Twitter Co-Founder’s Second Best Idea

.

Square-Credit-Card-Reader

Square Credit Card Reader

.

Imagine, you are at a function, such as a party or book signing and someone wants to buy a signed copy of your book directly from you, but has no cash on hand. How useful would it be to accept a credit card for your sales (besides that, spending increases more, when using credit cards). This transaction is now possible with a tiny device, you attach to your cell phone, called the “Square“.

It is the second revolutionary idea Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has helped to create and transform into a viable business: Square Inc., a mobile credit card reader and business management system. Canada is the first stop in Square’s global expansion, after the successful launch in the States. “We want to carry out every transaction in the world,” he’s said – not a small dream.

A small, free (and yes, square-shaped) plastic card-swipe reader that plugs into an iPhone, iPad or Android. It allows registered sellers to accept Visa and Mastercard purchases, with a 2.75 per cent fee per transaction. Two million individuals and merchants now use Square in the U.S. to record $8 billion in annual sales. Starbucks added the Square payment system to 7,000 U.S. stores last fall, and bought a $25-million stake in the company.

Square’s free app gives retailers business tools to track sales, taxes, inventory and popular items; it can identify new customers and give them an incentive to return with discounts or loyalty programs.

Forbes, which recently added Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey as a billionaire member of its famed list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, calls him “nerdier than Steve Jobs” and “a disrupt-er on an epic scale.” Certainly, he builds big dreams from small ideas: a tiny plastic dongle, or a blogging site designed so even those using the most primitive cellphones can tap out 140 characters and participate in the global conversation. BTW, Jack Dorsey’s favored writers are Ernest Hemingway, William Gibson and Margaret Atwood.

Not only writers can sell their books everywhere they are, performing artists for example can sell their records/DVD’s or any other art work right away after performances to their fans. It’s possibilities are endless: garage sales, antique shows, farmers markets … these tiny devices are tremendously useful just everywhere to do payment transactions. Anyone who’s selling anything, be it at a yard sale or a bake sale, collecting donations, or if you’re a music teacher or a gardener, you can now accept credit cards. Jack Dorsey expects individuals and small retailers will be the early adapters. You can start to accept credit cards today, get your free card reader for your phone at Square.

How I Survived – Gloria Gaynor Might Publish Your Story

.

Gloria Gaynor

Gloria Gaynor

.

Famous singer Gloria Gaynor wrote her story of a life-altering accident in a recent Huffington-Post online article:

“The “Queen is dead,” was the report rumored to be circulating around my record company. A few weeks before, I had fallen on stage, jumped back up, and continued my show, including the rigorous choreography. I went out to breakfast after the show, gone home and off to bed. The next morning I felt refreshed. But then I reached for the phone to call my boyfriend and could not turn completely over. I tried to turn over again and felt an excruciating pain that hit me in my back … “. Read the whole story on Huffington Post.

.

However, Gloria Gaynor (born Gloria Fowles on September 7, 1949 in Newark, New Jersey) is not only a great singer, but also writes. She will publish a book with real-life stories that read like fiction – maybe your story too:

Have you survived an illness, personal tragedy, abusive relationship, financial ruin, or other life experience that brought you to your knees?  Did the disco-era song “I Will Survive,” by Grammy Award-winning songstress Gloria Gaynor, inspire you to rise and thrive?

.

If so, we’d love to share your story in a new book of personal narrative essays that tell the story of how you survived the experience and how the song influenced your life. We’re looking for real-life stories that read like fiction—similar to the stories in the “Cup of Comfort” book series, compiled and edited by Colleen Sell.

The book will include 50 stories of 1,000-2,000 words each. For each essay selected for publication in the book, the author will receive $75, a complimentary copy of the book signed by Gloria Gaynor, and a signed photo of Ms. Gaynor. Well, it’s not a big money maker, but it could be satisfying to write your story and maybe see it in a celebrity book. Start for a freelancing career? Who knows. Listen to her music on YouTube.

What Every Author Should Know

.

Where are these big publishers heading?

.

When consulting / coaching our clients, helping them with their book marketing, we often have to watch them coming to a screeching hold when they try to organize special sales or free days: authors cannot change prices, text or anything else on their retailers account if they go with a publisher. No matter if it is a traditional big publisher or one of these “vanity” publishers, as only those can go into the retailers account – unless they give their authors the keyword and other details and the permission to do changes on the sales page.

.

Every writer, no matter if they author-publish (really self-publish) or if they have sold their manuscript, they have to do their own marketing. But how can you do it, if you are on the mercy of a publisher – real or vanity? If you don’t own the ISBN and if they have no access to they retailers publishing pages?

.

This is a huge problem (among many others) that authors face after they have given away their work for pittance – or worse, have paid thousands of dollars to a vanity firm. So, what’s the difference between both, beside the fact that they hinder the authors in their marketing efforts?

.

Traditional Publishers

Accept very few submissions
Authors receive a small advance and royalties
They do not use print on demand (single or few books)
Authors have barely any say to cover image, publishing date etc.
It takes very long until the book is published
Publisher pays for printing, editing services and cover image
Distribution services are covered by the publisher
Professional marketing services available – but only for celebrity writers
They own the ISBN for the book

.

Vanity Publisher

Accepts almost all submissions
Author never receives any advance
Author pays for printing, editing services
Quick turnaround and Print on Demand
Barely any distribution services
No professional marketing services
Very few royalties – if any at all
They own the ISBN for the book

.

Why not self-publish?

If an author has all these challenges, waiting times (or costs to cover in the worst scenario) – and cannot even do the necessary marketing without huge problems, what’s the point in having a publisher? Why not author-publish / self-publish in the first place, and be independent when it comes to marketing?

Libraries: More Popular Than Ever!

.

The public library: Historic artifact or adaptive success

Courtesy of: CityTownInfo.com

infographics/public-library-adaptive-success

.

In the face of new technologies, libraries are adapting to a new reality and they are more popular than ever!

81 % of American adults use the Internet and almost as many people agree that free computer and internet access (including Wi-Fi) are very important services that libraries offer. 62% of libraries are the sole provider of computers and Wi-Fi for free in their community.  Libraries also offer technology assistance, help with social services applications, tutoring and advice for job-seeking patrons.

.

Between 2000 and 2009, public libraries increased by 1.7 percent, but the national population increased by 11.7 percent.

.

San Antonio, Texas, is planning to open a public library without books this fall.  Instead, it will have computers, tablets, laptops and e-readers with pre-loaded titles.  While the book-less library has been attempted in the U.S. in 2002, it didn’t last: patrons eventually asked for actual books.

Surprising E-Book Reading Study

.

Tablet Reader

Tablet Reader

.

Book Industry Study Group announced their findings of a survey, comparing e-reader and tablet users and what they read:

Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading

The survey shows that 44 percent of e-book readers prefer a tablet, up from 37 percent in the August 2012 survey.  During the same period, respondents’ choice of a dedicated e-reader fell from 49 percent to 42 percent.  The study suggests the trend will continue as respondents’ intent to purchase a dedicated e-reader has dropped, while intent to purchase has remained consistent for tablets, at about 37 percent.

.

Understanding device choice is important as the survey reveals further correlation between device choice and genre preference, with certain fiction genres continuing to dominate on dedicated e-readers, while some specialized nonfiction genres perform better on other devices.

Those who prefer dedicated e-readers were more likely to select general fiction, mystery, literary fiction, or romance as key e-book genres than users of other types of devices.
How-to guides and manuals were more popular with those who prefer reading e-books on personal computers.
Consumers who prefer e-reading via smartphones were more likely to read travel books than either tablet or dedicated e-reader users.

.

The study also shows the consistent upward swing in preference for e-books over print. About 82 percent of Power Buyers (consumers who acquire e-books on a weekly basis) say they prefer e-books over print and nearly 70 percent of Non-Power Buyers say they now prefer e- over print.

You Are Not Alone – Get a Mentor

.

You Are Not Alone

.

You just wanted to write – and upload your book to Amazon, expecting that it becomes an instant hit. The writing – your skills – an art you mastered, is making you proud. However the publishing / marketing process feels scary … and you never before thought about becoming an entrepreneur.

.

Sure, you know all the benefits of self-publishing:

Author-publishing brought your book much faster to market, than waiting almost two years till it hits the shelves, even if you got a publishing contract
The marketing part will always be completely on you, no matter if you self-publish or if you go with a big traditional publisher
As a self-publisher you keep full control over the book design, the sales outlets, the price and the time your book will be on the market (maybe forever) – just to name a few
if your book is successful you can make a lot more money than a “published author”

Author Interview: Lawrence Winkler

.

In 1980, a maverick young doctor gave it all up, to hitchhike around the world. He wrote four books about his experience, which I personally find some of the best travel literature, even topping my earlier favorite, Bill Bryson.

.

Lawrence Winkler

Lawrence Winkler

His name is Dr. Lawrence Winkler, now a medical professor  on Vancouver Island, Canada, from whom you would not expect sentences like these:

.

“Tip the world on one side & everything loose will land in Los Angeles”,

.

“We honed the fine art of stuffing a Falafel, so a dollar could last all day” or

.

“If you want to sell your whisky to buy hashish, I may be of service, he said…”

.

I really love to read his books and have the honor today to interview him.

 .

What inspired you to start writing?

I had promised my father that I would someday write a book about my hitchhiking trip around the world. He was a pillar, a good man, and not quite convinced that my wanderlust was anything other than a selfish indulgence.  Unfortunately, he died before I finally began typing the story. My writing was initially an exercise in legitimization. But then- I discovered that I had entered a new universe, which was not only wonderfully fulfilling, it was fun.

.

How would you describe your books to someone who has not yet read them?

The most fascinating books I’ve read have always been narratives that were alive on many different levels. So far I have written two kinds of books. The first, ‘Westwood Lake Chronicles’ is a dreamscape diary of our deliberate attempt to live with nature, under the inexorable development pressures of the exploding population around us. The second set of books, a quadrilogy of a five year hitchhiking trip around the world in the 1980′s, is an attempt to present the world, as close to the ground as I found it, as an odyssey that defined my identity and destiny. I believe I have written the consummate epic travelogue, like no other you will ever read.

.

Is there a message in your books that you want your readers to grasp?

I would like my readers to see the fine interconnection of many aspects of life that they may not have previously understood to have any connection at all. I want them to see how complex and sophisticated and intricate, and yet how simple, the richness of this experience is. I hope to inspire them to see the little details as the great whole, and how the quantum is related to the cosmic, how the tragic and comic duality of our short existence is the source of how deep and wide we can live.

.

Are your characters based on real people?

Oh, yeah. But I hope they don’t notice, and I will deny it, if anyone else does.

.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Tough one. Steve of the Jacuzzi is an archetype, and still a best friend. Gold Tooth was comical, Hair Trigger Ray dangerous and tragic, Mike and Mike were Doonesburyesque, and I never saw them again. Wayne the Rock was personified evil, Harold Broomberg and Mr. Godfrey saints, Mama Szlapak  an oracle, and they were just in Orion’s Cartwheel, the first book of the quadrilogy. But I loved Hungry Butterfly, the Japanese guy who escaped his father’s factory to travel in Eastern Europe, and found his own liberation. Hahahaha.

.

Are your plots based on your real-life experiences?

Absolutely.

.

Give us an excerpted quote from your favorite review of a book:

“Not a gulp-able book – should be savored in sips.”

.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you have learned as a writer from then to now?

That it is always possible to do better, if you care enough to slow down, and take the time.

.

Considering a book from the first word you write to the moment you see it on a bookstore shelf, what’s your favorite part of the process? What’s your least favorite?

I actually have yet to see my words on a bookstore shelf, as I have yet to produce a physical print copy. My most favorite part of the creative process is seeing a large number of ideas separated by what I had thought were insurmountable barriers avalanche into a brilliant epiphany. My least favorite part of the creative process is, having to exclude the many other people and things I love about life, to concentrate my efforts on creating the circumstances for this to occur.

.

Hind Cartwheel.

What genre have you not yet written but really want to try?

Poetry. But not yet.

.

If your books would be made into a movie, who should play the main character?

Johnny Depp.

.

How did you get published? Please share your own personal journey.

Its a work in progress. I had an agent, but I think she was stuck in the headlights of the current revolution in publishing. So far, I’ve done it myself. I’d rather be writing than marketing, so I will likely look for a print publisher after I finish my current infatuation with ‘Stories of the Southern Sea.’ I’ve learned that there is a lot of published nonsense, even more unpublished brilliance, and a vast number of brilliant authors that were either discovered long after they departed this mortal coil, or never were discovered. For me, it’s not about the notoriety, it’s about the notation.

.

What do you find is the best part of being an author?

The perfect peaceful solitude in imprinting your thoughts on an otherwise uncaring universe, one irrevocable word at a time.

.

What’s one thing that your readers would be surprised to know about you?

How amazed I still continue to be at how amazing this journey still is.

.
