Beyond The Fray by Cassandra Violet

so, it's been like FOREVER since i've last shared some good tunes with you all outside of my book playlists. and honestly, i really ought to be hiding in my writing cave, finishing up a book i'm under deadline for. but! i still get emails from artists and bands all the time, so maybe i'll have to find some time to pass along some of the stuff i get with you all still.

to make a long story short (haha), i hopped on the computer tonight all ready to get back to work when i got an email from somebody claiming to be a big fan of mine who wanted me to have a listen to their music. um, well, i honestly have no idea if she's an actual fan of my books or not (haha), but i did hop on over to her soundcloud link to have a listen (which, for some reason, did not work on my computer) so I threw chance to the wind and downloaded the song.

and guys . . . i totally dig it. and her.

ANYWAY. here are the deets:

cassandra viole t is an angeleno native (represent!) who has a indie-folk feel to her music that reminds me in a weird way of a modern mash-up between joni mitchell (ahhh, joni) with a little bit of nanci griffith and/or lucy kaplansky . or maybe that's just me? long time you readers, you will immediately see why my ears perked up, because there are clap/stomps in beyond the fray . i do love me some clap/stomps something fierce. had violet thrown in a banjo, i might have just clapped like a seal.

fingers crossed that you can get the soundcloud to work better than i . . .

i headed over to violet's bandcamp site to have a listen to the rest of the EP beyond the fray is from and kind of sort of (okay REALLY) fell in love with sail the ocean . sa-woon. this song will definitely be in my rotation, friends. i obviously ran straight to iTunes and bought it. and i might just be writing to it tonight.

<a href="http://cassandraviolet.bandcamp.com/a... the Fray by Cassandra Violet</a>

i'd love to be your widow
i'd love to be your wife
and i'd abandon my home in the middle on the night
though i know in my bones
that it's just not right
i'd sail the ocean

violet will be releasing the beyond the fray EP, along with a brand spankin' new video for the single, on march 28th. she'll also be having a show over at the sublime hotel cafe here in LA on the same night at 9pm. i'm bummed i'll miss it, but i'll be on a secret trip to research a book i'm working on!

Blog Tour: FINDING JUNE by Caitlin Kerry's Playlist!

As you guys probably know, being a so-called music snob, I love me a good playlist. And friends, as I know Caitlin Kerry has an excellent ear for music, I'm pleased as punch to share her writing playlist for her debut novel FINDING JUNE. It's a great one! (*scurries away to add songs to Spotify playlists*)

Up first, though, all the deets on the book:

FINDING JUNE by Caitlin Kerry
Genre: New Adult 17+ Publication Date: March 4, 2014 Event organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc.

~ Book Synopsis ~
Tell me your story June....June thought she had it all. She soon found out how wrong she was. Her dreams of finding the good life were washed away when she was dumped on the sandy beaches of Mexico. Now back in Boise as an overeducated server, she doesn't even know where to begin on fixing her life. But one thing June does know is the new guy at work is one to stay away from. Reece Day catches June’s attention, even if she doesn’t want it. Reece has the uncanny ability to always get in the last word, to get under June’s skin, making her question what she really wants in life. June quickly realizes that for the first time in her life, she finally has the chance to find herself.

I am a huge music nerd. Always have been. Music is essential to my writing process and some songs got major play while writing FINDING JUNE. I listened to a lot of Sufjan Stevens, Daughter, The Helio Sequence and Josh Ritter while writing FINDING JUNE.  A fun fact: In the first draft of the book, I had wonderfully thought out quotes I picked from songs and used as Chapter Headers. Sadly, I ended up not putting them in the final version of the book. There is a playlist, though, at the end of the book with the songs used in order of chapter. So make sure to check that out! Today I am going to give a little insight with a handful of the songs that didn’t make it into the final version and the story behind them. Enjoy!

“Well I’ve lost it all, I’m just a silhouette” Youth by Daughter
Finding June opened with this song. I read once that Daughter (and this song in particular) was just really good for NA in general. I couldn’t help but agree! As a 20 something myself, I feel lost at least once a week. On a good week ;) But June finds herself in a spot in her life where she doesn’t really know what’s next. It’s hard at this age to make decisions and know if they are the right ones.

“And the only thing that’s certain is that sometimes you are bound to fall”            Tight Rope by Alex Clare
I find this just to be good life advice. And the chapter it was part of, well June finds herself falling in many ways. But this also plays into the pressure June feels to be everything everyone wants her to be. Again, something I think is common to 20 something’s. The pressure to be all the things can be overwhelming and knowing that it’s okay if things don’t go the way they are “supposed” to can make life a lot easier!
“There are times life will rattle your bones            And will bend your limbs            You’re still far away the boy you’ve ever been”            Dear Avery by The Decembrists
GAH. This song. This song is all about Reece Day. I lost track of how many times I listened to this song. Reece is such a special character to me, he is light and wisdom to June but that doesn’t mean his story is perfect either. While June is trying to find herself, Reece is trying to find his home. There were so many times I was writing scenes with Reece and just in tears over his story. I wish this song was called Dear Reece.

“I traced my fingers along your trails            And your body was the map, I was lost in it all”            Your Rocky Spine by Great LakeSwimmers
I’m a huge nature lover. So this song was all about the connection, physical and emotional, between Reece and June. And it used these beautiful lyrics about lakes and glaciers and I was totally sold. This song was used during a scene that involved a cabin and was one of my favorite parts of the book. I encourage you to look up all of the lyrics of this song because it’s truly beautiful.

“Lucky are you who finds me in the wilderness”            Bone of Song by Josh Ritter
Backstory on this song. I’m a huge Josh Ritter fan (Idaho represent!) and was needing a song for part of the book. I was hiking (see, nature lover) on my birthday and on the way done I played some Josh Ritter. This song came on and in that moment when I heard that line, it was perfect for June! Plus Josh Ritter songs are just simply amazing J

Please check out the full FINDING JUNE playlist. It has the songs listed in the back of the book, as well as the music in the book and other songs that got constant play. Enjoy!

Blog Tour: CONTROL YOU by Jennifer Snyder!

I'm thrilled to be able to share with you an excerpt from CONTROL YOU, Jennifer Snyder's latest book! I just adore Jennifer's writing and stories, don't you?

Here's the 411 on this New Adult Contemporary Romance:

CONTROL YOU by Jennifer Snyder

Kind hearted and naive, Paige Jacobs wants what every girl craves…to be loved. She uses this need to make excuses when her current boyfriend goes from being a tad jealous and slightly overprotective to stalker-ish. She isn’t that girl and Craig isn’t one of those guys. Things are fine. Perfectly fine. Until the moment a dark-haired, tattooed hottie with a snarky mouth walks into her life and tells her she deserves better.

Confident and boldly spoken, Cameron Green has always been the guy bad girls can’t get enough of and all the good girls want to tame. He’s lived a lavish lifestyle filled with drugs, women, and alcohol up until his destructive path finally caught up with him. Now Cameron isn’t sure what to do with himself or how to dampen the longing for something more festering inside of him since coming out of his drug-induced haze. But when he meets a doe-eyed girl who gets past his walls like no other, everything about him clicks into place. Together the two learn there are emotions that hold within them all the power to control you…

“What’s the tattoo on your wrist say?” she asked, pointing.     I took in another drag before holding my wrist out so she could read it. Here it was—the moment when my past would catch up with me and make me seem either unstable or sexy as fuck.     “A man can be destroyed but not defeated. It’s a Hemingway quote.”     Her delicate hand reached out and gripped my wrist. The coldness from her touch seeped through my skin and chilled me to the bone. She pulled my wrist closer to her face so she could see it better in the yellow lights of the strip. I held my breath as her index finger came out to stroke the scar the words covered, sending those chills all the way to my groin. Ah hell, I was excited by her touch.     “It’s a reminder?” she asked in a whisper.     “Yeah, one I need some days more than others,” I admitted. There was no point in lying.     Her brown eyes locked with mine. “Sometimes we all need to be reminded of things worth remembering.”     Her voice was soft and sad. It pulled at the edges of my heart and made every cell in my body want to press my lips to hers. But I didn’t. Instead, I forced myself to behave. I swallowed hard and licked my lips, before taking another drag off my cigarette.     “True,” I muttered.     “Can I see the other one?” She released my wrist and gripped my other arm without waiting for me to answer. “Another Hemingway quote?”     “It is.” I continued to stare at her as she reread the words. A gentle breeze fluffed the fine hairs around her face, causing a few wisps to slide across her cheek. This girl was stunning and the best part was she didn’t even seem to know it. Not entirely.     Paige let my arm drop back to my side. “Wow, those are some deep quotes. I think I’ll have to give Hemingway a try sometime.”     “You should. He’s a freaking genius.”     “Do you have any more tattoos?”     I took the last drag off my cigarette and dropped it in one of those ashtrays made to put them out. Shifting my eyes to meet hers, I decided I couldn’t let this moment slide, and said the first answer that came into my mind when she’d asked. “Yeah, but I’m not sure I can show them to you in public.” I winked. Her cheeks flushed and her eyes widened, but she didn’t look away—just the reaction I’d wanted.     “Really?” She arched an eyebrow at me.     I laughed. “No, not really. I was just messing with you.”     She broke into a grin and slapped my chest playfully. “I seriously believed you for a second, thinking you had a tattoo of some sort imprinted on your butt or something!”     “My butt, huh? I don’t think I’ve ever had a woman admit they were thinking about my butt before. This is a new one.” I grinned. She laughed louder, her gorgeous smile widening. I chuckled and shook my head.

Reece’s deep voice cut through my thoughts. “So, tell me your story June?” I glanced up to see Reece filling the last of the pepper shakers and moving on to the salt. “My story?” My story. Not anyone else’s but my own. “Yeah, your story. What’s the story of June Rosewood?” His gaze drifted up to mine, his face holding a look of curiosity, like I was a book he wanted to open, to discover what was written on my pages.I shrugged my shoulder. “I don’t know. I don’t really have a story. I’m a typical girl trying to figure it out.” His gaze on me seemed innocent but it felt like it was more, like he was asking me who I was and I couldn’t give him an answer.“I don’t buy it. Everyone has a story.” Every time he spoke, he had confidence in his words, not in a way that was cocky but like he was sure of what he was saying and wasn’t going to be affected by my attempts to brush him off. I shook my head. “Sorry to disappoint, but my story is pretty lame and right now, in revision. No one would be interested in it.”This time, Reece stopped filling the salt shakers and focused all of his attention on me. “That’s not true. I’m interested in your story. I want to know your story, even if it’s not perfect.”His words threw me. “Why? You just met me and I haven’t been the most pleasant.” Understatement. Oh, and the whole “incident” from the first day. All strikes against me. “It doesn’t make sense.” His attention never wavered from me even when I went back to stacking plates. “Maybe that is why I want to know.”I laughed. “Because I was a bitch. Sure, that totally makes sense.” “Honestly, I think it’s a front, only a superficial layer of your story, and it makes me want to dig deeper. And if you don’t know your whole story right now? That’s okay. I don’t mind hearing it in bits and pieces. Tell me a tiny piece of your story June?” By now I couldn’t focus on cleaning the table. I moved around the table and sat in the chair, only feet away from Reece. This man was different from anyone I had ever met. I felt like a mouth drawn to a flame. His features were handsome, one of the most attractive men I had encountered. His hair fell in his eyes and his lips looked inviting, all of it inciting me. But what really got me was his words. His words drew me in, even if the rational part of my brain was telling me to resist. He cocked his head and tipped his head, encouraging me to tell him something. “I…” I couldn’t even figure out something worthwhile to share with Reece, to keep him interested in my so called story.“Don’t think too hard about it. The first thing that pops in your head.”“I like music.” It was true, music was a soothing balm when I needed a moment away from the frantic pace of life.Reece nodded his head, like he approved of my answer, a content look on his face. “I do too. All right, a true music lover’s question. Which do you like better, the original Wonderwall by Oasis or Ryan Adams’ version of it?”  Reece pointed up the ceiling and as I tuned my ears in, I heard the Ryan Adam’s version through the speakers. I laughed and this time it wasn’t one full of snark. “Is it bad if I say Ryan Adams’ version?”He turned in the booth, facing me. “No, not at all. Why?” “I’m all for the original, it’s a great song but Ryan Adams’ version is haunting and at moments demands you to listen to it, but then fades again into only soft sung words. Oasis’s version is like an orchestra and Ryan Adams’ has as much power in the song with only a few instruments and his voice.” I was surprised at myself, the passion I had just spoken with. I looked over at Reece for his reaction and saw his eyes roam over me. “That’s beautiful.” It was soft spoken but his words crushed around me, the quiet of his voice leaving no room to hide from. I blushed as his words, amazed at what a simple word can do. He wasn’t calling me beautiful but it had been a long time since anyone had directed that word towards me. He continued on, easing the moment we just had, “I tend to agree with you. I actually heard the Ryan Adams’ version before I heard Oasis. I guess that version stuck with me more.”“Where did you hear it from?” His gaze went beyond me and for a moment he looked like he was somewhere else. “From someone who played a role in my story.” He looked back at me and I sat there with nothing to say, though I suddenly felt pretty interested in his story.
