– ADD PEOPLE
I must admit, I am guilty too: writing non-fiction too dry and with too many facts and not adding real people in some way into the blog or book. Recently I talked to a multi-book writer about it and wrote a blog post last week. Here is an excerpt:

AFAR
The magazine publishes a range of reported features, personal essays, opinion pieces, photo essays, illustrated features, short fiction, poetry, and shorter middle-of-book pieces. Instead of more traditional aspirational lifestyle travel stories, we tell the stories of a place and the people who live there. Their rate starts at $1/word.
https://www.afar.com/about/pitch-guidelines
.
WIRED Magazine
A publication about change—about the ways science and technology are reshaping the world and what it means to be human. While the subjects of WIRED stories run the gamut from deep dives into the biggest tech companies to Hindu extremism to digital blackface to space food to true crime, every story has technology, science, or innovation as one of its key variables. Finished pieces tend to be in the range of 1,200 to 1,800 words. Story fees now start at about $2,500 and rise from there. Other short, online-only content starts at $500 and rises with time commitment and reporting intensity.

.
BOOK PRE-ORDERS
Apple offers a powerful marketing feature on iBooks, and even authors who upload directly to Apple can use it. Your book title can be posted on iBooks for pre-order — up to one year before the book launch — even if you don’t have a book cover or interior file yet. However, it’s advisable to have the cover at least. “e-Books born as pre-orders earned the authors 3 1/2 times more income than books that were simply uploaded on the day of release.
Pre-release twelve months in advance and you have got twelve months of people discovering your book before it hits the market. It means twelve months of additional sales in those first few days. All you need is your metadata: the book title, author, book description, price, pre-order, and release date. A lot more favorable than Amazon’s pre-order conditions! Easy Upload to iBooks: Authors can distribute to iBooks on their own through a direct upload route — or through an aggregator (book distributor) such as Draft2Digital.com

WRITING FOR MAGAZINES – WORTH YOUR TIME?
Why write for magazines and newspapers? If you write articles, you reach many more people than with books. Your book may sell five thousand copies. Certainly, some books turn into bestsellers, but with more than 500,000 new books per year, many books are fortunate to sell even a thousand copies. With one article, you can reach millions of people.
Writing for magazines will give you increased confidence that you can write for publication and meet word limits and deadlines. A fiction author recently pondered whether writing magazine articles was worth his time. Would his time not be better spent writing for his own blog or website? My answer was that it depends on how many subscribers and readers his website and blog had. Should your blog have less than a million readers per month, consider writing for these magazines with enormous readership numbers:
• Huffington Post: 43 million per month
• Salon: 7.7 million per month
• Travel + Leisure: 950,000 per month
• AARP The Magazine: 21,931,184
• Better Homes and Gardens: 7,624,505
If only one percent of this readership finds your article and the byline with your name, website, and book info, it’s worth it to write for these magazines.
.
Have a wonderful February and enjoy writing and making plans for new books. “Although February is short, it is filled with growing sun, lots of love, and sweet surprises”. Enjoy the many holidays this month: Groundhog Day, Super Bowl, Rosa Parks Day, Chinese New Year, Lincoln’s Birthday, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day.

Sunday Book Review – To Live is to Fly
Sunday Book Review: To Live is to Fly – Memoirs of an Executive Pilot by Doris Daily – September 1, 2019
Book Reviewer D.G. Kaye wrote:
My Sunday Book Review is a little different read today for me. Author – and retired pilot – Doris Heilmann of 111 Publishing had another life before she became an author and publisher – she was a pilot.
“Doris flew planes, taught flying, wrote for aviation magazines and more, and if it weren’t for her eventual two eye surgeries, hindering her from continuing to fly, I have no doubts she’d still be spending half her time up in the air!
Doris wrote this book as ‘Doris Daily’, her pen name for her aviation collection of books and instructionals she’s written. To Live is to Fly is Doris’ newest memoir on her aviation days, and as a memoir writer and a friend of Doris’, I jumped at the chance to read her newest book. Note, various other books published by Doris Heilmann on marketing for self-published authors, I also highly recommend!”
Dreaming of Learning to Fly? And maybe becoming a Commercial Pilot?
Have a seat in the airplane’s cockpit and be entertained by these memoirs of an enthusiast pilot!
.
Observe fascinating flight experiences, technology, and the beauty and forces of nature.
.
Become captivated by the flying world of a professional aviator during the ’80s and early ’90s in Europe.
.
And maybe gain also a few pieces of advice along the way for your own flying career…
.
“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
.
My 5 Star Review:
Memoirs of a pilot
“This book was an easy read, written in conversational style writing, as though I was sitting down with the author (pilot) fixed on her knowledge of flying as an executive pilot and flight instructor, and wowed by some of the experiences she encountered – both good and bad.”
“Doris Daily engages us with the beginnings of her desire to learn to fly airplanes, through sharing her experiences on learning to fly, the grueling hours needed to move up the ladder to private and executive airliners, and new technologies and breakthroughs in the airline industry. The author gives us an inside look into the cockpit, and a step-by-step take about what’s involved to learn how to fly, the importance of protocol, possible things that can go wrong, and going from a novice to a trained commercial/executive pilot.”
“We’ll also learn the difference between ‘autopilot’ and flying using the instrument panel. She also shares some personal stories about some of the beautiful and scenic places she’s flown to or from North America to Germany Italy, and Austria, to name a few, adding tidbits about what pilots do while they wait for the planes or ‘private’ clients for their return flights, and the perks and sightseeing notes in between – things the average person never really thinks about.”
“If you love to fly and are curious to learn about what goes on behind the working scenes of the life of a pilot, you will definitely enjoy these memoirs from Daily, easily explained for those of us who have no concept about what it takes to become a pilot.”

Why Add People Into Your Blog Articles?
.
Don’t Just Write Down Dry Facts
Breathing life into a non-fiction article is tough, especially if it doesn’t include a character. Sometimes called “literary journalism” or the literature of fact, creative non-fiction merges the boundaries between literary art and research nonfiction – statistical, fact-filled, run of the mill journalism.
.
Even in Non-Fiction, You Have to Build a Page-Turner
Non-fiction authors should take a few tips from their sisters and brothers across the aisle. We must build page-turning non-fiction books too. Short attention spans are baked-in. We can blame smartphones, millennials, or the weather, but we’ve got to keep our reader’s attention. An informing tone, usually overused in non-fiction, will turn off readers if used consistently. Breathing life into a non-fiction article is tough, especially if it doesn’t include a character.
.
Creative Nonfiction Should:
Include accurate and well-researched information
Hold the interest of the reader
Potentially blur the realms of fact and fiction in a pleasing, literary style – while remaining strangely grounded in fact
Nonfiction writers often choose to write about topics or people close to them (including themselves). As long as the piece deals with something real, or something based on the real, the writer is allowed to take the piece in any direction he or she wishes.
.
Your (Non-Fiction) Article Needs a Human Face Too
Marketing Guru Jeff Bullas explains why: “Individuals have emerged as a means to put a human face to the soulless and faceless stats of the demographic data scientist. The problem is that just considering a demographic profile misses that human element. So personas were invented to help the new breed of marketer understand the human side of the data.”
.
Newspapers: “If it bleeds it leads”
Thumbing through any newspaper or magazine, you will find people in almost any story: mentioning of names, interviewing a person, citing people…
“Newspapers have understood this at a primal layer for a long time in what news they published on the front page. Editors and journalists have known for a long time that “If it bleeds it leads”. Fear also sells newspapers. Personas have personalities, they have fears, wants, and passions. People in their articles have an age, an assigned gender, and even a college degree.”
.
***It does not matter whether you are a blogger, a brand or social media marketer, or a non-fiction writer of books, you need to make your content more human.***
.
To Develop a Persona Requires Asking Some Questions – Here Are a Few to Get You Started:
What are the biggest problems in their private lives?
What are the challenges in their job?
Where do they get their information from? Blogs, trade magazines, books?
What would stop them changing to your product or service?
How do they convince their boss to make a buying decision?
Do they print off an ebook and put it on his desk?
What media do they consume? YouTube videos, white papers, podcasts?
Knowing the answers to some of these questions will help in creating relevant and appropriate articles – and to add people in your non-fiction writing.
.
Personas and Content Marketing
“Creating a persona is both an art and a science. Contagious and engaging content that touches hearts and minds is your goal as a content marketer. The content not only needs to answer the questions but also be on the media preference of choice.
That may be a video, a blog post and on Slideshare – or maybe all three. If you can put your content creators in the buyers’ shoes then you are well on your way to content marketing success.”

How to Get Your Author Page #1 on Google
According to studies: The No. 1 Position in Google Gets 33% of Search Traffic. Why being on top of Google search rankings is important for you as an author?
Remember what’s critical in buying property: location, location, location … in web terms it means ranking, ranking, ranking. So, if someone is searching for key phrases that are contained in your blog or on your website, they will find you on Google’s top rankings. And as more potential readers find your websites, as more they learn about you as an author and about your books.
.
To boost your website’s ranking it is very important to know and use SEO, which stands for “search engine optimization.”
Basic Search Engine Optimization Knowledge
What you should know to benefit from regarding SEO:
How to Announce Your Book for FREE on Google
Better SEO
Would you like to have your book cover and description seen by millions on the internet? If your answer is YES, then sign up with Google plus – Google+ and use one of the best ways on the whole internet to announce your book for FREE – several times a day!
Once you are signed up with Google+, write a compelling “Profile” and add images of you and your books to it.
Start building circles and adding potential readers of your book into these circles. Unlike Twitter, you can build circles with thousands of followers in a very short time. No 2,000 limit only here…
No need to “hand-pick” these followers, just start out by adding already existing circles to your own. Type in: readers, writers, literary agents, publishers, librarians, book reviewers, bookworms etc. or keywords of your books to find the right circles. Don’t forget your personal interests, sports and hobbies to have a well-mixed community. Select the audience or the parts of your list that will be receiving your message according to your chosen topic of circles.
Create a Google+ Business Account – easy and free again. Google+ allows every business to act as an individual in many forms.
“Like” – the same as with any other social media, comment on postings of others, ask questions, give a “1+” on their postings and “share” them (same as “re-tweet” on Twitter). After some participating days, start your own posts, write short articles about anything your audience might be interested in. After all, it is called “Social Media”…
Add lots of photos and snippets from your blog or website. Post your book trailer – see 111 Tips to Create Your Book Trailer how to do this – and add links to Amazon or other book sales pages.
Place images of your books and a short description along with your author bio – several times a day! Avoid looking spammy, create a variety of text and images, as well as a variety of links to your book’s sales page.
Place your book trailer in separate posts to achieve even more buzz. Write at least five unique descriptions of each of your books, to avoid this “spamming look” on your posts and change the headline as well.
.
Chats on Google Plus
You can use Google Talk to chat with friends, potential customers, and readers. In your sidebar, you have an option to connect with people in through chats. Again: As larger your audience on Google+ is, as more people you added to your circles, as more potential readers you will get and as better the result will be.
Take advantage of Google+, one of the best ways to market books or e-books which authors and publishers yet have to discover. Let me know about your Google+ presence and I will add you into my circles too. Mine is: https://plus.google.com/u/0/108229068198031646389/posts
.
Reasons Why Google+ is Perfect for Writers
Google+, now since over a year in the social media scene, keeps growing and growing. Google+ had ….. members and rising and is now the fastest-growing social media site in history… Though Facebook is currently the industry leader for social media, some think Google Plus could beat Facebook.
.
You might think: “Why engaging in another social media when I am on Twitter and Facebook already? However, for me and many other publishers and authors, Google+ has lots of benefits, and I am just mentioning here the most important:
SEO – Search Engine Optimization:
You can submit each of your blog posts to your Google+ account. Google treats the information on its own platforms, aka Google Search Engine, pretty high, which means your SEO-ranking for your website or blog improves dramatically. Your Google+ profile will always be top ranked on a Google search, so just fill it in and link it to all your other sites.
Google keeps the exact process for measuring the quality and originality of content top secret. Instead, Google asks webmasters and content producers to consider 23 questions to help better produce well-ranked content.
Of those 23 questions: “Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?” best underlines the strategy that has the most potential for content producers.
Google has found a way to measure the appreciation of a site’s fans. Google accomplishes this partially through their +1 button, which can be used by Google search engine users with a Google account, to share with Google a recommendation for a website, page, or content item. It’s essentially the same thing as the Facebook “Like”, but with more clout because it’s directly tied into a site’s Google SEO rank. To “+1” something in the Google search results, you do need a Google account, but it does not need to be a “Google+” account.
.
If you want to step into Google’s mindset, the questions below provide some guidance on how they have been looking at the issue:
•Would you trust the information presented in this article?
•Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
•Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
•Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
•Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
•Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
•Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original analysis?
•Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
•How much is quality control done on content?
•Does the article describe both sides of a story?
•Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
•Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
•Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
•For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
•Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
•Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
•Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
•Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
•Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
•Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
•Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
•Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
•Would users complain when they see pages from this site?
.
Google hopes the questions above give some insight into how they try to write algorithms that distinguish higher-quality sites from lower-quality sites. 75% of internet users will never scroll past the first page of a Google search. Using the tips above will help your site to be on the first page. Best of all: it doesn’t cost you a dime – it’s free advertising by the world’s largest search engine!
.
MORE TIPS:
Always have your own domain name and domain hosting. Free websites, such as Weebly or Wix, for example, will never bring your websites – and your books – to Google’s first page! Free websites that save you less than $10 a month, will cost you actually: in lost readers and lost business.
