Celebrity MakeUp Artist: Hiyiyatun MuQaribu
A long-time friend and someone who helped start my modeling career – MakeUp Artist Hiyiyatun MuQaribu – has been a very important source of support in my life, having encouraged me from the very beginning. She is the makeup artist for the cover photos in my book Model Behavior for Chapter Six, which was a beautiful shoot, and she helped bring out the best in me.
She was kind enough to allow me to turn the tables on her – and talk about the key topics I explore in my book. I hope you enjoy her interview and appreciate her talent as I do.

Our Potential:
1. How has facing life’s challenges helped you to realize your potential and talent as a make up artist?
Facing my life’s challenges helped me to realize my own potential and talent to become a Professional Makeup Artist. Viewing everything I have endured in my life with a broad perspective has also allowed me to see that my passion for makeup art was my own special gift. It allowed me to see that I could share and encourage others with my gift as well. Encouraging others with my talent of makeup art is like helping them to remember to have appreciation for their own beauty and the beauty of life.
Our Positive Selves:
2. How has being positive helped you build your success and lasting happiness?

Hiyiyatun MuQaribu, Celebrity MakeUp Artist, Model Behavior.
Seeing my life with a positive outlook has served as a key factor in building my own success and lasting happiness. I have been able to maintain a positive attitude by always being grateful, staying motivated, humble and trying to make the best of each situation. Having a positive perspective in general definitely plays a major roll within the process of you determining your own success and happiness.
For example there will always be negativity, obstacles and distractions in life. However, it is clearly up to the individual to maintain a positive attitude and keep striving towards their own goals and ambitions, regardless of these not so ideal influences. So if you fall down pick yourself back up and keep trying until you actually achieve your goals.
Healthy Relationships
3. What is the most important thing you have learned in life that helps in building healthy relationships?
The most important thing that I’ve learned in my life so far that has helped me to build healthy relationships is this. In order to have healthy relationships with others, you must first make having a healthy relationship with yourself a top priority in your own life. Plus you must constantly work at this…. Then when you start to build healthy relationships with others it is not forced and it flows naturally.
Life’s Challenges
4.What s your attitude at winning over life’s challenges?

Chapter Six, Model Behavior, Makeup by Hiyiyatun MuQaribu.
My attitude towards winning over life’s challenges is that the nature of life is hard. This is a real fact. When you accept this reality the challenges in your life and winning over them, will no longer discourage you from the bigger picture of achieving victor!
Our Personal Power
5. In what aspects of yourself do you feel you really find your personal power?
Having faith within myself always has been and always will be the true aspect in which I find my own personal power.
On Success
6. How do you define success and how has that helped you become successful at what you love doing?
I define success first through the understanding that true happiness is success. The type of happiness that only lies within you! Secondly success is unique for each individual. Third and lastly, I believe that success is truly being unafraid to be your most authentic self.
Healthy Mind & Body
7. What are some daily beauty routines you incorporate in your life that help you to maintain a healthy mind and body?
I practice two specific daily beauty routines that help me in maintaining a healthy mind and body. For the mind it is self love. For the body it is eating well and exercise. I make it a daily practice to have self love for my current state of being, or who I am right now. This creates a strong core of happiness. Therefore I do not only look to having love or happiness for myself when something good happens in life, but in every moment of life.
For my body I try really hard at eating a healthy diet through out my day. I’m a woman on the go so I’m working on it. I also try to remember the importance of incorporating exercise in to my life as a healthy daily activity.

Real Success
This week I’d like to share more thinking about real success, the deep success we can have if we let ourselves rethink what success even means. – Naima Mora

Me – prepping for a Skype interview!
I am almost obsessed with the idea of success, but not in the way some might think. Perhaps it’s because of the current social and economic condition that affects me very deeply.
“In society today, I believe that a large emphasis is put on money, fame and sexuality. We are taught that within this Holy Trinity lies our power and worth. When in reality, our power lies in who we are as individuals- our actions, our intelligence, our imagination, our creativity, our compassion, and our drive. When I began nurturing these aspects of myself, I realized that I was empowering my own individual beauty and the gift I have to give the world- the reason I live.” (Naima Mora: Model Behavior)
When I began nurturing these aspects of myself, I realized that I was redefining what success means to me. Money, fame, and sexuality became less important when I looked at what other things I could offer humanity. I have talent, everyone does. What a beautiful notion that within your natural talents you have the ability to inspire and allow even one other life to breathe easier because you have lived.
When we allow ourselves to become ‘successful’ on our own terms we take away the limitations of what that means and allow ourselves to become happy, in every possible way imaginable. We can find success in planting a garden, having a healthy child, improving social conditions, dropping judgment, appreciating all aspects of beauty and in helping other people.
What are the unsuspecting ways you define success?

On Gratitude
This week’s expert at Naima Mora Online: Dr. Glen Hepker on gratitude. Gratitude is the basis of every joyful moment and every part of achieving our dreams. To be grateful is to be alive!

Dr. Glen Hepker performing the kung fu staff routine.
Glen Hepker has doctorate degrees in psychology and health/wellness arts, and he is a part-time individual and marital counselor, a wellness coach, and a master instructor of tai chi chuan, chi kung, kung fu, and associated health/wellness arts (which are intrinsically inclusive of the empathetic and benevolent health and wellness philosophy found in his writing) at his wellness center/school in Mason City, Iowa. Find his book A Glimpse of Heaven: The Philosophies of True Health on Amazon.
______________________________________________________
Dr. Glen, it seems that, in my life when I feel the greatest sense of gratitude, it is when I feel the best about life and living. It seems that, while feeling the wonderful outcome of this insight, that I realize what it is that you coin as True Health. What do you think?
You state it QUITE well. It is taking a deep and abiding ownership of a WAY OF LIFE in which one gathers a True Appreciation of the miracle of each moment…more and more each moment – AND knowing that among the greatest gifts of all is that there is always room for improvement – vs. getting stuck on healthful plateaus. It is taking True Responsibility for one’s own health and well being.
This deep and abiding sense of gratitude greatly enhances the quality of our lives, and is a significant aspect of a path toward raising ourselves up…by taking True Responsibility for our own health and wellbeing. It is an important tenet of the Bright School theory, assisting one in realizing True Health (as set forth in my new book). This health and wellness outlook is distinguished by its remarkable, thought-provoking, and ingenious notion of coalescing ethics and morality and deeply rooted insight/objectivity skills with conceptions of health and wellness, i.e., True Health and/or True Health through True Responsibility.
It sets forth that one cannot realize True Health without the necessary and truly skilled attributes of True Appreciation and True Honesty, promoting of True Happiness and True Freedom…but most importantly, nothing to hide behind. It is deep insight, morality, clear objectivity – learning the True Skill of being able to look within and without (into one’s internal and external environments), without fear, without preset patterns of thinking, and WITH the healthful spirit of True Forgiveness.
Deep gratitude/a sense of True Appreciation is congruent with gathering a level of objective insight that introduces one to the notion, once again, of not needing anything to hide behind. Such healthful clarity is a significant aspect of what can be described as ‘glimpses of heaven.’ “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” This healthful way of being cannot be realized without deep gratitude…without gathering a true appreciation of the miracle of the moment. It is consistent with living each day inspired anew.
Below is an ages-old analogy which address this point quite succinctly and eloquently:
Lotus Flower Blossoms Analogy (as set forth in Chapter XV of my new book):
There is a place where, wherever you are there, whatever you are doing…no matter what, in any given moment, there should be nowhere you would rather be. It is where you are right now – and you have the ability to so deeply and artfully appreciate your life and its living…to connect one healthful insight to the next, and make them all one…learning to witness this already-existing truth.
In the wilderness of our existence…a place of budding flowers about, about to unwrap in a showing of perfect appreciation for all to thrive upon, we are the flowers which can blossom again and again in each season of our deeper and deeper insights…all connected…each better and more healthful than before.
It is not unlike Heaven…and it can become Heaven, with enough insight and appreciation. It takes quite a few sparks, glimpses – spine-tingling moments…as a way-of-life which becomes more and more purposeful…more and more without time or space or distance. More and more there is less and less to hide behind.
I want to know, what are you grateful for?

Naima Patti: Naima Mora’s Fan of the Week

Naima Patti from Sicily
This young woman, all the way from Palermo in Sicily has the courage to stand up for herself and has learned a hard lesson in standing up to a bully and not allowing others to influence how she feels about herself. Good for you, Naima! Thanks so much for sharing your story…and how awesome we have the same name!
-Naima Mora
__________________________________________________
My name is Naima. I’m Italian, and I come from Palermo in Sicily. My father is a double bassist. I am 18 years old. Five years ago I started the first year of high school of languages.
In July I made my final exam of high school language and I graduated with 75/100. In middle school all my friends and teachers loved me and appreciated me for my sensitive nature and I was very good at that school! Yet, when I started the first year of high school, my life changed. All the positive things became completely negative. The teachers did not know how to talk to me because, if the previous school my sensitivity was much appreciated, on the contrary in this new school sensitivity was a synonym for “weakness”.
Besides at the first year there was a girl. Apparently she was so sweet, but in reality I was always hated by her and still have never been able to understand why all this hatred towards me. She insulted me, when we were both with other students and during my questions. She made me feel like an ant and I felt bad for what I said, making me ridiculous in the eyes of the other girls and boys of my class. All this happened every day for an entire year.
My parents wanted to talk to the headmaster, and I always prevented it. I did not realize that I had become a victim of bullying and I was sick. Every day I came home with tears in my eyes and the only thing that made me feel better was the music of Tokio Hotel, the only ones who have always managed to give me a moment of happiness. I have suffered for a whole year.
I wanted to change my class but then decided to resist, I wanted to continue my study program with those teachers and those comrades! The first year was over: I went on to my second year with excellent grades, and yet she, the girl, had to repeat the first year.
This bad experience has made me more mature. Before, I hadn’t the courage to respond to an insult, instead with her I could become stronger and more determined. Maybe I should thank her, because throughout this year she has made me grow, made me more independent, but maybe I don’t have to thank her. This hatred and this jealousy she felt towards me, I never understood why these horrible feelings towards me.
I’m only 18 years and sometimes adults tell me they are still very young and have little experience and it is true, but I do not wish it on anyone, an experience like this even though it made me stronger and more sure of myself!
I hope that my story will help many people who like me have been victims of this kind of psychological bullying. I hope that they can find the path to happiness, security and self-confidence! I would like to make it clear that we have to be, anyway, and we should not change ourselves for anyone or anything. We have to accept ourselves as we are!
This bully of a girl thought only the clothes and brand shoes, but this is not the important part of a person: the most important thing is our heart, our soul and our spirit. We must always try to improve our inner qualities and we must remember that we are worth no less than a person who does not have the bag by Dolce & Gabbana. On the contrary, we can be much more than that person!
The better way of our life is “be yourself and don’t change for anyone”!

Some Rules To Live By
Here we are just a week before the release of my book, Model Behavior, and I am reminded by the few rules I try to live by.-Naima Mora

In front of a beautiful water fall in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Like everyone, I go through the ups and downs of daily life. It is in these small day-to-day challenges that we truly win in life. Making the bed and washing the dishes is an unpleasant task for me, but when I come home and see my bed made and the dishes washed it makes everything else feel as if it is in order. My house feels welcoming. I can be productive in an orderly, welcoming environment.
Besides my “keep your house clean” rule, I follow several other mantras to help remind me of what is important. Some of them include: “Everything that makes me happy requires great effort.”
“Do something every day that will make you feel more accomplished than the previous day.” “Find something new and interesting to think about every day. Never stop learning and broadening your horizons.” “Do something every day that will make you feel happy.” (Naima Mora: Model Behavior)
In short, these mantras translate to me, “Challenge each day as if it were your last!” Do not be afraid to live. Sign up for those trapeze classes you’ve wanted to take. Set some time apart to visit the local botanical gardens, or the Zoo -stop to smell the roses. Challenge your two-mile morning jog by attempting to do three miles. Follow your dreams. Don’t be afraid to live. If we fall we can pick ourselves back up.
Living fully does not mean being prepared to die at any time. It simply means being cognizant that in the fragility of life, death can be untimely or timely, but it WILL happen. If we live to our fullest we can be assured of having no regrets because we put forth our best effort.
What are your most important rules to live by?
