First Liebster Blog Award Nomination!

Stunned! When I opened my mail yesterday and find this comment on my blog. My first.
I was just nominated for the Liebster Blog Award. Now when I got the notification it prompted me to see what it was all about. Liebster is German for favorite and is a way for bloggers who have a low following (less than 200) to connect and get their blog out there. Word to the wise: It really is just a networking tool and not only a way to gain followers.
I was nominated by Engelia at Time 2 Blog. Thank you!
Here are the rules as I know them.
1.Tell 11 things about yourself.
2.Answer 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
3.Post 11 questions for those who will be nominated by you.
4.Nominate 11 bloggers who have less than 200 followers.
5.Get in contact with those 11 bloggers in order to inform them that you nominated them.
6. Link back to the blogger who nominated you.

1. 11 Things about myself
I am married for the last 28 yearsHave three children in their twenties, one grand childI have a dry sense of humor, either you get me or you miss outI am extremely committed and a hard workerQuit does not appear in my vocabularyGood listener and observerAlways ready for a challengeI Love to read a good suspense novel, Konsalik my all time favoriteI am creative, enjoying the world of books and what it offersLove to meet new peopleI am not a big talker2. Questions from Engelia
1. What was your most frustrating moment in life thus far?
My slow computer that could not keep up with all my demands. In slow motion with every command I gave him and I wanted to scream. Yes you guess it almost no patience. My husband the ever patient one has come to my rescue and fixed it. So now my PC and I are best buddies again.

2. What is your greatest childhood memory?
O this is a easy question. I was at a tender age of fourteen at the time and as always we went on holidays to my grand parents in Kanoneiland. Now for those who does not know it is a one horse town in the middle of the Kalahari, about 40 km from Upington in the Northern Cape. One of the hottest places in South Africa. As the saying goes "There is only a wired fence between hell and that place"
But a lovely place with lots to do if you know what to look for.
Now in that year I turned fourteen Kanoneiland received electricity for the first time. A buzz went all over town and my grand mother wanted us to drive out on the road, come back and see the lights of the one road litted town. When my father did as she asked we went out on the road, drove about 2 km out of town and turned around. It was a beautiful starry night, pitch black with night critters all around you the only sound to break the silence.
The awe on my grand mother's face was memorable. I was transfixed on her lovely face almost flushed with excitement as she pointed towards the small line of lights, exclaiming the wonder of electricity in her life and what it meant for her and the small town.
I have told this story many times to my own children. The pure joy of a woman in her late seventies still remind me of the simplicity of life and how we still can enjoy such an awe struck experience.
3. What is your favorite place to be?
Western Cape, with it's picturesque mountains, openness and wide cold blue ocean.
4. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Brutally honest
5.Do you believe in luck?
I believe in working hard to eat the fruit of your labor. Luck in the grant scale of things has little to do with it. Hard work, determination and confidence are the building blocks of anything you want to do and what counts the most.
6.Have you ever cheated on or at something?
I have never cheated, it is the evidence of a low self esteem
7.Why do you blog or read?
I love to read. Blogging is something I take day by day. Appreciating the open communication between myself and authors number one and readers number two. Seeing the result of marketing and reaping the benefits of it.
8.Has love ever passed you by?
No
9.What is your greatest fear?
To make the same mistakes as before, trusting wrong people, allowing them to hurt me leaving me numb at the end.
10.Name two things on your bucket list.
I always loved horses, always wanted to learn to ride them. The reason I can indulge in a good western. So this year I am planning on accomplishing it.
To see much more of my country.
11.In your field, name an accomplishment. Shout it from the rooftops!!
Published my first book: A Pirate's Wife

#cblspromotions present Finding A Man For Sylvia, Review and Giveaway

Note: While this title contains elements of BDSM and light bondage as one of the characters is a dominatrix, please note that there are no graphic sex scenes, only comedic references.
BlurbA well-intentioned but clueless romantic is determined to find love for her lonely neighbor over her exasperated husband’s objections.
Julia Hawthorne-Florez has the best of intentions, and everyone knows what the road to Hell is paved with. Her husband Javier accuses her of playing God with people’s lives, but Julia is simply a fool for love. (Or maybe just a fool?)
When lonely Sylvia moves in across the street, Julia is determined to find her match. Of course, there are obstacles. Javier, for one, who’s forbidden any further matchmaking attempts on his well-intentioned wife’s part. And there’s the little matter of Sylvia being in love with a man who’s taken a vow of celibacy.
Julia schemes; the hamster wheel in her head spins furiously. Handsome Ted is Julia’s first choice. Except shy Ted happens to be interested in Julia’s best friend, certified dominatrix Lisa. And so it goes. Julia spins her web; Javier laughs at her. But Julia always gets the last laugh in this Latin-infused contemporary romantic comedy.

A tongue in the cheek chick lit story about matchmaking from the match makers point of view.
We meet Julia Florez over eager friend and confidant who could not bare that people are lonely, not experiencing love as she did. In her attempts to do so it caused a few problems that put a smile on your face through out the book.
Her insightful wisdom into her friends and co workers lives, taking care of the smallest detail keeps the story entertaining and the plot interesting. The characters involved were Sylvia the main purpose of her self appointed assignment. New neighbor soon to be friend. Lisa her old school friend and get this a professional Dominatrix working her charm on every man she meets but at the end with a longing for a monogamous relationship which of course Julia had to help. Then there were Ted, co worker. Shy accountant at work, virgin at thirty two but barely containing his excitement about Lisa which of course could not work, in her opinion.
Then there were Frank, her father -in-law who just could not find the right woman for himself, Chris her gay brother and priest and Raul, Sylvia's brother.
Sylvia's cause set the whole plot in motion and Javier Julia's loving husband is stuck in the middle making the most amazing dishes to entertain her friends.
A good well written story of love and how it can find you in the most unusual ways. How unusual people can find love when you think it can never work. Delightful read with quirky tones, keeping it light and fast paced.

Tour Schedule

Mercedes Maxwell’s sister’s last wish was for Mercedes to find evidence against Kat’s husband, William Braxton, and have him hung as a traitor to the crown. Mercedes isn’t naïve when it comes to capturing traitors, because her own deceased husband had once been an agent for the King when they lived in England.
When she meets William Braxton for the first time, all is not as it seems. Portraying her twin, Mercedes knows this is the only way to get close enough to William to discover his secrets. What she finds along the way are little surprises she hadn’t counted on, especially when she begins to give her heart to a man who may be a spy against the crown.

Author Marie Higgins
Since Marie Higgins was a little girl playing Barbies with her sister, Stacey, she has loved the adventure of making up romantic stories. Marie was only eighteen years old when she wrote her first skit, which won an award for Funniest Skit. A little later in life, after she’d married and had children, Marie wrote Church roadshows that were judged as Funniest and Best Written. From there, she branched out to write full-length novels based on her dreams. (Yes, she says, her dreams really are that silly)
Marie has been married for twenty-six years to a wonderful man. Together, they have three loving daughters and several beautiful grandchildren. Marie works full time for the state of Utah, where she has lived her entire life. Marie plans to keep writing, because the characters in her head won’t shut up. But her husband smiles and pretends this is normal.
Interview With Marie
1. Where did the idea come from for the book?I wrote “Take My Heart” many years ago, so I don’t recall where I got the exact idea… But I do know I was toying with different scenarios and playing the ‘what if’ game. I wanted my heroine to pretend she was someone else – and there had to be a good reason she did what she did, of course. The hero was pretending he was someone else as well, mainly because he was a Patriot and some of the things he did could get him hanged for being a traitor. 2. What genre does your book fall under?Historical romance. Is there a ‘sweet’ romance genre? If so, it would fall under that one, too. But my story is definitely sweet, and definitely historical…and definitely romance!I know I don’t write 100% historical accuracy, but my books aren’t about the historical time period…they are about the romance and the characters, and about writing a fun story.3. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?Ohhh…this question is too hard!! I really have never thought of it. My characters look like those pictures in my book trailer, and that’s what I see when I think of them. http://youtu.be/uRc8xTT8_r4So I guess my answer for this would be…I’ll let the producer decide which actors will play the parts. J 4. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?Switching roles and the pursuit of freedom come together in the hunt to discover who can be trusted and who is really the traitor during the Colonial times. 5. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? My book is self-published already…but had been previously published several years ago by a publisher. 6. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? This was my first Colonial. I had written historicals before, but they were Victorians and westerns. So when I wrote “Take My Heart”, it took longer because there was a lot more to research. I wanted to get it as historical accurate as I could, knowing not all historicals are 100% accurate. And I wanted to make it the best story I had written so far. This story had more twists and turns than my others when I first started writing it, which also was time consuming since I wanted it perfect. I wanted to drop enough hints without giving the plot away. So…the first draft took about a year. The second draft took only a few months. Usually, I can write a full length story in a couple of months, but this one took much longer. 7. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?By well-known authors – or MY other stories? Well, I’ll answer both questions because they are easy. As for the first… I honestly don’t read a lot anymore, but I haven’t found a well-known author who I can compare my story to. Yes…it’s that different. J As for the second part of that question—what other stories of MINE could I compare this story to? Only books #2 “Falling In Love Again”, and #3 “Wonderland By Night”, since I’ve added the same adventure, same level of romance, and same level of twists and turns with a bit of suspense. 8. Who or What inspired you to write this book?My dreams did. That’s where I usually get my ideas—from my dreams. And if it wasn’t for my critique partners pushing me to get this baby written…I would have given up, I’m sure.9. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? For those readers who love mystery and suspense…this book has it!

I am privileged to host Marie Higgins on my blog today. As I went through the interview questions she answered I could see so much of myself in her answers. Her simplicity and honesty comes through each one and I could learn a little bit more about this remarkable author.
A lady with many books and experience in her life that truly love to write, inspired by her dreams and motivated by a loving and caring husband. What more do we need right?
As I understand it "Take my Heart" was featured before under another name, but since I did not read the first edition this was a enjoyable read I can recommend to all lovers of historical romance and not to worried about the authenticity of the period.
Right from the start you are pulled in to the lives of twin sisters Mercedes and Katherine and just like Mercedes you think this man William Braxton must be the scum of the earth.
Your heart went out for Katherine who suffered under his hand ending up in the asylum and when Mercedes received a letter of her sister's death anger boiled in you regarding this man.
But as always you are introduced to the most perfect man any woman can dream off. Other wise it would not be a romance novel.
When we finally meet William what we have learned and what we experience are two different things. And Mercedes find herself in a world so full of lies that it was hard to decipher what is truth and what is lies. And your opinion change, switched as you are pulled into this world of treachery and deceit, finding the truth amidst all the turmoil of the constructive and interesting plot.
The cause of the Sons of Liberty struggling for freedom against the flamboyance of the King of England and his subjects and your views and opinions change to understanding and you sympathies with their cause.
I really loved the characters of both Mercedes and William. Both are strong willed and not afraid to fight for what they believe in, willing to do everything they can so that justice prevailed for the family and friends.
You see men flock to her because of her beauty, disregarding the marriage vows and openly flirting with her and how she step back and convince William that she is a "changed" woman, not the same as she were previously. And through her actions that normally speaks louder than words she changed his mind causing him to fall in love with his "wife" Breaking down every lie and replace it with truth.
Each character that were portrait in the book offered you a glimpse in the heart of Katherine and her sick and twisted game of greed, disregarding a man's feelings and his two children for her own selfish gain. Mercedes restoring their trust and confidence with persistent love and care.
A heart felt and sincere story of human emotions in the mist of a great unraveling plot that can capture the imagination of the reader, taking you away for a few hours in the world of the people and time. When fighting for the right cause were still admirable and truth prevailed.

Primal by D. A. Serra Tour and 5 Star Review

Amazon / Paperbag
PRIMAL by D.A. Serra (screenplay originally purchased by James Cameron)
The most dangerous place on Earth is between a mother and her child...With everything at stake - what are you capable of? What if the worst happens and you're not a policeman, a soldier, or a spy with weapons training and an iron heart? What if you're a schoolteacher - a mom? In this gritty crime thriller a family vacation takes a vicious turn when a fishing camp is invaded by four armed men. With nothing except her brains, her will, and the element of surprise on her side, Alison must learn to kill or watch her family die.
And then, things get worse.
Praise for Primal from Tour I:
"D.A Serra does a great job in making the reader connect to the characters. I could picture everything as it happened, right as I was reading it. D.A Serra paints a picture, and puts you in it as it's happening, and once the action starts there's no way you're stopping until you get to the very end. This is a great read, and one I thoroughly enjoyed, and James Cameron just purchased the screenplay." Jamie, Minnesota Girl in LA
"Serra delivers a suspenseful thriller that is packed with fear, hope, family love, revenge, and desperation. The adrenaline rush will keep you on the edge of your seat anticipating the next move. The characters are well-developed. Serra gives a sense of balance in both a functioning and dysfunctional family. She draws the reader in with a story that flows smoothly and at a steady pace filled with action and drama. Serra also paints a beautiful, yet terrifying setting in the woods of Northern Minnesota. Her vivid descriptions places the reader in the scene as the action unfolds." Mason Canyon, Thought In Progress
"Ms. Serra is a screenwriter of many years and this book has been optioned for a movie byTitanic and Avatar director James Cameron. Can I see this as a movie? You bet I can, and a good one. Primal is smart, well written with a strong willed female lead that I think women and men would flock to see on film. This is an exciting story that I can happily recommend." Dark Haven Maven"What a great book! It's scary, suspenseful and very thought provoking. It will keep you grab you and not let you go, even after you've read the last word. This book is about something that every mother fears...her child in danger. It shows what lengths you would go to, to make sure your child is safe. Much happens in this book and if you decide to read it, make sure you have first the time, and second won't be interrupted. It's hard to put down." Vicki, I'd Rather Be Reading At the Beach
"What a fantastic story, this had it all while keeping me on the edge of my seat. At only 222 pages this seriously left a thrilling impression on me. Primal was so much more than I expected, great characters, intense situations, the flow and energy, dialogue, plot and overall I found it came together and was believable. What a great wrap up ending, even if you figure it out it is still shocking, very well executed. I was thoroughly impressed and entertained throughout. I thought this can cross over to many genre fans appreciating it but it is a Thriller. You get Suspense, Romance, Adult Fiction, Crime all wrapped up to create a memorable story. Another read for the men in your life, they will appreciate as much as females." Marcie, Tea Time With Marcie
What Some Other Reviews Have Said:
"I honestly loved Primal. It is incredibly well-written with deep, emotionally-charged characters and a storyline punctuated with fear and adrenaline. I found Primal to be an incredibly quick read, mostly because I had a hard time putting it down. I also liked the fact that author D.A. Serra delved into the emotional spiral eclipsing Alison's life after the horrifying events on the island and wasn't content to simply go for all-out action, although there's action a-plenty. I highly recommend Primal if you are looking for a thriller to read this summer. You won't be disappointed."-Psibabe, GameVortex Communications (AKA Ashley Perkins )
"To some, Minnesota's North Woods are a soothing antidote to the stresses of civilization. But to others, all that unpaved, unpeopled wilderness is just plain unnerving. And therein lies the seed of some very spooky storytelling."- Amy Goetzman, MinnPost
"The book was originally written as a screenplay and there is certainly a cinematic quality to it, with moody descriptions, lively dialogue and a relentless sense of pace. The writing, however, is unexpected, poetic and philosophical by turn, without impinging on the action. The description of a mother hiding a gun in her son's Batman pyjamas must be one of the most moving, yet ominous, passages of crime fiction I have read in a long time, while the use of household props to distract a rampant killer is ingenious. A very confident debut novel, highly recommended as a summer read, although perhaps not if you are planning a camping trip."- Marina Sofia, Crime Fiction Lover

An exceptional crime thriller pact with a wonderful plot that held your attention from beginning to end. Masterfully planned story line that demanded attention and you are introduced to the Kraft and Burne family so opposite from each other that you wonder how they will come together. Serra managed to hold your imagination as you are introduced to Alison. A real suburban teacher who have never been in the woods, never went on camping trips with no idea of survival. Her husband Hank, her partner and friend, a wonderful father and music lover with their son Jimmy, nine years old with the typical characteristic of a boy of that age. Adorable, sweet and excited about life. Then you meet Ben, Gravel, Kent and Theo Burne the epitome of evil in its ugliest form. And the seven come together at a fishing ground and it went down hill from there fast and ferocious. Alison’s delicate system could not handle the outing and she found her self separated from her family and co campers when these evil four are introduced. And we see that what were supposed to be a pleasant weekend away became a nightmare that changed them all forever. Finding each others weakness and strengthens amidst the show down of survival. When they finally return home Alison, Hank and Jimmy found it difficult to adapt back into normal life. Especially Alison who could not shake the experience leaving her paranoid, on the edge, fearful and bereft from her former self. Yet a hero in every ones eyes. But for some reason she could not go back to her old life, standing guard vegetal at all hours of the day and night. People became scared of her outburst her paranoia to have weapons in the house, alarmed every inch of their home and always looking for that one person who promised to return. Her marriage and relationship with her son suffered and when she finally decided that maybe this one man will not return, and she let her guard down, then all hell broke loose and yet again she fights for her family. Willing to lay down her life so that they could be free.Fast paced, with well developed characters, this story keep you at the edge of your chair, not willing to stop to make sure Alison was right and not crazy as every one believed. Telling your self the story could not end in that manner. Hoping it does not.A book that is definitely one of my favorites for this year and I can recommend to all lovers of thrillers. Creating a sigh at the end as you relax and smile knowing it was all worth it at the end.

Heart of the Ocean Interview and Giveaway

by Heather B. Moore
A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a handsome stranger . . .
What more could Eliza Robinson want?
Except for maybe her life.
In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.
While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.
After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

Interview with Heather B. Moore
1. Where did the idea come from for the book?Heart of the Ocean was a very organic book, meaning I had an idea for a girl coming into a Puritan town and finding out a dark secret. That was all I had to go on. I didn’t plot in advance, but plotted as the story unfolded. Then as I started writing, the voice of the past came up, and I realized that it would be the ghost who is trying to tell her story.
2. What genre does your book fall under?Heart of the Ocean is a Historical Romantic Suspense novel.
3. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?Younger versions of Claire Forlani and Hugh Jackman.
4. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a handsome stranger . . . What more could Eliza Robinson want, except for maybe her life.5. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?Heart of the Ocean is published through Mirror Press, my own indie imprint.
6. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?I spent about four months on the first draft of Heart of the Ocean.
7. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? It’s been years since I’ve read it, but perhaps Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
8. Who or What inspired you to write this book? One of the most inspirational books I’ve read is Kitchen Privileges by Mary Higgins Clark. I’ve long been a mystery fan and when I read this memoir, I realized that it was possible to be a writer and a mother at the same time. Ms. Clark inspired me when she said she’d write from 5:00-7:00 a.m. every morning so as not to interfere with her job and her kids (she was a widow at the time). I thought, “I can do that.” And I did—it took three novels before I finally got one published, but Clark’s story inspired me not to give up.
9. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?Heart of the Ocean is a multi-layered novel and not a straight-forward mystery. The main conflict of the story is driven by a woman named Helena who dies twenty years before the novel opens. Her death is a mystery, but so are the last few years of her life. When people get too close to uncovering her cause of death, they become endangered too, and many other dark layers of secrets still need to be uncovered.

Char knows that her marriage is over. She also knows that an office romance is not what she wants. Her heart and his actions, tell her otherwise.
Char consistently pushes Andy away, trying to keep some semblance of order in her now-crazy life. Getting through one last major account becomes her focus; then she can concentrate on her future and her independence. Her plans are on track, until she discovers an unexpected souvenir from Puerto Rico: she is carrying Andy’s baby.

“It’s about time you answer your phone! Where the hell is my wife?”
“I’m doing great; thanks for asking. How are you, Payton?”
“Cut the crap, Banker. Where’s Charlie?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean ‘you don’t know’? Why the hell haven’t you been answering your phone? You with her?”
“She took off, jackass. I don’t know where she’s at, but I do know she’s okay. At least, she was last time I talked to her.”
“You talked to her?” He sounded desperate to know anything he could.
“A few days ago, yes. My guess is she’s cooling off. Just let her.”
“Don’t tell me how to handle my wife!”
“Fair enough. You want pointers on your tart?”
“I figured she’d bawl to you about that. Look—”
“Suck it, Payton. I’m not getting in a pissing match with you.
I’m not avoiding your calls; I just got my phone replaced and I saw that you called. Letting you know she was okay last I talked to her is as far as I’m going with you and trust me, that’s more than you deserve in my book.” Andy hit end.
“And what do I deserve?” Andy found Char standing at the doorway; she had been listening.
“Not his line of bull.”
“Really? Am I any better than he is? Look at us.” Her lip began to tremble as she walked towards the bed then sat down.
Andy sat next to her, wrapping his arm around her. “It’s not the same, Char.”
“The hell it isn’t.” Harshly, she wiped away a tear.
“Under any other circumstances, this would not have happened between us. We’ve been away on short trips before. Nothing has ever happened. I didn’t think you could even stand to be around me half the time.” He stood, picked up a box of tissues from the dresser then sat back down. She accepted a few and blew her nose.
She let herself laugh a little. “I couldn’t.”
“See?” he said with another one of his grins.
“So what now?”
“Water skiing,” he replied, matter-of-factly.

An excellent read of restoration and forgiveness in this new Novel "Be Still & Know."
The author done a remarkable work to bring these two topics in the forefront of the plot that brought our two main characters to life.
The story is over the span of three years divided in segments where we get to know about these two's struggles and making wrong decisions because of past hurts and unforgiveness.
Alvin Reigns a young man who was burned because of the unfaithfulness of his fiance finding himself in the arms of different women each night. Trying to forget but yet bringing harm to himself, knowing that this was not the path of redemption and healing.
Kai Bennett who too had meaningless affairs with several men, loosing her self because of a past she too could not erase and a mother who simply did not love her. Isolating her self in the process. Thinking that she is doing this out of protection. But yet going deeper into the pit of unforgiveness and bitterness. Allowing herself no time to reflect on the beauty surrounding her.
But when these two people meet they were drawn to each other like magnets. Finding peace and comfort in one another. Fitting easily into each other as if were always been the case.
Because of her past Alvin's support system warned him about her. He finally gave his heart to the Father allowing Him to restore him when they met. And he had to struggle with the constant questions if she is the acceptable wife he longed for in his life. Since she was not a devoted Believer. Seeking answers in his daily Bible studies and prayer life he found the answers. But it was not necessarily as he wanted it. Challenged often by her unsavory past to find the woman and accept her for who she was. Choosing to stand with her no matter the gossip and sour feelings of his older sister.
The relationship between her and her absent father was the one that stood out the most. Did the Heavenly Father not promised in the Word that he will restore the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers? This touched my heart deeply. And like the father in the Prodigal son he waited patiently for her to forgive and return to him without question. Accepting him so that he could restore her position in his household.
I must say I was really impressed with the support system Alvin had. His brothers and sisters being there every step of the way. Not minding the hour, they just showed up.
When Kai's family life was also restored we found the same dedication from her brothers adoring her as if she was always part of their lives. Loving her and making her part of them as if nothing were broken.
I book I can recommend to those who love a good Christian Romance.

Daisy: Between a Rock and a Hard Place. My review and Giveaway of this remarkable lady.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is Daisy’s “look back” at her life, and…finally, a self-analysis of how, and possibly, why she became the Daisy Gatson Bates for which she is known throughout the world. Author Janis F. Kearney recounts the leader’s many friendships, relationships and associations that helps define who she was in the eyes of the world - from Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Clinton; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt; the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.; Roy Wilson, NAACP President; Thurgood Marshall and Wiley Branton, NAACP attorneys, Maya Angelou and Jackie Robinson… and countless others.
The author met Daisy Bates in the summer of 1969, at the age of16. From that moment, the high school student dreamed of working for the woman her father called one of Arkansas’ greatest leaders – black or white.

Huttig…A Vestige of Lumber and Leaders
What manner of town was this Huttig, to have produced a child such as Daisy Lee Gatson, born some 11 years after the launch of southwest Arkansas’ timber industry? Daisy Gatson was born in into the state’s most thriving timber belt. It spread to an area wide open for growth, and with little obstacles - no environmentalists lamenting the incoming lumber mills that came from neighboring Louisiana, and other northern states; no loud declarations of the industry raping and ravaging the South’s rich woodlands. Instead, it was a progress that most Arkansans invited with open arms, viewing it as a boost to the state’s economic standing in the region. The people of the area and the state’s economic leaders fully endorsed the manufacturing of southwest Arkansas’ woodlands. What would a small, poor area such as Huttig do with all the giant trees, anyway?
This small southwest Arkansas town was the imagination and creation of businessmen who wanted to ensure the success of their lumber mills by ensuring that their workers had a place to live, shop and to send their children to school – all within the town of Huttig. They created a functional, though segregated, small town for their white and black workers and their families.
In short order, Huttig morphed into a vital, thriving town, critical to the growth of the state, and one that drew every kind of man from other parts of the state, and as far away as Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. Some came with the honest desire to find good jobs that allowed them to feed and clothe their families. Others – both black and white - came for far less forthright reasons...work, as well as freedom to indulge in `open’ activities. Like fast and loose girls said to frequent the area, the new town’s moral reputation traveled fast. The architects of the town’s physical structures were single-focused men, set on constructing a profitable company, and an inhabitable township. Unfortunately, they left the soul of their new town to its inhabitants.

Of Sticks and Stones
It is difficult not to paint a parallel between Daisy’s childhood relationship to whites – that burning, but helpless hatred of whites who, according to all reports from family and friends, had murdered her mother and warped her childhood; and her feelings about Orval Faubus, who she saw as destroying yet more innocent children’s lives.
In many ways, even with its sense of horror and excitement, the 1957 Central High Crisis was the crest, the crescendo of actions and activities that fueled Daisy’s life over the next few years. While there comes a time in the midst of the 57 Crisis that she questions her role, and the sanity of it all, more often, she accepts with fortitude and conviction that this was an opportunity that fate or God, or both presented to her; and she dare not pass it up.
While the `57 Crisis centered on the two-year integration tug of war between the Central High School administrators, the governor and Daisy Bates; for those looking on from the outside, the war had few if any victors. For Daisy Gatson Bates, her role in the Integration Crisis may have been what she was placed on earth to do, in spite of, or because of the conflicted childhood back in Huttig, Arkansas.
Hate was something Daisy Lee Gatson would embrace as a child, and though she believed she had ridded herself of that early hate, to save herself; the `57 Crisis would likely cause its reappearance. Unfortunately, its reappearance would happen as she moved into her middle years – a most inopportune time for a woman’s emotional conflicts, as she dealt with the 24-hour stresses of the life she chose.
It is most likely that Daisy had repressed, rather than resolved the bitterness that planted its seed the day the Huttig butcher sent her home with fat rather than lean meat, and dared Daisy to question him; the day she learned of her mother’s murder and his father’s disappearance, for fear for his life; of Orval Faubus’ inflammatory segregationist actions, to the adults who taunted and cursed and hit the nine children she’d adopted in her heart; and even the horrific vitriol and damnation expressed in the letters mailed to Daisy’s newspaper and home.

My review will not be complete if I do not add a photo of this remarkable whom the author Janis F. Kearney has written a wonderful tribute too.

Before the reading of this book I have never heard of Daisy Gatson Bates simply because I am not American. But during the read I search the net to learn more about this gutsy woman. A warrior that was not afraid to stand up for what is right. Her pursuit for equality center stage in her mind, thoughts and action. But what the author accomplish best in this book were to introduce us to the woman behind the tuff facade. Her doubts, fears, struggles in her daily life and how she had to adapt to a unfriendly world out to hurt her, just because of the color of her skin.
Never looking pass the strong willed fiery woman who was not afraid to stand and fight. Or the beautiful woman, petite in posture with a soft heart and a love for her people.
You are drawn into the historical account leading up before her birth that shaped this woman to what she had become. It shaped her world on so many levels but yet she did not use it as a excuse to lay down but to stand up and do the right thing.
With a friend, confidant and husband by her side. L.C Bates who was a remarkable man in his own right. Who guided her with a soft touch and wisdom filled words. Giving her the courage to accomplish the task at hand.
I learned many things during this read, in some things I could feel with her, sensing her struggles. The way the author told it, it was heart warming. Shining the light on a subject that still gives problems all over the world.
A book I can recommend for teachers and school children and for those who love to learn more about the history of this Nation, the United States of America.
Thought provoking and a eye opener to many who is hiding behind all the excuses of not doing the right thing.
This fiery woman from the little town of Huttig was born to invoke in each of us the character of determination and will. To accomplish what you have set your mind on and not be afraid.
Thank you Janis F. Kearney for introducing me to this remarkable woman.a Rafflecopter giveaway

It is my first read of this remarkable author's work and definitely not the last. Heather B. Moore has penned down a wonderful story set in New England and the Puritan reign in that area. Familiar with the believes and in some ways an admirer of this group that landed in North East America making this their new home away from home. Forsaking the heretics in England in search for a new life. Their deep believe in the Almighty and His hand upon their lives is remarkable. But then they were also extremely religious and anything apposing to their believe were heretic. Learned nothing of what they fled from in the first place. Allowing no room for grace and mercy from a Redeeming Father.
In Ocean of the Heart this issues is dealt with sufficiently. We meet a young woman's ghost seeking revenge, Helena Talbot who was banned because of an unwanted pregnancy at the very tender age of seventeen. Placed in jail and after her trail placed in house arrest so that her condition could not be seen by the towns people.
She fled to a Lighthouse where she remained until her death. Leaving behind a little three year old boy and many questions. Ostracized and judge leaving her in turmoil long after her untimely death.
The story begins with our main character Eliza Robinson running from a controversial break up in New York landing up in the same house young Helena lived. Helena reached out to the young woman and so began the interesting plot to this great historical christian read.
We meet Jon Porter, the disregarded little boy now a grown man seeking his own footing in life, engaged to Apryl. A pretty ornament that clung to him for what he could give while flirting with another man Thomas Beesly. An evil rich man with his own agenda, spreading gossip to suit his purpose almost destroying the Robinson family at the end.
In search for legitimate papers to claim his inheritance the two young people met under dire circumstances.
Murder, jail time, gossip, misunderstandings and the persistent voice of the ghost kept them apart and you glued to the pages. Dreams that tried to reveal the truth kept our young character tired, making wrong decisions. Almost costing her, her love.
The budding romance between the two were constantly thawed with meddling parents, a flirting fiance, a insisting young Puritan and the search of belonging to a wonderful end. As they searched their hearts making way through all the nitty gritty's of life you learn to love and care for them both, seeking happiness for them in their journey which take them over the waters, discovering new places and in the process discovering their hearts.
A Great read I can recommend.
