience? Any thoughts or tips (both on writing it and on what you did next)?

Oh, and another question: Would you be interested in reading some posts where I explore some of the topics I’m thinking about covering in the book?
