SUCCESSFUL PUBLISHING NEWSLETTER MARCH 2024
Content of the March newsletter:
– WRITING CONTESTS
– WRITERS RESIDENCIES, FELLOWSHIPS, & GRANTS
– FREELANCE WRITING
Welcome to our March Writing and Publishing Newsletter!
I just came across this article (excerpt) on the Internet when searching for the word ¨March.
¨How (writing) habits are formed: Rather than thinking about the left and right sides of the brain, think instead of the front and back. The front of the brain processes new information. That new information, if repeated often enough (30 days), moves to the back of the brain to form habits. Once things are habits, they become easier to do because we no longer have to think about doing them.¨
And I have been asking myself for the hundredth time: Why does a writer have to motivate her or himself to sit down and hone their craft? I have never read, heard, or seen a creative profession where people have to motivate themselves. Why is it that writers constantly complain about ¨ writer’s block?¨
Why is it that writers are not getting up in the morning and looking forward working on their next novel or non-fiction article? Why is it a drag for them to write their next book?
If writing 150-page books is too much, why not write articles or short stories? Participate in writing contests, contribute articles to magazines or newspapers, or apply for a free writer residency to charge you creativity and meet like-minded souls. Attend a writer’s conference or workshops. Also, check out the many lucrative fellowships in our newsletters. Getting paid for what you (hopefully) love: WRITING

Tips for Successful Publishing – Newsletter December 2023

– WRITERS RESIDENCIES
.
Hello Writer and Publishing Friends,
Christmas is only three weeks away and another year is almost over… Get some new Contest and Writer Residency ideas and encouragement for the next twelve months in this December Newsletter. But most important of all: Make a backup of your computer! Don’t make the same error as I … Read on:
In many articles and my workshops, I often warned other professionals to make frequent backups of their computers – not to lose any content.
The worst thing that could happen, happened …
I worked on my laptop in the palapa where there is always a cool breeze. Seconds after I got up to grab a water bottle on the counter, a strong wind blew my laptop with a loud pang from the table onto the concrete floor.
The screen turned black and I couldn’t get it back to life. KATASTROPHY !!!
Every time I prepare for long trips, I make a copy of my computer – but this time I was so extremely busy, that I forgot. I worked during this year intensively on several books, many articles, and hundreds of photos.
Thank goodness, there is an Apple store not too far away and I immediately drove there. The technicians were friendly and helpful and worked right away on it. But as it came to my password, the computer flashed: ERROR.
Even though I have been using the same password for at least 10 years. We tried everything… including a new password with the help of the Apple hotline.
I am devastated as I have not only all my work, manuscripts, all the writing, photos, etc. plus all my passwords, addresses, all my financial and administrative things, including all my bookkeeping, as well as my holiday ticket to Argentina. Thank goodness, I have an online ticket. But all the information about Argentina that I collected in the last months for my trip is gone.
I was considering buying an iPad for my travels as it is lighter and smaller, but after I used a borrowed one for two days, I gave up the idea and purchased a new Macbook Air, which cost less than in Canada but only $100 more than an iPad. However, so far I could not find a professional – aka a hacker – who could go around passwords and bring back my laptop content.
To sum it up: DO WHAT I SAY, NOT WHAT I DO : )

Welcome to this October Newsletter!
“October: sunny days and crisp, cool nights, a time to curl up around the dancing flames and sink into a good book.” ~ John Sinor. Yes, it’s my favored month of the year too. It is the month of glory, of ripeness, a picture-perfect month. Pumpkin pie and spiced coffee, glorious tree colors, mild Indian Summer weather, colorful leaves, delicious food and wine, country hikes – and yes, lots of new books to read – and to write!
– AMAZON’s CHANGES to Book Categories
The Amazon book categories you choose will have a direct effect on whether or not you become an Amazon bestselling author. Choose the wrong one, and no matter how many books you sell, you won’t become an Amazon bestseller. Choose the right one, and you could become a daily bestseller with minimal marketing or effort – yeah, it can be that easy… but only if you know what you’re looking for.
In truth, there is a lot more to choosing Amazon book categories. There are secret Kindle categories that Amazon doesn’t tell you about when publishing, and the simple fact that you can only have 3 Amazon Book categories and ebook categories legitimately, makes it all the more important to choose carefully. More importantly, Amazon has made some changes to the way they do categories.

– AI at Amazon
Dave at Kindlepreneur kindlepreneur.com just reported this:
“Basically, Amazon is asking authors to disclose the use of AI in works that use it to generate substantial sections of the text, artwork, or translation. They define AI-generated in this way:
AI-generated: We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered “AI-generated,” even if you applied substantial edits afterward. AI-assisted: If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” Similarly, if you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, this is also considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes.”Other Voices:
When using AI, you are using other people’s voices to write your work. You do not take the time to work through bad manuscripts, stilted sentences, and poor writing to bring out better work that becomes branded with your own unique style of putting words together. That’s because you quit using your own skills to do it. You just copied… Are there good uses for AI? Of course, however, not in creative writing!
Picking a data analyzer depends on your situation. If you have most or all of your books available on Amazon, you can use Book Report (getbookreport.com) to track that information for you. Book Report gathers sales information for all your books, including extended channels. You can check sales by book, country, and your top sellers in easy-to-read charts. The best part is that Book Report is free until you make $1,000 a month on KDP. BookTrakr and Book Report both have free trials so you can check them out before committing. https://janefriedman.com/building-your-brand-on-tiktok-isnt-curation-its-authenticity

– Book Description Help via AI
Writing a compelling book description is sometimes harder than writing the first chapter. But there is maybe help on the way. At least it is worth a trial to use artificial Intelligence (AI) to get suggestions for your book description.
Instructions for using the Book Description Generator:
Select the platform you want to format the description for (Kobo, Amazon, B&N, or distributors such as etc).
Enter your book description. If you’re copying and pasting from Word Doc, use the below sub-steps to ensure you don’t bring over any hidden code from Word:
If you’re on Windows: you can use the combination Ctrl + Shift + V to paste without formatting
If you’re a Mac: you can use Option + Command + Shift + V to paste without formatting
Choose from the available formatting options. If an option is grayed out, that means it’s not supported on that particular platform. If you see other book descriptions looking different than the options available here, that means those books were grandfathered in before the current rules were put in place.
(Optional) If you want AI to improve upon your book description, select the button that says “Once you finish your description, click here to see if AI can improve it!”
When you’ve got your book description looking the way you want, click “generate my code.”
Paste the code into the platform you’re loading your book up.

Your new take, or how you’re advancing an existing story

Have a wonderful June, enjoy reading, writing, and publishing – maybe even traveling!
20 years ago, the famous author Ray Bradbury spoke at Point Loma Nazrene University in San Diego, where he imparted his wisdom: “Read the greatest books, broaden your mind, and write like hell”. However, in an age of instant gratification and overnight success stories, Bradbury’s words of wisdom may fall on deaf ears. Nonetheless, those who are wise will follow Bradbury’s advice.
Have a great summer!
