Interview with M.B. Feeney: A Little 'Bout Love

So my email was being a bit of a pain over this past weekend. Cowboy and I are celebrating our second anniversary today! In part of celebrating, after two years of marriage, this past Saturday we were finally able to have our actual wedding ceremony. (Brace yourself, here comes a mushy picture.)

Yay love! That same day, this wonderful and unconventional interview about love with M.B. Feeney was supposed to post! So, enjoy!

An Interview with M.B. Feeney... About [Mostly] Love!

M.B. Feeney
Facebook
Website1. Who was your first love?
My first love... I'd have to say Donnie Whalberg from NKOTB (the Hanging Tough years) - Boy! That man was my everything!

2. Do you believe in love at first sight?
I don't. I believe in attraction at first sight and from that love can grow. I don't believe you can love someone until you know them and are able to accept their faults as well as their good points.

3. When was your first kiss?
I was a late bloomer. I want innocent until i was about 15 or 16. It all went downhill from there ;)

4. What is the cheesiest pick-up line you've ever heard?
When I was 15, I worked a Saturday job in a library. One of the guys, James, was at uni and used to come in on a Saturday and test out lines on me to see what reaction he'd get. The cheesiest was "That dress looks great on you, it'd look better on my floor".

5. How big of a role does love play in your writing?
It honestly depends on the subject matter. I tend to write British Chick Lit with a side order of sarcasm, but I'm trying to branch out of my comfort zone. In my current works, love isn't just romantic, it's familial which is harder to convey due to a lack of sexual attraction and interaction.

6. Do you believe that once you love someone, part of you loves them forever, or once it's done is it completely done?
I think that every person you love, or has loved you, leaves a mark on you forever. You'll never forget that person, even if the parting of ways wasn't always smooth.

7. What attracted you to your current s/o?
His ridiculous (and frankly awful) sense of humour. We were friends first which I believe is a good starting ground for any relationship.

8. Is love worth waiting for when you know that somebody is "the one"?
I think that's a tough call. If people consistently wait for 'the one', they could be missing out on so much, and who knows. The one may stem from the 'friend' or the 'the one right now'.

9. Are love letters sweet?
they are, but also can be too much if done all the time. My S/O tends to text me rather than write a note. They make me smile as I know he's thinking about me. (I'm not coming across as very romantic am I?)

10. Do you write "steamy" scenes in your stories, or do you let it trail off and leave it to the reader's imagination?
I'm a big believer in a good 'Fade to Black' as I feel the reader's imagination is far more powerful than anything I could write. Also, I get uncomfortable writing those scenes hahaha.

11. Are you working on any new pieces now?
I'm working on a collection of military based short stories which I will self publish as each story is far too short for any publishers to consider and also, I think they fit together nicely and I wouldn't want to separate them to place into other anthologies. I've also started a new YA/NA story that I'm hoping with which I can dip my toe into paranormal writing.

12. Any advice for aspiring writers before you go?
Keep going. Write, write and write some more. Find your voice and don't let anyone change how you write.

Spotlighting J.J. Ellis

As indie authors we are each others best advocates! By promoting other authors, you gain access to more talk about you, but you also help out others like you at the same time! I'm so honored to be able to help my fellow authors, and J.J. Ellis is here in the spotlight today with her book Alaskan Ambush: A Sunset Destiny Romance (Volume 2).

Blurb:

“…I still love you.”
A two year relationship that ended because of a difference in lifestyle left Olivia Mannon and Alex Paige missing each other. Though they still loved each other, they lost all contact.
A sprinkling of matchmaking dust, a cruise to Alaska, and a float plane tour of Misty Fjord National Monument brings them back into each other’s lives; for better or for worse.
Can Olivia change her ‘suite at a five star resort’ lifestyle to agree with Alex’s ‘camping outdoors’ way of life, or will they lose each other again? This time forever…

~*~
Author Bio:

JJ Ellis is first and foremost the mother to five children, four girls and one boy. She is also a wife, blogger and now author. As a Communication Studies major in college she never once thought she would be a writer. She wanted to be a celebrity publicist, but not a writer. Then one day, when she was in her thirties, she suddenly had ideas that would just not leave her alone. Now eight years later, and with a lot of stopping and starting, she feels she is exactly where she ought to be!
Alaskan Ambush, her second novel, is the second in a series about the Mannon children and their matchmaking mother.
She lives with her husband, kids and one crazy mutt in Casper, WY. She enjoys reading, writing, computing and graphic design. She looks forward to writing many more romance novels with wonderful, loving characters.

Excerpt:

“Alex, I don’t think we should talk about this. My life is fine, yours is fine. Let’s just leave it at that.” The
“If that’s what you want,” he whispered. “When you’re done with your soup I’ll take you back to the ship.” He’d been prepared to fight for her, but now for some reason, his fight was gone.
“I’m done, I guess we should go now.”
“Okay.” He answered.
The ride to the dock wasn’t a pleasant one. The tension was thicker than the fog that rolls in off the ocean. Neither of them had the courage to say much of anything so they rode along in awkward silence. When Alex stopped the truck, he reached over and grabbed her hand. “Today meant a lot to me Olivia, if you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”
“Thank you.” A bittersweet smile crossed her face. “Today meant a lot to me too.”
“Give me your phone, Doll,” Alex demanded.
She didn’t question it, she just handed it over. He typed something into hers and then something into his and handed it back.
He leaned over and kissed her gently. “Goodbye again, Olivia.”
“Goodbye Alex,” she whispered. She hopped down out of the truck and sprinted across the street and when she turned to wave goodbye, he was next to his vehicle waving back at her.
Olivia made it across the gangplank and through security before the tears came and she was blissfully alone in the elevator as it climbed to deck six.

three hardest sentences she would ever utter.

Interview with Crystal Smith-Connelly

1. Tell us something about yourself that is *not* in your bio?
My favorite author is Linwood Barclay, my favorite playwright is Steve Martin, my favorite TV show is Arrested Development, my favorite movie is Cannibal!: The Musical, and my favorite band is Flight of the Conchords. : )

2. Did you always plan on writing?
Yes. I’ve loved writing since I was a kid, and I used to want to be a singer-songwriter…but then I wrote my first play and realized that I had the ability to make people laugh, so I took some playwriting classes in college and loved writing plays so much that I wanted to do it for a living.

3. What type of food is your favorite? Does it ever make an appearance in your writing?
Greek food is my favorite, but it’s never made an appearance in my writing…you’d think it would’ve since I’ve written a bunch of plays about Greek mythology.

4. What book has most influenced you as a whole person, not as a writer?
This is a hard one…I could tell you without even thinking which books have influenced me as a writer (Lamb by Christopher Moore and Naked Pictures of Famous People by Jon Stewart, to name a few), but I really had to think about this one. I guess the best answer would be Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black…I can’t think of any book that I’ve related to as much as that one, and anyone who has read my sacrilegious plays probably wouldn’t be surprised by that.

5. Do you prefer noise when you write, such as music or activity, or do you prefer to write in silence?
I usually write in front of the TV while something funny is on.

6. How does your family feel about your writing?
The family members who have read my writing like it, and most of my family bought For I Am Zeus, my first book, pretty soon after it was published. My relatives who go to church probably wouldn’t like my second book too much. ; )

7. Do you do any traveling for your writing?
I traveled to Maryland to see my ten-minute play, “Never Trust an Angel,” performed at Cecil College, and I went to Los Angeles to see my one-act play “Godly Acres” at the Edgemar Center for the Arts. I’m going to the UFO Festival in Roswell, New Mexico next month, and even though it’s just part of my vacation, I’m hoping it will inspire me to write a new play.

8. What is your favorite piece that you have ever written?
“Godly Acres”…it’s a play about Greek gods in group therapy, and it was so much fun to write! After I saw it performed in L.A., I wrote a sequel with the goddesses, and I had fun writing that too.

9. Do you stick to one genre when you write, or several? What genre(s)?
Just one: humor. I want to spend my life making people laugh.

10. Do you have a favorite character in your most recent release? Who is it?
Satan is my favorite character in Never Trust an Angel and Other Plays…in the book, he’s not the evil guy that most people think of when they picture the devil. The worst thing he’s ever done is lead a revolt against God because he was fed up with the way God treated him; Satan is a man who loves his family, cares about education (he’s the head of Hell University and hopes that his overachieving son will want to get his college education there), and has just found out that his wife has been keeping a huge secret from him. And like most people, Satan really hates Hitler…but unfortunately he can’t avoid him as much as he’d like since they both live in Hell.

11. Are you working on anything now?
I’m rewriting Satan!: The Musical. I wrote it in college, and then a few years later, I wrote a non-musical version of it where I changed a few of the characters…so now I’m working on merging the two versions of the play and making the songs longer.

12. Any advice for aspiring writers and fellow authors before you go?
Never play it safe. Write what you want to write, and don’t worry about who might be offended by it. (What other advice would you expect from the woman who wrote a musical about Satan?). ; )

Planners, planners everywhere!

I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned before that I enjoy being organized. If not, this is me, mentioning it. When I say organized, I don't just mean everything has a place. I mean binders filled with meticulously detailed information, schedules, etc.
The problem with this has become the following: too many binders. My heart stops to even think there could be such a thing! I LOVE my binders. The issue is, I have a home binder, for personal and family-related things, a writing binder, and then two stories have individual binders, plus our bills binders, plus my writing, editing, and blogging binder...
Do you see what I mean? Every day I lug out all of these binders in order to go through each calendar inside of them, and it's becoming a little much, and is starting to let stuff slip through the cracks. (Note the lack of post on Wednesday. Yikes!)
That's what I've decided to create one MIGHTY binder. Cue the resounding triumphant trumpets. (Score one for alliteration while we're at it.) This will be one MASSIVE calendar for myself, my family, my writing, my blogging, editing, all of it. I give you this head's up, because I'll be sharing part of it with y'all as a insight to how this brain's gears crank from sun up to sun down... And then some.
No, seriously, I fell asleep and dreamed about planners. It was more exciting than you think.
Keep an eye out!

There are good days, there are bad days...

There are good weeks, and then there are bad weeks. Yikes.
Bad morning? It happens. Bad day? Crappy, but they happen too. Bad weeks? Goodness gracious, what a nightmare.
Last week was a bad week, and the week before wasn't much better. My husband, Cowboy, has been on shift work, working nights. What this means is that he works from six pm to six am, sleeps from seven am (when he finally gets home) to about one pm, and then we have to cram in the responsibilities he handles in the house, family time, and dinner into the next four hours, because he has to leave at five to go back to work.
To say that the time sucked would be quite the understatement. Mixing that up with the fact that I don't sleep well to begin with, my afternoon nap I try to sneak in did not happen those two weeks. This pretty much left me a big, dysfunctional blob with hair sticking out all over the place despite my new hair cut, in t-shirts that I *think* were clean, and pajama pants unless otherwise necessary. Charming visual, eh?
That leads in to today, where I'm now trying to play catch-up on everything. Yeahhh. Not just all of my work responsibilities, but those of the domestic nature, too.
That being said, I'm off to do laundry, my all-time favorite thing EVER! Oops, sorry, didn't mean to splash the sarcasm all over the place. Lol. Know tonight, after that's done and the children are in bed, I'll be sitting back on my side of the screen, working hard.
Take care all! Don't forget to check out some of the interviews and reviews posted over the past few weeks!

Interview with John J. Higgins

1. Tell us something about yourself that is *not* in your bio?
There are so many things that aren’t in my bio. I am very much a 007 aficionado. My dad died when I was three years old and my mom remarried a guy that no one in their right mind would use as a role model. A few years later I saw my first James Bond movie and thought he was beyond cool. He became my role model. He stayed cool no matter what was happening around him, he stayed on purpose no matter what obstacles the enemy or even his own organization threw at him, and he stayed in the present moment even as it appeared that there was no way out, because by doing so he was able to take advantage of that one slim opening that came just before certain death. My life has really followed the same pattern.

2. Did you always plan on writing?
I think the idea of writing novels came to me after I had seen my first James Bond movie when I was ten. In short order I read almost all of Ian Fleming’s novels and thought it would be fun to write some myself. Of course at ten I didn’t have much of a knowledge base of the world to make that work well. I was working on a farm at the time, and driving a tractor! But the idea of 007 baling hay was not particularly appealing even to me.

3. What type of food is your favorite? Does it ever make an appearance in your writing?
Well my first novels are about the Almighty’s creation of the Universe, Seven Heavens, Angels and of course mankind and the Earth. My favorite food is beef stroganoff, not a food readily available at that time. Of course, that begs the question of the Forbidden Fruit. . . which I have to plead the right to not incriminate myself.

4. What book has most influenced you as a whole person, not as a writer?
I wish I could just name one book but I have read so much over the years from biographies of people like Abraham Lincoln, to ancient philosophers like Marcus Aurelius, to spiritual writers like Wayne Dyer and Brian Weiss, to psychological theorists like Carl Jung and Karen Horney, to relationship theorists like Harville Hendrix, to Rudyard Kipling and his poem of advice to a young man entitled “If” and just common sense writers like Dale Carnegie. I have assimilated things from each and every one of those books and writings and it has made my life all the richer because of those writers’ thoughts and beliefs.

5. Do you prefer noise when you write, such as music or activity, or do you prefer to write in silence?
Although I love music I do need quiet as I generally almost go into a trance when I write it’s meditative to me on some levels. Of course being able to travel like that to the Heavens is joyous, but the trips to Hell are not.

6. How does your family feel about your writing?
My family is extremely supportive. It’s funny because my mom always told me that I should be a writer and she would be so proud, unfortunately, my books have been published after she has passed. My brother is ecstatic about my books, he has been reading it in-between his several jobs. And all my cousins are great about it too, I had to do a book signing just for them.

7. Do you do any traveling? (If yes, just for pleasure, or does traveling find its way into your writing?)
I haven’t done a lot of travelling yet, was spoiled in that my youngest sister had a dive shop in the Bahamas and it’s always so beautiful and the water so clear there. Of course scuba diving there spoils you, because of the clarity. So far I haven’t put in any of those experiences, as I have been dealing more with the Heavens. That has been one of the great things about being able to fly a plane, you get to see the skies and clouds close up also the sense of soaring far above the Earth.

8. How do you feel about the first piece that you ever wrote? Do you think that will change as the years go on?
I have been writing in one form or another for most of my life. I had taken an upper level creative writing course in college; the professor was reluctant to allow for me to remain in the class. I told her that by the time of the first graded assignments if she felt I could not do the work, I would withdraw from the class. Needless to say, I wound up remaining in the class and earned an A+ in it. During my career in government I wrote many policy papers and then as a prosecutor I wrote many briefs. I like to think that my writing improves the more I write, and I have enjoyed learning to write in many formats and with different purposes.

9. Do you stick to one genre when you write, or several? What genre(s)?
Well, my first published novels are in a genre that crosses between paranormal on one end all the way through to Biblical on the other. Whether it is considered even historical fiction is also a possibility. I also have young adult series that I have been working on, some governmental conspiracy books, and of course crime/mystery books as I spent a large part of my career in those spheres.

10. Have you ever gotten so into writing a character that you become “lost” in their life?
Yes, when I write, I get lost in all of my character’s lives. I have been told my books make the reader feel like they are standing there with the characters. It’s what makes for good writing in my humble opinion.

11. Are you working on anything now?
Yes, I am halfway done with writing Book 4 of my series of the Archangel Jarahmael. The first three took place primarily in Heaven, these next three will take primarily in the Underworld (Hades and Hell), and the last three will be primarily on the Earth. Of course the story will bring along all three locations and the characters associated with Heaven, Hell and Earth throughout.

12. Any advice for aspiring writers and fellow authors before you go?
Writing just takes courage and discipline and suspending the judging parts of one’s mind. It can be lonely in that as you progress you go into your own world so deep that really no one can advise you about whatever you are wrestling with because it would take too long to explain and it would also ruin it for them as a reader to experience it as it unfolds in its entirety. And you have to keep at it, there are days that it feels like nothing good is coming but if you can write even on those days you may be able to use what at first you think isn’t worthwhile somewhere else in your story. And while you are writing don’t listen to the voice that says what you are writing is lousy, you just have to keep getting it down. You can always edit it later.

Interview with Forbes Arnone

Author
Forbes Arnone1. Tell us something about yourself that is *not* in your bio?

I love to dance. I took dance lessons from when I was little until I was about sixteen. Then as soon as I could go clubbing, I’d spend the whole time on the dance floor. Family get togethers with my husband’s family always end in dancing. I’ll dance any type of music and have the time of my life doing it.

2. Did you always plan on writing?
No, I had no idea what I wanted to do. The direction I went, sort of fell into my lap and it took me here. Writing for me was always a natural thing when I was younger. I used to be really good at writing lyrics and poems, and I was an avid reader. Growing up, I wanted to be an actress one week, a fashion designer the next, and a Marine the next and so on, I never actually said I wanted to be a writer. I have accomplished so many things in my life, because when I really set my mind to something, I always go for it.

3. If there were a reality series based off of your life, what would the title be?
God, I’m not good at coming up with things on the fly, so I’ll have to use what my dad used to call me: Italian Brat.

4. If you absolutely HAD to choose, what is your favorite book?
This is actually not that difficult. The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani is my most favorite book ever. I have a few that follow up very closely, but this touched me so much.

5. If you had an opportunity to interview someone from history, who would you choose, and why?
Jane Austen. She is such an enigma and we know very little about her. She was not really famous until she was dead and her sister, Cassandra destroyed most of their correspondence amongst other things, and there is really not much true confirmed information about her out there. I want to know it all, so I’d have to interview her.

6. How does your family feel about your writing?
I feel like a truly blessed person. My family loves to support me in anything I do and everyone is so happy and excited for me. I haven’t seen my mother get so ecstatic over something like she does in a long time. My father reads everything I write and waits with bated breath for more. My husband is so helpful in pulling all of my weight around the house while I follow my dreams. And my boys are proud of their momma.

7. If you were stranded on an island that no transportation could get to or from, what two survival tools would you take?
Electricity and a computer. I don’t care if they have to run an extension cord all the way there, I need power. :)

8. What was your favorite childhood game?
On the streets, it was Hide and Seek and Catch, but inside, I loved playing Risk.

9. When you talk with yourself (don’t lie, we all know we do it!) do you do such out loud, or only in your head?
Definitely in my head, but I think I remember talking to myself out loud when I was a kid. I was an only child for thirteen years.

10. Is it a crawfish, or a crawdad?
I would definitely say crawfish, but I didn’t know what those were until I went to New Orleans years ago. Where I’m from, we have lobsters… big, big crawfish.

11. Are you working on anything now?
Yes, edits on my novel. However, I have been working on a couple of new stories in my head lately. The stories just speak to me and I work them over and over until they begin to make sense.

12. Any advice for aspiring writers and fellow authors before you go?
I don’t know if I’m qualified to give anyone advice on writing, but I can give some life advice that will come in handy. Whatever it is you want to do in life, work toward it and go for it. Don’t let fear or uncertainty ever hold you back.

Review: "Midnight Caller" by N.J. Cole

*Please note: Reviews are not done on a "star" basis. These are purely written reviews of stories on a content basis.*

Rebecca Summers enjoys pleasing herself with the curtains open. That is, until a mysterious man calls to tell her that he is watching. Her fantasy becomes reality as she begins to perform for this stranger, following his instructions over the phone while he watches from afar. Rebecca's world is turned upside down when finally they meet and she enters into a D/s relationship with her Midnight Caller.

Please excuse me for a moment, because I need another TALL drink of ice water before I launch into this review.

*Gulps down*

Where the world of the supernatural and the interesting lifestyle of BDSM collide is where Midnight Caller begins. The supernatural elements of the book are well thought, and there aren't lingering questions that I sometimes find myself experiencing, about why something is a certain way, or what exactly is going on with a different "species". Within the first few chapters, Midnight Caller provides all of these explanations, which is a great relief.
My only prior knowledge of the lifestyle that is BDSM comes from two other series of novels from other authors, and notes I've been given for editing, so I don't know a ton about it. This does not deter from the enjoyment of this novel. I found myself on many occasions stopping for a few moments so that I could go and get that glass of ice water. The entire novel was upbeat, and left you on the edge of your seat.
As always, I don't want to give too much away, but to say Midnight Caller is "hot" would be an extreme understatement. If it were possible, this thing would burst into flames when you touch it. I am honored to have the opportunity to read and review it. If you haven't purchased your copy yet, I suggest you do so, and SOON.
