Finishing touches on a Saturday! The deadline for my new adult mystery (this one set back in Park Slope) is January 15th and I SERIOUSLY can’t wait for this one to be out in the world. To celebrate, I offer my writerly PSA for anyone deep in the weeds on a novel this New Year: writing and revision cannot be done simultaneously. DO NOT edit yourself AS you are writing a first draft. You will hate your book and yourself and YOU WILL NEVER FINISH. It is all ALWAYS crap for a really long time. That is the nature of the process. But that doesn’t mean it won’t one day be f**ing awesome. The quality of a book simply cannot be assessed while you are still in the process of making it. (Notably, this applies to most things in life). Only when you have done everything you can to make it as good as it can be (a process that may take months AFTER you have a complete draft) will you be able to stand back and admire as the entire flock of birds takes flight. So in the meantime, take a deep breath, put your butt in the chair and get to work.
