I’ve decided to dedicate a few posts to recent books that you might have missed. It’s good to start the New Year and spring with something brand new to read.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Big Beaver, home of the Phantom Bigfoot Bather and his many crazy teenage friends. Phantom Bigfoot Strikes Again is a ludicrously different take on Bigfoot and his habits. It quickly dispels the Hollywood b-movie version of a cannibalistic female-ravaging monster. Big Beaver’s tribe of Bigfoot is so peace-loving they sadly make easy targets for hunters.

This is where Duane-o the no-brain-o comes in. At the age of 18, Sam, his father reveals the truth of their hermit-like existence in the woods of the Shasta Cascade surrounding Big Beaver. Sam hands over the task of The Guardian to his son, also genetically altered by The Elders, tall Swedish-looking aliens from the planet Abba.

And now for one whole year, Duane has lived the life he was always meant to live – free of normal drag-me-downs that every other teenager has to endure. He has the ability to see and hear what his close friends are doing, no matter how far away they may be. He can heal with the touch of his hands, and uses this ability many times to save injured animals and the reason for his existence – Bigfoot.

But most of all, Duane loves being a WereBigfoot, to run free in the dark forest at night, play with the animals and have such fun – until that dumbass Beau Bruger, a teenage friend of his, goes missing.

Things get real tricky for our superhero, Duane-o, when Beau, the plumber’s 17 year old son goes missing, apparently abducted by Bigfoot. As if! Beau is always saying he’s been taken by Bigfoot, so no one believes he’s missing, not even his parents. 2 days pass and Duane smells a rat and she is Zola, a naughty 16 year old Bigfoot desperate for a mate. This means his closest friend, MB, local crypto-zoologist and general busybody will be sniffing around with his big nose looking for that elusive evidence – Bigfoot!

To make matters worse, Duane must also reunite two star-crossed lovers – the gorgeous Sheriff Louise Harper and the anal FBI Agent Virgil Tuckerwood. This he has to do on orders of The Elders. But on his arrival in Big Beaver, Agent Tuckerwood is all regulation and spurns Lou’s advances. Lou thinks Virgil is having a fling with his partner, the sexy Agent Merlot as she overhears them getting it on. Poor Duane is at a loss how to get them hitched, but he must succeed or The Elders might take this as a weakness on his part.

Now Duane-o has to keep the FBI and Sheriff Lou from discovering his epic secret. So he must find Beau first and keep him from revealing the truth of Bigfoot. But what Duane does discover deep in the forest is so mind-bogglingly stupid, even he can’t fix the problem.

So Duane must rely on dumb luck and the wisdom of The Elders to keep his secret a secret or he will be stripped of his superpowers and remain in Big Beaver a normal human being like every other Beaverite. Not that there are any normal Beaverites.

Excerpt:

Not long after that it was Duane’s eighteenth birthday, and he had the shock of his life, just after his mother had left. He woke up from a night of weird visions chasing ape-like creatures in the forest. As usual he had to use the toilet. He burst into the bathroom and came to a stop. Before him, stood a Bigfoot as naked as a jaybird, but not naked. The creature was covered head to toe in long blond hair and was at least seven feet tall.

As he stared at the Bigfoot he recognized his father’s facial features.

“Dad … is that you?”

“Hello Duane … I guess it’s time I explained some things.” He laid a hand on Duane’s trembling shoulder. “I’ve been The Guardian of the forest for too long now and it’s time to join my new family.” He smiled big yellow teeth.

“What’s happened to you, Dad?” Duane thought of the film Teenwolf.  “Are you a werewolf?”

Sam laughed. “No Duane … I’m a WereBigfoot … not a true Bigfoot and not exactly human. I was chosen by The Elders, as many before have, to help our tribe stay a secret and to stop their gene pool from drying up.”

“Chosen?”

“Yes, son, chosen by the lights up at The Big X. They took me to the place I can never remember, but that’s not important … what is … is you, my son … you must continue to protect the forest and its secret.”

“What secret, Dad?”

“The Bigfoot! They must never be discovered … don’t ask me why … The Elders have never thought fit to tell me … but it’s real important … but I gotta go now, Duane.” Sam shuddered and trembled. “The forest is calling me.”

Duane heard strange animal sounds echoing through the woods. “Woooo … wooooo … woooooo.”

“Am I going to change too, Dad?”

“Yes son, you are The Guardian now. The lights will tell you what to do … and your sixth sense will come in handy.”

“Sixth sense … like in the movie?”

“Not exactly, Duane …do you remember the lights?”

“You mean that time I was spying on Virgil and Lou at Little Beaver and I saw the lights? Not long after that Virgil left,” he added as an afterthought.

“You got it in one, Duane. They chose you way back then. In the pantry is some weird-tasting stuff … fermented Jooobaaa … drink it all … but not at once … it helps prepare the way. If you like you can water it down with some OJ and limejuice, makes a great cocktail. It won’t diminish its unique qualities.”

“Eh, okay Dad. Will I see you again?”

“Yeah … I’ll be dropping by now and again to see how you’re doing.” Sam kissed Duane’s cheek and dashed from the log cabin howling like a howler monkey.

Tres películas y el dinero. Vampiros, SIDA y Lobos.

Hola a todos:

Estos días dejo que los pensamientos  y conexiones que me vienen a la mente y no se quieren ir dicten el contenido de mis posts. En las dos últimas semanas he visto tres películas, que aunque muy diferentes, no pude dejar de notar tienen algo en común: los personajes principales van por el mundo con enormes fajos de dinero. Lo que intentan conseguir con el dinero es muy distinto.

Only Lovers Left Alive

En el film de Jim Jarmusch Only Lovers Left Alive (al final pongo un breve sumario e información sobre las películas, obtenidos de www.imdb.com y como comento allí no sé qué nombre le darán cuando la estrenen en países de habla Hispana), Adán y Eva (la película se basa libremente en un libro de Mark Twain, Los diarios de Adán y Eva. Si queréis leer una versión electrónica gratuita, aquí os dejo un enlace, aunque seguro que hay otras: http://www.amazon.es/dp/B006EA7RQ0/) son dos vampiros que llevan vivos (o muertos, ya me entendéis) muchos siglos y siguen enamorados al cabo de todo este tiempo. Tienen una educación exquisita (me encanta la escena en que Eva está haciendo el equipaje para visitar a Adán, ya que ella vive en Tánger y él está en Detroit, y llena dos maletas de libros [una mujer/vampira con la que tengo mucho en común] después de leer a gran velocidad un montón de clásicos en varias lenguas, incluyendo Campoamor), viven vidas aisladas, y se alimentan comprando sangre a doctores bien conectados y bancos de sangre. A pesar de sus vidas tan peculiares, su existencia es como un diamante pulido, brillante y resplandeciente comparado con los seres humanos que les rodean, ya que aprecian las cosas bellas de la vida, la música, la literatura, el amor. Adam no llama ‘zombies’ a los seres humanos sin motivos. Él es músico y parece un romántico a la deriva en el mundo moderno, con ideas suicidas incluidas. Eva le recuerda que había pasado por experiencias similares cuando se asociaba con Lord Byron y su círculo. La película es increíblemente bella. Incluso un dilapidado Detroit aparece triste pero ofrece un marco adecuado.

John Hurt, que hace el papel de Christopher Marlowe, el famoso escritor inglés, lanzándole dardos a un retrato de Shakespeare (su contemporáneo), es maravilloso, como siempre. Desgraciadamente se queda sin reservas de “la sangre buena” y acaba muerto por consumir sangre contaminada.

Dallas Buyers Club

El club de los desahuciados/Dallas Buyers Club, basada en una historia real, donde el personaje central, Ron Woodroof, interpretado por Matthew McConaughey que se merece su Oscar, es un electricista de Dallas, que no es ni bien educado ni sofisticado. Parece que solo le interesan las drogas (principalmente cocaína) y las mujeres (seguiremos con estos temas más tarde) y como descubrimos cuando debido a un accidente de trabajo le diagnostican el SIDA, también odia a los gays. Cuando le diagnosticaron la enfermedad se conocía poco sobre los métodos de transmisión y la mayoría de la gente creía que si no era a través de transfusiones, el uso intravenoso de drogas o relaciones homosexuales eran las causas más probables. Después de un breve período en que se niega a aceptar el diagnóstico, descubre que el sexo heterosexual sin protección, que es uno de sus placeres habituales, también puede transmitirla. Le dan 30 días de vida. Su personaje no es nada agradable. Es machista, no le gustan los gays, y parece vivir solo para gozar el momento.  Pero no abandona nunca. Está decidido a vivir tanto tiempo como pueda, y se enfrentará a quienes se interpongan en su camino, sea la FDA (Federal Drugs Admininistration, la agencia que aprueba los fármacos en los Estados Unidos), el hospital, los médicos o el gobierno. No es totalmente altruista (cuando empieza a “importar” drogas de México y después de dondequiera que las pueda conseguir, le cobra a los enfermos y uno tiene la impresión de que gana dinero con la transacción), pero no es un desalmado y se esfuerza por compartir la información que consigue, hasta el punto de enviarle medicamentos a un policía amigo suyo, para su padre que tiene demencia. Y después de que lo diagnostican se abstiene sexualmente hasta que ve a una chica que viene a por tratamiento (¡y anda que no es feliz ni nada!). También llega a aceptar la homosexualidad y defiende a su amigo  y asociado transexual, Rayon, una interpretación muy emotiva de Jared Leto (que también se merece el Oscar). Durante la película, vemos como Ron cambia y su experiencia le transforma.

Hay escenas cortas que nos permiten vislumbrar a la persona real que se esconde detrás de su fachada (como cuando va a cenar con su doctora y amiga, y hablan sobre su madre, que era pintora y le abandonó cuando era muy joven) y a mí me gustó especialmente la escena donde Rayon, vestido con traje de hombre, va a visitar a su padre, banquero, que en un momento de la conversación exclama ‘Ayúdame Dios’ y Rayon dice: ‘Ya lo ha hecho. Tengo el SIDA.’

La película no presume de florituras estilísticas. Está filmada como un documental, y la forma está al servicio de la historia. Las interpretaciones de los dos actores principales son extraordinarias.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Ya había comentado que al principio de la película a Ron solo le interesan las mujeres y las drogas. Comparte estos intereses con Jordan Belfort, el protagonista de otra historia basada en hechos reales El lobo de Wall Street de Martin Scorsese. Su otro interés es ganar dinero. La película tiene ritmo rápido (aunque es larga), bellamente filmada, las interpretaciones son fantásticas, a ratos es muy divertida (cuando Jordan y su amigo y asociado acaban paralíticos debido a una sobredosis la película se convierte en puro slapstick) pero es aterradora. Cuando hace unas semanas escribí sobre American Hustle (La gran estafa americana) discutí su posible falta de moralidad, pero aquí no hay duda alguna; esta película es una celebración de las estafas, corrupción y fraude a gran escala. El dinero lo justifica todo, la avaricia y el egoísmo no tienen límites, y cuando finalmente llega el castigo, es muy poco y demasiado tarde. Matthew McConaughey tiene un papel corto pero simbólico (que me recordó al de Alec Baldwin en la versión fílmica de la obra de Mamet Glengarry Glen Ross) ofreciéndole a Jordan su propia versión de la ética (o falta de ella) de la profesión de agente de bolsa.

¿Las recomiendo? Todas son buenas películas, aunque muy diferentes. El club de los desahuciados/Dallas Buyers Club es una película bien hecha con grandes actuaciones, y una historia sobre la voluntad y el empeño humano, que no conoce fronteras. El lobo de Wall Street es como la historia del Rey Midas para nuestra época, pero sin castigo final. Si odiáis a los banqueros y agentes de bolsa y os sentís ofendidos por al crisis económica en la que vivimos no os la recomiendo ya que conseguirá que os hierva la sangre. Creo que Only Lovers Left Alive se convertirá en una película de culto, y yo he decido comprarla en cuanto pueda y verla varias veces. Es una de esas películas (come Blade Runner e incluso Wall-E) donde los no-humanos entienden y aprecian mucho más la belleza y la grandeza de la vida que lo hacen los humanos. Quizás tendríamos que hacerles caso.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) (No sé cómo se llamará la película en español. No he encontrado información. La traducción sería algo así como Los únicos amantes que quedan vivos o Los únicos amantes que sobreviven. ¿Los único amantes vivos?)

Una historia que se centra en dos vampiros que siguen enamorados después de varios siglos.

Three movies and money. Vampires, AIDS and Wolves.

Hi all:

These days I let the content of my posts be dictated by those thoughts or connections that keep popping up in my mind and refuse to go. In the last couple of weeks I’ve watched three movies, and although they are very different, I couldn’t help but notice that they have something in common: the main characters wave wads of money around. What they are trying to achieve couldn’t be further apart.

Only Lovers Left Alive

In Jim Jarmusch’s film Only Lovers Left Alive  (I give a brief summary and more details of the movies at the end obtained from www.imdb.com ), Adam and Eve (the film is loosely based in a book by Mark Twain , The Diaries of Adam and Eve. If you want a free e-version go here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0195101529/ although others are available) are two vampires who’ve lived (or been undead) for centuries and have been in love it seems for as long. They are exquisitely well educated (I love the scene where Eve is packing to go and visit Adam, as she lives in Tangiers and he is in Detroit, and she packs two suitcases full of books [a woman/vampire after my own heart] after speedreading classics in many languages), live pretty isolated lives, and feed themselves by buying blood from well-connected doctors and blood-banks.  Despite their peculiar lives, their existence is like a shining diamond compared to that of the human being around them because they appreciate the beautiful things around him, literature, music and love. Adam doesn’t call humans ‘zombies’ for nothing. He is a musician and seems a romantic lost in the modern world, with suicidal ideation and all. Eve reminds him that he has lived through similar experiences when he was associating with Lord Byron and his circle. The film is astonishingly beautiful. Even a dilapidated Detroit looks sad but fitting.

John Hurt, who plays Christopher Marlowe, throwing darts with a painting of Shakespeare as target, is wonderful, as always. Unfortunately, he runs out of supply of “the good stuff” and ends up dying because of contaminated blood.

Enter:

Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club, based on a true story, where the main character, Ron Woodroof, played in a well-deserved Oscar winning performance by Matthew McConaughey, is a Dallas electrician who is neither educated not sophisticated. He seems to be only interested in drugs (cocaine mostly) and women (more about that later) and as we discover when he is diagnosed with AIDS due to an accident at work, he’s homophobic too. At the time of his diagnosis the illness was very poorly understood and most people thought transfusions, IV drug use or homosexual relations were the likely culprits. After a brief period of denial he discovers that unprotected sex, that he has plenty of, can also be a mode of transmission. They give him 30 days to live. His character is not likeable. He’s sexist, homophobic, and seems to live only for the moment. But he won’t quit. He’s determined to live for as long as he can, and he will confront whoever gets in his way, be the FDA, hospital, doctors, the government. He is not completely altruistic (when he starts bringing drugs from Mexico and later on from wherever he can get them, he charges people and you have the sense that he is making money out of it), but he is not heartless and he goes out of his way to share the information he finds, including sending medication to a policeman friend, for his father who suffers dementia. And he seems to abstain sexually until he finds a girl who comes to the clinic seeking treatment (and boy, is he happy about that!). He also gets to accept homosexuality and defends his transgender friend and associate Rayon, a deeply touching Jared Leto (who again deserves the oscar). Throughout the movie we see Ron change and be transformed by his experience

There are brief scenes where you get to sense the real person behind the bravado (like when Ron goes for dinner with his female doctor and friend, and they talk about his mother, who was a painter but abandoned him when he was very young) and I particularly liked the scene when Rayon, dressed in a man’s suit, goes to visit his father, a banker, who at some point says ‘God help me’ and Rayon says: ‘He is. I got AIDS.’

The film is not one for great stylistics. It does have the look of a documentary, and the form is at the service of telling the story. The performances of the two main male actors are outstanding.

The Wolf of Wall Street

I mentioned how Ron is mostly interested in drugs and women. He shares these interests with Jordan Belfort, the protagonist of another story based on real events Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. His other interest being making money. The film is fast paced (although it’s quite long), beautifully filmed, has fantastic performances, it is really funny at times (when both Jordan and his best friend and associate end up legless due to a drug overdose the movie becomes pure slapstick) but it is horrifying. When I talked about American Hustle a few weeks ago I discussed the possible amorality of the film, here there is no doubt; this is a celebration of trickstery, corruption and fraud in the grand scale. Money is justified by itself, there are no limits to greed and selfishness, and when punishment finally arrives, it is too little, too late. And judging by the seminars the character is offering at the end, he has learned nothing in the process. Matthew McConaughey plays a small but powerful part (reminiscent of Alec Baldwin’s bit-part in the film version of Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross) giving Jordan his own version of the ethics (or lack of) of being a stockbroker.

Would I recommend them? They are all good films, although very different. Dallas Buyers Club is a solid movie with great performances, and a history of the human spirit and human resilience. The Wolf of Wall Street is like King Midas’s story in modern times, but with no punishment. If you hate bankers and financiers and feel aggrieved by the current economic situation I don’t recommend it as it will make your blood boil. I think that Only Lovers Left Alive will become a cult-film, and I’m intending to buy it and watch it more than once. It is one of those movies (like Blade Runner or even Wall-E) where the non-humans have more appreciation and understanding of the beauty and greatness of life than humans do. Maybe we should take heed.

Los viernes os suelo traer autores invitados, clásicos o contemporáneos. Me pareció apropiado dedicar algunos posts a las novedades que mis compañeros escritores han publicado recientemente, ya que no es fácil estar al día y me he dado cuenta que en el tiempo que llevo con mi blog muchos de los escritores que lo han visitado han publicado nuevas obras, y nuevos escritores han presentado trabajos que merecen nuestra atención.

Hoy os traigo dos novelas de la escritora Mónica Manzanares. Una es una aventura espacial, y la otra de género fantástico/ mágico, y si os gusta ejercitar la imaginación y vivir aventuras extraordinarias, os recomiendo que les echéis un vistazo.

“This is the first time I’m in your house and I just met your parents… maybe the second time,” he jokes and then nibbles on my bottom lip.

“Grrrrr,” I grumble in his mouth. “You are always being too good.” His eyes narrow at me and he let’s out a rough chuckle.

“Katherine, I think you know that’s not true and I’ll show you just how bad I am when we are back up at school.” His hands snake up to my shoulders wrapping around the back of my neck. Pulling me towards him and his lips find mine again. Softly he kisses me across my jaw to my ear. “Patience,” he whispers.

“I don’t want to be patient,” I pout as I push my body into him. He laughs into me and un-straddles me from his lap. We face each other and I smile shyly at him feeling a little funny by my boldness.

“Stop,” he says, and his hand latches onto my pinky finger gently rubbing it. “Don’t be embarrassed. I don’t like you having to be patient either,” he says, just before he plants a firm kiss to my forehead. I lean myself against him and rest my head on his chest. His arms wrap around me tightly making my insecurities fade. As I take in his familiar pine and masculine scent he shifts us back against the arm of the couch allowing me to snuggle myself even closer.

Melissa Rolka grew up in the Chicagoland area all of her childhood and has always had a love of writing. She started by keeping a journal at a young age and then in high school she started writing poetry. A couple poems were published anonymously. Then in college she majored in Philosophy, which required lots and lots of writing. After graduating from Marquette University she traveled west to Los Angeles. There she worked for the Writers Guild of America and found herself submerged in the writers world. She worked on small writings, but never pursued them. On the side she became involved with a small theater group. Eventually she made her way back to the Midwest, where her heart belongs, and worked in business for several years. She found love, got married and has two beautiful children. Being at home has allowed her to keep following her love of reading and writing.The Perfect Distraction is her first full length novel. The second one is ‘The Perfect Emotion’ and she hopes for a third. When Melissa is not writing she is caring for, playing with and loving her two kids. In between taking care of her family and writing she almost always has her nose buried in her Kindle.

Wattpad. Venid a visitarlo!

Hola a todos:

Me andaba preguntando sobre qué iba a escribir y tenía varias ideas, pero considerando que este blog es (principalmente) un blog sobre escritura, libros, escritores (con otras cosas mezcladas, como reseñas de películas, comentarios sobre historia familiar, mantenerse en forma, mindfulness…), me pareció que una invitación a visitor Wattpad no estaría de más. Sospecho que la mayoría de vosotros ya la conocéis. Según Wikipedia:

‘Wattpad es un comunidad en línea en torno a temas de escritura y la narración.’ La comunidad reúne a lectores y escritores y es gratis para ambos. El cuartel general de Wattpad está en Toronto, y nación en el 2006 de la colaboración entre Allen Lau e Ivan Yuen. Desde entonces han conseguido financiación, han incluido clásicos del proyecto Gutenberg, se les ha acusado de ignorar la piratería, han introducido premios…

Según Wikipedia, 5 de cada 10 usuarios están en los Estados Unidos aunque su uso está muy extendido.

Yo la descubrí gracias a mi colega el escritor Frank Spoiler, a quien le gusta mucho Wattpad (así que evidentemente la usan en España también) y me intrigó.

¿Cómo la usan los escritores?

Eso depende de la persona.  Por lo que he visto cuando la he visitado, algunos autores publican exclusivamente en Wattpad, al menos de momento. Hay autores que publican fragmentos de su obra, un par de capítulos, o ficción corta (historias cortas, micro-ficción) para que la gente se interese en su obra. Algunos autores publican obras completas, pero por entregas, como Charles Dickens y muchos novelistas victorianos solían hacer. Usan Wattpad como una forma de poner a prueba su escritura, observar las reacciones de los lectores y recoger comentarios. También se puede utilizar como un empujón a seguir escribiendo, especialmente si recibes muchos comentarios y la gente te dice que están esperando el siguiente capítulo. Frank, por ejemplo, publicó su última novela, ‘Soy un asesino… sin serie’ por entregas en Wattpad, y recibió muchos comentarios muy positivos. Ahora el libro está publicado en Amazon y por eso no está ya disponible en Wattpad.Y si sois escritores podéis enviarles mensajes a todos vuestros seguidores y también le podéis dedicar un capítulo o todo un libro a alguien. Podéis sugerir el repertorio y los actores que podría interpretar a los personajes, subir fotos o vídeos (hay mucha fan-fiction). También hay concursos y premios varios, pero no he tenido tiempo de investigar mucho.

Como lector puedes seguir la obra de un autor y entonces recibes avisos cuando publican algo nuevo. Además de poder dejar comentarios sobre la obra de otros y votar si os gusta, también podéis enviar mensajes directamente al autor. Como lectora he descubierto a escritores muy interesantes, aunque tengo que reconocer que lo de leer historias por entregas se me hace difícil a veces, especialmente porque a menudo descubro a alguien que lleva medio libro publicado, y no consigo encontrar el tiempo para empezar a leer la historia desde el principio. Pero de todas formas me lo paso bien. Y la variedad que se puede encontrar allí es alucinante. Si os interesan géneros de lectura específicos podéis haceros miembros de clubes que los sigan, e incluso hay clubes para gente a la que le interesa más la tecnología y hay muchos artistas que se dedican a practicar creando portadas para escritores.

En cuanto a mi experiencia como escritora, no sé qué decir. No conozco muy bien el formato, y no me di cuenta hasta hace poco de que para publicar una historia por entregas tienes que añadir partes nuevas a la historia inicial en lugar de publicar los capítulos por separado (que es lo que empecé  a hacer con un libro que escribí hace muchos años. Lo he republicado ahora como es debido pero he perdido los datos de los números de lectores. Sigo sin saber por qué hubo mucha más gente que leyó el capítulo 2 que el resto, pero…Por cierto, gracias Frank, que si no ni me entero).  Como me llevó bastante tiempo el traducir mi último libro Una vez psiquiatra… (ahora publicado) al español, decidí que podría intentar que la gente se interesara publicando la primera historia en Wattpad. De hecho empecé con la idea de publicar el principio de las tres historias, pero la gente se interesó y me pareció justo publicarla toda. Os dejo el enlace por si no la habéis leído. La mayoría de los comentarios fueron de autores a los que conozco, pero de vez en cuando apareció algún comentario de algún lector al que no conocía de nada.

Ahora estoy escribiendo el segundo libro en una serie juvenil, ‘Asuntos Angélicos’ (probablemente. El título en español no está completamente decidido). He empezado a publicar la primera novela de la serie, ‘Alerta Pink’ (la protagonista principal se llama Petra pero no le gusta su nombre y prefiere Pink… y ya os contaré el resto más adelante), de momento solo en inglés, para animarme a seguir escribiendo, y darme la oportunidad de ver qué reacción obtengo (si hay alguna). De momento (ando por el capítulo 5), tengo algunos votos y lectores, pero no hay comentarios. Ya veremos. Por si acaso leéis inglés y os apetece, aquí está:

Wattpad. Come and visit!

Hi all:

I was wondering about what to write and had a few ideas, but this being (mostly) a blog about writing, books, writers (with other fancies in the mix, like film reviews, comments about family history, fitness regimes, mindfulness…), I thought and invitation to visit Wattpad wouldn’t be amiss. I suspect most of you must know this site by now. According to Wikipedia:

‘Wattpad is an online community themed around writing and story-telling.’ The site brings together readers and writers, and it is free for both. Wattpad is based in Toronto, and was born in 2006 of collaboration between Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen.  They have received funding, have included classics from Project Gutenberg, have been accused of turning a blind eye to piracy, have introduced awards, have created Apps…

According to Wikipedia, 5 out of 10 users are in the US although its use is widespread.

I was introduced to it by writer Frank Spoiler, who is quite fond of the site (so it’s evidently used in Spain too) and was intrigued.

How do writers use it?

That varies. As far as I can gather from the site, some people seem to exclusively publish their work in Wattpad. Some people publish snippets of their work, a couple of chapters, or shorter fiction (short stories) to get people interested in their writing. Some authors publish complete works, but in instalments, like Charles Dickens and many other Victorian novelists used to do. They use Wattpad as a way of testing their work, gathering reactions, comments. It also can serve as a prompt to carry on writing, especially if you get many comments and people tell you they’re waiting for the next chapter. Frank, for example, published his latest novel, ‘Soy un asesino…sin serie’ (I’m an assassin…without a series’) by instalments in Wattpad, receiving many positive comments. Now the book has been published in Amazon and as a result is no longer available in Wattpad. (Sorry, at the moment his novel is not available in English.)If you’re a writer you can send messages to all your followers. You can also dedicate a chapter or a whole book to somebody. You can also suggest the cast for your story, the actors who could play the parts, and you can also add pictures and videos (there is plenty of fan-fiction.) There are also contests and groups, but I haven’t had much time to investigate those.

If you are a reader, you can follow people’s work and then you get notified when they publish something new. Apart from leaving comments in people’s work and voting for it if you like it, you can also send direct messages to people there.  As a reader I have discovered very interesting people there, although must admit  I find quite difficult sometimes the reading in instalments, as in many occasions I discover somebody half-way through a book or a story and struggle to find time to go back to the beginning. But hey, I enjoy it nonetheless. And the variety of stuff you can find there is mindboggling. You can join groups to fit your specific reading interests and there are groups for artist who like to create covers and get experience trying new things.

What has my experience been like? Well, not sure. I’m still not very familiar with the site, and realised that if you’re doing a series of a whole book you should add parts rather than publishing them independently (that is what I started doing with a book I wrote many years back. Now I have gone back and republished it linking it all together, but that results in numbers of readers for the individual chapters disappearing. I still don’t know why many more people read chapter 2 than any other chapters). As I was taking quite long translating my latest book (now published) to Spanish, I decided to get people a bit more interested by publishing the first story complete in Wattpad, in Spanish. I started with the idea of publishing only the beginning of the three stories, but people seemed intrigued and felt it was only fair. In case you read Spanish, I leave you the link at the end of the post.  I mostly get comments from people I know, but  I have the odd comment by people I don’t.

Now I’m writing the second book on a series of Young Adult books I’m working on, ‘Angelic Business’. I have started publishing the first book in the series, already finished, called ‘Pink Matters’ (the main protagonist is a girl called Petra but she prefers to be called Pink… and if you want to know anything else, go and read it!), as a way of keeping me going with the writing, and to give me an opportunity to see what the reaction is like. So far, there are some stars and readers, but no comments…We’ll see.  Just in case you fancy having a look, here it is:

Jorge Manrique. Coplas por la muerte de su padre

Hoy he decidido volver a los clásicos. No sé por qué lleva varios días rondándome por la cabeza lo de ‘Nuestras vidas son los río que van a dar en la mar que es el morir…’ así que pensé que debía ser que Jorge Manrique tenía ganas de venir de visita al blog.

Detalles de su biografía son mínimos, aunque os dejo algunos enlaces. Hay muchos más análisis e información sobre su obra, que aunque escasa (ya que el escritor murió a los 39 años y la guerra le dio mucho que hacer) se ha convertido en un clásico, con motivos.

Biografía:

No se sabe con seguridad la fecha ni lugar de su nacimiento, aunque se menciona el 1440 y Paredes de Nava (Palencia) o Segura de la Sierra (Jaén). Hijo de familia noble, su padre, Don Rodrigo de Manrique (Mestre de la Orden de Santiago)  se casó con doña Mencía de Figueroa que falleció cuando Manrique era muy joven. Su padre se volvió a casar, dos veces, primero con doña Beatriz de Guzmán y, tras su muerte, con doña Elvira de Castañeda.

Jorge Manrique se casó con la hermana más joven de Elvira, Guiomar, en 1470 y tuvieron dos hijos. Como muchos caballeros de su época además de poeta también se dedicaba a las armas, y apoyó a Isabel de Castilla durante la guerra de Sucesión Castellana (1475-1479) que terminó con la ascensión de Isabel al trono, y establecería el reinado de los Reyes Católicos.

Su padre murió en 1476 y Manrique murió en 1479, herido durante una batalla contra el marqués de Villena (frente al castillo de Garcimuñoz). Está enterrado en el monasterio de Uclés.

He leído que encontraron entre sus ropas, a su muerte, estos versos inéditos hasta entonces: “¡Oh mundo!, pues que me matas/ fuera la vida que distes/ toda vida/ mas según acá nos tratas/ lo mejor y menos triste/ es la partida”.

Su tío Gómez Manrique era también poeta y el Marqués de Santillana también era pariente suyo.

Su obra más conocida son las Coplas que escribió a la muerte de su padre, y que fueron publicadas en Sevilla. En total publicó unos 40 poemas, muchos amorosos y algunos satíricos, típicos de los poemas de cancioneriles de la época, aunque las coplas se destacan por salirse de las convenciones poéticas y tratarse de una creación más personal y expresiva.

Lope de Vega dijo que las Coplas merecían estar escritas ‘en letras de oro’.
