Red Is The New White
Premium. Tomato. Whitening. Essence. Because if I wanted whiter skin, tomatoes are the first thing I’d think of.

Cross Stitch Yourself A Phone Case!
“Home Sweet Home” samplers – sooo 17th century. Today’s Crafty Craftpern whips up a smartphone case instead. Today at Shibuya Loft I saw needle & thimble-ready cases in eight different colors, ready for you to beaver up your favorite design, from Hello Kitty to Cuddly Raw Fish Boy.
Or you can cheat, and buy yourself one that’s already crocheted!

Suddenly…A Whale
So, yesterday I’m walking around, and suddenly I encounter a Sidewalk Whale. My carefully considered theory about this little-known hazard of Ningyo-cho is that it tends to happen on Fridays, when they surface to stock up on cetacean-sized libations at the partytime vending machine.

Cinnamon Roll Blasphemy
In the next round of trade talks with Japan, go ahead and give away the store when it comes to cars, beef and rice, but we need to make one thing perfectly clear: Things That Look Like Cinnamon Rolls Should Not Be Filled With Red Beans And Topped With Green Tea Frosting.

Placentas. For Your Face.
We are assured on the package that this super-economy-size bag o’ face masks is chock full of placentas. Face rescuing placentas. Premium placentas.
Okay, sorry, I really can’t hold it in anymore. EEWWWW!
I didn’t think it was possible to beat snail slime, cobra venom and bee larvae as the I’d-prefer-the-red-hot-pincers facial treatments of choice, but this one is definitely a contender.

Fish Flag Day!

Gigantic fish flags take to the sky at Nishiarai Daishi temple
On a fine spring day, how can you not be cheered by spotting koi nobori swimming through the sky? It’s Children’s Day again, here in Japan, and fathers & sons everywhere are celebrating by having iris fights in the bath.

Carp flags school over the shopping street in Kameido

Fancy golden ones in a Kawagoe shop window.
Here are last year’s beauties at Tokyo Tower and hanging from a kite string at Yoyogi Park: Swimming In The Sky

Hello Kitty Weinerfaces
Just because weiners aren’t round and cuddly doesn’t mean they can’t have Hello Kitty Faces too.

Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall…
…who’s da shiniest car of all? As my intrepid spokemodel Adam is demonstrating, this Toyota is whatever color you want it to be, depending on where you park it! You’d just have to decide whether the entertainment value in having a car that reflects your date back as a wiggly funhouse dwarf is worth having to drive in white gloves so you don’t have to keep buffing out the fingerprints.
If you’d like to see the mirror car the next time you’re in Tokyo, it’s at the Toyota MegaWeb showroom out in Odaiba. Directions are on my website, The Tokyo Guide I Wish I’d Had.

Flower Dream Expo 2014
You know how everybody thinks Japanese people sit around in their kimonos all day, arranging flowers into works of art? Well, they don’t. But when they do…it’s amazing.

I admit – this one is my favorite.
