Book tour: Mist of Midnight by Sandra Byrd. An excellent tale of loss, betrayal and trusting as one woman tries to claim back her identity and heritage.

SynopsisIn the first of a brand-new series set in Victorian England, a young woman returns home from India after the death of her family to discover her identity and inheritance are challenged by the man who holds her future in his hands.
Rebecca Ravenshaw, daughter of missionaries, spent most of her life in India. Following the death of her family in the Indian Mutiny, Rebecca returns to claim her family estate in Hampshire, England. Upon her return, people are surprised to see her...and highly suspicious. Less than a year earlier, an imposter had arrived with an Indian servant and assumed not only Rebecca's name, but her home and incomes.
That pretender died within months of her arrival; the servant fled to London as the young woman was hastily buried at midnight. The locals believe that perhaps she, Rebecca, is the real imposter. Her home and her father's investments reverted to a distant relative, the darkly charming Captain Luke Whitfield, who quickly took over. Against her best intentions, Rebecca begins to fall in love with Luke, but she is forced to question his motives—does he love her or does he just want Headbourne House? If Luke is simply after the property, as everyone suspects, will she suffer a similar fate as the first “Rebecca”?
A captivating Gothic love story set against a backdrop of intrigue and danger, Mist of Midnight will leave you breathless.

5 STAR REVIEW

I received the book from the publisher for an honest review.

An excellent tale of loss, betrayal and trusting as one woman tries to claim back her identity and heritage.
Rebecca Ravenshaw had an horrific experience in India and had lost her parents during the Rebellion. When she finally stepped foot on English soil she thought that everything was good. But, once she arrived at Headbourne, her family estate, she realized that it would not be the case.
Not only was there an imposter, that stole her identity but also a suicide and a lot of mystery surrounding the Indian maid that disappeared. Every where she turned she walked into ill mannered people that mistrusted her and ostracized her, but this woman had some backbone that the aristocrats and servants had to recognize. They tested her on a few occasion but at the end Capt Whitfield came to her rescue. But with that the mystery to her imposter deepened. Who was she? Where was her maid? Was she murdered or did she in fact commit suicide?
With so many people around her, each with there own agenda, it was hard to find the truth, and yes the truth was shocking. Betrayal from so called friends had off balance her a few times but only her faith and a guardian angel kept her on track.
I must admit I loved the captain's character, wrapped in so many secrets of his own, his role couldn't be underestimated. He rose with each challenge posed to him, a real gentleman that saw past Rebecca's outward attire, the woman she really was. Enjoying her love for India, her beautiful stories and making way for her shortcomings. I loved the manner the author brought in the rich culture of India with the English culture, making it unique and beautiful.
It is a moving story, written with the greatest of love. The characters were believable, each strong in their own right, supporting Rebecca's character, making the story very interesting.
Ms.Byrd knows her audience and how to keep their attention throughout this Gothic love story that takes you back to the Rebellion of India in 1857 to the very English country side where you are judged by what you have and your name instead of the person you are.

Where, oh WHERE is the French kissing!!!

5 Star Review

I received the book from the publisher for an honest review.

This was the ideal book to read on Valentine's day. A quick read that will make you believe in love, romance, a handsome hunk and truth, once again.
The story was written from Valinteen's point of view getting to know more about this feisty independent woman, that wants to be on her own but yet loves her family, dearly. Missing them, always taking them in account, not ashamed of her heritage. Her character was someone I can identify with, warm loving and very real.
With her mind made up, at the age of eighteen, she embarked in adventure away from the loving and protective arms of her parents. Leaving the Island of Mauritius to live in Perth, Australia. She adapted well in her new life but love always seemed to miss her. But when the hunk, in the form of American businessman, Joshua appeared, she knew she was in trouble of loosing her heart.
With the impending sale of the Animal hospital, where she worked as vet, in jeopardy she had a lot of things to learn about people, greed and standing for what you believe in. Trusting the man even if he kept many secrets from her. A beautiful relationship blossomed among them and love was definitely in the air the moment they had met. I was jealous of the air-balloon scene, my word that sound so romantic. sigh. ;)
The cast of supporting characters fit well within the story, supporting Valentine as we learn more about her. I love Martin, the cat. His character's role enhanced her love for all animals, showing us what a beautiful person she is and that she really live her moto.
A great story with much to offer.

Dammit to hell. I can’t even enjoy a movie.
The nighttime air bit at my skin as thoughts of him chomped at my brain. He’d polluted me like a poison that spread throughout my mind and body, seizing every thought, leaving no rest. I loved horror movies and yet I couldn’t recall a single scene. Jimmie kept glancing at me, concern etching his face all the way through the ninety-minute show.
Soon Jimmie and I walked out of the theater, my hand resting in the crook of his elbow. Bitterness raged inside, heating my face against the breeze when I saw the limo roll toward us. He found me like he always said he would, but three fucking hours late.
I knew I wasn’t Dorian’s top priority, and I’d made some progress at keeping my jealousy under control, but no woman wanted to be shoved to the side every time it was convenient for a man. I tightened my grip on Jimmie’s sleeve and pulled him along just as the driver stepped into our path. I gave the chauffeur a shotgun-glare as he motioned me to the car. “Miss Torrance, Mr. Lincoln is waiting.”
My heart skipped ten beats, I couldn’t tear my eyes away when the dark window lowered and Dorian tousled his ebony hair with his fingers. He wasn’t in his usual attire, a business suit. Tonight he presented himself in casual wear. His sharp, handsome features were expressionless.
I closed my eyes, digging deep for the strength to tell him to get lost for standing me up, but I knew the words would never make it past my lips. I was a fool to entertain the thought. One look from those black eyes sifted me like wheat. Dorian practically owned me. That man was my tempter and my savior wrapped into one.
I met him at the lowest point of my life, after my mother died of cancer. The three jobs I was working to keep my head above water and pay off her medical bills were about to do me in physically. While I was waiting tables at the country club, Dorian swooped in from out of nowhere and rescued me like an injured bird. His amazing sixth sense alerted him that life was too much for me, and he offered me a strong shoulder to cry on. The floodgates opened and I unloaded my personal problems. Dorian Lincoln promised those problems would disappear with a simple acceptance of his proposition: give him power over my body, something Bianca wouldn’t allow.
Lifting my palm to Jimmie’s cheek, I smiled. “Thanks for the movie. I’ll call you next week.”
“He’s a prick. You deserve better, Abby!” Jimmie yelled, as I eased myself inside the limo.
Dorian opened a small refrigerator under the seat, his hands cupping the base of a champagne glass. “You’ve wasted no time finding another way of entertaining yourself this evening.”
“You wasted no time in standing me up,” I scoffed.
When I left his office that afternoon, Dorian said he wanted me for some ‘quality time.’ Eight-thirty rolled around before I realized he was a no-show. The food got cold and eventually the long stemmed candles I lit for dinner burned out, along with my patience.“Meetings...clients,” he said.
Top secret meetings and clients were always the excuse. The coldness in his voice was a sword to my heart, a reminder of my temporary ranking in his life. I held on tight to his promise of our relationship becoming more when the time was right.
His stony expression broke into a devious grin. “You look beautiful in that dress and your enthusiasm is charming. But watching you masturbate will reimburse me, Miss Torrance.”
My stomach dropped and quivered as I pressed my thighs together. He was going to punish me.
I tugged at the straps of the red shoes he’d bought me, eyeing him as he sipped from the flute and moved his gaze toward the window. Overtaken by the need to be the object of his fascination, I almost begged him to turn those onyx eyes back on me. His attention was the only thing that kept me from going under.
“Dorian, please I-”
My words were cut off with the sharp turn of his head. Relief came in a warm caress, but suspicion moved in with a lift of his brow. The small amount of light coming through the tinted windows deepened the masculine angles of his face, lending them a sternness that echoed in his voice.
“No other men. I thought I was quite clear about that when we discussed the terms of our agreement, three months ago.”
“Jimmie is just a friend.”
“Jimmie is a man. A distraction.”
“A distraction from being pissed. I don’t like being stood up.”
I sounded so offended, but I had no right. Closing my eyes I regrouped, reminding myself that I freely agreed to make myself available to him. Dorian kept up his end of the arrangement. He took care of me, changed my life for the better. My phone stopped ringing from creditors, he gave me a great job at his company, and I had food on the table in a fabulous apartment. He seemed to know my every need before I voiced them. I could push aside my hostility and take his punishment and occasional negligence.
“You are mine, all mine.” he announced.
His words, saturated with power and ownership, sustained my hungry heart. I could hold out as long as it took, accepting the way things had to be until Bianca was more emotionally stable, and Dorian could ask her for a divorce. I had waited longer on losers, lazy assholes who wouldn’t work in a pie factory. This time I had struck gold.
Reaching over, I grabbed the seat when Dorian impatiently knocked on the divider and the limo picked up speed.

Interview with Tamzen Schultz, author of The Frailty of Things.

The Frailty of ThingsBy Tamsen SchultzGenre: Romantic Suspense
 [image error]
Book Blurb:
Independence.Kit Forrester is a woman who wears her independence like armor. Despite keeping secrets and hiding her past, she’s built a life she loves and is accountable to no one. Until, that is, one of the world’s most wanted war criminals sets his sights on her and she must weigh the risk to one against the chance of justice and closure for many—a decision Kit couldn't make on her own even if she wanted to.
Certainty. As a man who makes his living in the shadows of governments and wars, certainty isn’t a part of Garret Cantona’s vocabulary, and he’s just fine with that. But when Kit walks into his life, he realizes he’s never before been so sure about anything or anyone. Suddenly, he finds he’s looking at the world, his world, in a different light. And now that he is, he’s determined to protect it, and her, in whatever ways he can.
Frailty. No one knows better than Kit and Garret that an appreciation for what is, or what was, or what might be, can be born from the uncertainty and fragility of life. But when a hunt for a killer leaves Garret no choice but to throw Kit back into her broken and damaged past, even his unshakable faith in what they have together might not be enough to keep it from shattering into a million pieces.

Author’s Interview Questions

1.         Where did the idea come from for the book?
I love exploring the grey – there is a lot of grey in “The Frailty of Things” in terms of decisions people make, who they trust, and why they do certain things.
2.         What genre does your book fall under? Romantic Suspense
3.         What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Not so much a synopsis, but the over-arching theme of “The Frailty of Things” is forgiveness, of each other and ourselves.
4.         Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?Published by Booktrope
5.         How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?Longer than I would have liked…probably close to eight months. It’s that pesky middle that slows me down.
6.         Who or What inspired you to write this book?I’m always inspired by all the strong girlfriends I have in my life – they are fun, interesting, and wise, and all the ladies of Windsor are my homage to them.
7.         What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? It takes the small town of Windsor to the international arena with settings as diverse as London, Rome, and rural Vermont.
8.         In general do you like to talk about you writing and published books or are you very close-lip about it? If no why?I do like to talk about it in the right context. I’m not going to bring it up at a business meeting, but if you ask me about it, I love talking about it – mostly because it’s so fun.
9.         What book/s are you currently writing and what is it about?I’m writing the next Windsor Series book called “An Inarticulate Sea” which is Drew and Carly’s story. She’s a small town policewoman and Drew, well, Drew is a lot of things.
10.      What is the writing process like for you?I’m not big on giving myself reasons to feel guilty (I think we women do that enough already) so I don’t actually have a process because if I did and I didn’t stick to it, I’d feel bad. So really, I write when I can and try to have a lot of fun doing it. So far so good.
11.      How did/do you teach yourself to write?By writing and reading and listening….learning to write is a long process and I’m still learning. I plan to be learning until I can’t write anymore.
12.      What aspect of the craft do you think is the most difficult to learn? For me, because I write mysteries, I’m still playing with the best ways to keep track of all the small, but important details.

13.      What is the best and/ or worst part of being a writer? The best part about writing is getting to live in another world for a period of time. And then I get to come back to my own – it’s the best of all worlds!
14.      Any advice for struggling writers?I suck at advice. I really do. I just think that if someone wants to write, they should just do write. And keep writing.
15.      What is your favorite genre to read or write?I like so many genres – not a big fan of sci-fi, fantasy, or horror, but other than that, I pretty much read everything.
16.      Favorite author?Depends on the day and my mood.
17.      Do you have a favorite spot to read and write? Anytime, anywhere
18.      What did you do before you became a writer?I was and still am a lawyer by training.
19.      What do you like to do when not writing? Share a photoI send a picture of my kids, but they are too busy wreaking havoc on the house to stand still long enough for a photo.
20.      Do you have a bucket/ to-do list and would you share at least two things on it?I want to go to Argentina, Buenos Aires is definitely on my bucket list. So is the Son Doong cave in Vietnam….as you can tell, I love to travel J21.      This or that questions: 22.      Coffee or Tea - Coffee23.      Sweet or savory – Savory24.      Home make meal or takeouts – homemade 25.      Winter or summer – SUMMER26.      Night-owl or Early-Bird – early bird (much to my husband’s dismay)27.      Telephone or visits – visits (I hate the phone. I really do)28.      Which social network do you prefer? – hmmm, loaded question. FB seems to be the most effective in keeping in touch with people (friends, family, and readers)29.      Blogger or website? Honestly, I suck at both (much to my marketing manager’s dismay)30.      What does your family say about your career? Supportive or Clueless – totally behind it 100%
31.      And FinallyMoto/wisdom in life you live by.  We’re only here once…if I have a dream, I go for it because no one else is going to do it for me and at the end of the day, I don’t want to regret things I didn’t do.

Lonely darkness fell around Jack as he slipped into his harness and put on his climbing shoes. He crept in and out of the moon’s shadows to the base of the alp and took hold of the strong plant, the itchy touch of it not a problem, the strength of it boosting his confidence. Fueled by the fire burning in his heart to find Gwenie, he stepped on the first node and glanced back. Just one quick look. He didn’t know why. Maybe something in his psyche wanted to see the ground from whence he’d come one last time in case he never set foot on it again.
He climbed up the next nodule and the next as fast as his feet and arms would take him. A sense of leaving the everyday world overwhelmed him as it always did when he climbed, but this time it wasn’t freeing. An eerie sensation sent shivers through his bones with every foot he scaled. The breaking of twigs, crunching of leaves, and howling noises below grew fainter and fainter as he ascended higher and higher.
“Whooo-whoo.” Halfway up he met an owl that turned its head in a circle as it sat on the highest limb of a towering oak. He pulled upward while pushing with his lower body as he passed boulders and scraggly bushes lit by the stars and moon. He searched with his right hand for the next node, found it, moved up and placed his foot on the spot where it had been. The jagged surface on this mountain could rip open a person in an instant, but it was Jack’s fear for Gwenie that gripped him. The yearning to hold her safe in his arms seeped deeper into his pores each time he forged upward.
His body ached as he pulled with nerves wound as tight as a corkscrew for wanting to hurry to the top. Soon his leg muscles cramped. A gray piece of granite jutting out like the seat of a chair with a slab for a back tempted him. How could he rest after what he’d done to Gwenie? He had to keep moving, but what if his arms and legs gave out, and he never reached her? His head throbbed with decision making.
Just for a second he let go of the living pole. His foot slipped, and he slid down the precipice, debris rolling, crashing beneath him until the belay caught the rope and stopped his fall. His head swam as he thrust the spring-loaded camming device into a crack and anchored the cable. He swung to his right and sank to the rocky seat. The stones settled below him and silence filled the darkness where he sat tucked out of the light from Heaven.
Two days ago he was a slap-happy player in love with Gwenie since childhood, but content to drink life’s single pleasures a while longer. Now the need to take hold of a more profound passion that seemed as fragile as one of Dad’s orchids burned in his soul. The breeze whipping around him blew away images of fast rides through Fairwilde with a blond or a brunette laughing beside him. He needed Gwenie. Please Lord, let her be alright waiting for me.
He stretched out his legs then rubbed his palms together. Upward.
He swung out, grabbed hold of the beanstalk, pulled up with his hand and pushed with his foot as a blast of strong wind swayed the sturdy stem. The stars grew dim then disappeared as clouds rolled over them. Raindrops hit his head while lightning flashed, lighting up the sky—nothing but dark space as far as he could see. Then the flash.
He pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot—pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot again and again through the black void cut by occasional lightning. The tiny glow from the lamp on his helmet did little good in this storm. Another burst of air whipped around him, and the plant quivered. He touched a flat spot. The one Fernando told him to look for? He moved his fingers around it.
Yes. Relief as strong as the gust that bent the trees swept over him. The top. He wanted to shout I’m here Gwenie! into the stormy night over and over, but instead he leaned forward trying to see a way into the cabin.
CHARACTER BIOSJack Greenthumb’s a great guy. He’s young and comes from a well-to-do family, so he’s been having fun riding girls around in his new car. Praise for When Camels Fly (Parched Series Book I):"Page-turning international suspense--this writer is on her way up."-DiAnn Mills, Christie Award winning author "An exciting novel of suspense, intrigue, and mystery. Very nicely done."-Paul Johnson, Readers' Favorites  "It's obvious from the writing that the author has spent time here."-Ellis Shuman, Times of Israel "The book was fantastic, and nearly impossible to set down. Highly recommended."-Kathryn Bennett, Readers' Favorites  "A unique, totally out in left field, never been told story. I love that."-Every Free Chance Blog
Advance Praise for My Brothers Keepers:"The Brothers' Keepers, book 2 in the Parched series, delivers masterful international suspense driven by contemporary family dynamics. Light the late-night oil because you won't want to put this book down."-DiAnn Mills, Christy Award Winner

"I thought Horton peaked with her first novel, When Camels Fly. I'll admit, I was wrong. The Brothers' Keepers is magnificent! The main characters from her first novel are beautifully developed in this sequel. This is a more accessible novel than When Camels Fly mainly because of the location -- Europe. She incorporates the history of the places her characters visit, and she weaves an incredibly feasible story around these events. The story is as complex as When Camels Fly, a good thing that requires close reading, but it is well worth the effort. I highly recommend reading When Camels Fly before this one and continuing journeying with the Madison family!-Leigh Bennett, Reader

"I am once again became enthralled by the exploits of an intelligent, older woman and her family whom I first got to meet in When Camels Fly. It's so rare to find a heroine that the more mature amongst us can relate to on some level. I look forward to learning more about Grace, Mark, Maggie, Jeff and Becca as they become embroiled in yet another adventure after Maggie goes missing and an attempt is apparently made on Becca's life whilst she and Jeff are honeymooning in Switzerland."-Anne Rogers, Reader

CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE

Ein Gedi, Israel
(Archaeologist Grace Madison and her family are in Israel, having followed the relic there from Venice. They’re ascending the wadi of Ein Gedi, which Grace has done many times in her work in the region.)
Grace Ein Gedi, the oasis in Israel where David hid from King Saul, contained two powerful springs, nahals David and Arugot                                                        Ein Gedi, Israel Two other springs, the Shulamit and Ein Gedi, also irrigated the wadi reserve in which we hiked. For a spot in the middle of a desert, it was watery.
When the State of Israel dedicated this verdant park, they documented every square inch with the detail of a Pharisee. But we thought they might have missed something. Temperatures were bearable thirteen hundred feet below sea level on this early spring day. We climbed a mile to David Falls, hopped boulder-to-boulder, tight-roped fallen timber, and passed few tourists. Most visitors were in Jerusalem enjoying the pageant of Ash Wednesday in the Holy City. We left Dr. Steele in a MOSES reunion at the Hallelujah Hotel, with Drs. Merritt and Flately. They compared slips of paper handwritten in Hebrew, which they said they would explain tonight. Steven was still critical in Germany, and I prayed for him during the last hundred yards of the climb. The five-hundred-foot waterfall splashed into a basketball- court-sized rock bowl where swimmers normally recovered from summer heat exceeding one hundred degrees Fahrenheit.  “Author NLB Horton and her husband at the base of the Ein Gedi waterfall.”Plants dangled from dark slashes around the falls, in spots where slivers of rock had detached to create voids perfect for soil pockets. We enjoyed the spectacle alone, in shade from an olive tree arcing from a crevice high above. Rosemary and fennel, my favorite wild herbs, found similar footholds. I admired the buds
“From Ein Gedi, the Dead Sea."

“What are we looking for?” Matthew asked. Before we left Jerusalem, where we spent the night, he had announced Cyril searched furiously in Timna, harassed by representatives of the Israeli Antiquities Authority and Mekorot, Israel’s National Water Company.
Maggie forcefully stated they deserved each other. She assured us he wouldn’t find much water there because the scroll indicated the spring lay several miles northeast. I believed MBM Hydrology would pursue this resource, and was concerned that she would stay in the Middle East—in danger.
I also believed Matthew had abandoned Mossad to pursue my daughter. Cliff obviously maintained courteous attention to ensure he was not forgotten. His lace-trimmed handkerchief never left her pocket.

4 Star Book ReviewI received the book from the touring host for an honest review. I must admit that I struggled with this book. There were times that I wanted to just close the book and leave it; just to pick up again, continuing with the read. The author’s writing style is difficult to get used to. I cannot remember that I struggled so much with When Camels fly, the first book in the series. But with this one I had a hard time. So I am writing this review with mixed feelings.
On the one hand, at times, I have no idea how things had happened or how we got to a certain place in the book. Why certain things happened? There were these gaps within the story that left me confused and the quirky comments of Grace did not help matters–personally, it didn’t make sense why she would think or even say something that actually has nothing to do with the scene at the time. That threw me from time to time, as well. Maybe if it was written differently it would have been more acceptable.  On the other hand the whole set up, as the story unfolds, kept me reading. The way the author added the biblical history with modern day was intriguing. Their journey taking them all over Europe in search for the scrolls; with all the subtle hints that was left by Luther, King Solomon and the Vatican. Most of the “old” characters were back which added a good dimension in the plot. With Grace at the head of everything as she tries to protect her young from impending danger. At times there were more questions than answers and you wonder if the group would ever get to the bottom of the mystery. Lives were in danger, they were kidnapped, shot at, escaped from tricky situations all while searching for the elusive waters of King Solomon. At the end it was a good story, action packed and adventurous with a beautiful romance that blossomed in the midst of all the danger.

Please be aware that When Camels Fly will be 99 cents from February 10 - 21. There's also a big campaign on Goodreads during this time, as well as on BookMovement, JustKindleBooks, the Fussy Librarian, BookGorilla, and a few other sites.

EXCERPT

It was one of those days.
The traffic was impossible and the weather miserable, all grey skies and a drizzle that reflected Georgia’s mood. The afternoon’s meeting had gone on way too long; the clients wanted to change the floor plan again, she’d have to re-do all the drawings, completely re-work the kitchen, and the Project Manager had brought the deadline forward a week.  But right now Georgia didn’t want to think about all that.  All she wanted was to get home, and find a few minutes to have a glass of wine, and put on some music.  Mozart, she thought, would be nice.
The endless line of red tail lights gradually broke up and the roads cleared as she finally made her way out of the city, and deep into the suburbs of London.  The train would have been so much quicker. Some days, having a designated parking space at the office didn’t seem worth it.  But a little while later, Georgia smiled and her body began to relax as she pulled into her driveway and switched off the engine.  Leaning back against the headrest, she took a moment, breathing and deep. She let her mind wander, taking her away from meeting rooms and peak hour gridlock, down a different path.  Her thoughts led her back to the art exhibition she’d snuck out to see during yesterday’s stolen lunch break and she smiled as she revisited that precious half hour of luminous colour and subtle shadows in the small gallery next to the wine bar.  And that took her to thoughts of her old easel, tucked away in the attic, collecting dust.  It had been so long since she’d painted anything except her fingernails...
Georgiastared down at her perfectly manicured hands and remembered when they used to wear smudges of oils and inks.  Back in the days when her auburn hair was long, and her skirts were short.  Now it was the other way round.  Though her sapphire eyes still held the fire they had always had.
“Mum!”
Georgia’s thoughts scattered, and she looked up quickly. The front door was open and Sophie stood on the top step with her panic face on, twisting her dark curls with one hand, laptop clutched to her chest with the other.  “Mum, help! I need you!”
Georgia sighed and climbed out of the car, bracing herself for whatever new drama had befallen her teenage daughter.
“What’s up, sweetheart?”  She kissed Sophie’s forehead before hanging up her coat and dropping her bag onto the hall stand.  “Something happen at school?”
“You were alive before the internet, right?”
Georgiabit back a smile.  “It wasn’t that long ago, Soph.”  Although, Georgia knew that, at forty-three, she probably seemed almost elderly to her seventeen-year-old daughter.  “Why?  What’s happ…”
“You’re not going to believe what my English teacher, Mr Gormsby, has done,” Sophie interrupted, then paused, taking a deep breath before announcing, “He’s set us an assignment and we’re not allowed to use or refer to the internet or social media, at all.  In any capacity.  Apparently, according to him, my generation is too dependent on search engines and social networking, can you believe it?”
Actually, Georgia could believe it.  Sophie’s head was almost permanently bent over her phone or laptop and it was the same with her brothers, Alec and Max. Though this afternoon it sounded like the fifteen-year-old twins had their video games fired up; the faint sounds of a zombie apocalypse floated down from upstairs. But Georgia kept her traitorous opinion to herself and hid another smile before calling out hello to her sons and asking if they’d had a good day.  They called hello back, and yes they had.  Then Georgia suggested she and Sophie go to the kitchen for a cup of tea and a chat.  Mozart and wine would have to wait.
While Georgia filled the kettle and got out the mugs and teabags, Sophie pulled up a stool and set her laptop and her phone on the counter, glaring at them like they’d offended her somehow. “You know,” Georgia said,  “Your father and I survived school and university without the internet.  It’s not that hard.”
“Oh!  I nearly forgot.”  Sophie looked up suddenly and glanced at the phone on the wall.  “Dad called a while ago.  He’s going to be late tonight, but he’ll pick up a curry for dinner on the way.”
Georgia paused at the fridge, milk carton in her hand, and wondered why her husband had rung the home number, and not her mobile like he usually would.  “Did he say why he’ll be late?”
“Something about…I can’t remember. Picking something up?”
“Something apart from the curry?”
 “I think so.  I don’t know.  Maybe.”
“Sophie…” Georgia shook her head as she moved to the counter and splashed a small amount of milk into each cup.  “How hard is it to take down a simple message?”
“It’s not my fault he was so vague.  If it was important he would have texted.”
Georgia rolled her eyes.  That was the way with Sophie; if it wasn’t in a text, it wasn’t worth remembering.  Mr Gormsby definitely had a point.  “What’s the assignment about?” Georgia asked.  Her question was answered with another dramatic sigh.
“Short essay on popular culture in modern fiction.”
“Without using the internet for research?  That shouldn’t be too diffi…”
Sophie held her hand up sharply.  “Wait, that’s not all.  We also have to write a short story about searching for something and it has to be set before 1995, so the characters can’t turn to the internet for help. No Google, no Facebook, no Twitter.”
“Searching without search engines, huh?  Actually, that sounds like fun.  And you like writing, you’re good at it.”
Sophie groaned and rubbed her hands over her face.  “I know but this is…ugh.  Jenn’s doing a detective piece.  Rex is writing about someone looking for their birth parents and I have no clue what to do.”
Georgiachuckled as she passed Sophie a steaming cup and stirred some sugar into her own.  “And I suppose that’s where I come in?”
Sophie gave her a hopeful smile.  “Yes, please,” she said eagerly.  “Tell me what it was like before the internet. Did you ever have to search for something?  Or someone?”
Someone.
Georgiastopped stirring.  Goosebumps prickled her skin as memories began to stir, taking her back over twenty years, to a boy on a beach. She wondered how different things might have been, if they’d had smart phones and Facebook back then.
“Actually, I did try to find someone, once,” she said quietly, staring down at her tea. Even now, her heart fluttered as she remembered.  “But my search started with a necklace.  And a TV talent show.”
Sophie’s eyes widened, and she leaned forward. “Oh my God, really?  Who were you searching for?”
“A boy.”  Georgia hesitated a little.  “He…he was called TJ.”
“TJ.”  Sophie tried out the name.  “Who was he?  What necklace?  What show?”
“It’s a long story.  And you’d have to turn your phone off while I tell you.”
Sophie’s face reflected a brief internal struggle, but she did as her mother asked.  “Okay, phone’s off, and I’m listening,” she said.  “When was this?”
“In 1991.  It started on a Sunday night, when I was supposed to be studying...”
