Alex Hughes was born in Savannah, GA and moved to the south Atlanta area when she was eight years old. Shortly thereafter, her grandfather handed her a copy of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonrider series, and a lifelong obsession with scifi was born.

Alex is a graduate of the prestigious Odyssey Writing Workshop and a Semi-Finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Her short pieces are published in several markets including EveryDay Fiction, Thunder on the Battlefield and White Cat Magazine.

Alex’s work is smart, dark, adventurous, and a little funny, with a emphasis on great characters and interesting worlds. She gets her inspiration from history (she majored with a European history focus in college), family members, and headlines, as w

It will break your heart a hundred times, show you mountains and valleys and the glories of other worlds before dropping you back down to earth, different than you began. It is a hard path, and one I would tell you to turn back from if you can. But if you can't be turned back, write, write a lot, and write from your heart. Then join a critique group and learn to bear fair criticism of your work--a lot of criticism. You'll learn what parts of your heart translated on the page and which didn't, you'll learn your own strengths and weaknesses, and you'll hone your internal editor through analyzing other peoples' works in progress. Expect it to be a long, hard road, and use the moments of heartbreak along the way to fuel your drive. Hold to the moments of joy and the reasons you set out. And lastly, and most importantly, I'll paraphrase Apex Magazine's guidelines from awhile ago: "If you get rejected, don't get angry [Alex adds: or stay depressed], become more awesome. Become so awesome that we can't help but publish you." Because the struggle--and the journey--is well worth it, for its own sake if not for the destination.(less)

More books by Alex Hughes…

So it turns out that chasing after a newborn and recovering from a 40+ hour labor is kind of intense, and takes a lot of time–specifically, offline time. :) Pip is almost six weeks old now, though, and I’m feeling better and starting to get a vague clue of how this kid thing works. I totally get why maternity leaves are six weeks minimum though! It’s definitely that long before you can even think...

Definitely not for those who haven't read the rest of the series, and light on adventure and action. But it was a truly beautiful ending to a series and world that I loved, and I enjoyed every minute of reading.

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
John Lennon
