My Own Mistakes … on Blogs

.

“Do Not Make Silly Spelling Mistakes” writes a blogger at Honkiad.com. She might have written it for me? Her article and also the following info graphic show how easily one can slip into it. And no, currently not writing in the mother language is not an excuse : )

She advises to be sensitive to spelling mistakes, such as there and their, it’s and its, form and from. The occasional slip is not going to lose you a lot of readers, but making the same mistakes repeatedly is going to annoy people.

Darren Rose, professional blogger, who founded Problogger has lots of tips for authors how to create successful articles for your readers.

http://www.problogger.net/archives/2008/08/12/how-to-craft-a-blog-post-10-crucial-points-to-pause

His advise

Be Useful – if your post isn’t informing, inspiring, entertaining or making someone’s life better – don’t publish it until it does.
Share your Opinion – opinions are often what sets bloggers apart from the pack.
Cut out the Fluff – before you hit publish, revise your post and remove anything that doesn’t add value.
Visualise Your Reader – writing with a reader in mind personalises your writing.
Make Your Posts Scannable – only 16% of people read every word online. Format your posts so that your main points stand out.
Work and Rework You Headlines – a good headline can be the difference between a blog post being read, or ignored.

12 Amazon “Countries” in One Link

.

World

.

With the limited 140 characters on Twitter for example, character space counting is necessary.  To reach your potential worldwide readers, you have to tweet the link for each country separately. For some reason Amazon divides the world by countries and has separate platforms for each country, the wonderful Word-wide-Web seems not to exist for them…

.

Great Amazon Link Shortener

A smart software developer created a program that lets you send out one link, and no matter where your readers are, they come to their own countries’ Amazon website, even though you give the link as viewbook …. It works great. Try it out with our own Amazon sales link. Just sign in with the developers site: http://www.viewbook.at, which is converting into http://www.booklinker.net/

Viewbook provides you with a link, which sends the customer to the Amazon site in your country, via their (viewbooks) site. It is a seamless process, and the customer doesn’t realize that it is happening. This is great for using on Twitter, as it does not matter where your potential customers live, because once they click on your link, they’ll be taken to the most appropriate Amazon store.

.

Track the Progress of Your Link

Another great feature provided by Viewbook.at is the ability to track the progress of your book links.  Each link you post on Social Media gives you an estimate of how many clicks the books are receiving, and the countries they are coming from.  Two more companies currently offer a similar service: SmartURL and Georiot.

.

Pro and Con’s

Yes, the service is free, or at least almost, as Viewbook is an Amazon affiliate and this way they receive a tiny commission from Amazon, for a $2.99 book about 6 cents.  If the customer orders more items within 24 hours through this initial Viewbook link certainly more. However, if you are an Amazon affiliate, you will not receive a commission on the sale of your book – Viewbook.at will receive this small amount for their great service.

.

To Link or Not to Link?

On the other hand: you might even sell more, as more potential reader learn about your book by way of the “translation” of your sales page link. Your royalties will not be affected in any way. This single global link to many countries is really a superb invention, reducing lots of customer barriers, and it might improve your overall sales a little bit. There is some discussion on the Internet about Viewbook’s affiliate programs, on the other hand, if customers order free or 99cent books through referral of BookBub and similar services.  BookBub receives a commission too – on top of the hefty ad fees they charge for sending out a newsletter with advertisers’ book campaign info with a single click. That’s all they do!  I have never heard someone on the net discussing these affiliate commissions.

.

I personally think the “worldwide” link helps book sales more – if you are not already an Amazon affiliate yourself.  And you can certainly use both links, your “old” ones from Amazon for each country and the “worldwide” Viewbook link.

How to Publish With Your Own Imprint

.

by Nicole Eva Fraser

I love my traditional publisher, Second Wind Publishing LLC in North Carolina. Second Wind released my first novel (The Hardest Thing in This World) in October 2013.  So why did I decide to self-publish my second novel and a nonfiction e-Book in 2014?  Simply because I wanted to learn the DIY side of the business, and take charge of getting my books to market at a faster pace.

.

imprint

.

To publish with my own imprint (= publishing business), I followed the basic steps below, which you can adapt for the state / province where you live and the self-publishing service company you work with.

First, the definition of “imprint”

An imprint is a publisher name. Your own imprint is simply the publisher name you choose, clear, and register according to your state business laws to use in self-publishing your own books.

File your imprint name in your state

I live in Ohio, so once I settled on my imprint name—Bench Press—I had to check its availability in Ohio and register it as a trade name. The steps should be similar in your state.

I went to the Ohio Secretary of State website.
Went to Business Services page.
Reviewed their Guide to Business Name Availability.
Did a Business Search by Name and by Exact Name.
Bench Press didn’t come up in the searches, so I filed the Ohio “Trade Name (Name Registration)” form and paid the $50 fee to register the name.
I was granted the Trade Name Registration for Bench Press.
The registration must be renewed every five years.

.

How does your self-publishing company handle author imprints?

Considering to use the POD services and retail arms of Amazon and Smashwords, I researched all their policies. You will need to research the policies of the company you will working with well before you are preparing to publish.  Here’s what I found in my research in February 2014:

Amazon CreateSpace (paperback):

Yes, you may publish with your own imprint, but must buy your own ISBN to do so (more on ISBNs in a minute).

Amazon KDP (Kindle):

Yes, you may publish with your own imprint and are not required to buy your own ISBN.

Smashwords:

Yes, you may publish with your own imprint and are not required to buy your own ISBN. However, if you elect to get the free ISBN from Smashwords, be aware that:

1.     Smashwords will be listed as the publisher in the Bowker Books in Print database; and

2.     Your imprint will be listed as the publisher in your e-Book.

ISBNs: to buy or not to buy?

I did decide to buy an ISBN for the paperback of my novel I Don’t Think It’s That Simple because I want Bench Press (not CreateSpace) to appear as the imprint in the paperback.

I decided not to buy ISBNs for GPS for New Novelists because I’m releasing it only as an e-Book, and I’m satisfied with the Smashwords arrangements regarding their free ISBNs.

To learn more about purchasing ISBNs, visit Bowker Identifier Services.

More opportunities to consider

You could choose and buy the domain name of your imprint and create an additional website for your book(s), with all the corresponding exposure and marketing opportunities.
You could incorporate under your imprint name. Incorporation is a complex legal process and you will need a lawyer.
You could invite other authors to publish under your imprint and build a collective. Consult a lawyer before you do.

.

Conclusion

Publishing with your own imprint requires you to do your due diligence upfront.  Be sure to allow enough time in your pre-production schedule for the research and the decision-making that are involved.

Nicole Eva Fraser is the author of I Don’t Think It’s That Simple, forthcoming in Summer 2014, The Hardest Thing in This World (2013), and GPS for New Novelists: Navigating the 5 routes to publication (2014).

Stephen King Book Signing in Sarasota Florida

Folks were lining up around the blog… What a sight! I was curious and asked one of those in line if

there is free ice cream from the new opened parlor. But no, she explained me that there is a book

signing. Book Signing? Really? Yes, she said, in BookStore 1 …. link there is an author signing

his books. Yes, and what’s his name? Stephen King she said. Well, no wonder!

As I had already a camera in hand, I asked several folks to model for me and took also lots of

photographs from parts of the line up (had no wide angle lens with me).

.

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth

Pillsbury King. He made his first professional short story sale  in 1967 to Startling Mystery

Stories. In the fall of 1973, he began teaching high school English classes at Hampden Academy,

the public high school in Hampden, Maine. I would assume to make ends meet…

If it hadn’t been for Stephen King’s wife, Tabitha, the iconic image of a young girl in a prom dress

covered in pig’s blood would not exist. King received 30 rejections for his story of a tormented girl

with telekinetic powers, and then he threw it in the trash. Tabitha fished it out. King sent his story

around again and, eventually, Carrie was published. The novel became a classic in the horror

genre and has enjoyed film and TV adaptations as well. Sometimes all it takes is a little

encouragement from someone who believes in you.

.

Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on

novels. In the spring of 1973, Doubleday & Co., accepted the novel Carrie for publication, providing

him the means to leave teaching and write full-time. He has since published over 50 books and has

become one of the world’s most successful writers.

.

Word for Your Week:

“Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is hard work. –Stephen King

And by the way: There is a publishing seminar in Sarasota, FL, this coming Saturday, Mar 22.

Sign-up for the Early-Bird-Price and learn how to become a successful writer – maybe one day people line up for your book signings too. And we will show you how to get short stories from your book out to get a name as a writer.

Interview With Susan Hughes: Editor Par Excellence

ebooksinternational:

Fiza Pathan interviewed Editor Susan Hughes, and one of her questions was:  ”What is the editor’s relationship to the writer?. Susan Hughes explained:

“It’s very important for the editor and the writer to become a team in order for the edit to be successful. As an editor, however, I accept the fact that I’m not the captain of the team.  I’m not the one who wrote the words or spent hours enveloped in the creative process.  The editor begins with a secondary role and then works to build that trust with the writer that will eventually level the playing field a bit.”  Read the whole interview here.

Hi Susan, can you describe for us what an “ideal” editor does?

An ideal editor is one who forms a bond and a level of trust with the writer, enabling the writer to have the confidence to hand over his/her precious words—to an absolute stranger!  That trust is built through prompt, friendly communication. Writers have lots of questions about editing, and an ideal editor will be there daily to answer those questions, even before the edit begins.  Then comes the edit itself, and if the bond has been formed, it will be a positive, rewarding, and successful experience for both writer and editor and will hopefully lead to a long working relationship and friendship between the two parties.

 What constitutes a successful edit?
Great question! I feel an edit is a success if the writer is satisfied with the end product. The icing on the cake, however,…

Top Earnings of Genre Books

.

Road-to-Success

.

Hugh Howey wrote a fantastic report about author earnings. He explains: “Sports stars, musicians, actors— their salaries are often discussed. This is less true for authors, and it creates unrealistic expectations for those who pursue writing as a career.  Now with every writer needing to choose between self-publishing and submitting to traditional publishers, the decision gets even more difficult. Online Book Retailers, such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble don’t share their e-book sales figures.”

.

How Bestsellers are “Made”

We wrote several times in our former blogs about book statistics by Nielsen, who are counting only books from bookstore chains, large independent bookstore, mass markets – but not from online retailers, such as Amazon. We also explained how New York Times Bestsellers are “made

“ResultSource, a San Diego-based marketing consultancy, specializes in getting books onto bestseller lists, according to The Wall Street Journal. For clients willing to pay enough, it will even guarantee a No. 1 spot. It does this by taking bulk sales and breaking them up into more organic-looking individual purchases, defeating safeguards that are supposed to make it impossible to “buy” bestseller status.” Read the whole Forbes article by Jeff Bercovici.

.

The 7K Report

Hugh Howey has lots of statistics on his elaborate blog http://authorearnings.com/the-report/

He is friends with an author who has advanced coding skills and who had created a software program that can crawl online bestseller lists and work with fast amounts of data. All of this data is public—it’s online for anyone to see—but until now it has been extremely difficult to gather, aggregate, and organize it.

.

Excerpts of Statistics and Findings on Hugh Howey’s Report:

“The bestseller lists used were Mystery/Thriller, Science Fiction/Fantasy, and Romance. It turns out that 86% of the top 2,500 genre fiction bestsellers in the overall Amazon store are e-books. At the top of the charts, the dominance of e-books is even more extreme. 92% of the Top-100 best-selling books in these genres are e-books! Indie and small-publisher titles dominate the bestselling genres on Amazon. Indie authors are earning nearly half the total author revenue from genre fiction sales on Amazon.”

.

“Self-publishing is not a gold rush. It isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. There are no short cuts, just a lotof effort and a lot of luck. Those who do well often work ludicrous hours in order to publish several books a year. They do this while working day jobs until they no longer need day jobs. This is alsotrue of the writers earning hundreds or even thousands a month. However, authors are claiming tobe making more money now with self-publishing than they made in decades with traditional publishers, often with the same books. Read the whole report on author earnings at Hugh Howey’s blog.”

How Much Do Self-Publishing Authors Earn?

.

Author-Earnings

.

So you think you want to write a book? Ever wondered exactly how much self-published authors earn? According to a new study by Digital Book World, the median income range for self-published authors is under $5,000, and nearly 20% of self-published authors report deriving no income to speak of from their writing.

.

Dana Beth Weinberg wrote a blog about it: “For amateur Argentine dancers, the possibility of making a living out of their tango practice tends to be perceived as a chance to improve their fates. Unlike tango artists, writers may dream of quitting their day jobs, but very few are able to afford to do so, and for many writers, publishing is not even a promising option for supplementing income. In publishing, the diminished role of gatekeepers has meant more opportunity for would-be authors but also more competition to sell books, thereby making it harder for growing numbers of writers to earn their livelihood from their writing.”  Read her blog: Artists and Money.

.

Ms. Weinberg was analyzing the responses from the nearly 5,000 authors who volunteerly responded to a 2013 Digital Book World and Writer’s Digest Author Survey in relation to whether an author is aspiring (not yet published), self-published only, traditionally published only, or hybrid (both self-published and traditionally published). She compared the top priorities of these 4 types of authors, and in Part 2, she examined the differences in their stock of published unpublished manuscripts.

Comparing authors with the same number of manuscripts, there is a strong similarity in income between hybrid and traditional authors, but hybrid authors outperformed their self-published counterparts on earnings. No wonder, as trade-published authors already have a platform and are already a brand!

.

Yes, some authors do break through… 1.8% of self published authors made over $100,000 from their writing last year, compared with 8.8% of traditionally published authors and 13.2% of hybrid authors. The study was conducted online in October and November 2013.

.

Conclusions? Don’t quit your day job yet!  Is your self-publishing:

an amateurish endeavor,
a means of sharing stories,
a strategic move in a writing career,
or an entrepreneurial activity?

Authors who have a greater focus on earning income from their writing, have produced more manuscripts than either their self-published or traditionally published counterparts, and are earning higher incomes on average.

.

Learn everything about the publishing and book marketing process. Focus not only on publishing books, branch out and sell more of your written content, such as short stories or magazine articles.

You have lots of material in your manuscripts you can write about! And write more books – with one or two books you are not really considered an author, from the third book on it becomes much easier and every book promotes the others you have written.
