Every 726th Day a writer emerges from her hooded-sweatshirt cave to do something fun. Or at least it was fun thanks to the brilliant @beowulfsheehan who took pictures for me yesterday. Beowulf was the man behind my last author photo and I was grateful that he and his amazing team were willing to do it again for A GOOD MARRIAGE. I highly recommend checking out Beowulf’s amazing portraits of some legendary authors—he even has a book called: AUTHOR. I am awed by his ability to capture the true spirit of someone’s writing merely with the look in their eyes. So lucky to have had the chance to work with him.

Now, where did I leave that hooded sweatshirt.

Big Little Lies meets Presumed Innocent in this riveting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia, in which a woman’s brutal murder reveals the perilous compromises some couples make—and the secrets they keep—in order to stay together.

Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but they’d be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she’d been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband Sam—she had everything she’d ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart.

No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? Long ago the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes.

The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help—even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect.

As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed—and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Grace Hall private school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, she’s left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved, but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.

A GOOD MARRIAGE coming May 5, 2020! An adult thriller with a legal twist, it’s set in Park Slope like Reconstructing Amelia. Except this time, it’s the parents who’ve run into trouble. Lots more details to come (including a cover; giveaways etc) but for now A GOOD MARRIAGE is available for pre-order and to shelve on Goodreads. (Links in bio). Can’t wait for you all to read it! Without doubt it’s my favorite book yet—shhh, don’t tell the others.

So many thanks to my brilliant editor @barth.jennifer and my genius agent @authorrep. Everything I love most about this book is thanks to the two of you. Get ready @harperbooks, I’m coming home!

Twelve miles. Before. And after. (newsflash—it’s hot in NYC in August). Longest training run I’ve done yet for the New York City Marathon this fall—which will be my third.

But know this: I never ran ANYWHERE until I was in law school. Mostly, I drank and smoked three packs a day—Marlboro reds (yes, three—trust me it can be done).

These days, I no longer drink or smoke. Instead, I run. And I write. Those things—and the family I’ve made—saved my life.

As I ran today, I was reminded again how the lessons I learned from long-distance running are directly applicable to novel writing. (Also, by the way to quitting drinking).

1. Ignore people who do things differently than you. Same with writing–outline, don’t outline, listen to music, require utter silence. Wear a stupid hat. Do whatever you need to do to get the job done. It does not matter what anyone else does or what they think.

2. Don’t worry about mile 13 when you are at mile one. It’s just not helpful. Listen to the ever-so-wise Anne Lamott: Bird-By-Bird folks. It’s the only way to go.

3. The beginning will SUCK.

4. The middle will SUCK WORSE. This has no bearing on how the end will turn out.

5. Ignore people for whom it seems to come easier. Celebrate their victory. Or, if you are unable to do so, blame their longer legs, their better shoes, their years of tutelage. Baring that, convince yourself that—deep down—they are crying inside.

6. If a stranger offers you a high five en route TAKE IT. Even if its it is not meant for you and they try to dodge you. You NEED all the encouragement you can get. Even that which must be taken by force.

7. Do NOT stop halfway. Do NOT stop when you are almost there. You can slow down if you need to, catch your breath. I know, I know, just a little rest is all you need that little voice in your head is saying. Trust me, that is not your voice Trust me, that is not your voice you’re hearing, it’s the devil’s. And you have one option: RUN LIKE HELL.

Scene of our first date (and first kiss) 21.5 years ago. Tonight the kids are both off at sleepaway camp and he’s agreed to go see @crawlmovieofficial with me. (And I am SO EXCITED). now, he doesn’t like scary movies or sea creatures. If that’s not true love I don’t know what is. #authorsofinstagram #marriage (p.s. the characters in my book do MUCH sexier things while their kids are away—well, there’s always next week.)
